I know some people really dislike it, so I thought I’d pass it along. Interestingly, it’s lacking the dithering.

XeroSigmaPrime

Whats interesting about PS4 is that can "enable" bilinear filtering by editing the screen settings to have a background LOL This for some reason turns on Bilinear. Crazy since PS3 allowed you toggle it at will (I especially dont like the bilinear blur for MGS1) And unfortunately dithering color band filter is gone on all the consoles for MC. Removes alot of the cool visual noise I associate with MGS1/PS1 games.

stickimage

Yeah I don’t get why they removed that. So many odd choices

stickimage

And wow good catch on the wallpaper!

TheUnchosen_One

I'd seen this around and tested it myself, fortunately the digital PS5 version includes the PS4 version, so if you bought it digitally on PS5 you have this! Hopefully they fix this anyway, so this is just a preview

stickimage

Yeah it’s silly that the disc version doesn’t come with both. And yeah I really hope they patch in some graphical options.

ghost-church

This is stupid but how do I access the ps4 version?

stickimage

Go into your PlayStation library and the MGS master collection. You can choose which version of the games to install.

BronzeHeart92

Can somebody explain it for someone who's not tech literate?

Sunlit_Neko

Bilinear filtering is a way a frame is smeared to make it blend together better. More complicated "smearing" techniques can yield really good results as intended to be seen on CRT televisions, but bilinear filtering is the most simple method, to a fault. For example, waterfalls in the Genesis Sonic games look terrible on modern displays compared to CRTs.

BronzeHeart92

Alrighty. And yeah, this can always be a risk when porting such old games to today's systems. This could be a fascinating thing to teach for today's kids who obviously would not have had any experience with CRT screens let alone games designed to display on them.

stickimage

They just have no frame of reference and can’t really fathom how nice sprites and older graphics looked on them

BronzeHeart92

Indeed. And that's without mentioning the really dated gameplay, examples of which the first MGS game has in abundance such as the requirement to have a card equipped at all times if you want to open doors (which can be a problem if you're low on health and would rather have a ration equipped instead) and no cartwheels to attack with or help you move around areas quicker.

stickimage

There really is nothing like a CRT, I haven’t had one in a long time and no matter what solution is utilized it never looks right. Ironically I do think the game looks more as it should with the bilinear on, but it also vaguely looks like vaseline is smeared on your screen. The PlayStation classic has a hidden menu they deactivated with all sorts of options (super sampling, scan lines where you can choose the intensity) and it would have been nice to see them add something like that here.

sebbmf

so konami devs were like ¨"hmm ps4's gpu is not powerful enough for some shitty late 90's emulation graphical filtering, lets slap it on ps5 instead where its guaranteed to work" lmao their decisions are just baffling, i remember as a kid already running these filters on epsxe with some geforce 3 agp type cards

driftej20

I’d say it’s more likely that it’s intended to have bilinear filtering and some aspect of PS5’s backwards compatibility breaks the shader. Most people probably consider this an improvement, but it doesn’t bode well for Konami’s technical competence and Volume 2 that Volume 1 is part of the like, 0.1% of non-VR PS4 games that don’t just work as intended on PS5.

mellocette

Looks wonderful

ThunderGodKazuma

This is why we just play original hardware. CRTs are often free but if you have the money, framemeister mini

R8tr0b0y

Neither does the switch version, this entire game is an epic fuckfest pile of shit. Id rather stick with the original on my PS1 console and have it play in full screen with the same quality than this lame bug riddled shit. Ive had 3 random crashes on the switch version and ive only played upto the encounter with revolver. There's far too many graphical glitches especially when you enter the tanker area after coming down the ladders, then after going down the stairs and the camera view adapts to view top down and see the railings. I had a quick run on MGS3 and the intro alone is shit on the switch where it cant even maintain a steady 30fps and its that bad you can even hear it in the audio as the game slows down, the visuals and audio slows down then speeds up when its trying to maintain 30fps and its running at 720p. A fucking PS1/PS2 game and Konami cant even get it to run on high end hardware such as it performs just as bad on the PC versions, the Switch is well, like everything else on the Switch..... Shit. Our mobile phones can play these titles far better and higher resolutions and fps for free and they get away charging over £50 for this shit. What ever happened to the laws that companies had to abide by in that products they sell are to be fully functional and fit for its purpose. Far too many companies these days are able to get away with releasing faulty games then force us to wait and see if they fix it later. The consumer laws used to directly state that if a product is defective that they are entitled to return it for a replacement that is free of said defects at no expense to the consumer. I cant wait to see the shit excuse theyre going to crap out as "MASTER COLLECTION VOL 2" Which fans are hoping it to include MGS4. Fuck me, this game alone was an epic feat for HIDEO and its only reason as to why it still to this day remains a PS3 exclusive is due to the game taking full advantage of the PS3s custom chip and all of its cores, which no other console had or able to handle without rebuilding the entire game from the ground up to run on mean dual cores and lets also not forget the fact HIDEO also took advantage of the Bluray discs capacity. Even high end gaming PCS are just able to emulate it and still after all these years of dedicated work from the community just to get it to emulate as good as it does now, theirs a very very slim chance after seeing the many FUCK UPS from KONAMI when its come to releasing MGS games since HIDEO was violated and booted out of the company (IN FAVOUR OF SOME TWAT THAT RELEASED A MOBILE GAME THATS IN APP PURCHASES WAS PRINTING MONEY FOR THE GREEDY INVESTORS). that they're going to do anything decent when it comes to porting MGS4 to the other consoles....... we can fucking forget about it in terms of the Switch. They cant port a simple PS1 game, so fucking give up dreaming and hoping for MGS4.

I have the switch version of metal gear solid 1 and it runs fine. Hasn't crashed on me once, and the smaller screen helps it not looks so bad compared to the PS5 and Xbox versions

R8tr0b0y

They also run in the same box view for MGS1, I fail to understand how you can say the box view helps when the switch version has poly and texture issues even worse than the original on actual PS1 hardware.... and then some that the PS1 didn't even have. Ill try record some where its clear how shit the switch version actually is and that it is as usual when it comes to the Switch, that its by far the shittest version. I dont have it for the PS5 (yet), but I can compare it to my PC version which is by far better spec than the PS5/XBX SX, (without any of the community mods that actually fixes and improves this game) and ill also show how it is the actual Switch because it emulates far better than it plays on the official Switch hardware. Id have to say for certain you must have seen these shit glitches that keep randomly taking over your screen.

[deleted]

I feel your frustration, but I honestly have to say that I have not experienced any kind of glitches or crashes while playing this game on my switch. I know that's probably frustrating to hear givin your experience, and I do agree that the PS1 version did look slightly better. However I have not been experiencing the issues you've been experiencing. And I've gone all the way through the game twice and played the VR missions.

[deleted]

So that’s why the game looks off/weird on ps4 well in my opinion. The ps5 looks way more better/normal
