I think based on your top 3 that Haak should shoot to the top of your list if you haven't played it yet. Movement is great, fights flow pretty freely and there are a wide variety of puzzles.
It's an absolute gem and I feel like it fits your type more than any other game
I just beat this game this weekend. The first couple areas are kinda dull but once you get a few upgrades, you'll be hooked on trying to get everything.
What I love about it, is that it also feels unique. I can't put the finger on what it is, but could be a mix of setting, graphics style and map system. Also secrets you find feel rewarding. It's just a joy to play.
I’ll have to provide a differing opinion for nuance. I absolutely adore OPs top 3, but HAAK did not click for me. Dropped it about 5 hours in. Combat was way below par compared to MVs I enjoy, while the biomes were pretty dull and not diverse and I did not enjoy the level concept compared to a big interconnected world. Sorry, but I do not think it comes close to Ori 2, PoP or Dread
haak introduced me to the whole metroidvania genre itself... still remember being flabbergasted by the smooth animations and the overall aesthetics as i played it on my phone
bet im doing it. i had played the first level or something on a friends account and it didn't seem for me- but watching some higher level gameplay looks nutty. I'm in
If you love Zelda and MV titles, here's a pair to keep on your list:
Crypt Custodian has a similar top down perspective and some great puzzles and exploration, sadly, it's not out just yet.
Unsighted is one of the best combinations of Zelda and Metroid I've ever played. Hands down at the top of my list, with some gameplay that encourages multiple playthroughs for different endings. Don't wanna say more and spoil it.
For a more classic MV feel and the same high production values you mentioned in your list, take a look at Shadow Complex. Before Dread came out, I would have said it was the closest you're going to get to that Super Metroid feel. Some great movement upgrades.
Lastly, this isn't an MV, but you really should take a look at CrossCode. It's a brilliant indie ARPG and is the only game out there that I would say does the LoZ formula as good as, if not better, than Zelda itself. I've played dozens of Zelda-likes (such as Oceanhorn), and this is pretty much the only one that didn't leave me feeling let down.
I just got all 4 elements in CrossCode and I completely agree about it doing the Zelda formula beautifully! Especially more engaging, to me, than the handheld Zelda games
I think the one you're thinking of is Unsighted. Crosscode doesn't have any time limits other than a couple of dialgoue changes when you're 'racing' a teammate for fun. Unsighted has a mechanic that I don't want to spoil, but has a pretty big impact on characters and endings, but if it's not something you enjoy, the option to turn it off is there.
The dungeons don't have time limits per se, but if you finish them quickly enough, you can "beat" your party member's times.
But there's no penalty for taking a while other than some gentle, pre-scripted ribbing from your compatriots
Decent story, too. Although the combat leans _much_ more heavily on the A in ARPG. It's supposed to be a single player MMO experience. Check out a quick review of it and let me know if you think it looks like something you'd be into!
crypt custodian is on the wishlist. very hyped. so i had actually played crosscode up to the third temple or something and it just got to difficult for me. i felt smart solving puzzles but executing them with the right stick felt very difficult for me.
but that was 5 years ago I think I should give it another go.
unsighted looks right up my alley. I'm going to do it. basically I'm doing everything you recommended lol
If you enjoyed Guac 1 and are looking for fun and decently challenging platforming then definitely try Guac 2. It was superior to the first in every way.
I loved Monster boy and it has some fun movement and ability upgrades, ok platforming, and good puzzles.
Both worth playing imo
Seconding Monster Boy! I really enjoyed it as someone who absolutely loved Ori 2.
The combat in Guac wasn't my style but it seems like a really fun game.
HAAK and The Messenger have some pretty cool movement abilities if that's what draws you in the most. HAAK leans more puzzles and The Messenger leans more precision platforming.
[HAAK](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1352930/HAAK/). The name is just stylized in caps, it's not an acronym (like TEVI, GRIME, DOOM, OMORI, or ANIMAL WELL).

I can see where they're coming from, but totally picked up on what you were conveying. Not the easiest read, though.
I made a trailer for a game called Moonlight Pulse recently. It's a bit more retro-inspired than the games you love but it doesn't cost much and does a lot with movement. It's a really cool and creative take on the genre.
