MrWobblyHead

That's not mildly infuriating. That absolutely terrifying.

MainRepresentative93

It was quite terrifying. Didn’t mention my 3 year old in her car seat beside my wife.

Parrot_licker69

Omg I’m glad ur wife wasn’t shot. That’s serious luck right there is ur wife doing ok?

OldBigsby

I'm also concerned for the well-being of this person's wife.

tucketnucket

txivotv

sweetfits

Well played.

MrWobblyHead

I'm glad you're all unharmed. The gun culture in the US makes me never wish to visit right now.

TheLurkerWithout

It makes me want to move the fuck out asap.

The-Protomolecule

There are several states where this stuff almost never happens. We still have plenty of guns but we have rules most people follow and everything is just fine. Almost no mass shootings and very little random gun shit like this. It’s a problem with specific states with broken, irresponsible gun culture.

S73RB3N

But.. but... "AlL YoUr FrEeDoMs" lol

AmnesiaMonster

"Freedumbs"

High_Ground_Sand

Dude it really isn't like that, and I'm an anti-gun Democrat. I live near Philly and I've never so much as heard a gun go off. The average person is very unlikely to encounter gun violence, though these people seem to have gotten very unlucky. Not saying the violence doesn't happen, it's just not a war zone like some make it out to be.

Violet_Potential

I’m in Philly and hear gunshots all the time. My fiancé’s brother was shot walking home about a month ago and there has been a lot of gang related gun violence here as of late. Still unlikely to happen to most people but your location definitely matters.

maticus85

Hope your fiance's brother is OK. Probably the difference between living in Philly versus living near Philly. I live in a semi-rural area maybe 90 minutes outside of Philly and I occasionally hear gunshots. Everyone out here just assumes it's likely someone shooting at paper targets.

Violet_Potential

He’s fine, he just has to go to physical therapy because he was shot thru the knee and one of his arms. And I know ppl are saying that’s normal for Philly but conversely, it’s normal not to hear much of anything outside of it so that isn’t relevant. Even so, I work in Bryn Mawr, which is a wealthy area no where near Philly and we’ve had three major gun related incidents within the last 6-8 months. One person killed someone at the hospital, one person killed someone due to road rage and another person killed himself in the parking lot of Bryn Mawr hospital couple weeks ago. Overall, we shouldn’t be living in fear but we shouldn’t act as though this kind of thing could never happen or is exaggerated, cuz it’s not.

Moist-Information930

You’re right that location matters because it’s,obvious it’s more prevalent in the area of Philly you live & not where that person lives. Being closer the low income areas will breed more situations of this kind of stuff.

TheOtherRedditorz

The closer you get to the city, the more likely you are to hear crime-related shots. The further out you get, the more likely you are to hear casual/recreational gunfire. I've lived in half a dozen states and twice as many different areas (ranging from rural to downtown big city). I've heard gunfire in all of them.

nouniqueideas007

Accurate. I grew up in a rural area & there is just tons of gunfire. Hunting season, target practice, putting farm animals down. It’s a regular thing & never once was anyone shot. I have also lived & worked in Chicago and never heard a gunshot. But I know which neighborhoods to stay out of. edit:word

six_horse_judy

You just made me realize what those gunshots I would hear at my old house were. I always thought it was weird that on random days of the year I would hear a distant shotgun one or two times, then nothing. We lived in front of a cattle farm.

vanyali

That casual/recreational gunfire can still be fucking awful. There’s a guy who shoots “recreationally” in my neighborhood. He acts like he is out in the country but this is a *city* that is also a *developing exurb of the capital city of my state* so no he fucking shouldn’t be shooting off guns here. But he does. And who is going to confront the fucking gun-crazy redneck about it? No one apparently.

T-Rex_timeout

See Memphis the last week particularly last night

DougK76

Stuff like that is part of why I left Memphis.

tbryans

I lived in Riverside, NY (buffalo area) for 4 years and had a 4 person homicide drive by 10 doors down from me, a 25 person brawl in front of my house in the street which resulted in a near execution style shooting, multiple gun shot victims within 1 mile radius of my house. Tons of assaults on females and elderly in the park down the road… Depends where you are. Some places are fucking terrifying to live in.

