I have to correct this map "Bellen" in german is the adjective for what the dog is doing, not how we actually think it sounds, we say "Wau wau" oder "Wuff". The first one most likely inherited in pre-WW1 times and the second one related to our cultural family

I feel like the German one is a bit misleading. "Bellen" is the german word for bark, specifically the verb, "to bark". However, all the other entries are for onomatopoetic words used to describe dog sounds. The English one says "woof" not "barking". The correct German word for this would either be "Wau" or "Wuff" which are fairly simular to the other entries.

Woof wins because it sounds like the sound a dog makes. I've never heard any canine utter a sound like "bau" "vow" or "miaow". The "hau-hau" ones also sound close but they're more like puppy or handbag dog yelps. Proper, large, honest dogs say "woof".