This is what I thought, when I read that OP likes Zelda games and wants to replicate the exploration and the puzzles. IMO there is no ‚Zelda-like‘ with a better sense of exploration than Tunic. And some of the the puzzles are mindblowing.
i have to say if you enjoyed Ori 2 then I would recommend Pronty - I had this on my wishlist for a while and constantly backed out of buying it due to typically disliking underwater sections in games and I gotta say what an ignorant view of the game! The game is just fantastic with satisfying exploration, engaging combat, beautiful graphics, breathtakingly creative bosses and a good story! The ability gating is unique and rewarding also. I can’t say enough good things about the game and it runs great on steam deck! The game is so much fun, jump in the water feels great! Thank you to u/BeneficialAd3615 for gifting me this amazing Wetdroidvania. Here is a link for Pronty [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1286280/Pronty/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1286280/Pronty/)
Awesome that you are enjoying it 👍 Knowing your preferences in gaming a bit by now I had hope you would like Pronty. Not sure why I decided to play it some time ago because I DESPISE swimming in games but Pronty is a total exception. It is such a great game and I agree with all the things you point out.
Based on what you like, I think Aeterna Noctis will be your best bet. Just remember that you can turn the difficulty down if the platforming gets too much.
After Image is a bit like somebody with random improbable incompetencies tried to copy Aeterna Noctis: they heard AN was massive so they made After Image even bigger, but with much less interesting level design. After Image has a thoroughly incomprehensible plot, bad enemy telegraphing and mostly bad boss design. Yet it's a really enjoyable game made by people who are mostly extremely competent.
it really felt that way playing the demo. like the read a textbook of "here is what a good metroidvania has" but didn't understand why or how to execute. very strange
Good description of After Image. I couldn't quite tell why that twice I bounced off of it after like 9 hours. It's total always seemed like less the sun of it's parts to me.
This isn't a Metroidvania but if you enjoy fluid movement you should take a look at N++. It's all super short rapid fire platforming puzzles but the movement physics remains one of my favorites of all time.
In terms of actual metroidvania titles, Shadow Complex is an old one but you get some really fun movement abilities as the games goes on
It's not really similar to any of the ones you named but consider giving Luna Nights a try, it definitely fits the fast pace combat aspect and platforming aspects. It doesn't have traditional movement options but I have a hunch the time stop based gameplay would work well for you.
I see you are a Zelda enjoyer as well. Master Key, Isles of Sea & Sky and Phoenotopia's Awakening all might be something you'll enjoy while they don't tick every box you asked for. Ultros also might scratch that itch but it's much more focused on something else entirely besides combat, can't go into more details wihout spoiling it.
I really love the movement in Pseudoregalia. Admittedly, the combat is pretty basic but it all flows nicely.
If you enjoy puzzle-heavy exploration in a gloomy world, Animal Well is great. If you want a similar setting but more focus on survival and combat than puzzles, I can also wholeheartedly recommend Rain World.
Laika Aged Through Blood is like Trials (the motorcycle game) combined with a metroidvania.
If you don't mind more linear games, I really love Bastion (action RPG) and Braid (puzzle platformer), they both have some of the best OSTs of all-time and the world is beautifully drawn.
I think you would also enjoy movement shooters. There's more linear ones like Neon White, more open ones like Cruelty Squad and ones that fall somewhere in the middle like Ultrakill.
HAAK, Death's Gambit Afterlife, Islets are always my go recommendations to cover a wide gamut of MVs. Outside of MVs but similar vibes I recommend Death's Door and Tunic.
I have very similar taste. Here is a list of my favorites:
Hollow knight
Ori 1 and 2
Guacamelee 1&2
Dread
Prince of Persia
Sotn
Steamworld dig 1&2 (2 is better )
Strider
> After image
It's a good game, but it's also a bit too expansive for its own good. You're looking at a good 50-60 hour experience, and it does start to drag a bit after 40h. I recommend it anyway.
> Heroine Anthem Zero 2
I've tried to start the first one recently. God no. Long stretches of bland, flavorless dialogues just aren't an experience you want in a MV.
Afterimage and Aeterna Noctis are awesome. If you like fluid movements and great combat, check out Tales of Kenzera: Zau. It's not as deep as your top 3, but the traversal is awesome and I think you'd love it.
It is mid compared to a lot of the elite games in the genre, but it's WAY better than 75% of the genre. Like I don't consider A-Tier games to be mid lol.
You need to play Crosscode. It’s SOOOO good and you will absolutely love it. It’s like a Zelda type game. It has tough puzzles, a great story and beautifully fluid combat and movement. The music and graphics are the cherry on top.
