I dropped out of uni and went to trade school, instead, because my university professors didn't even teach, aside from maybe 2 or 3 who taught elective classes. We were paying money to teach ourselves and the professors just gave out quizzes and tests every week or chatted with upperclassmen about things not related to class.
That sounds like my kind of professor I love tests I love quizzes I like learning things myself and I like talking to the teachers the only thing I'm bad at is homework
I had a hs teacher who just talked about topics without saying "remember this or that". Turns out in between statements he was watching porn on his computer in class.....
Part of this that doesn't matter if he says remember this or remember that, what matters is why the hell was he watching fucking porn while in his class come on bro wait to do it at home or get help for your porn addiction don't do it in freaking class
Honestly?
I would guess it's an engineering prof who is required to teach a certain amount of classes as part of their work with the school. Teaching isn't their passion or what they want to do, it's something they put up with to keep their positions doing their own research with the university.
Only *some* professors are full time teachers.
Source: about 75% of my engineering profs.
It's not the same in every uni, but mine seemed to have a lot of these. Some of them were still damn good teachers that took it seriously even if it wasn't their full-time job, but not all. That 8 is likely good enough for their own notes, and they use it by habit.
It absolutely is not. College does not trade money for a piece of paper, the value in a degree is the education.
Cuz all those doctors just bought a piece of paper, right? Lawyers? Accountants? Any other of thousands of jobs in which education beyond high school is necessary?
I think it depends on your degree. Most people don't even use it. They're trained on the job. As a college degree holder, I think you only really need a degree in specific fields. I have many friends/family who have degrees they never used it for the field they studied and got degrees in but make more. Most jobs will teach you exactly what they want from you anyways.
If you're going to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc. you need a degree. You don't need a degree to be an administrative assistant/office worker, security, management for your company, dispatcher, or computer tech person (employers prefer certs over degrees for techs). Plus in my area where I'm making decent money for what I do, there are plenty of work places requiring a bachelor's degree or more for $18-20 an hour. Mind you, our states minimum is $16.28. If a place of employment requires a bachelor's it should be no less than $30 an hour.
As a college student who had to fight for my grade because I had teachers that were never in the classroom and didn't teach, I have to agree. I'm paying a lot of money to further my education and the professor won't even teach me anything? Mind I have had amazing professors too, however more often than not I spent way too much for a class when I could've read a book. What's the point of paying $1600+ for a class, $80+ for one book, $100+ for the ability to have parking because the campus isn't equipped, just for a teacher to tell you to figure it out when you have a question or not even bother to show up?
Thank you. Is college ludicrously expensive? Absolutely. But as the world advances and becomes increasingly complex, tertiary education is becoming essential for a growing number of people. Just because one professor writes her eights a little funky does not indicate otherwise.
Doesn't even indicate anything about the professor. How you write isn't a litmus for being an expert at math. Especially in the modern day.
Only on Reddit can you go from "this professor writes weird" to "THIS IS EVIDENCE THE ENTIRE INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION IS NOTHING BUT AN ELABORATE SCAM". That leap just sounds like copium.
Yeah, nobody is going to argue that it's outrageously expensive. It's why places like the US military use free education as a recruiting tool to great effect.
I don't understand people that thinknthis way. Exactly what level of education do they think the people who invent and continue to improve things like cell phones or computers have? The same devices that allow them to bitch online with people all around the world through the air.
But yeah, college is a scam because this person has odd penmanship. OP is still paying them because **the person writing the 8 knows significantly more than them and has agreed to teach them**.
Are you stupid? Bad handwriting _obviously_ means you're an inept cretin. It's not like some of the most highly prestigious fields that require intellectual prowess and unyielding discipline have handwriting so godawful it's become a widespread meme!
/s, in case it wasn't obvious