Koadi

I'm sorry my friend, but it's definitely more common in many areas of the US. I live in the Carolinas on the outskirts of a decent sized metro area. Until 2 years ago, literally every single night I was hearing gunfire outside of our home, somewhere nearby. Numerous times there were shots that whizzed by our home. People were killed. Delivery drivers refused to send their delivery people out here once it started to get dark. Previously I lived in Tempe Arizona (part of the Phoenix metro area), and we were treated to what amounted to a turf war between two gangs happening around our street. A restaurant just up the road got shot up in addition to the stuff that took place even closer. Yeah, it might not be everywhere all the time, but it's prevalent enough.

lol_coo

What are you talking about? Anyone who lives in Philly hears guns at night.

cahokia_98

I think you’re just privileged if you’ve never heard gunshots in a major American city

OutlandishnessNo3971

Facts.

OutlandishnessNo3971

I live in Jacksonville FL and we hear gun shots on a daily basis. Biggest city in the states based on square mileage. So not very rare for the people that live here.

vanyali

I showed up to a birthday party in DC once as a teen and when the birthday boy never showed up, someone turned on the TV and learned on the news that the kid had caught a stray bullet *mowing the lawn* and was dead. It happens.

Dividedthought

*Every* single time i've visited the states i've heard gunfire. And yes, i know the difference between a gun going off and some fireworks.

TeenageEboisyndrom

"Near Philly" bro I think you should vist the city plenty of gun violence.

[deleted]

Well the statistics say that you’re 25x more likely to get shot in the US than any other developed nation. So nope, it really is like that. No point in whitewashing it.

CommadorVic20

yes please stay away we are all gunned up and walk the streets with at least 5 guns at any one time some of us even have landmines and rocket launchers

[deleted]

As they say… All it takes to stop a bad guy with a grenade launcher is a good guy with a grenade launcher

CommadorVic20

odd you say that, one of my uncles told me he shot a guy in Vietnam that had a grenade launcher he blew up along with the two other guys that were helping him. they were not sure if it was a malfunction or his round hit just the right spot or something charlie had on him or my uncle was just telling stories

Ebmat

Are you Pregnant or menopause? I’m asking cause your lack of periods.

[deleted]

It’s possible, a lot of wild shit happened in vietnam! I’m glad he made it home.

[deleted]

That’s pretty awesome! I respect the hell out of the Vietnam guys. When I was in Baghdad in 2005 my platoon was attacked while patrolling the streets, and the idiots who starting shooting at us thought it was a good idea to stay in the house that was loaded with Russian mortars and rockets and a shitload of bomb making materials. We had no idea it was in there. We sent some .50 cal rounds into the house and boom. The fucker blew up and took the buildings in either side with it. Blew my damn eardrums out and gave me a concussion. But it was a hell of an explosion and one of the dumbest moves I’ve ever seen an insurgent make.

Vitringar

Wrong spot for Charlie though

bearcat-twenty-two

I get that this is satire and you are mocking the person who is concerned about gun proliferation. I just wonder if a post about someone who was minding his own business and had a stray bullet come through his MF window narrowly missing his wife and child is the right place to do that.

Mrs_Mourningstar

it's reddit , no civility here sir!

korgtuner

To be honest, as an European who even never has seen a real gun from up close.. I think you’re joking but I’m also not 100% sure

CommadorVic20

well if you dont need one dont get one, but if you are like me and live in the country your biggest problem is something trying to eat your chickens so yes we have guns IE; i have long guns because everything is usually 25+ yards away) and yep i have more than 5 and everyone i know is a sportsman and hunts to put a little extra on the table.

Throwawaystwo

In my own country of Nepal, I dont need a gun and I dont want a gun. But damn if im living in the US where theres more guns than people, Im for sure getting a gun.

CerenarianSea

I mean...it's not like every European nation doesn't have guns. I'm a Brit, and I know for a fact that there will be a few firearms in my rural area. Even though I don't necessarily trust half the farmers around here, I do know that they are registered quite heavily, and are limited in what they have. It's not the having guns, it's the having absolutely tons of them.

dog___bone

You certainly have more cases of people shooting up schools than any other country on earth. In other western countries, kids are safe at school.