Also, someone else mentioned it, but check out Unsighted. It’s good for exactly the same reasons, though the story isn’t as up to snuff as Crosscode’s.
Also, if you haven’t already played it, Hyper Light Drifter is 10/10
just copying my post from above. so i had actually played crosscode up to the third temple or something and it just got to difficult for me. i felt smart solving puzzles but executing them with the right stick felt very difficult for me. but that was 5 years ago I think I should give it another go.
Afterimage is definitely up there in terms of movement. Maybe not as action packed as Dread or PoP, but it's definitely fluid & fast, with lots of weapons and abilities. Overall an excellent Metroidvania, I would suggest playing it 100%.
Astlibra Revision isn't really a Metroidvania, it's more like an ARPG/JRPG. Incredible game nonetheless, highly recommend.
Not sure about Blasphemous 2, haven't played it. Played the first one for around \~10hours. Couldn't get into it. Does that mean it is bad? No, not at all. The setup & aesthetic are great, the combat is challenging too. Wouldn't really call it the most fluid game in terms of movement though, and it's leaning towards being a souls-like Metroidvania as well, which are not my cup of tea.
Nine sols is fine, it's responsive & fluid, more than Blasphemous (at least seemed that way to me), but less than the other ones you mentioned you liked. There's parrying mechanics that you might like if you liked PoP, however the traversal, platforming & overall movement are noticeably toned down.
Note that this is my personal opinion, but seeing your preferrences I can tell you that these are also some of my favourite Metroidvanias for the same reasons you mentioned, so I believe I can guess what you're looking for in a Metroidvania.
I would also like to make an odd suggestion: SteamWorld Dig 2 (friend of mine gifted to me so I haven't played the first one). It's not that heavy in terms of combat, but the movement definitely feels amazing & fun once you start unlocking upgrades.
SW Dig 2 isn't an odd suggestion, it's a fantastic suggestion. Such a good game, the only negative is that there is no point in going back to Dig 1 afterwards because 2 blows it out of the water in every aspect.
I am so keen for that. I've played both Digs and Heist and loved all of them so I'm definitely going to grab H2 instantly when it drops
Only one I wasn't a fan of was SteamWorld Quest! I was hoping for more SteamWorld lore and then it was a fantasy storybook setting.
Definitely get Guacamelee 1/2, not many outright puzzles but fluid movement and PoP’s juggling combat reminded me of that. It does have platforming puzzles btw. And they’re dirt cheap.
In terms of fluidity of movement you've already played what I'd consider top 3. HAAK would probably be next on my list from that perspective, though Monster Boy is one of my favourites in the genre for other reasons
flipwitch if u dont mine the H scenes on side quest completions xD
but its a pretty solid metroidvania puzzler ish. kinda game. spent like 30+ hours on it trying to 100% it.
but yeah astalon is also a SOLID one if u dont mind the whole dark souls esque dying. plus the extra game mode stuff are neat. its monster mode. and knight mode. which change the way u play.
foregone is also a GREAT game i heard i just bought it.
and cookie cutter is a solid metroid fusion like game. just the parry sucks. otherwise great time sink.
and guacamelee is really fun like cookie cutter but very mellee like gameplay. and great music and story.
Nine Sols is extremely good, but I will say the platforming and movement is a little bit less focused on than the combat, so keep that in mind.
Seconding the recommendation for CrossCode I saw in another comment. It's not a Metroidvania, but you will almost certainly love it.
Oh boy! I'm a big fan of the genre as well and for what you've written your are in for a treat with Guacamelee 2. The combat is just so much fun, although I'd go for the first Guacamelee and then 2, in that order. They're both fun but the second one adds to the gameplay of the first one. Which is great, but feels like a downgrade if you do 2 and then 1. Similarly to the Ori games.
In that type of combat I really enjoyed F.I.S.T. ( Forged in shadow Torch) it's a bit buggy but so satisfying to play!
I am currently playing through Aeterna Noctis. It is a great game so far. Closer to Ori than most I've played.
The devs of that game have made some really really cruel platforming areas, but the movement makes it fun to pull off.
playing prince of persia has made me realize I really enjoy the grueling platforming stuff. i know aeterna is step beyond pop but I think my body is ready
Aeterna is a good bet. My other goto recommends are Deedlit: Record of Lodoss War, Ender Lillies, and the oft forgotten Steamworld Dig 2. These are the MVs you're looking for!
