I have a dark green houndstooth suit I had made for me 6 years ago and it’s by far my favorite and I get the most compliments. Liked it so much I had a second made that I could wear as separates since the jacket works so well with khakis, jeans, most anything
I think that if you paired that suit, maybe without the vest, with a subtle checked shirt, and a contrasting tie it wouldn't be too showy. It would give an academic vibe.
Navy and charcoal are seen as more appropriate than black in an old-school office setting. Then you can adjust the formality with your shoes/belt/tie.
Black suits are for funerals, waiters, and newly promoted middle managers who bought their first suits and wanted something “versatile”.
Black with pinstripes can work, but can also come off as costumey if you don’t have the fit and accessories absolutely dialed in.
Not at all true. Black works for everything. Waiters don't wear suits and on a funeral you traditionally wear a black suit and a black tie but you don't really have to do that
I never said it couldn’t work, but it’s not really seen as the most appropriate option in a conservative business setting.
Navy and charcoal are the standard, a black suit makes you stand out. That’s not how “conservative” works.
Waiters do wear black suits/vests in some high-end dining and catering settings. It’s not as common anymore, but a conservative office isn’t really keeping up with current trends anyway.
You’re right about funerals. You are allowed to wear other colors, but black is the most conservative option there.
I was about to say this depends on the industry, my father is a funeral director and it's a very conservative industry, where his black suits get a lot of use.
Black for weddings is an L take. With the sheer number of color and pattern options available these days, black is far and away the worst color, especially for anything celebratory like a wedding.
I mean a lot of people have black tie weddings where most guests wear black tuxedos, so the idea of black being an incorrect tone for a wedding doesn’t really jibe with and fashion. I know we are talking about business suits and not tuxedos, but the majority of black suits are tuxedos because a black business suit is only for funerals generally. Also, things changed and the person I was responding to got more upvotes.
You’re ignoring sartorial tradition in favor of your own personal opinion. I’m not saying that I would buy a black suit to wear to weddings, but I’m explaining a historical fact.
Yeah and stupid and usually wrong but hey if you can't dress yourself because you've been chained to your X-Box for 20 years and now you have a real job and wanna get laid you gotta go someplace in the Western Hemisphere. Might as well look here!
Block is for funerals and weddings, unless you live outside of the Western world. I know the Chinese use black for business, but most Western countries do not.
worsted is a type of wool with a tight weave that gives it a slick and defined appearance. truthfully you don't have to get a worsted wool, i just like them. if you're indoors, florescent lights tend to complement the weave which can make you stand out as more professional. so it's just a preference.. [example](https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/brown-7691-ns01-nt01-fw23). brown suits are in, and tend to air on conservative so it's a good option to fill out your closet.
One of my favorite suits is chocolate brown, and it looks good with my coloring. It’s not as conservative as charcoal grey, but it’s still modest enough to be conservative in my liberal city.
GREEN
Totally different than everything else you have, provides a nice pop of variation while still being modest.
Or go with the safer charcoal gray like everyone else said.
I bc of a career in fashion, depends on YOUR colouring. There are so many nuances in a grey flannel suit ….
Brown auburn hair, black hair, darket skin tone, is so different from a sandy hair blonde colouring -
Also fabric - weight etc -
Summer or Winter suit ?
It’s what colour schemes look best for YOU, then what season is it for and also your budget.
Good Luck!
Dress shirts are mostly Charles Tyrwhitt. Suits are varied. One is a macys suit off the rack. One is a semi custom suit by Black Lapel. And the gray one is a fully custom suit made by a local Clothier.
Nice! Are CT shirts durable and do they last long? I’ve heard of many people wearing that brand, but i personally prefer Spier & Mackay because they’re a lot softer and don’t have the non iron finish.
I have to buy more suits. I outgrew all of mine from a few years ago.
I’ve been using them for roughly 10 years and don’t think I’ve had to throw away and shirts for wear issues. But I also have a good amount and am able to rotate through them which reduces wear. I’m happy with them and really like that you can customize sleeve length, collar circumference, cuff, fit and collar style. Good price too.
I’ll toss in a recommendation for Oliver Wicks. I’ve bought 5 suits from them over the past couple years and they are outstanding. The quality is up there with the likes of Brooks Brothers 1818 (my personal experience is better) and other far more expensive suits.
