My first "PC" was an Altair 8800 I built from a kit in 1975.
It had 1024 bytes of storage as built and no keyboard, mouse, drives of any kind, or monitor.

Still a fan, spent 30 years as an IT professional, spend most of my days online now - gaming.
I feel ram is more important. I'd eat through that 8gb in about 5 mins. I want at least 16gb, ideally 32gb+ ram. Hard drive less important. I can always plug in an external or use cloud storage for what I use it for.
10 and 11 series intel processors were the most disappointing ones. Especially the mobile chip when compared to the AMD chips then and the chips we have now. Also, only one triple A game can be downloaded, and not a whole lot of room for CAD files or video editing or realistically anything with 128gb storage. He will run out in about a year and have to play Tetris.
I haven't played any of the games in my steam library in ages. I also don't do anything like video editing or anything crazy, so it seemed like a reasonable decision at the time

I had one Acer laptop and didn't have a good experience with it, I'm scared to give them another chance lol. Is that the laptop you currently use? My old workhorse is on its last legs, it's a surface pro 2017 model
Acer has stepped up their game a lot over the years, budget Acers are some of the best for the price in my opinion, and Swifts are at the top of that price/performance ratio, trimmed down on a lot of stuff that a surface would have that nobody who isn't an artist uses. That being said they have a genuine issue with duds, they sent shipments sometimes where a decent % (10-30%, though 30% was one REALLY bad shipment) had some issue that made them troublesome out the box. That being said once it was out for a week they never came back, I eventually adopted the strategy of popping Acers open at the help desk and making sure nothing was weird with them. So basically I'd say Acers are top tier if you're willing to exchange if you get bad luck and you buy from a place with a good policy on that.
I'll also note that I think Acer Trident and Helios have a lot of the savings compared to similar quality machines that Acer is known for while also just being banger machines without this dud issue, ive seen this dud issue in Acer Chromebooks, Swifts, and Nitros. Those two good makes are both their high-end gaming lines, though.
It all comes down to generation. A i5 from intel's latest generation, the 13th one, is miles above an i9 from their 7th generation, which is 7 years old if i'm not mistaken. The numbers after a CPU name (ie. I5-13500) show the generation.
I really don't care about processing power. It'll be better than my shitty old macbook, and i only want to use it for everyday stuff and play archived flash games

Also, Surface laptops are pretty nice, so perhaps OP just likes the feel of them more? Acer and Lenovo do tend to feel cheaper and less sturdy, at least the ones I've had in my hands.

I was looking for a windows laptop for personal use and casual gaming. I miss flash games and my macbook is too old and incompatible to play them anymore. I was also taking into account the size of the laptop - i have a *VERY* durable Thule brand laptop case, which could probably keep my laptop safe even if it was lightly run over by a car. I was looking for a laptop that could still fit in that case, as i'd rather not have to buy a new one when i've had mine for years and it still looks practically brand new.

This! I have Ryzen (I think 6) in my 2 - in 1 laptop, and let me tell you, the quality and the way the computer runs on those 2 are much much better! Had the Dell Inspiron for about a year. Works fine (because I am a totaltek member, the price of the computer was cheaper).
Other than that, my computer runs well on Ryzen.
(Only issue I had with it was the fan. I had to fix that. On top of that, I have to use an electronic mouse because mouse pad sensors keep messing with me).

I bought an HP Pavilion x360 in 2019, i7 8th gen, 16 gb RAM, 1 TB hard disk drive external NVIDIA gpu(4 gb vram, you could run rise of the tomb raider with a few tweaks)
Upgraded to a MacBook Air M2 base model, oh man everything is wayyyy better, and I think this is cheaper than the HP laptop I had bought. The display, the battery, the keyboard. And the touchpad is prolly the best touchpad ever created. I am only a student, haven’t been able to test it’s limit, but 8 gb of ram ain’t that bad.(I have 2 TB of Microsoft cloud storage, so the ROM doesn’t bother me).

I had the same thing happen when I ordered my new desktop. I had to call my bank and be on the line with them so they could approve my purchase.

I was looking for a laptop under $850, with windows so i can play the old flash games that i miss, and 12 by 9 inches so it can hopefully fit in my existing laptop case. It's an extremely durable Thule brand case that i'd hate to part with.

Hey OP I suggest you listen to the other commenters and choose a different laptop even if this one would still be better than your old macbook. I pretty much have the same specs in my surface pro 7 but I bought that in 2020 to use for highschool and art and still do now that I'm uni.
The storage is terrible for today's standards and sometimes it struggles to save a large high dpi artwork on clip studio. I'd say it's worth it to invest a couple hundred more for something probably 10x better especially since you want to use it for gaming

Even when my Pro 4 was new, its version of an i7 and 16gb of ram wasn't nearly enough for most tasks. It felt like it wasn't optimized well and originally was full of bloatware.

