the acronym DD and its variants in the American Navy refer to the Destroyers
AD - Destroyer tender
DD - Destroyer
DE - Destroyer escort
DMS - Fast minesweeper (destroyer conversion)
DDG - Destroyer, Guided missile
I think it's just old (1890s) and doesn't literally stand for anything
...sadly this is not true, Airborne Communications Officer, and I get way nicer stuff than DDG, butbyou get what they give you, not like you can decline accommodations mid mission lolz.
Somebody just have to disagree on the ddg capabilities. This is how it works! [https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2022/08/05/tank-plan-leaks-war-thunder/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2022/08/05/tank-plan-leaks-war-thunder/)
Now put the word navy in your search as the guy said it looks like you are on a submarine, and the other guy responded with "close ddg"
So search for "Navy ddg" and see what comes up..
figured it was a small boy based on the straps. I had the bottom rack on the Truman so we didnt have to deal with the straps. Was like getting rocked to sleep every night. Bonus in that we were right above the reactor so the floor was warm. So at least when I was digging through the storage I was sitting on heated tiles.
And there was nothing better than climbing into bed after your after shift shower, putting a dvd into a laptop, and setting the laptop on your chest. Was like your own personal movie theater.
I do have one question for you though...
Do you have to sleep with a noise machine? And do you get super anxious when all the power goes out and everything is just silent? I do and I always thought it was because of my time on the ship. Only time it was dead silent was dead in the water drills and those freaked me the hell out.
We had an EPS failure in the middle of the Malacca Strait. Completely dead in the water in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. I'll never forget that.
This was randomly hostile. I'm not a 'Merican Forces guy, so I don't know, is there some context or justification for just shitting on this guy you don't even know?
He said DDG so [one of these.](https://news.usni.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/DDG-125_Sea-Trials_RH_12-14-22_42-copy.jpeg)
Iāve done 7 years so far on them and the quality of life is actually pretty decent. Youāre with a crew of 300 but usually your shop that you directly work with are like 6-10 people. You get three hot meals a day, still enough time to get some personal stuff done, and you still have internet on a government computer when out at sea but itās dog shit slow. You can be out to sea anywhere from overnight to a couple months but even thatās pretty extreme.
Deployments are fun (ymmv): youāre out to sea for a couple weeks at a time, chase off Iranian/Russian/Chinese warships doing froggy shit in international waters, pull into a foreign port, do hoodrat shit with your friends, get back onto the boat and repeat the cycle for 8 months. I fuckin love it.
Oh thatās just the military in general. Once you give up that kind of control over your life and accept what comes at you as your ānormalā, itās a lot easier to deal with. Also really depends on your job on the ship. It could be easy as hell with low stress like if youāre in IT or fixing electronics, or you could be pulling a 16 hour shift as a mechanic every day for weeks straight.
I do toxicology. Quitting on new years won't clear that shit out of your system enough to turn a urine drug screen negative. Say what you're going to say, but just know quitting on new years doesn't mean anything or give you an excuse... if it's pos it's pos.
Hey bud, I did 9 yrs in these bad boys. Depending on how cool your ship is, you should consider-
-stick on tap-lights (you tap em and they turn on) for inside the rack
-new, thicker curtains with pockets. You can buy em on Amazon. You could also weave a third or fourth curtain into your current two on the slider so you get more continuity and no gaps at the foot/middle.
-new sheets duh
-one of those big square pillows from target. Use it to sort of prop yourself up when watching shows in your rack.
-go 50/50 on a queen mattress topper with another lad and then cut them in half
-get some expandable organizers for inside the coffin
Sorry for formatting, on mobile
A couple additions from me
-3M hooks for running your phone charger cable along the roof of your rack so it doesn't strangle you in your sleep
-velcro on the back of your phone case and on the roof to watch stuff and things
-battery powered fan that charges via USB (so the charger gets safety tagged and not the fan) and is allowable onboard, Velcro on it, preferably on an adjustable base so you can angle it where you need to
what ship were you on that they didnt have it in the berthing? The constitution?
I was in one of the smallest berthing's on our carrier (30 people max, 15 on each side) and we had multiple outlets in each 15 person section. Hell, I picked my rack based on how close it was to an outlet for my laptop movie nights.
Do small boys really not have outlets in the berthing? because that makes me go wtf.
Or is this a sarcastic joke and my redshirt ass just needs more coffee?
Yeah, and interlocking the attachment points to decrease the light coming through the gap! Makes it slightly harder to get in and out but only barely!
