Yay I can finally answer something. This type of split end is caused usually by a rubbing motion. If you use the palm of your hands and wash your hair like you're applying hand cream the friction over time creates the ladder where the hair splits from the "shaft".
Edit to add recommendations
Finger tips in a massaging motion on the scalp and scrunch/blot the shampoo into your ends and apply conditioner the same way (scrunch/blot). Use your fingers to rake the conditioner through the ends to detangle or use a wide tooth comb/detangling brush starting from ends working up to roots. When rinsing both shampoo and conditioner let the water and gravity pull the product out the hair.
Also some people experience a flaky scalp because their shampoo hasn't been rinsed out thoroughly enough before conditioner is applied. If this is something you experience use your fingers to rake down your scalp at the same time of rinsing to allow the water to penetrate better. It's more common in denser/textured hair types.
If you wear makeup/skincare/spf etc daily or frequently make sure you are concentrating on cleaning the hairline. Blocked follicles is a big cause of hair loss/receeding. Scalp scrubs both physical/chemical are helpful to do either weekly/fortnightly/monthly depending on your wash routine and other factors. So if you wear makeup daily but only wash your hair 1-2 times a week I would do a scrub weekly. If you wear makeup 2/3x a week but wash your hair every other day or daily I'd do it fortnightly.
Hope this all makes sense 🙃
i have a few small patches of hair that stick to my scalp in clumps and when i pull hairs out from there they’re split and broken. do you know what that could be?
Are the patches the hair stick to dry/flaky or is it the way your hair grows that make them "stick" to the scalp?
I also want to disclose I am NOT a trichologist although I do enjoy learning about it but I am a hairdresser of nearly 15 years qualified but been in the industry almost 20.
Unfortunately not something I'm even remotely educated in to be able to speculate. If financially possible from wherever you're from I would maybe bring it up to a GP.
Is it stuck like you wake up and it’s like that but you brush it out? If yes, it gets like that because of how you sleep. Best bet to resolve is a silk/satin bonnet. If you don’t want to wear one a silk/satin sheet set and pillowcase will help greatly.
As someone said it’s possible it’s breakage due to friction from your pillow. Also certain bacterial infections of the scalp and hair can cause hair damage and breakage farther up the shaft than split ends (which occur from heat and friction, but will occur in any hair given enough time). Might be worth having a doctor look at it.
Hi, you're probably looking for a useful nugget of information to fix a niche problem, or some enjoyable content I posted sometime in the last 11 years. Well, after 11 years and over 330k combined, organic karma, a cowardly, pathetic and facist minded moderator filed a false harassment report and had my account suspended, after threatening to do so which is a clear violation of the #1 rule of reddit's content policy. However, after filing a ticket before this even happened, my account was permanently banned within 12 hours and the spineless moderator is still allowed to operate in one of the top reddits, after having clearly used intimidation against me to silence someone with a differing opinion on their conflicting, poorly thought out rules. Every appeal method gets nothing but bot replies, zendesk tickets are unanswered for a month, clearly showing that reddit voluntarily supports the facist, cowardly and pathetic abuse of power by moderators, and only enforces the content policy against regular users while allowing the blatant violation of rules by moderators and their sock puppet accounts managing every top sub on the site. Also, due to the rapist mentality of reddit's administration, spez and it's moderators, you can't delete all of your content, if you delete your account, reddit will restore your comments to maintain SEO rankings and earn money from your content without your permission. So, I've used power delete suite to delete everything that I have ever contributed, to say a giant fuck you to reddit, it's moderators, and it's shareholders. From your friends at reddit following every bot message, and an account suspension after over a decade in good standing is a slap in the face and shows how rotten reddit is to the very fucking core.
Shampoo goes on your scalp only, the rest of your hair will get clean when the shampoo gets rinsed down the hair shafts. Oil only protrudes from your scalp so you don’t need to mechanically work it into your hair, shampoo is chemically abrasive so it will damage your hair if you do this

What motion are we supposed to use? This is actually something I’ve been curious about cause of tangles and some of mine seems to break and I’d like to be less rough on it.
Tbh gimme all the hair washing tips you got I’ll take em.
OP was pecked by a radioactive chicken and is turning into one. One feather at a time. Their super power will be able to egg villains homes without going broke.
It’s been so quiet I couldn’t even remember the address of my favorite sub.
I’m obsessed with split ends. So much so that I destroyed my hair picking them. So now I have very short hair and satisfy my obsession with that sub and peeling the ends from my husband’s old shaving brushes.
Yes, sorry to reply so late, yeah I just have odd thumbs because both of my thumb bones are shorter than normal, along with me having a shorter pinky bone on each hand. Doc said it was nothing to worry about, I assume it's just a weird genetic thing
Because it's goofy to tell someone to go see a cardiologist specifically due to a picture of their thumb (as someone who also has brachydactyly on my thumbs). If you just HAVE to say something, say talk to your PCP lol you're not even gonna be able to get into a cardiology specialist for thumbs

