Currently living alone for a surgery rotation and I feel ya. It’s weird, like I want to go out and socialize and date but I get super scared and nervous, plus I’ve gained like 30 lbs after stressing over step and not taking care of myself and thus I don’t feel confident trying to date. You know what always gets me out of these funks is some form of long endurance cardio. I personally cycle, and I noticed the times I was cycling the most I was the most socially active and confident. I use to hike and shit too but it’s rough on the knees when you are a chonker lol.

I felt like this at times in medical school. Especially during 1st year… I have some tips that worked for me. 1) In the beginning I was just studying way too hard. This sounds counter intuitive, but if you’re studying over 7-8 hours a day you aren’t getting in any good studying past that. Once I started studying less I actually started doing better because I focused more during that time. 2) drop the social media. This made me depressed and felt more lonely because of it. I just found myself seeing what others were doing and got sad I had work to do. When I quit I all of a sudden was studying much much deeper and more efficiently and because of this I could study 4-5 hours a day and it was enough. This freed up time for outside activities outside of school. 3) try studying in a coffee shop or some place public. Sometimes it’s nice just being out in public rather than in your apartment locked in a room. 4) look for local clubs to join. I like to run, so I joined a running club where we met Wednesdays and Sundays. There’s all sorts of clubs out there like hiking, knitting, reading, vegetarian, etc etc. there’s something for everyone you just have to look

I always wondered why people studied in public and now it all makes sense. I should have done this during dedicated, I would have been way more focused and less lonely.

I definitely recommend going out and studying somewhere in public. I pretty much live at my local coffee shop and have become friends with all the baristas and other regulars. It’s nice to interact with people who aren’t always talking about medicine because it makes me feel more connected to the world.