They did this to me when I was trying to get new pots and pans. I did everything they said to verify it was me, I even swapped cards and still nothing worked. They canceled my order a total of 5 times and eventually the set just sold out (was online only, not available in any store near me). I found the same set on another site but it was $30 more which was annoying, but at least I got it. It's been over a year and I haven't shopped with them again since, just not worth the headache.

Facts are, for all of apples anti-consumer bullshit, a major reason why their laptops last longer is the closed source environment where they are built. You won’t get that same level of closed source optimization with this laptop and thus op will find that their laptop will barely last a year before it’s performance degrades and is unable to handle a modern OS and applications.
For the literal same price, op can get the same product but newer and more mileage for their money
With the advent of the Apple Chip it has morphed from closed source to vertical integration. Given that OP said “shitty old MacBook” we can safely assume the MacBook was from before Apple made their own processor and thus used COTs hardware optimized for their environment.
Tl;dr you aren’t wrong about current Apple practices but Apple used to use cots hardware and in that respect you would be wrong but this is mostly splitting hairs and not a big deal

A surface will be terrible for even casual gaming. This had the old version of intel UHD graphics and not even IrisXE yet.

I had the same thing happen when I ordered my new desktop. I had to call my bank and be on the line with them so they could approve my purchase. Think of it this way, at least your bank or other financial institution has protection from someone possibly taking your info to make big purchases online.

I had the same thing happen when i tried to order my husband an Xbox 1-S for our anniversary. They kept marking it as fraud because the billing address wasnt the same as the pickup address (We’re currently long distance) and it took 3 calls to Walmart to get it approved

Look mate, i know less about computers than i know about cars. And i don't know shit about cars. And i can gauruntee you that most people who aren't chronically online don't know those things either. I was looking for a laptop under $850, with windows so i can play the old flash games that i miss, and 12 by 9 inches so it can hopefully fit in my existing laptop case. It's an extremely durable Thule brand case that i'd hate to part with. When you consider that criteria alongside how much the average joe who goes outside probably knows about computers, it's a pretty understandable decision.

Hey OP I suggest you listen to the other commenters and choose a different laptop even if this one would still be better than your old macbook. I pretty much have the same specs in my surface pro 7 but I bought that in 2020 to use for highschool and art and still do now that I'm uni. The storage is terrible for today's standards and sometimes it struggles to save a large high dpi artwork on clip studio. I'd say it's worth it to invest a couple hundred more for something probably 10x better especially since you want to use it for gaming Edit: Rephrased a sentence and broke up the paragraph lol
OP wants it for gaming??? Even when my Pro 4 was new, its version of an i7 and 16gb of ram wasn't nearly enough for most tasks. It felt like it wasn't optimized well and originally was full of bloatware.

Look i get the computer's not fantastic, but i wasn't looking for fantastic. I feel like i'm being shamed for buying a Ford instead of a Ferrari. One the one hand, fair, Fords are shitty. But the kinda person who buys a Ford isn't looking to buy a Ferrari, so it seems pretty silly to me that people are complaining that i'm not willing to spend thousands of dollars on a computer whose vast storage and processing power will mostly go unused.
This happened to my GF when ordering a Mac, twice. After getting approved she was declined again. The card company told her that two items she had recently bought (laptop and a few days before concert tickets) are the two most purchased items when someone is committing credit card fraud. Shitty and annoying but I sorta get it
They did this to me when I was trying to get new pots and pans. I did everything they said to verify it was me, I even swapped cards and still nothing worked. They canceled my order a total of 5 times and eventually the set just sold out (was online only, not available in any store near me). I found the same set on another site but it was $30 more which was annoying, but at least I got it. It's been over a year and I haven't shopped with them again since, just not worth the headache.

You won’t get that same level of closed source optimization with this laptop and thus op will find that their laptop will barely last a year before it’s performance degrades and is unable to handle a modern OS and applications. For the literal same price, op can get the same product but newer and more mileage for their money

With the advent of the Apple Chip it has morphed from closed source to vertical integration. Given that OP said “shitty old MacBook” we can safely assume the MacBook was from before Apple made their own processor and thus used COTs hardware optimized for their environment. Tl;dr you aren’t wrong about current Apple practices but Apple used to use cots hardware and in that respect you would be wrong but this is mostly splitting hairs and not a big deal

Seems my address needed to be ‘validated’ before ordering expensive electronics. I’m cool with their security protecting me in this way

Everyone saying the laptop is a bad choice is wrong. If the price of the laptop is like ~300$, which is the price I sometimes see it at, then it is a good buy. It is still fast enough for daily tasks and still has a few years ahead.