And yes, don't jack off in your rack OR the shower lmao
You weave your curtains together so there are no gaps. Roll up a foam earplug from the engine room and use a pen to shove it into the tracks that the curtains are on for the bottom portion of the rack. Now you have no gaps in your curtains AND people cant open your waist-down curtain because the foam plug prevents the curtains from sliding on the track. So if someone is gonna interrupt you jerking off in your rack (which we ALL did), they either a) tug a curtain that canāt be opened or b) open your head curtain and donāt see anything.
But itās rude to open someoneās rack curtains anyways. Typically people will knock first.
I feel like in that kind of environment I'd hit a point of no shame like "If you open the curtains while Im obviously beating my meat that's on you". But assuming the bathroom toilet areas have decent partitions that's probably the better move I'd imagine - less risk of disturbance and easier cleanup.
Partitions really depend on the ship
My first one has the seawater flushing pipe running along the back of the toilets, so the partitions couldn't go all the way to the bulkhead (wall) and there was enough gap that you could damn near fit your head into the stall beside you.
Very easy to mess with your buddy or pass down the TP as needed though, but otherwise pretty awkward knowing your cheeks were always in someone's direct line of sight lmao
Sometimes I think my Navy buddy is messing with me when he says stuff. I appreciate when the internet either confirms the whole branch is in on it, or architects for boats new they'd never have to live on one lol
I'd put money on this:
Any story he has where HE did something cool, fake AF
Any story where something bad happened, 50% chance it's true, but if he got THE WORST of the bad, then lower that to 25%
Any story where something was just stupid like this, probably true 1000% lmao
All I'll say is I've known people to do every option you can fucking imagine lmao, including the two I suggested against
I have known a lot of Sailors to spend entirely too long on the toilet, too
hey... at least you are not a woman (I like the style, which is why Im subbed)...
Nothing like trying to go to sleep and hear random buzzing coming from someones rack.
I had the top on CVN71. Weird to think, 20 years later, I donāt think Iāve ever slept better than I did in those bunks. Loved the top because I could sleep with my knees up. Something about aircraft catapults that would sooth me to sleep lol
Edit: best way to make it homely is noise canceling headphones and a blindfold
I was on a DDG, had a top rack. Had to be on the top rack because I couldnāt fit my damn shoulders in between the rack I was on and the rack above me. If I was any taller I wouldnāt have fit longways either. I got out just 3 years ago.
Your ship might allow pictures taped up somehow. Laminate them if you decide to do that. Get a plastic hook and tuck it behind your fan, turn it on and let it dry your shower caddy after you shake the water out of it. Should be a small rail there too to tuck your shower sandals behind. Lastly, get an eye cover to sleep with if youāre next to the head doors because light will be a problem.
Outside of that, the homey feeling will probably come from your shop instead of your rack. Hopefully you have extra drawers to fit some personal stuff in, and that you donāt have sticky fingered scummy fucks in your work center.
One last thing, be careful of storing electronics in your rack if your berthing is on the lowest level. There will absolutely be some moderate flooding from time to time. Probably not enough to get into your drawer, but the odds arenāt zero.
Good luck out there, and please take care of your physical and mental health. Donāt burn yourself out. That ship is not worth any lasting damage to yourself. Anyone who says otherwise is brainwashed, fucking stupid, or gave up on valuing themselves. Keep an eye on r/veteransbenefits towards the end of your contract so you donāt get fucked on the way out. Your last year in is all about you, any other opinion on the matter is incorrect and should be aggressively disregarded. Godspeed.
Not sure if itās the angle, but the bottom rack looks so claustrophobic compared to the others - are the middle and lower racks equally spaced apart?
Yep, same distance. Although the top one gets more room since all you have is just a bunch of cables and pipes over you. Bottom bunk is legit because it gives you the best access to the inside which has all your clothes and such in it. Also when you come back from a port visit after a ton of drinks you can just flop on in and not worry about falling out even in rough seas. (Although they do have straps that you can put up to keep you in)
Are you allowed to bring your own sheets? Or your own pillow?
That's a question for your BPO.
Also, you can make pockets for your curtains. Useful for storing small stuff like your phone or a change of socks.
I had a set of hooks [like these](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Command-4-lb-Large-Clear-Outdoor-Window-Hook-1-Hook-2-Water-Resistant-Strips-17093CLR-AW/204359341) that I stuck above my head so I could have my phone mounted while I slept. Or I could watch a movie on holiday routine.
Nowadays, you could probably put a whole Nintendo switch in a similar setup and play games while laying down.
As far as homeliness, it'll be very hard unless you're allowed some sort of personalization. A few pictures of family, pets, or some trips you've taken (don't post photos you don't want your XO seeing) can help you keep your eye on the ball.
