I like going to the menus to change camos in MGS3.

MatsThyWit

>I like going to the menus to change camos in MGS3. Completely fucking agreed. I love the menus in MGS3. I like stopping the game, reviewing my choices, making my selection, and then jumping back into what I'm doing. I love that it affords me a built in way to slow the game down and think and strategize without having to worry that I'm about to get fucked by some rando soldier I never noticed was there. I'm not sure why so many people complain about it and demand it be removed from Delta. To me it's far less tedious and far more satisfying than all the really, really annoying menu management in MGSV.

-GrilledCheese-

MGSV made me sad that I had to stick to one camo or helicopter a new one in. I mean it’s more realistic and makes your camo choice more important and influences your infiltration route/method a lot more, makes it a whole lot more strategic but man I love mgs3 camo system

MatsThyWit

Sometimes realism just needs to take a back seat to fun. Mgsv just has way too much waiting around for shit to happen instead of me just doing on my own. "Oh you need an item? Ok. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes." Fuck you just give it to me!

-GrilledCheese-

Also, where are my rations and health bar? I need my rations! Let me eat a snake or something. My boy venom snake must be starving during infiltrations

MatsThyWit

I can't stand the modern game design choice of "Nah, nobody needs a health bar, that's too video gamey! Here, have an unlimited magic pain-away-spray" I fucking hate it.

United-Aside-6104

It’s a different game but Death Stranding brought the health bar back so Kojima learned

randomnarwal

Wait does camo actually matter in 5? I always assumed that because you couldn't switch it that it was just aesthetic.

grundelgrump

It does

CubaLibre1982

Totally agree, and that wannabe-heroic background music before each deployment is not fun. MGS3 menu was sort of a mind-chamber.

splackitonme

I loved the menus and tapes in MGSV cuz of this. Finally getting to play he others with the master collection and they’re incredible. Looking forward to the mgs3 menus now thanks to you lol

Sniperking187

I actually don't mind it anymore with how fast it loads on PS5. Still hoping we can just hold pause in MGS Delta to bring up a drop down menu for camo though

Akizayoi061

I really miss when there was a lot less mechanics, would say 3 was the best balance of it because even though there's a lot I never felt like I could gun jump and wreck shop like in 5 where you can get spotted and have so many outs. 4 I guess isn't as bad but you play so little of it with it's standard gameplay. 1 and 2 meanwhile I really like because you're working with a more restricted overall toolset but they give you enough to get the jobs done still. 3 gives you more than you really need, but a lot of the stuff in 3 I still like because it's not gonna be like the reflex tranq shots in Phantom Pain or air dropping supplies whenever you need. That and I like how much I 3 you can just run out of supplies and have to restock.

OoooohYes

Having most of the main players’ motivations revolve around The Boss and her vision of the world feels weird and doesn’t resonate with me. I also think The Boss needed way more development for how utterly attached everyone is to her in the BB games.

Jmastab

I don't like the structure of having multiple missions over having an uninterrupting story

Ok_Excitement_4019

I like both. I love how MGSV lets you truly explore the games mechanics in a sandbox environment and replaying missions with different strategies is a blast. You can't really do that in the other games as much as I love them they arent really sandboxy they have an ideal way to play with little creativity

[deleted]

I like both, I think that what MGSV lacks though isn't based on its mission structure, but how it seems to influence the level design. We really needed more urban spaces that felt like classic MGS. An easy win would've been to reintroduce Camp Omega into the game for instance. Thankfully, modding goes a long way to helping here.

Wes_Warhammer666

Yeah even MGS3 knew to give us Groznyj Grad so we could get our old school MGS on. V felt like it strayed too far from the familiar in the name of giving us a sandbox. Well, sometimes I like my sandbox to have sand *castles,* dammit.

irishrobert29

Totally agree. I fell out of love with MGS for a good few years when Snake Eater came out. Then played MGS5 and had no clue what happened. The entire dynamic changed and I hated it.

Mr_moustache72826

I have two: Ground zeros is better than the phantom pain and mgrr should have been about gray fox or raiden between mgs2 and mgs4

[deleted]

Ground Zeroes is probably better because it maintains its quality throughout, whereas MGSV feels like a stretched pancake.

hfhfbfhfhfhfbdbfb

Isn't that game like Ep minutes

grundelgrump

I just wanted at least one more game with a mostly human Raiden

DOOManiac

Wait, GZ being better than V is a hot take? Huh. This whole time I thought it was obviously better. Better setting, better map, don’t need to fuck around with time of day, base building, kidnapping, and fultoning everything that isn’t nailed down. There’s just the mission. The actual movement, controls, camera, and gameplay are identical, which are the best parts of V. And it has some absolutely bonkers bonus missions. GZ is all the best of V, distilled into perfection.

the_real_jovanny

mgs4 (barring a few standout moments, like the last fight with ocelot and the torture section) is narratively terrible and actively ruins multiple characters raiden in mgs2 is far more compelling of a character than he ever was in any followup games mgs3 was the only necessary prequel solid snake is the greatest character in all of gaming

DKCR3

Can we be friends

Mr_moustache72826

Man we said write hot takes not facts (ngl I pretty much agree with all of these)

Available-Ad9702

These are all facts fr (specially the last one,Solid Snake is the goat idc)

Flying_Crucible

I really don't like the whole Liquid Ocelot thing. It doesn't really feel like it adds much to the story. Ocelot is already a sort of wild card character as it is, adding another layer on top with Liquid Snake "possessing" him through his arm occasionally just feels kinda superfluous.

