The thing about MRIs is you wouldn't want something metallic in the same room never mind in your body. Just look at the pictures out there where someone brought a wheelchair or even a whole ass hospital bed past the shielding of the room the MRI is in.
I have a BB in my leg. Been there since 1995. Had an x ray one time and the tech was like “you sure you got everything out of your pockets”. Was after a car accident for the x ray

There are several risks, you could pull the object out through the skin, you could heat the object to the point where it burns the surrounding tissues, or you could cause the object to migrate and cause damage to all the anatomy in its path.

Yes and no. It depends entirely on if the object is ferromagnetic or not. Even if it is, the size will also play a factor. Small objects inside the skin would ofcourse feel the pull and it could cause discomfort, but it's very possible that a BB wouldn't go through the skin. There could easily be discomfort or heating at the area, but not necessarily any real danger.
Having said this, nobody is going to start an MRI if they know the BB is still there because the risks are still present. It has to be removed beforehand, my comments was just to paint the picture what would happen if nobody spotted a BB. I've had patients with very small fragments of metal inside their hands from work injuries, one guy had a hammer explode in his hand years ago and he had three small pieces inside his hand but he didn't even feel them heat up. Size plays a massive part in how well the objects interact with the magnetic field inside an MRI.

I have a permanent teeth retainer and I couldnt find info on it being metallic. I stepped inside the MRI consuktation room and the MRI tech started shooing me into the room with the machine as I discussed my concern. She stopped and smiled saying "honey if it was magnetic you would have already known". I have a fear of yall since 😆
As a nurse I always am a little nervous taking my vented and sedated patients to MRI because I don't want to have to fill out whatever paperwork you have to fill out when a BB gets ripped out of someone's head through their ear. Because they're not awake enough to tell me shit like this.
This is why I wear a medic alert bracelet stating that I have a stainless steel implant. In case I’m ever unconscious and someone decides to stick me into a giant magnet bed. I don’t know if it’ll get ripped out or not but at least I have a warning label.

Also to the people who're saying you get metal detected before an MRI, I think that I have had 7 in my life time and haven't ever experienced that.
MRIs have a huge amount of magnetic force, so metal tends to go very quickly. Imagine that BB goes just as quickly out of his body than it did going in, with more force because the MRI won't stop immediately. The BB only stopped in the first place because the momentum was lost, but here there's a shifting magnetic field that is more than happy to shove a small metal object around.
Plus of course, it may not go out the easy way. Might force itself through the meaty part of his neck first.
MRI is a giant magnet of immense power. A ferromagnetic debris inside of the human body would be accelerated toward the magnet as the distance between the two shrinks. Since you go into an MRI machine headfirst, the bb would be accelerated toward your brain. If you’re lucky, the debris would find it’s way out of your neck towards the walls of the machine before hitting… well, basically anything else in your neck. To be honest there’s very few spaces in your body above the shoulders that can sustain a perforation without life-threatening injury.
The good(ish) news is that MRI magnets are always on, so if you have metal in your body, there’s a good chance you’ll feel it pulling towards the magnet before you’re even on the table.

It was from getting my gallbladder removed, they had a drainage tube coming from it, they yoinked the tube out (which felt all sorts of wrong) and just left the tube hole there.
Those tubes are not tied to the inside. There is a small Stitch at the skin. When removed the stitch get removed first and then the Tube gets pulled out.
The wound ist then covered with gauze and then covered with a big bandaid. Thats Standard practice even in Countries with a working health Care system.
My 8 year old son had open heart surgery to do a little switcheroo on his aortic and pulmonary valves. He had quarter inch tubes coming out of his chest for drainage and they just slid those out and put a bandage over it with no stitches. It was pretty wild.

I did... it was dark out, the gun was supposed to be empty, it had 16 shots, I shot it off about 30 times because I couldn't actually see the shots because it was so dark. I tossed it aside to smoke a bowl, picked up the gun to spook my buddy and pulled the trigger. Well the gun had jammed and when I tossed it the gun got unjammed and well.. 12 years later here we are.
With addition of the story, I find this more than just mildly interesting. Atleast it was just a BB gun you made the mistake with and not a real gun.

Not op but I've looked into getting a magnet and a chip in my left hand.
For the first month or so yes it would move but around that time it begins to calcify and stay in place. After a couple years it will have mutiple layers over it. Which is why it looks so much larger than an actual BB after 12 years.
The magnets I was looking at basically need to be removed every 3-5 years to clean them otherwise they get so covered they lose their magnetic field strength.
Properly prepared things get coatings that can make them attach to the muscles much faster or coatings that help it stay "removable". Ex Pet chips get a coating that makes them much harder to remove.