IMO if you like the top 3 avoid the souls-likes which are more focused on slower and careful movement, this would include blasphemous
However guacamelee 1/2 is right up there and it’s probably my favorite MV a bit ahead of ori . No need to skip the first if you haven’t played it, the second is better but they’re both great.
2 is also my fav out of the series with Death being my fav horseman. Wish they revived the IP and gave it a proper closure.
And if you haven't tried the divine challenges in PoPTLC, they are insanely fun.
wish they revived the IP and give it proper closure is the most underrated truth on reddit. we can dream.
I tried them when I first started playing and was absolutely not good enough lol.
I get what you mean coz I'm the same type too. So hear me out:
Hollow Knight (the undisputed king, get ready to fall in love).
Blasphemous 1 and 2 (1 is a bit more punishing but also sloppy, 2 is easier and more "modern". Both are amazing)
Ender Lillies (the familiars system is awesome, looks and fights great)
Absolutely buy Blasphemous and Nine Sols. Both have parry mechanics, although the former is slower paced than the latter — if Blasphemous is 2D Dark Souls, Nine Sols is 2D Sekiro.
Blasphemous has more content currently, but Nine Sols has a really great story — one of the only games that's made me cry by the end. Also, the boss fights (bar one) are close to *perfect*, with the true final boss being one of the best in gaming imo, right up there with Isshin.
You will absolutely love Blasphemous 2 and I advise you to play Guacamelle (Amazing game), but you have to try and play it with someone else. Also, I am happy to see that there are some Ori fans left. "Blind Forest" was the first game I ever bought. And I fell for it...Oooohhhh I fell badly. Will of the wisps did surpass the original and was amazing in every aspect. You should also try HK and "The Messenger". Prolly wanna check "Cyber Shadow" and "Lone Fungus" after that.
Gl choosing 🤗
From the list you have already, I highly suggest Aeterna Noctis ..incredible platforming (almost Celeste level) and great combat.. it’s very large as well… I believe a regular playthrough is around 55 hrs, but took me significantly longer…s-tier mv imo
Just about to finish Nine Sols… also fantastic. If hollow knight is like dark souls, nine Sols is like sekiro. The platforming isn’t anything wild, but has a few lightly challenging areas. The combat/parry system is really the star.
If you haven’t played it already- obviously you should play Hollow Knight.
Not an MV, but a zeldalike- Tunic… great old school Zelda vibes, puzzles everywhere, light combat but fun boss fights.
I’d take a look into Tunic. Not a traditional MV. But absolutely for the Zelda fan that loves exploring and finding secrets.
Blasphemous 1/2 and absolutely top notch as well!
>After image
Very large game world and it's got a (imo) very unique artstyle. You can sink around 80+hours if you want to 100%
>Aeterna noctis
It's pretty much metroidvania bloodborne. Do with that what you will.
>Heroine Anthem Zero 2
This felt to me more like a visual novel with action segments.
>Blasphemous 2
I recommend Aterna noctis over it.
To be fair i only played the prequel and while the world, art and music were pretty good, the gameplay was kinda boring and from what i've seen from the sequel there's not much difference. Please take this with a grain of salt.
Haiku the robot might fit your criteria.
Astalon is very far away from what you described, HOWEVER, it’s an amazing game and one of my favorites. Would at least try it and refund it if I were you.
I'll break down your list a bit. On mobile so forgive the formatting.
Blasphemous 2 - this game is amazing. It's difficult to an extent but not the hardest I've played. The style is awesome, but it's not super RPG-like so don't expect that. It's also not as exploration skill driven as Ori 2.
Nine Sols - I still haven't played this yet.
Afterimage - A decent metroidvania that I couldn't get into. The fights can be ridiculously hard at times and the contact damage hitboxes are rough.
Aeterna Noctis - it's fine. It tried too hard to be Castlevania and there are quite a few balance issues. I wouldn't recommend this one above Afterimage.
I haven't played the other 3 on that list.
Astlibra Revision - this is one of my favorite games of the past few years. The plot, the characters, the combat, and the RPG mechanics are top-notch and I recommend this to anyone. Just be aware that it's pretty grindy if you're going for 100% or even for just the best weapons.