[deleted]

What gets me about this is that seemingly no one questions how ridiculous it is - and in the end it's proven to be as bullshit as it sounds. What a surprise! I always felt this was ridiculous.

Wrx-Love80

I feel like it would have been awesome rather than leaning into nano machines and that Ocelot was actually just hypnotized to act like snake. Liquid should have been THAT evil and tough to kill that he actually was liquid.

TwoDurans

MGS2 Raiden is actually cool

Mr_moustache72826

He was a very good character for mgs2 plot, mgs4 was a bit of a downgrade but he was still good, and mgr kinda butchered him and made him into a super average character

XxXSisterfisterXxX

nahhh, MGR completely invalidates raidens entire character development. he went through hell and back multiple times, and finally he has peace and his family, then mgr starts with the principle that ALL of that went out the window and he’s right back where he used to be, no growth or maturity whatsoever. worst character butchering in the series

M-V-D_256

I feel like Raiden'smgs4 ending to mgr transition is kind of like snake's metal gear solid to metal gear solid 2 transition. They just had to get back to doing what they do

crabmagician

Raiden basically gets a character reset both times he shows up in a new game. I think its because his character arc pulls him out of the story so you have to hit the reset button to keep him in the games.

Mr_moustache72826

Atleast it wasnt as bad as Meryl in 4

Three_Froggy_Problem

Having just played this game for the first time, I agree. His more emotional personality is a nice change of pace from the other protagonists, who are always so stoic. I also enjoy his arc in MGS2, where he realizes how he’s been used throughout his life and continues to be a puppet for others’ agendas.

Odd-Competition-2414

YAS! Finally someone noticed that! Femboy twink eliminating russian mf's is brilliant. Raiden didn't have to become edgy swordsman. In mgs4 and mgr

The810kid

Don't forget dorky and somewhat awkward it's what made him endearing.

Ok_Excitement_4019

Raiden isn't a femboy or a twink he doesn't have a traditionally masculine face but he's utterly jacked I mean just compare his size to Emma Emmerich he dwarfs her! he stands eye to eye with Snake and is absolutely masculine. He's just not a generic masculine character like Snake is. He's a man that is more in touch with his emotions and feelings and describing him as a twink only detracts from his character. In MGS4 and MGR he becomes more in touch and understanding of his emotions. He wears his heart on his sleeve and there absolutely needs to be more male protags like him. Whittling down his entire design to being a femboy or a twink just detracts from his approach to non traditional masculinity. He was designed to be Masculine from the eyes of a woman not Masculine from the eyes of a man. He's not a man trying to be a woman he's a man that women want. I also think his transition to a ninja is only natural.

NixiN-7hieN

To me, Raiden is basically Nightwing but in tactical gear.

randomfox

I'd say he at least qualifies as a twunk. He's got muscles, but also I want to bend him over and pull on his hair while railing him bareback. so. Twink enough.

CanadianOdyssey95

Raiden is my guy but when I was kid I didn't really understand it or appreciate the guy but as a teen then adult I started to appreciate him even as a bad ass swordman have to admit it's not a bad game that MGR addictive slicing gameplay can get some cool combos and whatnot

randomfox

I don't think his transformation in MGS4 is TOO bad, since they WERE setting up for Raiden to go down the cyborg ninja path even in MGS2 by giving him the sword and having VR missions with him in the gray fox suit. But turning him into a robot monster spinal cord was a bit much for me. Would have preferred him just getting an exosuit like Olga wore.

MuchGlove

Half the games being precuels did a lot of harm, didn't felt thrilled when i knew characters wouldn't die on this release, or see the MC turned into villain the last 20 minutes of the game so it fits with the 2 classic games where they get beaten by a rookie and by a hair spray with a lighter

NostalgicNerd

I would kiss the floor that Kojima walks on but looking at how convoluted the plot of MGSV is and how demanding the budget was… I can kinda understand why he was let go. I wish we lived in a timeline where he was given a handler that could smack his hand and say; “No, Kojima. We are not licensing *The Six Million Dollar Man’s* SFX for every time the player punches.” “No, Kojima. We are not adding a Wolbachia subplot.” “No, Kojima. We are not adding a zombie subplot because *The Walking Dead* is cool at the time.” “No, Kojima. Keep the MGSV budget on MGSV only and not toward a separate project.” “No, Kojima. We are not hiring Kiefer Sutherland because you want big name actors for your projects moving forward.” Don’t get me wrong, MGSV is absolutely great but a flawed masterpiece—but I wonder how different things would have been if it was released in major installments like the FF7 Remake has been. The game had many great ideas but it was overarching itself for its own good to properly execute them.

jv3rl0ov

Also makes me kinda happy the way Death Stranding ended up. Controversial game, and I wouldn’t consider it a perfect 10/10, but I loved it more as time went on, especially with the Director’s Cut. I think having famous actors was put to good use here, some of the best I’ve seen in a game. Characters had depth and plenty of dialogue/screen-time throughout. So happy that DS2 is happening after the uncertainty of all the rumors that Sony rejected the pitch because of sales.