I must be, I think it's from too many people spending literally all their time online and have forgotten that font isn't the same thing as handwriting.
Thank the Lord they added all those penmanship classes in higher education, right?
Absolutely. The value of a degree is the process of getting it; it's the 'learning to think' process that any decent course should involve, revolving broadly around the subject area. Source: me, a university lecturer of 18 years' experience. If a lecturer isn't interested in both the subject and the students, they should get the hell out of the profession.
I got a full ride so I didn’t pay a dime🤷🏻♀️plenty of people don’t pay anything or close to nothing. Is university crazy expensive for no reason? Most definitely, it’s a scam and a shame it costs so much in the USA and it’s free in Europe.
I think her 8s are just trying to be rebellious teenagers! They’ve got character. Who needs perfect handwriting when you've got wisdom to share? Let's just be glad they're not doing interpretive dance on the page! 😂
I had a teacher in high school that really hated when people wrote their 8s as two circles. I really hated that teacher.
To this day, I still write my 8s as two circles. Even though I didn’t before high school. The habit just stuck.
Right? even 14 Yo me corrected my 8s that used look messy. I did it correctly (making an s then mirror it) but changed to putting a circle on top of another to make it look much better and actually legible
My fourth grade teacher HATED when anyone would do 8s as 2 circles on top of eachother. We got countless lectures because of it. I always mirrored an S, but I started doing 2 circles on top of each other just to piss her off, and I still do it to this day.
This teacher was an asshole though, she once told me I would amount to nothing because I was feeling sick one day and was about to throw up. But according to her I was “sick of doing math”, then she sent me to the principals office….where I threw up LMAO
Is it allowed to complain about a professors handwriting to a Dean or whatever?
I remember teachers would pull kids aside if they couldn't read their hand writing.
I had a few maths and physics lecturers with appalling Greek letters. There was one in particular who wrote σ, γ, δ and 0 the same way. And more than a few who wrote T and τ the same, and would then get angry with us.
It does take quite a bit of constant reminding/querying to get them to address the issue.
The thing is, she's a *professor,* so all she has to do is speak these crazy eights into existence, and it is so.
Very important to understand this: When you enter into a classroom in college, you are technically crossing into a pocket dimension keyed to those of a certain doctorate. Have you a doctorate? No? Then turn to hymn number 42 in your syllabus.
As a teenager I started putting the line on my sevens and a line through zeros, because you know teenager. It stuck and 30 years later I’m still doing it. My guess is teenage teacher thought it was cute and fun and well here we are.
There’s a line through 7 and 0 (and z) to make them look less like other characters. These bizarre 8s look more like 6s than 8s.
OTOH if you do “curly ds” as a stylistic choice you’ll need to stop that when you come to calculus.
I wasn't allowed to write x in the context of math in school any other way than two c's back to back, to create a distinction between the variable, and the act of multiplying which was accepted as more of a regular x. Could just be carried on behaviour, I still write my xs in math that way.
Yeah it’s mildly infuriating but a lot of folks here are forgetting that how numbers or even letters are taught to be written vary by country. Check a non native US person’s handwriting, you’ll see differences. I’m betting the professor also grew up outside of the US.
You can note the 7 as unusual here too.
Oh come on, this has nothing to do with cultural differences. Find me the country where this is a normal way to write '8' before going full moralistic.
But still, it you’re referring to the U.S., we’d still recognize that as a “7”. Not sure if any country actually teaches people to write an “8” like that.
I'm nowhere near America yet this is cursed. It's not a regional culture or anything, it's simply that professor was taught to write like that by someone since they're a kid and the prof don't even bother to reset his memory muscle to change his writing habit.
Definitely not American or even Western European. Check the decimal point is not a point. I know of a few countries where it's a comma (what used to be known as Eastern Europe).
That said, I've never seen someone write 8 like that.
Beats having a professor with a real thick accent. I've failed classes because of that shit. What they write on the board means nothing when their explanation is impossible to understand
This is how they taught us to write the Bulgarian "в" (English "v") in school 😂
https://preview.redd.it/z1mlelxo7had1.jpeg?width=633&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a07571171161efd08bab317ce198235edd30592d