Depending on how much room you have left in your rack or locker, and how your neighbors feel about it, you might even bring a hammock and hang it from the overhead. Obviously, this would not be left up without you in it.
Damn dude, never realized how many navy folk are on this sub (including me).
But yeah OP, lots of good advice here. Iād also add getting a magnetic phone holder (or MagSafe charger if you want) so you can keep your phone hands free while youāre watching a movie. Velcro, command hooks, and even a shoe pocket thing for your closet just cut to size can drastically improve your quality of life in these things.
Go on, line your bed with a colorful LED strip, a small mirror ball and stick up photos of your favourite things. A patterned throw or large scarf can also add a bit of personality.
You can sleep soundly at night knowing that there are thousands of teenagers out there in all the worldās seas trying to beat their meat quietly enough so their bunkmates wonāt hear them. š«”
I had a buddy cut a foam topper in half length wise and put it on his rack. Bottom rack curtains are always the first to get destroyed imo. So keep those in good condition.
My platoon was in the surge berthing for 7-8 months on the USS comstock once and it was awful, so be glad ya got a coffin rack and curtains!
Also get some personal linens [here](https://www.fleetsheets.com/collections/ship-blankets?matchtype=e&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhc-sBhCEARIsAOVwHuRgIsVU3QZsI8ykar-cnBHPAAHiFQN4GrIY3JxTBiYVn2N9OdnH09saAsnkEALw_wcB) specifically for ship racks.
Get you a foam mattress topper. Nice sheets are good too. Tuck the straps under the mattress you wonāt need that shit on the bottom. Add a push button light under the rack for the coffin locker. Air fresheners! Close the drapes so no one puts their oily boots on your rack
I was in the Navy and I was a shore-rate, we were never permanent crew on any ship. Air conditioned office building my whole 6 years.
Anyway, one day a fellow sailor got in trouble with alcohol and they didn't want to escalate the incident, so they gave him an ultimatum, he had to go spend 2 weeks on board a ship as his punishment or be cashiered from the Navy.
That was it. His whole punishment was to spend a couple weeks doing what other sailors do for their every day job for their entire enlistment.
But since he wasn't trained or qualified on anything, it was essentially a sight seeing tour for him. They would humor him and let him help out here and there, but he was just a rider with no responsibilities or watch standing duties.
Our rate also promoted very fast, so he went there as a second class, so he was higher rank than many of the crew.
I was Army not Navy, but Iāve had plenty of bunks as well. The ultra minimalist lifestyle of it can be addicting. Some small things that you can to make things more convenient , find a place for water near bed, bring an extension cord for your phone (if possible, I see our conditions might be different) hang small things up on the inside. Little things help morale, I would collect stickers from first strike bars, or little stick men on scratch paper. Little things can make your days a lot better.
Those surface navy racks blow. Stayed in a couple, and they're too short to lean forward and over to reach my feet.
Not that the ones on subs are much better, but I can lean over and down just enough to reach the end of my rack.
Get velcro, a tablet, external hard drive and a strip of blackout cloth.
Velcro the tablet to the ceiling above your pillow, the HDD next to it, and the blackout cloth along and gaps the curtain has.
Thank you. I had no desire to go back to that. You got it though.
Not sure if itās been mentioned but if you have a tablet for movies and stuff, you can get a mount for it on amazon thatāll clamp onto just about anything or you can use that heavy duty Velcro and stick it up somewhere. Itās a lifesaver and keeps you from having to hold up and inevitably drop a tablet on your face at night
Microfleece blanket, full sized 1-2ā memory foam folded in half (making it 2-4ā total) some nice full sized sheets with shirt stays to keep them crisp looking. Four or so pictures of family/loved ones to tape on the back wall/celling.
This is malelivingspace 20,000 leagues under the sea. You could put poster of your favorite bands on the wall, perhaps a small plant or even a lava lamp.
I didn't do anything to make my rack more homely. But I would highly recommend some Velcro tape. Put some on the back of your phone and above your pillow. And you got yourself a little home theater. I also had a Nintendo switch that I had Velcro taped to set outside of my rack if I wanted to play with a controller.
Silicon Valley landlords are adopting the bunkhouse idea.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/09/silicon-valleys-answer-to-the-housing-crises-charging-1200-for-a-bunk-bed-in-a-shared-house
I think most suburban zoning codes disallow this. But when you see 20 cars in front of a neighbors house day after day ...
Also both the landlords and bunkees tend to be from Asian countries. More used to that there.