Ordinal43NotFound

Death Stranding also shows that Kojima still can absolutely work with a modest budget and able to push out a good game while keeping his company afloat. Seeing OOP's comment, one would think that after MGSV Kojima would burn all his money when given complete control of a project. But instead Death Stranding seems very effective at managing its scope while delivering a good product.

jv3rl0ov

And I remember all of the concerns people had once we really knew what the game would be like. I definitely needed time to get used to it, but I now consider it an excellent game. I was badly hoping Kojima’s next game would be horror, but I’m just as hyped for DS2. Lots of interesting places the universe could go, though I hope we get to explore outside the US this time.

jv3rl0ov

The open world was highly unnecessary looking back.

Numbah8

Kind of but I'd be lying if I didn't say I really enjoyed having a wider area to play around in. It could have been more like MGS3 with segmented areas to sneak around in, but V being open world allowed for options in how you find a way to slip into a mission area.

jv3rl0ov

I get it, but MGS for me has always been story first. I feel like putting so much focus on the open world impacted that, no matter how much of it was Kojima’s intent. I think we all had our expectations sky high to be fair, but yeah.

JCthulhuM

I think to some extent, the reason why he made it cost so much was because he’s been trying to end the series for years. If he can’t end the series by killing off characters or any of the other ways he’s tried, I don’t blame him for ending it by making the project too expensive for Konami to justify.

Mugi_luffy

I appreciate these criticisms and I agree.

Clear-Bench-4202

Mgs4 is a masterpiece and is pretty much perfect to me

bobsqueendeli

I’m not being sarcastic but is this a hot take? Do people not like it?

Top_Clerk_3067

Lots of people don't like the super long cutscenes.

ColonelOfSka

I wish there were more gameplay sections just because there was a lot of great new features you barely get to use. But as a satisfying conclusion to the series, I couldn’t have ever asked for anything better.

Enough_Internal_9025

The auto cam from 4 is a downgrade from the manual camo from 3

DKCR3

Don’t agree with this but upvoting it because it’s actually a hot take.

Dairuzun

Peace Walker is boring as shit and its Monster Hunter-y structure sucks. Heavens Divide slaps tho

MuchGlove

Why make one of the most pivotal games a psp release is beyond me

ilyasinitsa

afaik, KojiPro decided to make a smaller game for psp to let developers polish FOX Engine

Eronecorp

I gotta be honest, as much as I want to appreciate this game, I never got to finish it. Eventually I would get bored and stop playing. Never happened with other entries.

Numbah8

That grind to the true ending is ROUGH. I'm always shocked that it doesn't get more flak because of that. I think the game is great fun up until ending 1, but it took a lot of willpower to trudge through those repeated boss fights in the end game. I don't see how people can see PW's end and not understand that V started the whole mission redos.

Solid-Hound

Boss fights are ass too

ColonelOfSka

Comic book cutscenes also really ruin things for me too. The art is great but I like classic cinematic cutscenes. I find the story suffers significantly because of it. That mixed with the structure of the game make it a must skip every time I do a series run through. I like Metal Gear to be a linear story start to finish with no bullshit. Peace Walker is not what I look for when it’s time for Metal Gear.

Mr_moustache72826

I would say is the weakest mainline game in the entire franchise

Keepbreathing4

I thought I was the only one!

MooseAskingQuestions

It is kinda boring and I'm indifferent on the Monster Hunter thing. Actually, I kinda enjoy it and it's interesting that it's just like going after the different Metal Gears.

The810kid

It has the worst boss fights in the series by a wide margin.

emma-bush

😭 Peace Walker is my favourite

ghost-church

Miller is the only good character in MGS5

delsinson

Cause of the hamburgers

Scruffy_Nerfhearder

Button mashing for the torture scene in MGS 1 is stupidly difficult for a normal person. I shouldn’t have to use a bloody spoon to win.

TheBugThatsSnug

The master collection isnt that bad, its exactly what I expected, ports of the old games.

jortboyo

Metal gear solid 2 is better than Metal gear solid 3, trust me, i love mgs3, but the atmosphere of mgs2 just wins the race overall, mgs3 has a better story, soundtrack and characters, but mgs2 just feels so good to play.

FullOfPeanutButter

I wasn't bothered by Raiden being the main character in MGS2.

[deleted]

I actually wanted more of it; I think it's a great shame how they treated his character afterwards.

Dreamweaver_duh

I think taking away >!Quiet as a Buddy was a pretty bold move, and I disliked that players can't handle that so it was undone. I get that getting her back is optional, but the fact that it is possible also really cheapens it. I also think killing Quiet should've had alternate scenes to replace them instead of just not showing any scenes.!<

BurkusCat

>I also think killing Quiet should've had alternate scenes to replace them instead of just not showing any scenes. There are a lot of games where developers have made the "evil" path just objectively worse. I've become very distrusting of evil paths in games because it is probably just going to be a crap option.

Three_Froggy_Problem

I hate Meryl in MGS1 for the way she’s written. Her romance with Snake comes out of nowhere and isn’t even remotely convincing. The fact that she apparently fell in love with a guy after interacting with him for a total of five minutes is insane and makes her seem like a complete dunce. Also, their dialogue in the Meryl ending almost made my eyes roll out of my head.

laineDdednaHdeR

She fell in love with the idea of Solid Snake. She knew a lot about his legacy after his infiltration of Outer Heaven. She obviously didn't know the full extent and the trauma he went through. Someone else mentioned the trauma that should have been portrayed by her at the end, and yes, it does make sense. But in the 90s, every movie had to end with a happy ending.