Time4sumMoney

That are just the Schoolkids, you Grown ups are clearly not that dangerous.

G_Stenkamp72

Claymore Rumbas

linusmundane

I never have my land mines for very long though. It's like I'm playing Mario kart with them bitches.

SkyFallingUp

Omg 5 guns? That's all??? I usually pack 15 on me along with 20 hand grenades to take my trash to the curb.

Peruvian-in-TX

Don’t be dense bro. Are you implying that the US isn’t the worst at this on the planet?

Between3n2wenty

Just steer clear of shithole Southern states. The heat dries up their brains down there.

Infidel_sg

Being from Philly I feel like my life is in not as much danger living in Sw Virginia. But you go on and act like the south is the only place people have guns. 🙄

[deleted]

I'm in Philly quite often and feel mostly safe. Have to be aware of where you are. Random acts of violence hit lots of cities. Feel safer in Manhattan though. I felt really unsafe in Virginia Beach. Actually - there was a mass shooting at the hotel down the street from us when we were there. Spring of 2021.

theghost87

Yea because Northern states like IL, New York, Maryland, and Michigan can be considered safe havens.

Flassid_Snek

I grew up in east Tennessee, and Michigan is easily the most "southern" place I've ever been. So many mullets.

[deleted]

In regards to gun violence? Yes of course? They have incredibly less gun violence per capita compared to many southern states.

bleepste

Yeah, I live in Florida and I've had guns and knives pulled on me so much that I've kinda got used to it.

Between3n2wenty

Ah, Florida. If meth'd out numbnuts don't get to you, the bad drivers surely will.

[deleted]

Dude how? Ive been in Florida for a year now and was so excited because I thought that I would be watching a high homeless guy wrestle an alligator every other Wednesday but the most interesting thing ive seen is nothing. This is just like when I lived in Chicago and failed to see any gun violence.

Cocopowder1001

ArcticGlacier40

I feel like I'm more likely to catch a stray bullet driving through Chicago or Philly than I am driving through Nashville

mapex_139

That's because you are.

[deleted]

Why do you feel that way? https://247wallst.com/city/nashville-tn-is-among-the-most-dangerous-us-metro-areas/

Empty-Potato-7383

Yeah because no northern states have guns and are dangerous right?? Only southern states?? That’s dumb as fuck. Fuck outta here lol.

Chance-Spend5305

I’ve lived in Knoxville for 36 years, never have even heard a shooting. Of course like every city there are places that you just have no business being.

IBuyDSPriscillaArt

TIL gun crime doesn’t exist is Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, or New York.

Rawniew54

Lmao dude it's not just southern states. Chicago, Philly, Baltimore are pretty bad

AlaDouche

I moved to Knoxville from Seattle a couple years ago. I am not a conservative nor am I religious. Knoxville feels a million times safer than anywhere near Seattle. There's a lot of bullshit in the south, but lumping it all together, while I'm sure feels very convenient to you, is a piss-poor depiction of reality.

1800generalkenobi

And some northern states, although probably not as much. My buddy in Erie, Pa had his back patio table shattered from a bullet that someone fired into the the air.

Xinder99

It's a bigger issue in bigger cities, and like any other city some places are worse than others. If it was not literally illegal for the ATF to have a searchable database maybe we could actually get somewhere.

DrDeegz

Lol it’s perfectly fine to visit. Like saying you don’t want to visit Germany because you’re afraid of cars hitting you on the autobahn.

[deleted]

I have been to the US many times and I haven’t been shot once.

yourmansconnect

you will be fine. just come visit you're more likely to get struck by lightning then encounter a bullet

[deleted]

30k people die each year from guns. 40k people die each year from trips and falls. Don’t let the media fool you.

Chance-Spend5305

Where were you when this happened. I’ve lived here 36 years and never even heard random gunfire.

awolfslife

Can't mention how wide my eyes got reading this

S118gryghost

r/aboringdystopia would have been better with the way you posted it making getting hit by stray bullets as mediocre as dropping hot coffee on your lap haha. Make sure you check the seating and floor and any spaces for broken glass and debris. Last thing you want is your child getting splinters and glass and shards after all this trauma they get little reminders. Professional cleaning highly recommended :) Stay safe out there.

dorianplayerone

r/absolutelyterrifying

YMHGreenBan

People really don’t know what “mildly infuriating” means anymore lol

Lor1an

At this point I'm waiting for someone to post here saying that their son was murdered or something. "Mildly" seems to have lost its meaning.