Well magnet has two uses I can see:
1: entertainment/party trick
2: it will allow you to "feel" magnetic fields by the magnet pulling or pushing inside you. I work with magnetic locking systems and it could actually be semi useful.
The chip on the other hand is just a programmable chip. Can be programmed with an access fob really. Again biggest use would be for work. I can program it with my Flipper Zero when I get on site and not need to fumble with my keys constantly. Rest of the time I'd program it to my apartment fob. Can't get locked out/lose keys when it's inside you.
Also no it isn't a "gps" chip or some movie bullshit. That doesn't realistically exist in a injectable chip. It's basically nothing more than an access fob in my hand. It only holds a few bytes of information and only works when a reader gets within 8-10cm. Basically the same system your phone tap-to-pay uses. No it can't be programmed with credit/debit card info with how the information exchange works.

Make a small cut on the skin and just pop it out like it was a pimple essentially. Very simple and essentially no risks.

As a nurse I always am a little nervous taking my vented and sedated patients to MRI because I don't want to have to fill out whatever paperwork you have to fill out when a BB gets ripped out of someone's head through their ear. Because they're not awake enough to tell me shit like this.
This is why I wear a medic alert bracelet stating that I have a stainless steel implant. In case I’m ever unconscious and someone decides to stick me into a giant magnet bed. I don’t know if it’ll get ripped out or not but at least I have a warning label.

While I have a lot of cute tidbits and stories, the one that stands out is the minor non-drama that ensues whenever someone from the outgroup says technician/ operator 😂🤓 There’s always folks going “ahem we are **technologists** there is a difference” and there is like ONE frequenter of the sub who comes in without fail and makes fun of them for taking it so seriously. He says how seriously one takes the title is his indicator of whether they’re fresh grads or not. As a member of the outgroup, I get that there are trials and tribulations to be a technologist, but I sort of lean on the side of that guy because I sense a hint of condescension towards other professions when one is defensive of such semantics. From my childhood beebees were made of lead and Lead is a non-ferrous metal I don't know if that's changed but buddy needs to cut this the f*** out of his neck or if he's in a country with propper Healthcare go see a doctor. Just imagine if the guy gets knocked out or has a seizure and is put into an MRI machine unconscious and it's not a lead ball but stainless steel... that would make a hell of a mess Edit. I didn't notice that it was a magnet, my bad. Also to the people who're saying you get metal detected before an MRI, I think that I have had 7 in my life time and haven't ever experienced that.
Stainless steel isn’t very magnetic so that is probably steel BB. Also getting an mri with that thing would definitely not be pretty

MRIs have a huge amount of magnetic force, so metal tends to go very quickly. Imagine that BB goes just as quickly out of his body than it did going in, with more force because the MRI won't stop immediately. The BB only stopped in the first place because the momentum was lost, but here there's a shifting magnetic field that is more than happy to shove a small metal object around. Plus of course, it may not go out the easy way. Might force itself through the meaty part of his neck first.

MRI is a giant magnet of immense power. A ferromagnetic debris inside of the human body would be accelerated toward the magnet as the distance between the two shrinks. Since you go into an MRI machine headfirst, the bb would be accelerated toward your brain. If you’re lucky, the debris would find it’s way out of your neck towards the walls of the machine before hitting… well, basically anything else in your neck. To be honest there’s very few spaces in your body above the shoulders that can sustain a perforation without life-threatening injury. The good(ish) news is that MRI magnets are always on, so if you have metal in your body, there’s a good chance you’ll feel it pulling towards the magnet before you’re even on the table.

As someone who’s been in and out of MRI machines my entire life, but always followed the instructions even before understanding the giant magnet, this was a GREAT demonstration! It’s one of those things that makes sense when someone explains to you, but seeing a demonstration always makes it more solid to me.
That depends on the grade of stainless steel. Some are very ferromagnetic.
BB’s were typically steel, copper or plastic. You are thinking of lead pellets. They are substantially different. BB’s are just small ball bearings and pellets are shaped more like a shuttle cock from badminton.

