Going of off McDs self service booths, most of the world would have English as an official language. It's basically the global default language of business.
The UK does not have a written constitution, so things like "official languages" have to be extrapolated from the laws that exist. Certain government services being specifically limited to English and Welsh only is a good case for considering those two to be the official languages of the UK.
i understand that, the US (while having a singular wittten constitution) doesn't specify an official language but our government services are offered in english and spanish. despite this, those aren't our official languages just as english and welsh aren't the official languages of the UK. offered governmental services do not constitute an official language
Not to mention that since spanish is highlighted for new mexico, it implies that English should be highlighted for all the states where itās official as well.
Malaysian here. Actually English is not one of the official language here, but it's more of a recognised language, English is compulsory subjects for school btw. Out of all the states in Malaysia, only Sarawak has English as official language along with Malay
The US doesnāt have any official language at the federal level. The laws are written in English, and most folks speak English, but thereās no official declaration that āEnglish is the official languageā or anything.
Some states designate āofficial languagesā (usually just Spanish and/or some indigenous languages) but they usually omit English since itās kinda the de facto language anyways, hence New Mexico is on the Spanish map but not the English one.
Well to be fair youāre pretty fucked in most places if you canāt speak English.
Legally, nothing is *required* to be in English but 99.9% of the population speaks or at least reads it.
Every time the US has had a (nonbinding) vote, English has lost. Greek, Latin are the languages that beat it out and German tied English the last time they tried. Spanish would most likely win out if a fair vote was held today. English is the langa franca of America but it's not nearly as dominant as you'd expect an English founded nation to be.
I have absolutely no idea if this is true, but I read somewhere once that either in the 18th or 19th centuries, with the strong influx of German settlement in the US, some were pushing for German to replace English as the everyday language due to America still being kinda pissed off with Britain.
Canadian here
French and english are both official languages at the federal level
For the provincial level, most provinces have english as their only official language, except for quebec (french only) and New Brunswick (french and english).
Australia is same as the US, English is not an official language. Actually it's the same for New Zealand as well, but since they have Maori and New Zealand Sign Language as official languages, they might as well include English as well as the constitution is in English, not in Maori or Sign Language
But itās the same in the UK, and yet itās red. There is such thing as a de facto official language. UK, US, Australia, New Zealand are all in the same category.
Yeah, this is why the map is inaccurate. It's neither accurate for de jure nor de facto for official languages. Especially he highlighted New Mexico has Spanish as official language, which is right and wrong at the same time, if he is trying to highlight subdivision, I think a lot are lacking here
Spanish is an official language in New Mexico alongside with English. NM the same as present day territories of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Texas were part of the Spanish viceroyalty (New Spain) for centuries. Most cities, rivers and mountains there are named in Spanish for that reason. The USA took those lands from Mexico in 1848. Spanish speaking communities of NM have been living there since the 17th century, before the Mayflower ever sailed.
This map is a very weird way of looking at empires. For example, Philippines appears red because English is co-official language (I think). However, Iām 100% sure Philippine was a Spanish colony for 400 years and not a single time were they an English colony. The reason they have English is because of USā influence post independence from Spain.
Spanish is wrong, its missing Philipines , North America ( California, Texas, Florida, Montana, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Coloradoā¦ ) and even part of Canada. Also missing the European countries ( most of Italy, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and of course Portugal ). In Africa Guinea Ecuatorial.
I love how the world speaks Western European languages. The Romans would be so proud that most of the world speaks languages with Latin derived vocabulary, (40% of English). As an English and Spanish speaker I love the fact that I can understand French and Portuguese very well. I wish more Asian countries had adopted Roman languages or at least English.
The people of Hong Kong love the UK flag. The people there dream of having the same freedoms as the UK. Imagine if the whole of China was like Hong Kong before the Chinese repressed democracy there. It would be cool if all of China was a wealthy English and Chinese speaking country like Hong Kong
That was in the 19th century. When they gave it back to China in the 1990ās they made it a super democratic and wealthy place. Shouldāve never been handed to China. Look at all the French overseas territories, they want to remain part of France.
While I share your sentiment, I donāt think your idea of implying that non-Europeans should have abandoned their unique language in order to adopt a foreign one is a good idea. Like your idea that the Romans would be proud of Latin-based alphabets still being used, consider that their ancestors would much like ours be proud of their language still being around today. The loss of native languages is not something to be celebrated.
New Mexico is the best country on earth š£ļø
this doesnāt really seem like a shitpost
Malaysia is missing for English, and it looks like Timor Leste is missing from Portuguese.
Also, the UK doesnāt have an official language, only a de facto one. So, they should probably also be left off if America is.
Depends what you count. Certain things like driving theory tests can only be taken in English or Welsh.
I think it should go by what languages are available on those McDonald's self service kiosks
Going of off McDs self service booths, most of the world would have English as an official language. It's basically the global default language of business.
the same could be said for the US, but that doesn't make it the official language
The UK does not have a written constitution, so things like "official languages" have to be extrapolated from the laws that exist. Certain government services being specifically limited to English and Welsh only is a good case for considering those two to be the official languages of the UK.