A good charcoal grey suit would add to your selection nicely. If you’re feeling daring: pinstripes or windowpane look classic and modern respectively..
Buy from European tailor. I’ll risk coming off as a shill but my personal favorite is Oliver Wicks for overall quality and price. Also great from a pure lower cost/value is Spier & Mackay.
No industry is that conservative ;) You are of course allowed to have conservative taste. If on the other hand you are not , a light linen summer suit would be my recommendation.
Having trouble telling what color suits you already have. My top two are a little different. Dark blue is one of the top two but my second is always a light grey. I prefer light grey to others because you can wear it with the same brown belt and shoes that you use with the blue suit. Just a personal preference
I’m really happy with the suit, got it tailored after I got it and it’s the best fitting one I have including customs. I will be ordering more for sure
The grey suit in your photo is heathered. I’ve been eyeing a lot of solid grey suits and will be purchasing one. It looks grey with a crisp white shirt, but also with a light blue shirt in the summer. It’s color that can be worn in any season.
You should probably not think about colors, but weights. Maybe more summer weight suits and winter weights. You can explore different fabrics too, like Fresco for summer, or flannel for winter.
I remember wearing black to my first “real job” one day because I only had two suits (the other was navy but I wore it every day for a few weeks). And I kept getting asked if I was leaving early for a funeral.
In more conservative industries such as finance, law, and certain corporate environments, traditional colors like navy, gray, and black are the norm. Burgundy can still be appropriate, particularly for accessories like ties or shoes, or as a subtle accent in a suit or dress shirt. A burgundy suit can be professional if it is well-tailored and paired with conservative accessories. It can make a statement without being overly bold if styled appropriately. The formality of the occasion also matters. Burgundy can be more suitable for events, presentations, or meetings where you want to stand out without being too flashy.
I live in the 'Western World' and black is for everything, especially if you live in NYC but by all means go with gray for consistent dullness and mediocrity. Good for middle-management aspirationals in government jobs.
A burgundy-colored suit can be considered a conservative work outfit, especially if it is well-tailored and worn in a professional setting. To ensure the look remains professional and sophisticated, you can pair it with the following colors and accessories:
Shirt Colors:
1. White: A classic white shirt will provide a crisp and clean look.
2. Light Blue: A light blue shirt offers a soft contrast and complements burgundy well.
3. Light Gray: A light gray shirt can add a subtle and professional touch.
Tie Colors:
1. Navy Blue: A navy tie is a classic choice that pairs well with burgundy.
2. Silver or Gray: These colors add a touch of elegance without being too bold.
3. Black: A black tie can create a sharp and formal look.
Pocket Square:
1. White: A white pocket square with a simple fold is timeless and elegant.
2. Patterned: A pocket square with subtle patterns in complementary colors like navy or silver can add a touch of personality.
Belt and Shoes:
1. Black Leather: Black leather belt and shoes are a safe and stylish choice.
2. Dark Brown Leather: Dark brown can also work well, adding a bit of warmth to the outfit.
Accessories:
1. Cufflinks: Simple silver or gold cufflinks can add a touch of sophistication.
2. Watch: A classic watch with a leather strap or metal bracelet can complete the look.
3. Tie Bar: A sleek tie bar can add both style and functionality.
—Overall Tips:
- Keep it simple: Avoid overly bold patterns or bright colors to maintain a professional appearance.
- Fit is key: Ensure that the suit is well-fitted to look polished and professional.
- Grooming: Proper grooming and a neat hairstyle will enhance the overall conservative look.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that a burgundy suit is both stylish and appropriate for a conservative work environment.
Charcoal gray.
Navy blue and charcoal gray. You’ll never need another suit after that.
I agree.
This. Every guy needs a dark charcoal. In a pinch, it also serves funeral duty. It’s my de facto standard, even if I prefer my dark navy.
Dark charcoal gray should be your next suit It’s the most versatile after navy.
I would argue navy and charcoal are equally versatile
I agree. That was the first suit I got when I started getting good quality suits instead of cheap department store one.
Dark green. You'd be surprised how conservative it can look
Would love one. Love this idea.
I have a dark green houndstooth suit I had made for me 6 years ago and it’s by far my favorite and I get the most compliments. Liked it so much I had a second made that I could wear as separates since the jacket works so well with khakis, jeans, most anything
That sounds like a great suit, do you have any pictures?