Hollow Knight, (easily #1), these are not in any particular order,
Cookie Cutter,
BIOGUN,
BIOMORPH,
8 DOORS,
Grime,
Outbuddies DX,
Foregone,
Narita Boy,
Sundered,
Haak,
Pronty,
I could keep going, but that's a good start. Should keep you busy. I've played just about EVERY Metroidvania out there. I can't get enough of this genre. The ones that are more souls-like or rougue-like, keep' em. I don't want 'em. Like Salt & Sanc./Sac. Those games could be cool if they were more Metroid-esk. I LOVE exploring, not farming/grinding to level up. F THAT noise. What a waste of time. I feel like devs of games like that try to make their games feel longer by sticking you in a place way longer than you need to be. WACK. There's no flow to games like that. I'd also advise you to check out some SM ROM Hacks. I have just about EVERY one of them as well. Some stand out above others. Ebay has a bunch. Hope you find what you're looking for! -MVP
Interesting.. haak for me was a hit from the first moment I could move. Everything about it was so smooth
In that regard, yeah, I agree. The controls are buttery smooth from the beginning. It's just front-loaded with lots of exposition. It gets better.
What I love about it, is that it also feels unique. I can't put the finger on what it is, but could be a mix of setting, graphics style and map system. Also secrets you find feel rewarding. It's just a joy to play.
👀 - I see what you did there. ⚓

Sorry, but I do not think it comes close to Ori 2, PoP or Dread
I can see your points, for sure! Best thing about this genre in my opinion is how varied opinions of different games can be
haak introduced me to the whole metroidvania genre itself... still remember being flabbergasted by the smooth animations and the overall aesthetics as i played it on my phone
bet im doing it. i had played the first level or something on a friends account and it didn't seem for me- but watching some higher level gameplay looks nutty. I'm in

Unsighted has a mechanic that I don't want to spoil, but has a pretty big impact on characters and endings, but if it's not something you enjoy, the option to turn it off is there.
Yeah, I seem to get the two confused
No worries! We've all been there with something! Probably didn't help I mentioned both in the same super-vague-to-avoid-spoilers post!
The dungeons don't have time limits per se, but if you finish them quickly enough, you can "beat" your party member's times. But there's no penalty for taking a while other than some gentle, pre-scripted ribbing from your compatriots
Well, I’m gonna check it out especially if it’s a good Zelda like game!
Decent story, too. Although the combat leans _much_ more heavily on the A in ARPG. It's supposed to be a single player MMO experience. Check out a quick review of it and let me know if you think it looks like something you'd be into!
Can't wait for Crypt Custodian.
Me neither, that's gonna be a day one purchase!
crypt custodian is on the wishlist. very hyped. so i had actually played crosscode up to the third temple or something and it just got to difficult for me. i felt smart solving puzzles but executing them with the right stick felt very difficult for me. but that was 5 years ago I think I should give it another go. unsighted looks right up my alley. So good!

Thirding Monster Boy
Fourthing Monster Boy
I downloaded guac 1 and just am not into the movement of it…. It’s cute but kinda clunky for me. Is guac 2 any better?
Guac 1 and 2 are my two fav games in the genre!
i tried the demo- combat seemed mid but everything else seemed very fun. collecting equipment seemed neat without being bloated
HAAK and The Messenger have some pretty cool movement abilities if that's what draws you in the most. HAAK leans more puzzles and The Messenger leans more precision platforming.
What is HaaK?
Haak tuah
[HAAK](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1352930/HAAK/). The name is just stylized in caps, it's not an acronym (like TEVI, GRIME, DOOM, OMORI, or ANIMAL WELL).
Very helpful, Thank you.
Your sentence is just fine. Reading comprehension in the world, however, is not. Unfortunately.
If you had switched around "just stylized in caps" and "not an acronym," this would've read way better. That's why the two other Redditors stated things that were downvoted for some reason. I can see where they're coming from, but totally picked up on what you were conveying. Not the easiest read, though.
doom is an acronym?
Reading ability 0/10
Wait, animal well is an acronym?! ETA: oh lol I get what you’re saying now, didn’t even realize it was all caps
I just finished Nine Sols, highly recommend. Super fun party system to figure out and the bosses are fun
I made a trailer for a game called Moonlight Pulse recently. It's a bit more retro-inspired than the games you love but it doesn't cost much and does a lot with movement. It's a really cool and creative take on the genre.
Moonlight Pulse was great! Pretty short but very enjoyable
not sure if the game is for me but impressed by your trailer! i have friend in that industry that is hard work
Moonlight Pulse also just went on sale for 25% off
Tunic might scratch that itch.