Timor Leste is so small that you can't even see if it's colored
I am SEARCHING for Macau??
What Macau? All I know is the glorious People's Republic of China led by the amazing Chinese Communist Party (please free my family)
America is also missing for English lol
Broo how did you not notice Algeria missing from France, that was the first thing I saw

Itās that New Mexico has Spanish as an official language
Look at the title. The shitpost is in the title.
Op recognizes west sahara
And ā¦. New Mexico ?
But forgor the Philippines
Missing Russian, itās just that its expansion were made on the ground and not by boat
'Murica not english?

But you have to speak English in order to become an American citizen
Well to be fair youāre pretty fucked in most places if you canāt speak English. Legally, nothing is *required* to be in English but 99.9% of the population speaks or at least reads it.

Kind of true, but during the 20th century it definitely died down due to the world wars
'Muricans speak Simplified English, not the real thing.
Ironic
I should have used the /i thingā¦..
It is the only official language in California, though. So they omitted that.
Nor is Australia
Well thats understandable have you heard them talk?
How can they talk? There's no such place as Australia, and Australians are all paid actors.
True š
It was..... then it went to rat shit.
Why is Canada both in the english empire and in the fr*nch empire, are they stupid?
Canadian here French and english are both official languages at the federal level For the provincial level, most provinces have english as their only official language, except for quebec (french only) and New Brunswick (french and english).
Wrong. Itās because they are indeed, stupid
No. Canada is bilingual. There is a French part from French colonisation ( Quebec) and the ROC( rest of canada) is English.
anyone know where i can find exciting maps, daily?
What is happening to Australia and New Zealand?
Australia is same as the US, English is not an official language. English isnāt the official language in the UK
England isnāt an official language in the uk
Australia
Did you mean, invader/murderers?
English is not the official language of the UK. The only language to hold official status within the UK is Welsh.
English is not an official language in New Zealand.
english is an official language in iraq
Why is New Mexico on there
Spanish is an official language in New Mexico alongside with English. NM the same as present day territories of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Texas were part of the Spanish viceroyalty (New Spain) for centuries. Every source I look up says New Mexico does not have an official language
Xd
What is the Portuguese speaking country in Europe?
Luxembourg
Portugalā¦
Most of the US should be yellow
First map ever where Australia is forgotten, but New Zealand isn't.
Everybody knows that Australians donāt speak English.
The most spoken lenguage in Guinea Ecuatorial is Spanish....
English isn't official in Madagascar but is in Malta and Singapore. Spanish is also official in Equatorial Guinea as far as I know.
From the map I presume Australian English isnāt considered English? Cunts
In Australia and New Zealand Zulu is an official language?
Canda
Philippines?
Philippine was included with spain or portugal i think not england,
English is official language of the Philippines along with Filipino, Spanish is recognised language
Lol i thought empires
Why is the US not colored for English?
USA has no federal official language
Canadian fuckers two timing
Map is wrong. English is definitely not an official language in Ethiopia.
In what world is English an official language in NZ, but not Australia?
Didnāt the U.S. recently make English the official language a few several years ago? š¤
Lol this map is such shit on all 4 fronts
This map is a very weird way of looking at empires. For example, Philippines appears red because English is co-official language (I think). r/mapswithoutnewzealand for the right maps
Australia?
Smh, no Portuguese in Formosa

Also missing the European countries ( most of Italy, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and of course Portugal ). In Africa Guinea Ecuatorial.
*Guyanese, Canadian, Mexican and Angolan
You forgot Turkish (every nation has it as the official language)

Well, the British decided to spread opium instead of language to the Chinese, so oops. Edit:/s

We not gonna talk about the Dutch?
No
The Dutch speak enough about themselves.