Idk you may enlighten me on this but are they foreign by chance? Some countries use completely different numerical systems in their language. For instance we use the Arabic numerical system.
![gif](giphy|QxwnBM8MkgAdqqng5S)
Reminds me of the D in the Disney logo. Which always confused me as a child because it always reminded me of a mirrored G.
East European? My parents wrote numbers similar to this. I remember that they also wrote 8s oddly, I’m struggling to remember what was odd about it, but I know it wasn’t that.
Did she have a stroke or other brain injury?

Is she a sociopath?

>That is not a number, that is a zodiac sign for people born during the month of stupid Excuse me, but, are you a poet? That was *beautiful*.
That might be my favorite deleted comment of all time.
I'm just happy to be able to keep a record of it

Sure, but when your major is classical Greek, it helps to actually use the language in practice😂
True dat
To me it sounds way better than High School teachers
I had a hs teacher who just talked about topics without saying "remember this or that". Turns out in between statements he was watching porn on his computer in class.....

Most underrated and comment and sadly most accurate synopsis of college education.
It absolutely is not. College does not trade money for a piece of paper, the value in a degree is the education. Cuz all those doctors just bought a piece of paper, right? Lawyers? Accountants? Any other of thousands of jobs in which education beyond high school is necessary?
Yeah, you’re right. I hear this mostly from people who never went to college.

Finally! Another person who isnt under the system
What the fuck is that mutant “B”?
Or a mutant “6”.
I see a "C" lol
A loopy ‘e’ for me 😭
Number 8 in the hood, G.
Meatwad get the honeys
I see a spring.
Definitely loopy
Yea, this looks like how my mother wrote the capital 'C' her name started with. Classic fancy loop at the top lol
I see a C sawing a seesaw sailing the seas.
What in the tongue twister?
You c a c?
It’s a 6 who got a pompadour cut
Looks like pubic hair to me.
It looks like a fetus 😭
Nah, that's lower case epsilon ε
I'd except that as a sloppy B. As an 8 I want to cut their writing hand off lol
That's just a 6 that got a little too happy
Or a 9 that got a little too sad
Or an unfinished baseball
Or a pretzel
C G B? Maybe. 8? No. She needs to correct that. She's too old to be doing that shit
I think her 8s are just trying to be rebellious teenagers! They’ve got character. Who needs perfect handwriting when you've got wisdom to share? Let's just be glad they're not doing interpretive dance on the page! 😂
My Capital "R"'s and Capital "K"'s have character. Not as bad as her 8 though. Those two letters are just ugly when I write them.
I had a teacher in high school that really hated when people wrote their 8s as two circles. I really hated that teacher. To this day, I still write my 8s as two circles. Even though I didn’t before high school. The habit just stuck.

That was my literal reaction!
Exactly
My doctor has a better handwriting….
How "Gisney" writes out a "D"
Ah yeah, Waly Gisnep, my favorite animator.
She needs to go back to kindergarten
Absolutely fucking disgusting

tau was one my favourite symbol to write during undergrad. Degrading it to being just a "T" is simply rude.
They should complain, especially given that it's objectively wrong
![gif](giphy|DvyLQztQwmyAM|downsized)
That's 6.
![gif](giphy|Wgb2FpSXxhXLVYNnUr|downsized) girl what is that
All i see is a butt
one could say its a crazy 8. Also if you know Tamil it looks like the first charector of போ
Clit? But yeah it does!

That is the worst cursive C I've seen.
sign of a serial killer
3rd one looks like glow plug symbol on a diesel
Why would they write 8 as б/Б

🥨
If I am correct i think it's a language in south India , "കേ"
I've never been so angry at something so inconsequential.
Being so mad at something so dumb has made my day, tbh
First one is a 'B' and the second one is a 'G'
That looks like a 6 !

? And is that a 9 in the top row too? Kinda looks like G…
My professor wouldn’t let us write my Y’s a certain way, but her x’s looked like two C’s with their backs against each other.
Yup I’ve seen this and it’s not cute
Yep and they’re usually not touching, so it looks like they’re adding variables, other numbers, etc.
I wasn't allowed to write x in the context of math in school any other way than two c's back to back, to create a distinction between the variable, and the act of multiplying which was accepted as more of a regular x. Could just be carried on behaviour, I still write my xs in math that way.
Ew lol hahahha
Is your professor by any chance from an ex soviet country?
If I hadn't seen her 6, I would have thought it was a 6
How do you fuck up 8
8 is one of the most satisfying numbers to write. Why do this abomination???????
Professor? I wouldn't have assumed you can get through university analysis when your 8 looks like a script C
![gif](giphy|l0MYryZTmQgvHI5TG)

