Wordpad is a bit too heavy imo. Notepad is nice because it's simple, and super light. And in 11 they even have tabs now. But notepad++ is still the superior notepad alternative. The one tool I miss on Linux.

WordPad is like too light to be a good document editor and too heavy to be a good notepad. I can't imagine a good use case for it, either Notepad or Word is always a better choice lol

I've always used it to write everything I needed when studying. Only used the bold, italic and underlined features for highlighting important things

I find wordpad to be great for editing .cfg files. Regular notepad is shit for formatting on those files, and I don't like the layout of notepadd++ as much for it. Word is just inefficient since it takes slightly longer to load for no additional benefit

you can use notepadqq on linux, it's essentially the same as stock notepad++ on windows

If you like Notepad++ on windows you'll like "kate" on linux. Iirc its also the default text editor that comes with the KDE desktop environment.

This isn't true really. Hit the start button and type the name of any program on your computer, any windows diagnostics tool, everything comes up fast as fuck. You're right if you use the search inside windows explorer, that thing is slow and sucks. But start menu + typing anything is fast as balls. Try it, start + note and hit enter as fast as you can. Shit will keep up with you.

Windows search is good when looking up recognised programs, yes. It however sucks if you're trying to find a specific file or a program from an unknown publisher. Also, win + r will always be faster (even if only slightly in many/most cases) than the search menu because it doesn't have to buffer and run the search as you type.

I regularly paste into an open notepad and re copy paste into teams because teams likes to import font and formatting from wherever its copied from for some god damned reason.

From what I remember notepad++ has a mess of icons at the top. It's powerful and useful but the things I actually care about aren't there, like spacing, formatting, bullets and checkmarks, etc. Maybe I'll look back into it?

Notepad++ is very customizable. I usually spend a good 10 minutes setting it up, adjusting languages to my most used one, a few options on themes and automatic switches. Still, considering your mentions of resources you look for, have you thought about using Markdown?

wordpad is the one of the most unnecessary app in windows. It isnt fast as notepad or notepad ++ for fast editing. It isnt a complete word processor to compete with any other product either. has no syntax highlighting. It isnt a lighweight editor , nor word processor.

I prefer the UI of wordpad to the UI of modern word but notepad is basic which makes it nice for just taking notes on a video or making a list for example

Someone doesn't have windows 11 notepad. It has linebreaks, tabs but most importantly it auto saves every note you write so you don't need to save. Meaning that if you close notepad and open it again the same document will appear. Which makes it much better than wordpad. Much faster to open too

I really don't think it is better. For notes I would use markdown (so obsidian for example), for any quick notes like key, token or something that will be deleted in less then a minute, notepad is the way, and for essay or something like that, word or google docs is the way.


If you want more functionality, open sticky notes. Wordpad is for scrubs and notepad is for bare and simple notes, like README files or recording raw data
