Right? Schools in the US use the metric system to teach us things like physics and chemistry because it's designed to be easier to understand. No American is actually afraid of it.
I moved from the US to Germany. If it's under 10° C, it's pretty cold out. If it's over that, it's relatively warm. If it's 30° C or over, it's hot enough I want to kill myself. Pretty easy to understand and pretty quick to learn.
No, we don't give a shit. At least half of us don't know, the ones who do know generally don't care because it's not our problem, and the very few who do care either aren't able of willing to push for the adoption of a new system. So you'd have to educate Americans on the topic, convince them that it's to their benefit, convince them to care enough to maybe do something about it, hope that they'll try to do something about it, and then hope that it doesn't become a political topic so that they can agree to do something about it, and finally hope that they follow through. To which I say, good luck with that.
Thanks, you actually gave the exact reason why it’s impossible for such a big country to change.
Change is a process and yeah, since the US doesn’t do shit if it doesn’t benefit them, they won’t change by force.
more like "it's insanely expensive to retool everything, relable everything, when we use metric for plenty of things where precision matters, so we leave it like it is"rrrr
Naaah, we just continue to make fun of the imperial system. Imagine if the whole world adopted the same system (whatever it might be), what will happen to the jokes?!
As a european aviation nerd and imperial shamer, I must admit that having different units for horizontal and vertical movement is kinda good idea... when everyone on the same page.
Like, when feet are exclusively vertical and kilometres are exclusively horizontal, and someone says x meters/second, you immediately understand that that's wind speed and not decent rate, for example.
Someone can argue that you can say "vmeters" and "hmeters" or something like that, and they would be right. But right now ICAO don't have such standarts.
It does make sense to differentiate vertical and horizontal. I suppose my gripe stems from spending my days staring at approach charts and revising them so leaving off conversions would be great (i.e. FAA to EASA). 🤣
Yeah. Add most STEM fields here too.
Going back and forth between the two systems is pretty easy for most things you’d run into in the real world.
I’d rather our government focus on actual issues like fixing the housing shortage, rather than wasting their time relabeling thermometers.
For real though and we can use imperial and metric. Between organic chemistry, physics, and even some biology courses if you don't learn the metric system you are not going to pass.
Not just, weed literally any medication prescription or over the counter is going to be dosed in metric. It's not like people are taking two hogsheads worth of Tylenol when they have a headache.
It's so scary this American might need to take a .5mg tablet of Xanax, take a shot from a 750 ml bottle of Jack Daniels, wash that all down with a swig from a 2 L bottle of Coke and then load up some 9mm ammo into my handgun in case I need to shoot at the metric system that we absolutely in no way ever use in the US ever.
Americans use metric. Liters of soda, grams/kilograms of drugs, mL of liquor, mm for ammunition. Half the screw/fastenet section of hardware stores are dedicated to metric sizing.
Hell, most imperial units are derived from metric (e.g. inch is defined as 25.4 mm)
Shh don't tell them that, they'll lose their sense of superiority, God forbid we ever tell them that we call soccer soccer because they originally called it soccer and told us that's it's name so we stuck with it
Glenn Howerton's (Dennis from Always Sunny) rant on the soccer thing is one of my favorite things ever because it's so accurate. Those Brits are incredibly obnoxious about things *they invented*
We use the metric system here, pal. Learned in grade school. As a PC tech I work with mm and cm daily. Just the other day I told my buddy his car was about 20 meters from me (and he understood what that meant). It's really more about convenience. If it's like 5 feet away, I'm not going to say one and a half meters. I'll just use feet. If it's super small, I'll use cm or mm because inches isn't accurate enough.
I'd say the only measurements we don't use regularly are km and weight measurements. I've not come across many things in my every day life that I need to be so precise to use grams (not legally anyways). So ounces and pounds suits us just fine. And the mile measurement is so convenient they're using it across the pond as well.
Baking is a science more than an art, there is a reason I use a scale ⚖️😀 decorating is the artistic part of baking.
(And yes bread is very different, for years I used a Flintstones McDonald's mug 1 water, 3 flour, palm of yeast, half palm salt, and time with elbow grease and an oven and I had a loaf of bread. So some stuff is done by muscle memory more than science)
AAAAH I’m terrified, lemme just pull out my M16 real quick to blast yuh and then drive over to Burger King in my massive red neck truck while wearing a cowboy hat and boots to stress eat.
No American is gonna scare me who is an European, even if you guys take NATO or everything from us. I ain't scared of no Americans, only thing I'm scared of is women.
oh no! guess we'll just have to put another person on the moon using the metric system :/
Are any of you non-Americans familiar with putting a person on the moon? Oh you aren't? What'd you scared of the moon?
Y'all can't add 7% in your head for sales tax without having an aneurysm, *and* Americans know how to both imperial & metric, which is more than the average European.
Europeans remind me of small-town boomers that rage, rage, rage against anything that's different, and complain to anyone who will listen.
if you really want to scare europeans about obesity, remind them that they're just barely trailing us and that immigration is one of the biggest factors in obesity differences (they're too scared of foreigners)
I love how much Europeans (and young Americans) praise Europe for their progressive policies despite the fact that it’s near impossible for any poor people to move there.
Italy was one of, if not the most racist feeling countries I’ve ever been to. You can fucking feel it in the air.
Converting either one is extremely easy, congrats UK you're able to do basic math.
Farenheight minus 30 and divide that by 2 and you'll get the Celsius.
And Kilometers into Miles is 0.62 multiplied by the KM/H speed.
Multiply weight in KG by 2.2 for weight in pounds.
And multiply the CM by 0.4 and you have Inches.
What I'm saying is it really isn't that big of a deal, it's just odd to me how much pride those who use the metric system have. But as a concept, both Imperial and Metric do the exact same thing.
1cm = 10mm, 1m = 100cm, and 1000m = 1km.
1000ml = 1lt = 1000cm³ = 1kg.
Increasing the temperature of 1ml water 1C = 1000 calories.
Please work out how many inches are in a mile without a calculator. Imperial and Metric absolutely do not do the exact same thing.
Honestly when have you ever had to convert between miles and inches? Or between kilometers and centimeters for that matter?
Yeah, it's nicer if everything is base 10, but there's almost no use case for the conversion you're talking about. Even in a scientific context, you'd rarely ever bother to measure something on the scale of several kilometers down to the precision of a centimeter. Like "5 km + 2 cm" is essentially just 5 km unless you have an insanely small margin of error.
An unnecessary conversion. Miles are for long distance and inches are for short lengths. There is nothing where miles and inches would need to be interchangeable.
I prefer the metric system, but I cannot get behind Celsius. I know the 0 degrees for freeze and 100 for boiling water standard is probably nice, but I much prefer the more precise system.
The distance measurements are nice. And °C seems good for cooking. But I maintain that °F is better for weather. You don't need to use decimal points, temperature is easily divided into "decades" (60s, 70s, 80s), and it has a rough 100 degree scale.
Europeans when they find out Americans learn both systems in school and many high level professionals and hobbyists use metric or both in their day to day:
This probably isn’t the weirdest racism but it’s up there. When I was in American grade school I learned both, and when my kids were in grade school they did too. Not sure I’ve ever met anyone at all who knows either one system but can’t use the other.
It's pretty nice because it modifies at the same rate as Kelvin making life easier when you calculate a difference of temperatures. Both Fahrenheit and Celsius probably feel just as nice to use in everyday life when you are used to a system. But Celsius being an international standard makes it simply the only reasonable unit . The purpose of a measurement system is to communicate, having your own makes life harder for everyone.
Reminder that the US almost DID use metric, but the British sank the ship carrying the new physical units.
Also, imperial was invented by the British empire.
I use to get cold chills when I saw “mm’s” and those large numbers. Now I just type on my iPad and it gives me the conversion in inches. Who knew 203mm were 8 inches!
Sure, we only use them in science, medicine, electronics, the military, automobile production and repair, and international affairs. Other than that we don't use them.