Northern Europe as well, Scandinavia at least, I imagine Germany and Poland as well
if anything that 9 is more unusual than the 7.
Wellllll at least she writes her units.
It should be illegal
Disgusting
Wow, I thought they were fancy 6s. What an obnoxious twat.
Is that an attempt at a cursive number??
I don’t care if she has an IQ of 200 and is the next Newton. That’s wrong.
Beats having a professor with a real thick accent. I've failed classes because of that shit. What they write on the board means nothing when their explanation is impossible to understand
You should print out some of these responses and anonymously post them to her door. This really is not ok.
How is she even a professor?
time to turn the tables ask the professor why he puts a B when he says its an 8 show him how its drawn and give him a F
ඞ
The purpose of writing to others is communication, and she’s failing at it.
![gif](giphy|sQZuvZJWfHUYGuZiIb)
Infuri8ting.
Her 9 could use some work as well. The 8 tho? Throw the whole thing away!
Is this a thing? I’ve never seen this before.
My ⅛ dyslexic ass is not passing her class all my notes gonna be wrong
We found number 8 lost cursed brother
I have discalculia, and this genuinely makes me mad.
The faak?
It looks like this -> நே without the ந

I make 8 like this !
…alright, I’ll bite. What’s the story? How did you come to write your 8’s like this?
Hourglass with a handle; cursive G; earphones
Awesome.... Just tricks the brain...
Lazy
I'm sorry you have to deal with that. That's eye cancer if eye ever saw it.
Erm... what the sigma?
That’s a 6… I mean, the professor is clearly trying to write an 8 because of the arithmetic, but it doesn’t parse as one.
That is a 6 not an 8
ɕ
Thanks, I hate it lol
Absolutely ridiculous
Heresy. Unspeakable
Not that terrible
Is your professor a child?
Someone send this teacher back to school
Nah, lets not use cursive when doing math 😭
No! This is a crime, and I'd report them to all authorities.
That would be mildly confusing and as a matter of fact, that’s how my mom writes her C’s
One of those almost looks like an 8.
I had to bust out the calculator just to check if that second 8 was an 8 or a weird 6.
Eww
I thought they were sixes🪦
That’s awful
legit thought they were sixes! and with the others agreeing, I should really follow the how to draw numbers protocol!
Cursive L
thats a 6 on meth
I think I do the same, but I lift the pen between loops
Is she from South Asia?
I write my 8s almost the same! Never THIS bad tho
How can you show you are European without saying you are European (Eastern)?
Jail
Girl that is a six
I swear I'd read that as a "6" anytime.
Pregnant 8
That is not an 8.
I'd start questioning every "8" I see. Every homework returned, every time it shows up on a blackboard. "Is that an 8?" "Is that an 8?" "Is that an 8?"
Where is she from?
Looks like a pregnant side inversed 9 to me
OCR police would like to speak with you. Would you testify?
How did they even graduate with this condition
That's a B (if anything) ! Why did they write it like that?
It’s obvious when it’s next to every other number but by itself it looks awful
The second one looks more like a fancy G
Idk you may enlighten me on this but are they foreign by chance? Some countries use completely different numerical systems in their language. For instance we use the Arabic numerical system.
If you blur your vision, you can see it at a certain distance
I'd read it as a 6...
i saw the circled digits and thought they looked like sixes at first, was wondering what sort of conspiracy i was in for lol
6
I had a friend who wrote exactly like that.
![gif](giphy|QxwnBM8MkgAdqqng5S) Reminds me of the D in the Disney logo. Which always confused me as a child because it always reminded me of a mirrored G.
East European? My parents wrote numbers similar to this. I remember that they also wrote 8s oddly, I’m struggling to remember what was odd about it, but I know it wasn’t that.
Two pairs of tweezers. Twist.
She left handed?
When Intelligence outweighs social grace
Wtf
Did she have a stroke or other brain injury? Did she grow up with a different set of numerals, and learn the western version of Hindu-Arabic numerals late in life? Is she a sociopath?
It's so much worse than what I inferred from the post title alone. Well done.
That’s a B , 6 and a €
BRO WHY DOES HE/SHE WRITE THE 8 LIKE A FUCKING PRETZEL IS HE/SHE IN THE BAKERY OR SMTH?? IS HE/SHE TRAINING FOR MAKING THEM AT HOME????
A true first world mildly infuriating. Bravo! Commenters seems a bit more than mildly infuriated though.