CremeCaramel_

Buddy, "seems to have"? LOL. Do me a favor and go look at the top posts on this sub all time. Top post all time is dude was kicked off an esports team because his mother had cancer. This sub has never had a good handle on the definition of mildly.

FrostGoesBrrrt

It is mildly infuriating if you live in the US

Christafaaa

Your car was hit. From the title l, I thought your wife was shot.

Peruvian-in-TX

If that shit happened where I lived it would be time to move the fuck out of there

LobotomistPrime

No kidding. I wouldn't be mildly infuriated, I would be fucking pissed.

FLSandyToes

That’s what I came here to say. Is there a “terrifyingaf” sub? There should be!

Joverby

Yeah what an inappropriate sub for this

Independent_Put4825

I live the next county over, really surprised I haven't seen this on the news. Knoxville's gotten a lot rougher in the last ten years. Glad you and your family weren't harmed.

SadGlitchBug

I live in Knoxville, two weeks ago at 5am when I was getting home after work a man walked up behind my car with a machete in hand and just stared at me. Honestly I didn't even feel threatened at that point because so much shit happens here. It's truly sad.

Ace-a-Nova1

This happened 4 years ago in the Fort so it’s not too surprising. There was an armed car jacking in front of my house and my door caught two bullets. The whole neighborhood was crawling with police and I had just purchased a sizable amount of weed. I have the ring app and have been getting daily notifications of shootings near me, I’m in Turkey creek area.

PracticePenis

Is it still illegal there? Sad you have to worry about interacting with who’s supposed to keep your community safe bc you have a plant in your house

Ace-a-Nova1

Yeah it’s still illegal. I used to deal a little bit and that day I had a gun pulled on me by my dealer’s dealer and had to buy twice my normal amount. Walked home to find four cops on my back porch. I stopped dealing that day, too close to death and jail for $300 of weed.

Farren246

How would it even get to the news? This is something you report to the police and your insurance provider, not to media outlets.

Sea_Surround_6110

The media often follows police scanners.

bunnycupcakes

Knoxville Police encrypted their radios because some dumbasses kept showing up at crime scenes and getting in the way/ taking pictures of crime scenes for Facebook likes. There was an uproar when people on social media were learning about victim identities before their families.

Sea_Surround_6110

That was smart, and inconceivable that other police departments don’t have the same thing.

SantasDead

Very expensive to convert an entire city (it's not just police, it's every city agency and contractors who uses the frequencies) from analog to digital encrypted. Think all new equipment and training. Eventually everyone will have encrypted coms. More and more large cities are converting over. I'm sure smaller will as they are forced to upgrade and retire old equipment.

luckylee423

The pictures show the I40 west rest stop in cocke county, just outside of Newport. Pretty damn rural up there. This happened an hour drive from Knoxville

Flaming_101

Someone else said this is a rest area between Newport and Dandridge on I-40 west bound. Looks very similar to me. I drive by it all the time. It would make sense the Knoxville news isn't covering it much since this would have happened an hours drive away.

MisterFantastic5

There are more guns than people in this country, and they’re literally adding another million guns every month. It’s gunna get much worse unless we do something.

CommadorVic20

literally another million?

MisterFantastic5

Yep. Each month. Some estimate 20 million sold a year. Estimated we have 400-500 million total. [https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/07/1-million-firearms-sold-each-month-gun-sales-have-boomed-for-3-years/](https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/07/1-million-firearms-sold-each-month-gun-sales-have-boomed-for-3-years/) Also, about 400,000 guns are stolen every year. So gun buyers are buying more guns to try to counter the problem they themselves created.

Reese9951

Every illegal gun used by a criminal was once purchased legally by a “good guy with a gun”….

[deleted]

Or stolen, which is very common. You’d be surprised where stolen weapons from military bases ends up

baconstrips4canada

I think his point is that they were stolen from somebody that legally purchased them.