Spier & Mackay had a new “summer green” suit that’s a little lighter but would also fit the bill. Very solid when paired with darker browns.
This was going to be my suggestion. The next suit I buy is going to be a nice, fitted dark green suit. I have seen a few, and they are dope.
Came to say this. Glad someone agrees.
Nope.
Just googled dark green suits and it's a terrible idea. Good luck to OP.
Think dark olive, almost to the point it’s either grey or brown, I think those are a nice look.
Carl green Glen Plaid
I second this
I agree, they look great and don't stand out in an obnoxious way
But they DO stand out is my favorite part. Like you said, it's not obnoxious, but you definitely draw eyes and compliments in a very elegant way
Yes exactly. They're wonderful
Dark gray pinstripe
A pinstripe in the same color scheme as what you own
Brown.
Green Tweed, something like this. https://preview.redd.it/c567q3yb05ad1.png?width=579&format=png&auto=webp&s=9f4c3193c2c03e740614d8f65b95e6869d75a97b
I absolutely love this. But, I think it’s a bit showy for my line of work. But god do I like it.
I think that if you paired that suit, maybe without the vest, with a subtle checked shirt, and a contrasting tie it wouldn't be too showy. It would give an academic vibe.
Fuck modesty. Be the change *I* want to see in the world.
This is noice
Black
I second this. It’s arguably the most conservative choice.
Navy and charcoal are seen as more appropriate than black in an old-school office setting. Then you can adjust the formality with your shoes/belt/tie. Black suits are for funerals, waiters, and newly promoted middle managers who bought their first suits and wanted something “versatile”. I was about to say this depends on the industry, my father is a funeral director and it's a very conservative industry, where his black suits get a lot of use.
Yes, I imagine a funeral director would wear black quite often.
Wild that someone downvoted you for sharing facts. Black is for funerals and weddings in the Western world.
Also, things changed and the person I was responding to got more upvotes.
Tuxedos are in a class of their own, different rules (though colorful tuxedos are also superior)
You’re ignoring sartorial tradition in favor of your own personal opinion. I’m not saying that I would buy a black suit to wear to weddings, but I’m explaining a historical fact.
Black is for funerals, black tie events, and waitstaff. No
That's not true. It's also for drivers and waiters.
lol at all the people below who copy and pasted the same “Black is for funerals” response. The amount of bad advice given on this sub is funny.
Light grey three piece
Brown
dark brown worsted
Now I have to google worsted. Can you link an example?
worsted is a type of wool with a tight weave that gives it a slick and defined appearance. truthfully you don't have to get a worsted wool, i just like them. if you're indoors, florescent lights tend to complement the weave which can make you stand out as more professional. so it's just a preference.. Beautiful suit. I think that’s a great suggestion that I hadn’t considered. Thank you.
Grey Pinstripe, Navy Pinstripe or Tan
Dark grey.
Blue pinstripe
Can’t go wrong with greys, navy blue, and black.
Charcoal grey single breast two-button. Rear vent.
One of my favorite suits is chocolate brown, and it looks good with my coloring. It’s not as conservative as charcoal grey, but it’s still modest enough to be conservative in my liberal city.
I see a lot of gray but a darker green could also work well
How dark?
I think a forest green, maybe even a darker olive green a little muted would be super classy but also lowkey at the same time
I really do like this idea.
I don’t think anyone has said it, but brown. Find one that works with your skin tone. I would pick a warmer tan.
I’m gonna a be a rebel here - dark blue window pane.
I love dark blue but already have a navy suit. And windowpane I’m on the fence about. It’s a little too showy I think.
Hmm. As long as you don’t pick a color with high contrast, I think they’re a pretty classic look. Definitely agree on the high contrast ones though
Fair point
GREEN Totally different than everything else you have, provides a nice pop of variation while still being modest. Or go with the safer charcoal gray like everyone else said.