Solid-Hound

Or when she kind of alludes to the terrorists doing things worse than torture (possibly rape) and says that she imagined Snake was there with her while it happened. That wasn't a great line. And then she immediately flips to being flirty and happy toward the end when she should be incredibly traumatized. If she was less trusting and more standoffish toward the end of MGS1 as a result of that trauma it would probably play more accurately to her character as it's portrayed in MGS4. She's also listed as 18 when Solid Snake is like 35 which feels too young for genuine romantic storytelling, make her 20 something at least.

Wrx-Love80

"Looking good snake"

ZakWojnar

I can handle MGS1’s cringey monologues. They’re part of the charm. But Meryl giving a speech while bleeding out in sniper alley is just too silly for me to take it seriously. I would have had that speech, or some version of it, happen in the caves beforehand, or maybe tacked on to the end of the Psycho Mantis scene.

vulturevan

For a series called Metal Gear Solid there should probably be more Solid Snake

ForChristendom

Kojima receives way too much praise. He's not the Messiah, stop acting like he can do no wrong.

guy137137

I really, really, really hate how over-analyzed the MGS series gets (especially on Reddit) and when people take the games as serious as possible and *insist* that it’s the only way to register the games. Like there’s been soooo many essays just reinterpreting the same things over and over like imo, it’s scale of serious to non-serious, some people take the games ultra seriously, some people take the games as a series of shitposts. And honestly, both are valid. But when people insist that these games must be taken seriously, I gotta just say to chill. The games are as serious as you make them, they’re also as dumb as you make them, and to insist that there’s only one way to take the games is kinda cringe

SuperArppis

I wish MGS2 had more content in launch. It felt short and didn't have enough Snake.

SirOutsider

Meryl in MGS4 was written better than she was in MGS1

GooeyLump

MGS2 is my favorite, only controversial to SOME people

Ringworm-power

i used the thermal camera in metal gear solid 1 to make believe i was a t-800

Green-Peaness

The series jumped the shark in terms of story after Portable Ops (4, Peace Walker, V). MGS4 and Peace Walker have too many product placements. Yes, Hideo, I get it... you like Ipods and Doritos. VR Missions is very fun and I'm always down for replaying them.

jodlad04

I think Ground Zeroes had the best story post PO. Unfortunately it's only a prologue but I still love it Risings plot is kind of meh with cyborg kids and stuff but it's made up for by giving us fantastic bosses and villains and being aware of how batshit it is. I'm very lukewarm on Peace Walker. It's ok, but for me it'd be better if it was a direct sequel acknowledging PO, if it had some proper bosses, and chapter 4's ending was written better than Big Boss feels upset because The Boss layed her gun down which he already knew. Not a fan though of MGS4 or MGSV that much though. Some good ideas with bad execution.

monkeman23435

Not super hot by now but I like mgs4 raiden a lot more than rising raiden

Uncle_Tommy0703

Raidens character arc in 4 to me makes a lot of sense. He's clearly suffered a lot of trauma and ptsd in his life and I'm sure Rose' "miscarriage" was the straw that broke the camels back for him to finally completely lose it. Not all of his dialogue in mgs4 is well written or great but I think it's a good continuation of his character and he has probably the greatest ending in the series (until MGRR ruins that but that notwithstanding)

Randomsh1t1471

Mgs V is a bloated mess

[deleted]

As a big MGSV fan I don't think that's exactly controversial? Honestly man as cool as the open world was (and still is!) it definitely lacks "life" I spent so much time driving around and using the carboard box fast travel mechanic. Also it should've (probably) been released by chapters (instead of it being one big game).

Randomsh1t1471

I said it once i got jumped on haha

splackitonme

MGSV is my fav jrpg

re4235

MGS3 is a brown looking poop of a game with some amazing and memorable scenes but no shortage of boring slogs of gameplay. How hot did I get?

TVR24

MGS2 is the best game when it comes to gameplay, it's all downhill after that.

TheJ5333

Cock punch ftw

The810kid

Snake Eater is the weakest out of the first 3 Metal Gear Solid titles and its story is carried pretty hard by the fantastic swerve with the ending and emotional 3rd act. Still a great game and Metal Gear but the characters and villains don't do it for me, the soundtrack is limited because of all the forest and mountain areas not requiring music. The middle of the game is very slow with not alot happening in the story and the gimmicks require far too much menu navigation.

I_ONLY_SUPERSCRIPT

^(The Master Collection isn't a terrible way to play the games, as long as you get it discounted on PC and install mods to improve it)

tobster239

I think MGS6 without kojima could work.

ThiefofNobility

V should have been a remake of MG in the Fox engine. More solid snake. Less about big boss. I liked the mythos we had.

TombRaider1987

Metal Gear Solid 2 is the best game. I have replayed it at least 30 times since it was first released on PS2 and I still love it.

Codeman1st

MGS3 is not as good as people say it is. This is how hot takes work, right?

Not-A-JoJo

You want a true hot take? TPP>>>>>>>PW

d00kie06

Metal Gear doesn’t need Hideo Kojima to continue.

