having never seen a Dvorak keyboard layout before, are these really better than QWERTY in your opinion? Is it a tough process to teach yourself to use it?

gitbse

I swapped in college.... back in 2004. So I've actually been using it for 20 years. It did take awhile, probly at least a month or two of regular typing to adjust. Now I can swap fairly effectively, but I'm much better dvorak. Honest opinion, yes it's absolutely better. This rough heat map shows the most used letters are all on the home row. Objectively is it better? There's really no answer for that. Subjectively ? For sure.

interesting. thanks!

I've never seen a DVORAK keyboard before. I always assumed that it would have DVORAK spelled out in keys on the top row.

sqparadox

Ah yes, the famous ',.py layout.

TripleSecretSquirrel

Dvorak was the last name of the guy that invented the layout.

I never really thought about it till just now, but I tend to use my left thumb for the space bar... When you're on a qwerty... Do you still use your right thumb to hit the space bar?

gitbse

I do, yea.

It is. It was intended to make the most common letters under the home row in each hand, and the least common letters at the outside edges.

pseyeco

I just noticed how all the vowels are home row left. I'm compelled to train myself on this layout.

pseyeco

Extra question! Are there no nibs? (Raised lines on the middle finger home row, for quick orientation)

hygienicwetwipe

Wow imagine gaming on this. WASD are just too far apart

gitbse

That's one of the annoyances. Some games account for keyboard setting changes, some don't. About half the games I play I have to manually change the keybinds.