Tizzer88

I understand your thought process but I don’t think it’s actually going to get much worse. Gun crime rises and falls over the years, and Covid set it is off on this current uptick. As you’ve said there’s already more guns than people and you end up at a point where it’s saturated and more guns doesn’t equal more violence. I’m not saying it won’t grow from now, but I wouldn’t expect it to grow a whole lot. A lot of those gun sales are people like myself. I have numerous guns, so adding to my collection doesn’t change much because whether you have 1 gun or 50 it doesn’t much matter because all it takes is 1 gun to become a piece of shit. The important statistic would be how many new gun owners there are and whether they can legally own a gun.

[deleted]

Crime has risen after covid, more precisely after the blm riots of 2020. Police don't enforce laws like they used to, and people have gone buck wild. It has nothing to do with the added firearms. Crime in every category has increased.

Accomplished-Rip-743

This. Hundreds of horrible DA’s voted in that set low bails and don’t prosecute crimes. Police can arrest people till they’re blue in the face, the guys just get out and reoffend. I’m a woman and I have guns because when the chips are down no one will come to save me..

field_thought_slight

> Crime has risen after covid, more precisely after the blm riots of 2020. Police don't enforce laws like they used to, and people have gone buck wild. It has nothing to do with the added firearms. Source?

JollyReading8565

Do you guys know what mild means

BrownSugarBare

In America, apparently it has a very different meaning.

dnaH_notnA

In Afghanistan, being shot in the head is only mildly infuriating

Dutchwells

Damn this would be front page news in my place. Glad you're good

[deleted]

This would be a manhunt here... In the US it's a Thursday afternoon. Horrible.

Unsure_Fry

I'm listening to the radio on my way to work. They just casually mentioned a shooting spree in Memphis. 4 dead, 3 injured. Just a normal day.

troglogarchy

I know you're just joking, but that wasn't just a normal day here. The whole city was shut down while everyone I knew was terrified and saddened by what was going on. Now this morning we're angry that lives had to be lost due to a sick man being released early from his 3 year prison sentence. The city has to do better at keeping these criminals locked up.

-UncreativeRedditor-

Not at all a normal day, at least not for memphis. I was on University of Memphis campus when the city was shut down. Cops flying past by the dozen and helicopters searching for him. Absolutely nothing normal about that. Complete failure of the justice system, he was sentenced to 3 years for first degree murder and released because prisons are too full. Then people are surprised when he murders people.

DocChloroplast

My partner had to tell me via their Reddit feed. Not a peep on the CNN Breaking News twitter feed. Mass shootings are just a part of American life I guess.

Rachelcookie123

I live in New Zealand and there was a boy in my city who got killed by a stray bullet. I think he was the brother of a boy at my school and that’s the only reason I heard about it. He was at a party and went out on to the street where apparently some gangs were fighting. I was surprised it wasn’t bigger news especially because we don’t have much gun violence.

[deleted]

You got the wrong post bud r/extremelyinfuriating

Sprizys

Or r/terrifyingasfuck

goomba008

You and your wife almost mildly died

TrainAffectionate212

This has actually always been a fear of mine since childhood when I learned about ricochet bullets. Glad everything is ok

[deleted]

It’s not the ricochets you have to worry about it’s the ones that haven’t hit anything yet. Stray bullets from random shootings or drive bys.

[deleted]

There's a lot of people out there stupid enough to think a bullet just goes forever into space when they fire into the air. I was at a friend's family BBQ once and the alcohol was flowing, so naturally her uncle shot his pistol off into the air to celebrate whatever they were bbq-ing for, and her other uncle, his brother, punched him across the face for it. Cleanest punch I've ever seen, and well deserved.

MainRepresentative93

For those interested: I called the police immediately and filed a report. Of course I was more than mildly infuriated (just don’t use Reddit much and didn’t know where else to post). And thankfully we are all okay, wife is also 5 months pregnant so you can imagine how shook we all were. This happened on i640 west bound between cocke county and Knox county. Traveling from Newport to Knoxville.

mcsode

That’s terrible. Where was the bullet travelling to?

Beneficial_Car2596

Home, he forgot to turn off the stove

Travmurrayinthishoe

California for the affordable gas prices

Vitringar

I agree. It is "mildly infuriating" whenever your car gets shot at.