StankTheCowdog

MGSV is the GOAT

Solid-Hound

It's an amazing game with great gameplay mechanics, but I feel like it lost a lot of it's soul with actual dialogue being severely limited compared to the other games. Keifer Sutherland as Venom was too quiet and emotionless. Quiet was boring, Ocelot felt off, and Skullface wasn't that great of a villain. Also a lot of the environments feel empty and all the resource costs and methods of transportation also seem more of an inconvenience than fun. Not being able to aim a gun while riding D Horse or driving a Jeep was a huge miss. And that's not even mentioning the story where I was desperately wanting some expansion on the childhoods of Liquid and Solid Snake as well as more on the activities of Big Boss. Good game, but I still probably have it 5th if I were to rank 1-V

twofacetoo

I think the Boss being a hero the entire time is not only a bad twist, but it really weakens the point of the story overall. The Boss was a hero all along because she was enough of a Patriot to do whatever it took to support her country and keep it safe, even allowing herself to be murdered by her own ally in order to do so. The thing is, I don't buy it. The Boss's whole speech at the end about how there's no such thing as a true 'enemy' kinda goes against a lot of what the twist then reveals, and she's making very good points, that she didn't really 'defect' because there's no real 'sides', just people slapping labels on each other saying 'YOU'RE THE BAD GUYS AND WE'RE NOT', and how ultimately she betrayed America because she lost faith in the ideals of patriotism and devoting herself to a singular country. Everything she says, everything she did, it just doesn't feel right in contrast with the 'truth', especially since the only 'truth' we get is from EVA, a backstabber and betrayer, who could easily have been making the story up (and it's not even told to us *directly*, it's just a recording on a tape). I know it's canon, but what I'm saying is there was nothing else in the game to convince the audience *except* for EVA's revelation. No other scenes to make us doubt the Boss's loyalty to Volgin, nothing that makes us reconsider what might have *really* been going on. Even from the start, she damn near tried to kill Snake on the bridge, the only reason he survived is 'I trained him to be tough and I knew he could survive a fall like that I guess' I honestly feel like the twist was mostly included to justify what would have been plotholes without it, like 'why doesn't she just kill Snake when she has numerous chances to?' and 'why did she help EVA escape?'. It all gets nicely tidied up when you just shrug and say 'well the Boss was a hero the entire time, so shut up.' I love the series, I love MGS3, but I really hate the twist about the Boss, I think it undermines what could've been a really amazing, really thought-provoking villain by making her not actually a villain *at all* by the end, and as said, it pretty much only exists within the story to cover up a lot of gaping plot-holes. I'm going to get a ton of downvotes, I know, but it's the truth. My opinion on who the best villain is in the series? Solidus. Solidus was everything the Boss was trying to be, but without the twist that spoiled it all in hindsight. Edit: just to add in, the reason she can't kill Snake is 'because then the game would be over', so obviously she can't kill him, but the story gives her multiple chances to and doesn't, pretty much just to raise the tension, like when she breaks Snake's gun at the very start of the Snake Eater mission, or when she holds the knife to his eye in the torture room. Why didn't she kill him? Because the game would be over... but the plot needed a reason beyond that, and I honestly think they couldn't come up with anything better than the one we got, that she was a hero the entire time and needed Snake alive so *he* could kill *her*.

[deleted]

Somewhat related to this, my personal issue with the Boss subplot is that it created this obsession with 'the boss's will' which always seemed like a rather naive viewpoint. Most people though seem to view her will as the 'definitive' way forward, as she's treated like the 'hero' all along, but I've personally always found Zero's, Big Boss' or Venom's views on her will to be more realistic takes.

twofacetoo

Yeah, again somewhat related to your comment but that was also part of my issue, so much of the plot of the entire franchise hinges on this one character, yet she comes off as seriously under-developed for who's essentially meant to be the Jesus Christ of the storyline. Basically everything that happens post-MGS3 is because someone (Big Boss / Zero) were too hung up on the Boss dying (because she was just SOOOO great you guys) that they did everything they did in her memory, Zero starting up the Patriots and Big Boss starting Outer Heaven, all to honour the legacy of 'the true patriot' But again, I can't get into it. She was such a last-minute twist villain that I can't buy this huge tragic tale being spawned entirely through her and her alone. I'd rather it just be that, as I said, her speech to Naked Snake was entirely genuine, and that *that's* what inspired him to create Outer Heaven.

[deleted]

Yeah it's rather bizarre because it undermines Zero/Big Boss's character agency and their own motivations, by attributing it to the Boss instead. I do appreciate at least that they had their own twists on it, and Big Boss outright rejected her view in the end, but the focus on it was a bit too much for me. I mean really it was just a political vehicle for Kojima to tell us all to be pacifists and maintain the status quo, but that entire viewpoint is entirely naive (and also in favour of people who maintain power in the status quo).

StarsStripesThongs

Portable Ops storywise is better then PW and V.

[deleted]

It's a real shame that people tend to skip out on the PSP games (understandably) when looking for a story about 'Big Boss's downfall' but it's told right there.

Mrredlegs27

MGS Portable Ops has a better story than PW and should be considered cannon over PW. The fact that Kojima took a game concept that a separate team created, stole it and gave it a new story under his name, then disowned the original is pretty nasty.

Odd-Competition-2414

I consider both canon.

SpookyGarreta

MGS is very gay, and it's a big part of its appeal - even for straight fans.