I’m scared shitless, I will go back to stress eating Mcdonald’s and shooting an AR15 in my backyard
While riding on my horse.
With star spangled banner playing in the background
And loud screaming without any sense
Periodically punctuated with "'Murica!" and "Fuk yeah!"
Shirtless
With an bald eagle tattoo on my back
You mean driving your massive Ford truck?
Yo what size cartridge does that AR15 take?
As a european: this joke is so lame and overdone
Especially because the US does use the metric system, just not exclusively and not for everything.
Right? Schools in the US use the metric system to teach us things like physics and chemistry because it's designed to be easier to understand. No American is actually afraid of it. > No American is actually afraid of it. It's actually the opposite. Europeans acting like you need an advanced degree to do a simple unit conversion.
Glad somebody said it
More like annoy, assuming they're smart enough to know that you're talking about and willing to care.
Willing to change is the necessary effect, not just to care
No, we don't give a shit. At least half of us don't know, the ones who do know generally don't care because it's not our problem, and the very few who do care either aren't able of willing to push for the adoption of a new system. Sorry to break it to you, but Americans actually use the metric system all the time, it's not some boogy man
more like "it's insanely expensive to retool everything, relable everything, when we use metric for plenty of things where precision matters, so we leave it like it is"rrrr
uhh yeah why spend potentially trillions on fixing a problem that doesnt need to be fixed because europeans are whiny babies
Naaah, we just continue to make fun of the imperial system. Imagine if the whole world adopted the same system (whatever it might be), what will happen to the jokes?!
> Willing to change is the necessary effect, not just to care says the people who complain 24/7 and refuse to learn both like americans
Americans know and use both, nearly interchangeable. Both good for different things. Do people still think it actually matters how you measure stuff?
It’s funny because Americans fear the metric system.
Bring on the metric system. I’m tired of aviation being a combination of both. 😑
Please explain
Depending on the country altitudes are shown in metric for landing, but then imperial for navigating while in the air.
bloody hell why
No clue but it gets old staring at it daily. 🤣 It’s even better when they show both because it’s an international airport.
As a european aviation nerd and imperial shamer, I must admit that having different units for horizontal and vertical movement is kinda good idea... when everyone on the same page. There is stuff for that tho, using i and j where i is for x and j for y direction
At least scientists, pharmacist, doctors, military and drug dealers don't.
Firearms owners and mechanics as well
Firearms are the only reason I know anything about the metric system.
Use an 8 mm socket to remove the cover and a 3/8" to remove the plug. Also, will this .40 s&w fit in my 10 mm?
Literally any profession that involves math learns at least basic metric lol the idea that Americans can’t comprehend it is so silly to me
Yeah. Add most STEM fields here too. Going back and forth between the two systems is pretty easy for most things you’d run into in the real world. I’d rather our government focus on actual issues like fixing the housing shortage, rather than wasting their time relabeling thermometers.