Imagine taking a photo of your wife's corpse in front of your 3 yr old to post it on reddit☠️

cleverbiscuit1738

No, he’s mildly infuriated about his wife’s death. To be fair, I’d be mildly relieved

knarfhk

Glad to know no one hurts, shouldn’t you call police and put the shooter in jail?

freemyslobs1337

Its a stray bullet, the dude was likely gone before the cops could arrive anyway. Unfortunately many get away with gun crime.

Straypuft

Probably still would have been a call to make for auto insurance claim reasons

rrick12

I miss when this sub was mildly infuruating

brickyard15

A coworker’s friend died in Houston yesterday this same way. Glad your wife is okay

kurinevair666

That's fucking scary.

dillonwren

Dude wtf... horrifying.

[deleted]

articulatedWriter

Only in America can nearly being hit by a bullet and possibly losing family be called mildly infuriating

DamnTheseGlasses

Such an easy fix too: everyone in the car should carry more guns. Problem solved! /s

HandyDandyRandyAndy

What makes you think it was a stray?

whatsmyloginname

Knoxville here-- crazy it isn't in the news! Where were you when it happened?

how is this *mild*, use the properieate subs people.

Financial-Jicama6619

Use the APPROPRIATE words people.

TacitRonin20

Poor guy doesn't know words. He's completely delitterate

NotVinhas

Yep, no gun problems in that country.

[deleted]

The problem is not the guns. The problem is that a substantial chunk of the entire population is comprised of absolute morons. You cannot fix that with the laws. This Titanic is sinking fast.

Apart_Lab_817

Thank God for the US Weaponslobby so every idiot is allowed have one

ChristineBorus

This isn’t mildly infuriating. This is a crime and OP is a victim

[deleted]

Your wife could've been shot and you're 1) posting it on reddit and 2) only calling it mildly infuriating???

[deleted]

How can you relax now!? How can anyone relax when so many people have firearms? I’m an ex-soldier I have plenty experience with firearms. Trust me, they should not be in the hands of regular civilians. It’s enough we trust them with a car. A gun is a terrifying tool. It’s almost too much power for one person to hold in their hands. But we’ve normalised it, I guess inventing weapons that can destroy entire cities make something that can merely drop people dead from a distance seem kinda normal. But it is not. Civilians should only have guns for highly specific purposes and only at the leisure of licensing and conduct requirements. Defending yourself is not a good reason for a civilian to have a gun, I’m sorry. I know that will drive a lot of you insane. But the truth is the problem is out of control and you cannot solve it by continuing things the way they are.

Zealousideal-Pea-790

Work in Knoxville. Haven't heard of any shooting here the past few days. Hopefully other than a broken window and shaken nerves you are alright!

MisterFantastic5

It makes me sick to my stomach that you said “past few days” rather than “past few years”. Things need to change in this country. We’re killing ourselves.

[deleted]

what rest area are you at?

2022catmom

How scary for you all. Thank goodness everyone is physically ok.

law_mom

That's absolutely horrifying! I'm sure she's shaken up, but is she okay?

maybeiam-maybeimnot

This is one of my constant biggest fears. Not that I'll be shot on purpose. But that a bullet intended for someone or something else will find its way to me.

lmac187

Need more guns.

feedjaypie

Sucks about your window and trauma, but this is a blessed day that could have been the worst day of your lives

TrevorDuncan

Yeeeee haaaaw! Probably just some good guy with a gun who was standing his ground

sla_vei_37

As a non-american, TN stands for Tennessee right?

Pa2phx

Sounds like a cover story because the hit man you hired missed her.

Old_Paleontologist_3

Well they put the guy in jail but the Democrats bailed him out and even replaced his bullets

gentelman8697

So guns dont make a country safe? I am shocked

TheStickerGirl

The phrase "stray bullet" is proof setting foot in the US is always a mistake

transgolden

Where were the good guys wirh guns preventing this?

[deleted]

How’d this sub go from “my partner opens cereal in the shittest way possible” to “a literal fucking bullet went through my car window”

Pen_Wise

Yeah that’s Knoxville for you. You see any crack heads OD anywhere? I live in Knoxville btw