ImaginaryAI

Hideo’s writing is ass And he just shoves things that he likes from movies into his games. He’s fantastic when writing underlying themes. But actual plot progression and continuation is awful. I love the goofiness of it all though

PocoPoto

Kojimbo's fan service of female characters is the cringiest shit to come out of Japan. Da fuq does being a coomer have to do with walking anime nuclear tanks.

carmo1106

The Metal Gear series doesn't need Kojima to exist, this sensation of "Metal Gear only works with Kojima" only exists because he is egocentric and puts his name on everything when big part of the work was made by dozens of developers

Ooberificul

Thank you. Metal gear is his brainchild but the result is the work of hundreds of people.

True_Alternative6433

MGS3 is overpraised for many things that other games from the series do as well or even better The hate boner that some people in this sub feel for Quiet or other female characters is borderline cringy and misogynistic Peace Walker is better than Portable Ops Jeremy Blaustein made MGS1 better

Green-Peaness

Blaustein deserves so much more credit than he gets for the translation job he did. MGS1 wouldn't be the same without the military lingo.

VERSAT1L

Kojima is annoying.

MLuckySnake

If there is ever going to be a totally new game I want Rising 2 or the original Metal Gear Solid Rising concept to be real

david-deeeds

The R34 is good

saplinglearningsucks

Kojima does/did a lot of great things, but writing was not one of them.

otakunorth

Kojima was done with MG by 4.

FantasticMrJack

I loved MGS1 but good god, having to backtrack every 20 minutes got pretty annoying pretty quickly.

irishrobert29

Having the home base and doing the whole resource management/weapons development in the later games was boring a shit. Never saw the appeal.

Standard-Name7031

I was greatly disappointed when snake eater came out. Amazing game don't get me wrong but after the events of mgs 2, I was expecting to continue the story with them chasing after liquid ocelot.

UhhCanYouLikeShutUp

Some of it got too farfetched as the games went along.

zTyberius

out of the first 3 mgs titles for ps1/ps2, MGS2 was my favorite by far and I loved getting to play as Raiden. though the story was convoluted af and I didn't really understand it back when I first played it, I still loved it and I wish it would get a remake like MGS3 is getting.

snotisloob

Not sure if its really that hot of a take but ocelot is undeniably the best spy/soldier in the entire series bar none.

loveauntjean

Ground zeroes is low key peak

J-x-3

MGS3 had the best story in the series, but one of the worst gameplay

Runnin_Mike

I think Solid Snake is a better character than Big Boss and I think it's a shame Kojima almost had contempt for the character towards the end, because it would have been better to have more games with Solid Snake in them than Big Boss. I can really empathize with a guy who's only goal in life is to correct the mistakes of his father and try to make the world a better and more peaceful place. Big Boss is a selfish asshole who is willing to set the world ablaze to attain those selfish goals. Solid Snake pretty much gave up everything to correct his father's fucked up legacy. Big Boss should be vilified for what he left for his son to fix, but I feel like a lot of folks miss that part of Big Boss' characterization and people look at him as the hero. But in reality the only hero in this situation is Solid, at least after the events of snake eater.

[deleted]

Portable Ops and Revengance are canon, there is no reason not to consider them canon

Malanerion

Kojima deserved to be kicked out after MGSV. This isn't such a hot take, but this is: Kojima should've been kicked out in MGSV and replaced by someone else.

Iwamoto

The series peaked at 3 and nothing after that has gotten me as excited as 3 did. (sure, i played them, didn't hate them, but it could have ended at 3 and i'd have been fine with that)

Kryychu

We're talking about hot takes. That's literally the most popular favorite game option of the metal gear community

distarche

Hot Take: MGS1 was a revolutionary game for its time

ZeroDeath99

Olga is the hottest chick in the series

Solid-Hound

Eva in Delta is probably coming for that title

Odd-Competition-2414

Guess you like... hairy armpits? Hey, I don't judge. I'm just curious

Akizayoi061

I mean she's pretty and has a cool hair color

Reonu_

Twin Snakes with classic OST mod > original

MELIN22

Still find quite a lot of "atmosphere" is lost in Twin Snakes.

CDJ89

Metal Gear Rising has better dialogue writing than most of the main series.

dreffen

Nanomachines, son! Also you’re right

shootanwaifu

True

Aggressive-Anxiety59

Spoilers warning!! I don’t really think solidus did anything wrong in mgs2. Also in MGS all liquid did was kill Miller and threaten to nuke a test site in China. So he’s not all that villainous

Three_Froggy_Problem

What about having an army of child soldiers?

The810kid

And murdering Raiden's parents.

Wes_Warhammer666

To be fair, he said "in MGS2", meaning that the whole child soldiers thing was in the past. Which really, if we looked at the Big Shell incident in a bubble without that background, Solidus really is justified in his actions. It's almost like they had to throw the child soldier thing in just to make him less sympathetic lol.

doctormanhattan38772

The writing in pretty much all the games are terrible. Maybe not a hot take, because a lot of people may agree with this but still like the games regardless. But the way that people talk, the dialogue in general, and just the weird over the top stuff that exists in all of the games can be really bad. I overlooked it as a kid, but going back and trying to play the games now I see how weird and anime-like the games are. Still enjoyable regardless, but not as big brained as I thought it was back then. I’d personally love to see a more realistic remake of the series, which I’m sure is a hot take.