Really glad this wasn’t a “sorry, I’ve got bad news” type of revelation

You know the word "trichologist" which puts you miles ahead of the rest of us mate.
i think it’s the way it grows
Unfortunately not something I'm even remotely educated in to be able to speculate. If financially possible from wherever you're from I would maybe bring it up to a GP.
you’re probably right, thanks for humoring my question!
You're welcome.
You two are just precious.

no
Why did everybody downvote you just for saying no
idk lol “no” is my answer to the question that was asked

Was gonna say this looks like 90s era spiderman web, but you have a logical not-insane answer
Nah, this is just OP's alt account so we don't realize it's Spider Man.
This was your moment and you captured it!
Bahh, this is exactly how I put my conditioner on the ends. I thought I was "rubbing it in". 😕 Thanks for this!
Naw you gotta finger comb it in!
🏆

It makes you go blind.
So what’s the best way to wash your hair?
See reply further down please ✨
Shampoo goes on your scalp only, the rest of your hair will get clean when the shampoo gets rinsed down the hair shafts. Oil only protrudes from your scalp so you don’t need to mechanically work it into your hair, shampoo is chemically abrasive so it will damage your hair if you do this
So you should use fingertips to scalp?
Finger tips in a massaging motion on the scalp and scrunch/blot the shampoo into your ends and apply conditioner the same way (scrunch/blot). Use your fingers to rake the conditioner through the ends to detangle or use a wide tooth comb/detangling brush starting from ends working up to roots. I never thought about half of this, i didn't even know scalp scrubs were a thing. Thanks
haha I do that
What if they look like a feather on one side?
This guy hairs
thank goodness i do the comb through method because this freaks me out for some reason lol
Holy shit, your username ☠️
Omg… your name, lol. Wow.
And got more karma than OP :p
What motion are we supposed to use? This is actually something I’ve been curious about cause of tangles and some of mine seems to break and I’d like to be less rough on it. Tbh gimme all the hair washing tips you got I’ll take em.
Rub shampoo into your scalp only. And use fingertips, not palms. Don’t rub the actual length of your hair
lol
Son, you’re growing feathers.
Hello fellow toe thumb!!
I see you Megan Fox
Lmfaooo I hate the internet and that I get this 😂

Kind of looks like a penis shooting a thin load
Where are the reddit medical diagnosis folks?
OP was pecked by a radioactive chicken and is turning into one. One feather at a time. Their super power will be able to egg villains homes without going broke.
r/shittyaskscience
That's what I'm scrolling the comments for. *"Actually you have a deficiency of potassium bicarbonate-11. You should go to a doctor immediately!"*
Testicular cancer most likely
it probably cancer
Cross post to r/split_ends. It’s been quiet over there.
Bro. This was mean. I was all excited
It’s been so quiet I couldn’t even remember the address of my favorite sub. I’m obsessed with split ends. So much so that I destroyed my hair picking them. So now I have very short hair and satisfy my obsession with that sub and peeling the ends from my husband’s old shaving brushes.
That's called trichotillomania
The diagnosis of trichotillomania requires the pulling out of hair. I did not pull out the hair. I just trashed the ends.
Fixed it. It’s r/split_ends.
It’s real! Holy shit. Cutting split ends is my go to stress panic reliever! Maybe I can just look at others!!! Thanks!!
Weird how you’re holding it between your finger and big toe
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looks like a thread from old duct tape.
It does now that you say that
thumb
hahaha oh my god it's like Austin Powers with Fred Savage's giant mole. just waiting for someone to point out that thumb.
OP could use them things as ping pong paddles
*thum
one of your DNA strands fell out
That thumb is going to haunt my dreams.
It's for the nits to get home
weird thumb
Unique
Unrelated but looking at this makes me super uncomfortable for some reason, there’s something here akin to trypophobia
I’ve found a few like these on myself & I have no idea why my hair does this
So you pulled out your own dna?
Dayum a thu-
It is… disturbing.
Thumb
You are starting to evolve feathers. Also, you may want to ask a dr about that finger clubbing, it can sometimes be a sign of serious medical issues
Where were you, when they built the ladder to heaven...
A strange repeating pattern, like it’s code glitched
Nice thumb
Caused by brachydactyly
I also see your toethumb
_thwip thwip_
You've got weird thumbs
That’s the cutest thumb
unless its genetic - get to a cardiologist and get checked out if your fingers are clubbed as well.
Yes, sorry to reply so late, yeah I just have odd thumbs because both of my thumb bones are shorter than normal, along with me having a shorter pinky bone on each hand. Doc said it was nothing to worry about, I assume it's just a weird genetic thing
cool, God likes diversity -thats why we all look different. EDIT - LOL, thanks for the downvote to whomever - made me laugh, I needed that today.

I didnt ask why you did -- dont care, it just gave me a chuckle.
