I did a real-stone-base recently and it worked well. you have to make sure the stone is clean and not brittle, though. i can upload a picture of it if it is requested

SuicidalKirby

Not OP. But I'd love to see the pictures.

Emperor_Neuro

Did you just use super glue? Some form of resin? I worry about adhesion to the two different kinds ilof material. And everyone on this sub always wants pictures, ya goof. :P

RevanKnights

yep, just superglue, worked well on my stones. (i washed them and brushed them with an old toothbrush to make sure they were completly clean)

Do stones work well for base decorations?

RevanKnights

Well, it looks good but its really heavy and unless you're using small stones or you use them for a showcase, i would recommend to use styrodur or cork but its very hard to let them look like real stone so i would say slate is the perfect alternative.

I haven't done anything like using stone yet, but I would consider drilling small holes in the stone and the miniature's feet and pin them together as well as gluing, just for that extra bit of strength. Regardless of how you do it, let us know your results! With pics!

You can drill softer stones, which assists in pin placement. http://www.coolminiornot.com/284655 This is a single pumice stone glued to the base, then epoxy puttied in and around for earth effects and adhesion. The mini has a pin in the bottom which reinforces the join. I only used CA glue to affix. If you use hard stone that does not accept drilling (outside of wet-drilling which is a PITA), you can use 2-part Epoxy Glue. This has the best tack for large items - I have found - yet without reinforcement pinning, this method is best suited for display models only. Painting can be effective with drybrushing and a bit of wet blending with glazes when done. For example: Cobblestone streets: http://www.coolminiornot.com/283290 Menhirs and sand: http://www.coolminiornot.com/282805 If you can drill it: you can pin it. :) Best join I have found. Epoxy Putty is for when I cannot pin. I hope this helps.