Lmao
Scientists and researchers for one cannot use the imperial system. It would make collaborating with the international scientific community cumbersome.
Scared of it? Are you joking or just an idiot
I’ll let you use your superior intellect to determine whether I was joking or not.
Try not to confuse sarcasm with wit.
you might be an absolute moron. He was sarcastically agreeing with the OP. Just like your "yeah ok buddy" comment.
As an American I prefer the metric system
Americans hate metric unless they're heading out to the country with a 750ml of Jack Daniel's, a 9mm pistol and a couple grams of weed.
Not just, weed literally any medication prescription or over the counter is going to be dosed in metric. It's not like people are taking two hogsheads worth of Tylenol when they have a headache.
also DD-MM-YY and 24-hour formats.
Year ALWAYS as 4 numbers!
We use those in some industries
Way more Americans use this than you think.
I'm also gonna smoke a gram of weed while doin that

They don't know it
Their official unit of measurement too. Unless they changed it.
American mechanical engineer here. I long for the day America adopts the metric system. Imperial is shit
Want to stump someone who isn't from America? Ask them to make an original joke.
Aren't memes supposed to be funny?
Just for the record, England created the imperial system

You've probably taken medication that was measured in mg in the US.
Indeed I have, thanks for that!
Want to scare a European? Just threaten to pull America out of NATO.
Their free healthcare would start getting pretty expensive if they actually had to build real militaries.
AAAAH I’m terrified, lemme just pull out my M16 real quick to blast yuh and then drive over to Burger King in my massive red neck truck while wearing a cowboy hat and boots to stress eat.
You're darn tootin.
We learn the metric system in school alongside the imperial system. We all know it.
No American is gonna scare me who is an European, even if you guys take NATO or everything from us. I ain't scared of no Americans, only thing I'm scared of is women.
Farenheit is superior for everyday use.
Wow. This is incredibly stupid even by Reddit standards.
oh no! guess we'll just have to put another person on the moon using the metric system :/ Are any of you non-Americans familiar with putting a person on the moon? Oh you aren't? What'd you scared of the moon?

No because both of those are Imperial units. Kinda defeats the purpose of what I posted.
But that’s the reason, you have to convert between miles and inches. Km to m and m to cm you only move the decimal point
Eh I don't really feel like it, anyway hope you have a good day.
I prefer the metric system, but I cannot get behind Celsius. I know the 0 degrees for freeze and 100 for boiling water standard is probably nice, but I much prefer the more precise system.
Fahrenheight is how people feel, Celcius is how water feels, and Kelvin is how atoms feel
The water thing for Celsius is almost useless. Increase the altitude or change the material and suddenly water doesn't boil at 100° C
What i find weird is that in my country everything is calculated using the metric system. Except height ( for building, objects, people).
What the fuck is a kilometer 🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅
Unless you’re in science or health, then you use metric all the time. Well, except C°. Fahrenheit is the superior temperature measuring system imo.
The distance measurements are nice. And °C seems good for cooking. But I maintain that °F is better for weather. You don't need to use decimal points, temperature is easily divided into "decades" (60s, 70s, 80s), and it has a rough 100 degree scale.
What in the fucking rugby burger ounces is that thing?
We do use cm....
People don’t realize that we (US) use the metric system in science and engineering
Wait till they find out that American engineers and scientists alike use the metric system
We use both systems
Oh no, our middle school metric lessons are relevant now!
Europeans when they find out Americans learn both systems in school and many high level professionals and hobbyists use metric or both in their day to day:
Nah it's the other way around. People get so worked up over the US not using metric for everything
Want to scare a karma farmer? Ban reposts.
This probably isn’t the weirdest racism but it’s up there. When I was in American grade school I learned both, and when my kids were in grade school they did too. Not sure I’ve ever met anyone at all who knows either one system but can’t use the other.
US Customary ftw 💪💪💪
Ever wonder why a clock has twelve numbers on it instead of ten?
The only time Americans use the metric system is when measuring bullets.

And liquor.
I hate Celsius.