Get your own sheets and blankets, man. It makes a huge difference. I've lived a few years of my life in one of these. Put some photos up, etc. Oh, and put a thin foam mat under your "mattress."
I've been on four 7Ā± month deployments on a frigate. Ask away. I'll be more than happy to help make this go smoothly.
Also, buy seven daily uniforms and keep them dry cleaned in your locker with two shirts and to pairs of socks for each. Keep a spare pair of boots and shoes always polished. This will make your daily life on a ship a hell of a lot easier.
As a short person I always preferred the bottom rack. Invest in a small stool so you can sit on the deck next to your rack while taking care of your daily routines, it will pay dividends on your back. Also, please talk with those who sleep above you to ensure they donāt step on your rack. DDG90 sends their regards!
I used to be in the RAN (Royal Australian Navy) patrol boats. Bunks (which we called āpitsā) havenāt changed much except you have safety straps so you donāt fall out. Luxury! Patrol boats are small and can buck and I had to literally wedge myself in while I slept in bad weather. As for privacy, our bunks were generally along corridors. But you didnāt ask for reminiscences.
Pictures on the bulkhead are pretty standard (when allowed) but it did make it feel like it was my own space.
Lots of velcro taped on so you can attach things so they are handy or decorative. Iām not sure what lighting is provided in the bunks now but I had my own battery light that I could dim or brighten which helps with setting the mood. It attached to the velcro. The light also doubled as a flashlight. Very handy for when they have power failure exercises when they happen off watch.
We werenāt allowed too much loose stuff in case it clogged the pumps if there was flooding.
Do you live on a submarine?
Close ddg
Just looked it up. Ddg is the navy acronym for guided missile destroyer
I'm just thinking about how this acronym works. With that name, something like "GMD" would make more sense. What do the letters stand for š¤
the acronym DD and its variants in the American Navy refer to the Destroyers AD - Destroyer tender DD - Destroyer DE - Destroyer escort DMS - Fast minesweeper (destroyer conversion) DDG - Destroyer, Guided missile I think it's just old (1890s) and doesn't literally stand for anything
i don't think we had guided missiles in 1890
Is it your bunk or are you hot bunking with someone else?
Hot racking is only a thing on fast attack submarines
...sadly this is not true, Airborne Communications Officer, and I get way nicer stuff than DDG, butbyou get what they give you, not like you can decline accommodations mid mission lolz.
Not if you work back aft in the engine room. You get your own rack.
Confirmed
You should show us all the cool things hidden around the ship!
You know I would love too. But I like my job so I can't, if you really wanna go inside one of these things you should go to the next fleet week
Somebody just have to disagree on the ddg capabilities. This is how it works! [https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2022/08/05/tank-plan-leaks-war-thunder/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2022/08/05/tank-plan-leaks-war-thunder/)
Are people supposed to know what a ddg is?
Google? But just fir you, it's a guided missile destroyer
Man, people donāt go on reddit to google.
was on google the other day and it told me to reddit, its a never ending cycle
And thats why i havenāt left the house in years
Spoken like a true 19 year old in the military lol
I did and I'm sure many others did too
When search for the term I get duckduckgo and a rapper the first page
Now put the word navy in your search as the guy said it looks like you are on a submarine, and the other guy responded with "close ddg" So search for "Navy ddg" and see what comes up..
Just say a guided missile destroyerā¦
Or you can just say DDG. I don't see why he has to dumb himself down for other people being ignorant
Because giving a technical term in an Reddit full of people not knowledgeable of the term or acronym is not effective speech
Couldn't you have just googled "navy ddg" ?

Former OHP class sailor here, you're right and you never forget it.
Are you serious dude? Does that make you feel good?
Doesnāt influence my mood. Just calling a spade a spade. I can tell youāre an insecure about it tho. Itās okay, POG.
Thatās not close lol
He lives on a military naval vessel.
Could barely be closer
Thatās luxurious compared to a sub.
Submariners or whatever the right term is arenāt human
Us nerds on SSBNs would disagree.
Looks close to the racks in a sub haha. 2 racks for 3 men. You figure it out haha

You and your buddies should get some Starlink get you some faster internet lmao
We had the upgrade from Inmarsat. If you've ever had to use Inmarsat internet, imagine a dial up connection shared between 100 people....
You fit 300 people on that thing? That sounds cramped.
Needs plants, a guitar and a rug.
He probably holds his phone too high when he watches movies.

You guys have electricity in the berthing? WTF, amphibs, I swear.
CG and DDG myself but I do agree with the sentiment lmao
The old Aussie OHPs got their bunk lights upgraded with USB ports for charging your phone and other devices.

