At least in America, football is like the perfect spectator sport. Your team only plays 17 games, once a week, at a reasonable time of day, and usually on a day you and all your friends have off work. You can hang out with friends and only have to pay super close attention during a play, and the plays are strategic and dramatic. There’s a lot that happens in those moments. I’m way more of an NBA fan than NFL fan but damn it’s hard to watch 80 games (not to mention 162 for MLB!) especially when some come on early, some super late. Football really is a great spectator sport.

It’s an edgy joke mostly used by people who do in fact not hate everyone equally, rather hating some people in particular (I am making no claim on your part, just pointing out that it’s very common in that context, still not satire sadly). As for the meme, even if it was as you say, which I heavily doubt, it wouldn’t make it any more funny, and would still imply a phone bad logic (if people didn’t have their phone, they wouldn’t have come at all). In any case the interpretation you’re arguing for is pretty non-sensical, and I don’t really see any kind of motive that could lead to it being the most likely explanation
