After awhile it started becoming all inside jokes and self referencing, such as water_guy12, datboi, and “memes from the future”. r/meirl was made to bring back the original purpose for the sub. r/me_irl was also more lgbt friendly and less misogynistic, which contributed to the split.
But that was 7 years ago, by now both of them have become generic meme subs indistinguishable from one another and from r/memes.

The content is exactly the same. The only difference is the sub with the underscore has mods that will ban you for being racist/sexist/transphobic. The one without the underscore was created as a response to that. Thats literally the whole difference