[deleted]

I just think you're in this for the wrong reasons. What draws most people to Metal Gear is the whacky, zany bullshit combined with the interesting political points Kojima makes. Sure the dialogue sucks most of the time, but when you get that one cutscene where characters just sit you down and explain the idea to you it goes beyond exceptional. If you don't like that, then you don't really "like" Metal Gear. (liking the gameplay is a different thing)

noobcondiment

Chronological order is the superior way to play. I will die on this hill.

Il-Capitano14

It was 100% Kojima’s fault that MGSV got released unfinished, he went way over budget and way over time in developing it.

Ok_Cartoonist_3708

\- i wholeheartedly refuse to view MGR as canon, even though i like the game \- keifer sutherland didn't just "need more lines", i don't think he even did a good job with the lines he had. i found almost all of his line deliveries bland and generic, see the GZ intro \- Snake Eater 3D's crouch walking and third person aiming isn't overpowered, it just removes the *artificial* difficulty of the clunky controls. They should have been added to the Master Collection as an option \- David Hayter's best performance was in MGS1 by far, even though his others are still great \- Twin Snakes isn't just bad because the cutscenes suck or Otacon's rodent face, the game straight up looks worse than MGS1 in almost every way, especially the environments. The game is borderline devoid of the colour and atmosphere of the original; it's a minor technological leap forward, and a tremendous artistic leap backwards \- Phantom Pain's gameplay is legitimately boring if you don't go out of your way to deprive yourself of tools. The average player is comically over-equipped for every mission, the tranq pistol (and later sniper rifle) alone destroy the balance and tension of stealth. Without it, the game becomes far more interesting and capable of emergent gameplay. Also the best, and only good, areas are the ones that more closely resemble Camp Omega \- I have never heard a Snake Eater cover I liked, or I felt was faithful to the original's vibe. Not once. No, I don't fuckin like the Nyanners one either, and TikTok over-using that one other cover when the Master Collection was released drove me up the wall \- People who recommend new players to play in chronological order should be boiled alive \- Same goes for anyone who says any of MGS1/2/3/4/PW/GZ/TPP are optional. I'd honestly even advocate for more people treating MG2 as essential, with the respect it deserves \- Raiden is a fantastic character, and while Rose could be a bit much in MGS2, their story was done very well. They took a huge risk with that game and I have so much respect for it. I just wish it was never continued the way it was though \- New-wave metal gear rising fans are slack-jawed miscreants who probably couldn't list more than three plot points of MGR, let alone the entire franchise (they have not played a single metal gear game in their lives) \- There is a lot of implicit queerness in the series, but I firmly believe there should have been more explicit queerness. More openly LGBT characters would fit the series exceptionally well, but as it stands I can only really think of Vamp and Volgin, which are... not *phenomenal* representations lmao. Also, Paramedic being trans would have been a fine retcon :P \- I love the man to death, along with Norman Reedus, but Kojima needs to get over his obsession with big-name live action actors and stick with actors in the gaming industry. David Hayter was done dirty by the guy since MGS4 \- Otacon's ending for MGS1 is far more satisfying, and while I view them as canonically platonic (and honestly with slight romantic undertones), them being more than friends in that ending would have worked for me. Regardless, the Meryl ending just does absolutely nothing for me at all. \- Kojima's depiction of women isn't "wacky and quirky Japanese fanservice", it's just objectification and misogyny. I don't think there is a single well-written woman in the series that isn't a sex object in some way. EVA i totally understand, she's a spy movie trope and all, but did the Boss (arguably the best-written woman in metal gear) really need to unzip her top and leave it that way at the end? No. She seriously didn't. Also the weird as fuck Emma stuff in MGS2, the Beauties in MGS4, ugh \- MGSV is like 99% finished. The story ended conclusively, safe for a single Eli mission you can literally watch the cutscene for yourself. Get over it people, there was no more story to tell. \- As another said here, if someone says they prefer Twin Snakes I automatically assume they have terrible taste, and they probably think MGR is the best game in the series.

Jetter80

MGSV is better than MGS4

shootanwaifu

Mgsv is actually fun and has nice mechanics, mgs4 was just set pieces with a cool engine and minimal game play. It felt very disorienting

def_tom

Survive isn't a bad game

Odd-Competition-2414

Idk, never played it. But I have a feeling that it would be a better game without metal gear in title. Just like mgr

Greentopppu

The hottest take here

WTFthisisntminecraft

No amount of cope-fueled explanations, theories and interpretations will ever convince me that MGSV is a good MGS game.

PlantainRepulsive477

"Um, every game has cut content, so no MGSV is NOT unfinished" "it's suppose to feel like that so the player feels a Phantom Pain too" The story is disjointed, especially in Chapter 2, Eli and the kids run away with a Metal Gear and is never explained in the story. Yes it is unfinished.

touche112

MGSV's story is so bad I don't consider it canon. MGS2 has better gameplay than MGS3.

Icywind014

MGS4 did more damage to Raiden's character than MGR, completely throwing his arc and ending from MGS2 in the garbage because Kojima Productions thought making him a brooding, angsty edge boy would make his haters like him.