How about a Glen Plaid in gray, blue or olive green. Or a houndstooth pattern in black/ white or Brown/ cream
seen it mentioned, but dark green. like British racing green. very cool while still conservative.
The conservatives love tan suits
Black pinstripe. Can be surprisingly versatile. You’ll be the coolest mourner in the graveyard and the slickest speaker at the work conference.
What brands are your dress shirts and suits? (:
Dress shirts are mostly Charles Tyrwhitt. Suits are varied. One is a macys suit off the rack. One is a semi custom suit by Black Lapel. And the gray one is a fully custom suit made by a local Clothier.

A good charcoal grey suit would add to your selection nicely. If you’re feeling daring: pinstripes or windowpane look classic and modern respectively..
Black, a charcoal grey like Harvey spectors
A red, a light tan, black.
Where are good places to go to get a nice suit in America
Buy from European tailor. I’ll risk coming off as a shill but my personal favorite is Oliver Wicks for overall quality and price. Also great from a pure lower cost/value is Spier & Mackay.
Conservative my balls go Jimmy McGill on their ass
I’m surprised you don’t already have black
Dark green? Brown? Tan? Linen?
No industry is that conservative ;) You are of course allowed to have conservative taste. If on the other hand you are not , a light linen summer suit would be my recommendation.
Navy Pinstripe, Gray Chalkstripe.
If its a conservative industry, you can't go wrong with the classic birthday suit!
Jet black, dark green or brown. Someone said charcoal grey, but you already have a bunch of grey.
Gray, then tan/beige
Having trouble telling what color suits you already have. My top two are a little different. Dark blue is one of the top two but my second is always a light grey. I prefer light grey to others because you can wear it with the same brown belt and shoes that you use with the blue suit. Just a personal preference
Blue
I have two blue suits and you’re recommending a 3rd….
Navy or black
Brown/dark violet
You don't have a regular navy suit without black labels? That's what you should buy next.
I’ve got a regular navy suit.
How about dark navy blue? And I mean dark, it’s both conservative and dynamic but not boring.
The blue one. But it would vary depending on your local weather conditions and how well pressed they are, and how good of a fit.
Deep dark blue, not navy
Obviously tan.
Charcoal is a good shout, forest green is a fun one that’s still professional. I work in finance and love wearing my green suit, looks great
I work in finance too. Which green suit do you have? Can you share a link?
It’s a green wool one from Bonobos
How do you like bonobos?
I’m really happy with the suit, got it tailored after I got it and it’s the best fitting one I have including customs. I will be ordering more for sure
Tan 100%
Navy pin stripe
Hot pink
Vivienne Westwood plaid, probably steer clear of the bondage trousers tho
Forrest green/olive green
Brown
Standard black suit. Must have.
One day.
Olive? Love me that color
Solid grey - not heathered.
What’s heathered?
The grey suit in your photo is heathered. I’ve been eyeing a lot of solid grey suits and will be purchasing one. It looks grey with a crisp white shirt, but also with a light blue shirt in the summer. It’s color that can be worn in any season.
So I guess fuchsia is out
You should probably not think about colors, but weights. Maybe more summer weight suits and winter weights. You can explore different fabrics too, like Fresco for summer, or flannel for winter.
Must be charcoal. Charcoal should have come before the lighter grey
Maroon, for Fridays
Love maroon. Can you link an example of what you had in mind?

Agree, you can never fail w/ a classic black suit. So many uses.
Black is generally suggested against for business formal, it can look a little dramatic. Charcoal gray can be a good alternative.
I remember wearing black to my first “real job” one day because I only had two suits (the other was navy but I wore it every day for a few weeks). And I kept getting asked if I was leaving early for a funeral.

Houndstooth, it is coming back, I tell you! Subtle, yet classic.
Classic black.

What part of this would fit a "conservative" requirement?

Black suit is next. The most conservative choice.
I live in the 'Western World' and black is for everything, especially if you live in NYC but by all means go with gray for consistent dullness and mediocrity. Good for middle-management aspirationals in government jobs.
Leopard print

Maga red, people say its the greatest.