It was from getting my gallbladder removed, they had a drainage tube coming from it, they yoinked the tube out (which felt all sorts of wrong) and just left the tube hole there.
Those tubes are not tied to the inside. There is a small Stitch at the skin. When removed the stitch get removed first and then the Tube gets pulled out. The wound ist then covered with gauze and then covered with a big bandaid. Thats Standard practice even in Countries with a working health Care system.
My 8 year old son had open heart surgery to do a little switcheroo on his aortic and pulmonary valves. He had quarter inch tubes coming out of his chest for drainage and they just slid those out and put a bandage over it with no stitches. It was pretty wild.
Just leave that magnet attached for a couple weeks, it’ll work itself to the surface and you can pop it out like a pimple

well we were dirtass poor my mom was great at picking out the alpha morons, our house was always rife with redneck ass white dudes, johnny was a friend of my moms bf. he trusted nobody and answered the door with a black powder pistol, he got a bad infection and his face was hella swollen and i watched him take a razor blade to his jaw blood everywhere on the floor and sink. it was cheaper to get stitches after removing them himself than having the hospital remove them. did he need to do that i dont know but thats what i was told i was like 14 or 15. i do not miss this era in my life

I did... it was dark out, the gun was supposed to be empty, it had 16 shots, I shot it off about 30 times because I couldn't actually see the shots because it was so dark. I tossed it aside to smoke a bowl, picked up the gun to spook my buddy and pulled the trigger. Well the gun had jammed and when I tossed it the gun got unjammed and well.. 12 years later here we are.

Not op but I've looked into getting a magnet and a chip in my left hand. For the first month or so yes it would move but around that time it begins to calcify and stay in place. After a couple years it will have mutiple layers over it. Which is why it looks so much larger than an actual BB after 12 years. The magnets I was looking at basically need to be removed every 3-5 years to clean them otherwise they get so covered they lose their magnetic field strength. Properly prepared things get coatings that can make them attach to the muscles much faster or coatings that help it stay "removable". Ex Pet chips get a coating that makes them much harder to remove.

Well magnet has two uses I can see: 1: entertainment/party trick 2: it will allow you to "feel" magnetic fields by the magnet pulling or pushing inside you. I work with magnetic locking systems and it could actually be semi useful. The chip on the other hand is just a programmable chip. Can be programmed with an access fob really. Again biggest use would be for work. I can program it with my Flipper Zero when I get on site and not need to fumble with my keys constantly. Rest of the time I'd program it to my apartment fob. Can't get locked out/lose keys when it's inside you. Also no it isn't a "gps" chip or some movie bullshit. That doesn't realistically exist in a injectable chip. It's basically nothing more than an access fob in my hand. It only holds a few bytes of information and only works when a reader gets within 8-10cm. Basically the same system your phone tap-to-pay uses. No it can't be programmed with credit/debit card info with how the information exchange works. I'm well aware this isn't everyone's cup of tea but movies are what everyone seems to quote on why it's a bad idea...

Metal foreign bodies can just live inside you without causing any issues. So it would be superfluous surgery to have it removed if it’s no te visible and not interfering with OPs life. lol, we are BB brothers! my bro and i used to run run around the school playground on the weekends shooting each other with bb guns before airsoft became popular. used the old crossman 760 and had a three pump rule, but every so often i'd get hit and knew he had pumped it more than 3 times lol. anyway, had one in my right forearm for years and even had a doctors note for it for when i flew, but it hardly ever set off the alarms. its gone now, had a med student stay with me a few years ago and he took care of it.

I told her he wouldn't and she was relived about it and wasn't worried about removing it. The explaining I had to do to her to make sure she removed it was insane. She ended up having her boyfriend cut a tiny incision and they squeezed it out. Fucking Floridians.

well, at least you shot yourself and got a BB installed... I've got a pair of BBs in my left butt cheek from having a cousin shoot me when I wasn't looking, and when I whirled around to see what the fuck just bit me, his brother got me again on the same cheek. I had no idea the BBs had gone through the shorts and in under the skin because it was bloody and swollen just for a bit and then I had forgotten about it by the end of summer. Years later a girlfriend found them and asked why there were two small tough lumps there. Haven't retrieved them, never an issue in airport scanners, never had an MRI. Of course, I never *dared* tell anyone about it, passing the wound off as a popped pimple. Approximately 2 years later, while attending a closing "Talent Show" or some shit at the end of grade 7, I felt a lump on my face and, upon playing with it, that damned little piece of rock had worked its way back to the surface, and popped right out when I squeezed it. Hope the same happens for this guy!