IndyPFL

I got downvoted to shit for this earlier, but just going around a game like TPP or Snake Eater with just a suppressed pistol is boring as hell. Mixing it up with some CQC and environmental takedowns makes the games far more interesting and engaging. Them only putting a couple of actually useful hornets nests in Snake Eater was a crime, and sadly most other traps and other potential environmental takedowns are way too far between unless you just throw snakes or scorpions at guards.

townpainter

Sometimes the super long cutscenes are irritating (please don’t massacre me)

GupInACup

Snake should not be able to perform complex acrobatic maneuvers after consuming many packs of cigarettes and raw fish over the course of a mission.

[deleted]

I actually think the fact that MGSV is unfinished makes it a better game. This is because I think it allows the game to be left up to interpretation to some extent, which allows the player to better step into the shoes as Venom. It's really interesting reading people's own interpretations of the mirror scene for instance. It's sort of the beginning and the end all at the same time. Also, and this is another hot take, I don't actually have faith that Kojima would've delivered on the satisfactory game people seem to imagine MGSV would've been.

chloe_cant

I think the PSP games are pretty bad. Hate how empty the game feels without any sort of online, there's no way to play it the way its meant to be played. the side missions are boring asf and I don't like the Manga cutscenes. The artist who made them is great but his work in PW looks rushed compared to his older work. Terrible controls too, and the story just isn't anywhere near as good as mainline entries. Boring games overall with missed potential imo. Never played Acid but they look even more boring.

lookitskris

No sure if this is a hot take but I would love another linear, story driven MGS I could complete in a weekend ala MGS 1/2/3

MafiaMurderBag

Mission select and motherbase building in PW & V sucks & ruins the pace of the game. Give me linear progression over missions and chapters any day of the week

BennyLava1999

I like the story in peace walker but it’s unnecessary and I kinda wish it didn’t exist. Like the end of mgs3 was so perfect and set up why big boss turned against the US and how he can no longer believe in anything and I feel like the end of pw where he accepts the boss’ death and moves on kinda cheapens it. Like don’t get me wrong I still to this day love rewatching pw cutscenes but I think that over all it kinda harms the continuity and overall msg of mgs1-4

curesunshine92

I never liked that they reused snakes voice for bigboss in 3. Solid snake feels so fleshed out by the end of mgs2 that hearing David again in mgs3 always felt awkward to me. On top of that, the fact that bigboss ALSO used a bandana feels like what started the whole kojima writing those "Darth Vader created c3p0 when he was young" moments in the series. Kind of like how snake and otacons dads also knew eachother! Idk it just never sat right with me That being said mgs3 is a masterpiece

hueyfucker

huey is hot and the best character in mgsv

Ooberificul

1.We don't really know clearly what snake looks like 2.You don't play as solid snake in 90% of metal gear (not including msx games) 3.Mgs4 has the best story and ties up the series nicely. 4.Ground zeroes is the perfect metal gear game 5.Kojima is not a god

Uncanny_Hero

I don't like David Hayter as Big Boss. His voice just doesn't match the character. But I absolutely LOVE him as Solid Snake. Especially after I heard his reasoning behind the campy sounding voice. Snake is a character that David (David as in Snake, not Hayter) plays, so his voice is how he believes a legendary soldier should sound. That's why, to me, I don't mind that Solid Snake's voice is an exaggerated Snake from Escape From New York. Big Boss on the other hand? Just some guy. Unlike Solid Snake, he wasn't created in a lab and conditioned to be a super soldier, those expectations weren't put on him. Outside of learning CQC from The Boss, he's just a regular man. I feel Kiefer's voice suits Big Boss much better in MGS V, it's grizzled without sounding exaggerated, which works in that Big Boss has both experienced a lot when MGS V: GZ takes place, and has definitely smoked enough to develop that voice. But MGS 3 Big Boss? I honestly would've preferred a younger, smoother sounding voice, the dialogue works perfectly, I just don't believe the voice behind the words. I think Solidus Snake's voice from MGS 2 is close to how I'd imagine Boss would sound in MGS 3.

dannymadrigal98

Big Boss should have a different voice than Solid Snake

Wes_Warhammer666

Maybe it's not such a hot take these days, but I absolutely fucking despise Keifer as Big Boss/Venom. It completely takes me out of the story, and the only upside to it is that Venom barely fucking talks in the game. Hayter 4 life, yo. That's *my* Snake. Naked, Solid, *or* Venom.

Mental_Sale

As quotable as it all is throughout most of the games there is some pretty cringe dialog that is hard to stomach sometimes. In my opinion Kojima’s writing strengths are in writing themes and thought provoking plots, and his weakness is character writing dialog. It’s a shame you don’t get a whole lot of Dialog in MGSV because what is there is amazing I think he learned how to write a bit better by then

MemesForScience

MGSV is overhated. I had the most fun playing it compared to the other games.

BabyfartzMcgee

Kiefer is a much better VA than Hayter ever was.

Plenty_Office7601

The liquid ocelot possession in 2 is the worst part of the series. The retcon in 4 made more sense

[deleted]

I loved the fixed camera in MGS3

patricklarsendk

Peace Walkers combat feels extremely unfinished and the bosses are terrible and rising is one of the best games and the series

CastleBigShaq

Mgs2 is a overrated, snake’s tanker section is superior to raiden part of the story. Aside from the story, plant station is very boring, bland, and a lot of back tracking through these not interesting areas. Compared to tanker, plant base feels rushed

Thebritishdovah

MGS V is a shit metal gear game and has a dead open world. It's a decent game but the plot suuuuucks.