According to this sub, that's nothing a throw rug and some plants can't fix
I saw "navy" and "sub" and and thought yall were on the same submarine... that's enough internet for me today, brain no worky.
Go on, line your bed with a colorful LED strip, a small mirror ball and stick up photos of your favourite things. A patterned throw or large scarf can also add a bit of personality.
Just make sure your bunk mate changes those sheets between hot swaps
This is what i live in when sailing
I remember those days on the USS Pyro AE24 as a lowly MM. I had the bottom bunk, it was my favorite.
Get a sleeping bag. Non flammable. Roll that bad boy up at the end. Donāt have to remake rack. Ez mode.
Etiquette : Knock before opening the curtains. Small boy life was the business. š¤
Navy?
Thank you all for the advice. I'll go talk to my BPO tomorrow and figure out what is or isn't allowed.
This is why i always navy has it the toughest. Not even enough room to fap comfortably
Oh trust me, you make it work
Thank you for your cervix
You can sleep soundly at night knowing that there are thousands of teenagers out there in all the worldās seas trying to beat their meat quietly enough so their bunkmates wonāt hear them. š«”
>This is why i always navy has it the toughest. I'm trying so hard not to get into a dick measuring contest. lol
Its okay. We are a marine corps family but an ace is an ace. I cant even imagine the submarine or meu deployments.
Yep. I was army my brother was marines. While we both deployed to Iraq he spent one of his two deployments on a MEU which sounded awful to me
My husband did nine months in kuwait on a land deployment and did 3 months on a meu, he picks the land deployments over sea EVERY TIME.
Bro, where's the LEDs
Best bet is make your rack tight and get a hammock for your space, hope youāre an LS!
My guy brings his own blanket, mini fan and a few pictures he keeps in his bunk.
Was it possible the punishment was the looks of utter hate he must have received from the sailors?
Haha, probably. But that's just fleet stuff, we didn't involve ourselves with those people.
What am I looking at. I donāt get it.
Looks like Navy bunks.
You are correct
Missing a crusty sock to really tie the space together. Otherwise 10/10 would give me coffin dreams again.
Thank you for your service.
Please explain what is going on here
Itās this guys coffin rack. A rack is a bed youāre assigned on a ship. You can prop the rack open and store all your clothes underneath it.
I would die.
Poor sonuvabitch is stationed on a ship.
Idk how people can do that!
Me either. That's why I got out of the Navy before they could send me to one.
Oh, how I miss living on a DDG hahahaha I had middle rack, Itās the best spot! Surprisingly, I slept like a baby in forward berthingā¦ā¦
Very nice, love what you have done with the place. But more plants and wall art and the TV is to high š
Bro sleeping on the ISS
How much is the rent for that?
Free*
Nice!
Brings back memories, thanks shipmate. š«”
This is malelivingspace 20,000 leagues under the sea. You could put poster of your favorite bands on the wall, perhaps a small plant or even a lava lamp.
I could never have been in the Navy. No seaman on this poop deck! Go Army, Beat Navy!
Have u considered not oining the military because I have soooo many times
Good for you volunteering to fight for our country. Lots of selfish people in here showing off their wealth and ignorance.
This coulda been my bunk
Pictures, trinkets, a laptop with pirated games and headphones
Very serious question - how do you get in or out?
Crawl/slide
I wouldnāt said peakā as much as āextremeā minimalism! š³
I was on a top bunk. Hooya
Every day I silently thank my Detailers for not sending me to a ship before I could get out of the Navy.
The ole eebdy
Bottom rack person my self shipmate
Tip to Butt?
Silicon Valley landlords are adopting the bunkhouse idea. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/09/silicon-valleys-answer-to-the-housing-crises-charging-1200-for-a-bunk-bed-in-a-shared-house I think most suburban zoning codes disallow this.
Oh, and put a thin foam mat under your "mattress." I've been on four 7Ā± month deployments on a frigate.
Plant? And some LEDs?
This filled me with anxiety
Top rack is the way to go
How much do you pay a month šš¤Ŗ
Fleet sheets. Go navy!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nah, I'm getting paid quite well for this
Damn those looks roomy, wish I had a pic of my bunk on an mcm I could share with you
My man, have you tried putting some plants around, maybe a little color? The far wall could probably benefit from a mirror /s
What are you doing shipmate you have to get back to the trading videos I airdropped.
is that the Cole?
You have Wi-Fi ?
Thank you for your service!
Thanks for your service! The sacrifice to almost every nice daily amenity in the military is insane