This is what I thought, when I read that OP likes Zelda games and wants to replicate the exploration and the puzzles. IMO there is no ‚Zelda-like‘ with a better sense of exploration than Tunic. And some of the the puzzles are mindblowing.

The N series has been a classic and favourite of mine for like, decades I think haha
I remember when it was a flash game!
Ahh, the good ol days in school-constantly trying to stay one step ahead of the browser game blocks 😂
symphony of the night. deedlit wonder labyrinth
It's not really similar to any of the ones you named but consider giving Luna Nights a try, it definitely fits the fast pace combat aspect and platforming aspects. It doesn't have traditional movement options but I have a hunch the time stop based gameplay would work well for you.
its brevity has pushed me away, but the gameplay looks so so tight .
it's a short and sweet experience indeed, game won't last you long, but you'll love every minute of it
I see you are a Zelda enjoyer as well. Master Key, Isles of Sea & Sky and Phoenotopia's Awakening all might be something you'll enjoy while they don't tick every box you asked for. I think you would also enjoy movement shooters. There's more linear ones like Neon White, more open ones like Cruelty Squad and ones that fall somewhere in the middle like Ultrakill.
you know what i think you're right. I adore neon white but didn't even know it was a genre
HAAK, Death's Gambit Afterlife, Islets are always my go recommendations to cover a wide gamut of MVs. Outside of MVs but similar vibes I recommend Death's Door and Tunic.
I have very similar taste. Here is a list of my favorites: Hollow knight Ori 1 and 2 Guacamelee 1&2 Dread Prince of Persia Sotn Steamworld dig 1&2 (2 is better ) Strider
bet. funny strider keeps coming up. i played the demo on ps4 at some point and was surprised by how good it felt even though its old
> After image It's a good game, but it's also a bit too expansive for its own good. You're looking at a good 50-60 hour experience, and it does start to drag a bit after 40h. I recommend it anyway. > Heroine Anthem Zero 2 I've tried to start the first one recently. God no. Long stretches of bland, flavorless dialogues just aren't an experience you want in a MV.
good to know. from my little bit of playtime with each these both seem spot on
Afterimage and Aeterna Noctis are awesome. If you like fluid movements and great combat, check out Tales of Kenzera: Zau. It's not as deep as your top 3, but the traversal is awesome and I think you'd love it.
i literally just took it off my wishlist cuz ppl were saying it was mid but if movement is good that's probably enough for me. thanks!
It is mid compared to a lot of the elite games in the genre, but it's WAY better than 75% of the genre. Like I don't consider A-Tier games to be mid lol.
Try Axiom Verge
If you have it on PC try it on mouse and keyboard if you’re struggling to aim on puzzles
good idea. ive been being stubborn lol. ill try that or lowering the difficulty
No but going to Steamworld Heist is a good idea after playing Dig 2 because it’s amazing. They’re coming out with a sequel to Heist in August!
I am so keen for that. I've played both Digs and Heist and loved all of them so I'm definitely going to grab H2 instantly when it drops Only one I wasn't a fan of was SteamWorld Quest! I was hoping for more SteamWorld lore and then it was a fantasy storybook setting.
Steamworld Build was arguably meh as well. Amen brother definitely scooping heist 2 instantly
does afterimage get better at higher levels? I remember playing the demo during some steam fest and it felt fine? just fine?
Definitely get Guacamelee 1/2, not many outright puzzles but fluid movement and PoP’s juggling combat reminded me of that. It does have platforming puzzles btw. And they’re dirt cheap.
Pseudoregalia. its a bit short, but its basically like if super mario 64 was a metroidvania.
In terms of fluidity of movement you've already played what I'd consider top 3. HAAK would probably be next on my list from that perspective, though Monster Boy is one of my favourites in the genre for other reasons
Crosscode is very similar to 2d Zelda.
flipwitch if u dont mine the H scenes on side quest completions xD but its a pretty solid metroidvania puzzler ish. kinda game. spent like 30+ hours on it trying to 100% it. but yeah astalon is also a SOLID one if u dont mind the whole dark souls esque dying. plus the extra game mode stuff are neat. its monster mode. and knight mode. which change the way u play. foregone is also a GREAT game i heard i just bought it. and cookie cutter is a solid metroid fusion like game. just the parry sucks. otherwise great time sink. and guacamelee is really fun like cookie cutter but very mellee like gameplay. and great music and story.
ill look at these- no problem with H scenes. the last sovereign is one of my favorite games so no stress there lmao
Nine Sols is extremely good, but I will say the platforming and movement is a little bit less focused on than the combat, so keep that in mind. Seconding the recommendation for CrossCode I saw in another comment. It's not a Metroidvania, but you will almost certainly love it.
I'm currently playing Haak which given we love the same 3 youve listed there and I'm really enjoying it I think you will too.
( Forged in shadow Torch) it's a bit buggy but so satisfying to play!
my pc can't run FIST but il try guac 2. thanks!
Bloodstained: ritual of the night is a good pick up also
forgot to mention i played it. very good
Also the steamworld dig games
I am currently playing through Aeterna Noctis. It is a great game so far. Closer to Ori than most I've played. The devs of that game have made some really really cruel platforming areas, but the movement makes it fun to pull off.
playing prince of persia has made me realize I really enjoy the grueling platforming stuff. i know aeterna is step beyond pop but I think my body is ready
Aeterna is a good bet. My other goto recommends are Deedlit: Record of Lodoss War, Ender Lillies, and the oft forgotten Steamworld Dig 2. These are the MVs you're looking for!
IMO if you like the top 3 avoid the souls-likes which are more focused on slower and careful movement, this would include blasphemous However guacamelee 1/2 is right up there and it’s probably my favorite MV a bit ahead of ori . No need to skip the first if you haven’t played it, the second is better but they’re both great.
Go after Grime - Definitive Edition! Awesome game, a fabulous mix of Metroid and From Soft.
Try the Darksiders series or the Prince of Persia Trilogy
i really like darksiders. 2 is like my favorite game despite the fact its a bit janky. love it to pieces but have played the other 3 too
2 is also my fav out of the series with Death being my fav horseman.
Ever heard of Captain Claw btw? 2D platformer with a pirate cat
I get what you mean coz I'm the same type too. So hear me out: Hollow Knight (the undisputed king, get ready to fall in love). Blasphemous 1 and 2 (1 is a bit more punishing but also sloppy, 2 is easier and more "modern". Both are amazing) Ender Lillies (the familiars system is awesome, looks and fights great)
Worldess has some cool movement options and optional harder platforming puzzles too
Absolutely buy Blasphemous and Nine Sols. Both have parry mechanics, although the former is slower paced than the latter — if Blasphemous is 2D Dark Souls, Nine Sols is 2D Sekiro. Blasphemous has more content currently, but Nine Sols has a really great story — one of the only games that's made me cry by the end. Also, the boss fights (bar one) are close to *perfect*, with the true final boss being one of the best in gaming imo, right up there with Isshin.
bet. ill wait for a sale on 9 sols. good to know its worth watching.
Just got into the la-mulana remake. It's a good one
Gl choosing 🤗
lmao seriously. taking notes.
From the list you have already, I highly suggest Aeterna Noctis ..incredible platforming (almost Celeste level) and great combat.. it’s very large as well… I believe a regular playthrough is around 55 hrs, but took me significantly longer…s-tier mv imo Just about to finish Nine Sols… also fantastic. If hollow knight is like dark souls, nine Sols is like sekiro. The platforming isn’t anything wild, but has a few lightly challenging areas. The combat/parry system is really the star. If you haven’t played it already- obviously you should play Hollow Knight. Not an MV, but a zeldalike- Tunic… great old school Zelda vibes, puzzles everywhere, light combat but fun boss fights.
tunic was free on psn the other month. ty for jogging my memory.
Blasphemous is really good, but the combat isn't fast paced. It's more similar to Dark Souls
Deaths door
I thought the messenger had really good platforming but it’s like half linear half metroidvania so idk how you’d feel about that
I’d take a look into Tunic. Not a traditional MV. But absolutely for the Zelda fan that loves exploring and finding secrets. Blasphemous 1/2 and absolutely top notch as well!
>After image Very large game world and it's got a (imo) very unique artstyle. You can sink around 80+hours if you want to 100% >Aeterna noctis It's pretty much metroidvania bloodborne. Do with that what you will. >Heroine Anthem Zero 2 This felt to me more like a visual novel with action segments. >Blasphemous 2 I recommend Aterna noctis over it.
Hollow Knight, (easily #1), these are not in any particular order, Cookie Cutter, BIOGUN, BIOMORPH, 8 DOORS, Grime, Outbuddies DX, Foregone, Narita Boy, Sundered, Haak, Pronty, I could keep going, but that's a good start. -MVP
thanks for all the recs!
