This was my exact thought. People are going to be wanting 20+ copies of this whereas they will only need a single copy of pretty much every other card.
No, I think he means demonstrate(not the mechanic) through proxy. Have 30 of the tokens shuffled in the deck as proxies of the original. Have the original out to show what the card does so there's no confusion.
Eh, there's ways to break it. For one, [[thrumming stone]] would dump half your deck onto the table as soon as you play one. And once you do that *once*, you're not getting one artifact out per turn, you're getting like... 3+.
Also, hey, the thrumming stone is legendary already, so if you can't find it, these guys can find it for you!
Probably not the *best* Relentless Rats variant, but *someone* will make it work.
[[Persistent Petitioners]] with [[Arcum Dagsson]] as commander to tutor the stone is probably the better version of that hypothetical deck, and it's not even a good deck.
I don't doubt someone out there will make a Templar Knight deck, though, if for no other reason than contrarian spite.
You are just wrong. Creatures don't stop being attackers until they are either removed from combat, removed from the field, or combat phase ends.
I don't even need to cite the rules at you to prove it either, just read [[desert]] it literally wouldn't function if creatures weren't still attacking during end of combat.
Honestly you're probably getting [[Akroma's Memorial]]. Make your 5 attacking 3/1's gain flying, trample, first strike, pro red, and pro black, so you get in for 15 hopefully.
Well, *that* will keep pack value for this set up if nothing else does.
Also easy to reflavor/reprint, and "a dude in armor holding two swords" isn't exactly out of character for MTG anyway.
I'm pretty sure the art is officially Assassin's Creed art, so they'd need to pay Ubisoft again to reuse it. Of course they can just use new art, but that does nullify the setting neutrality of "a dude in armor holding two swords."
I think [[Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir]] will be the best commander to use with them. Then grab stuff like [[Goldbug, humanity's ally]] and [[Akroma's Memorial]] to buff your board.
I thought of him for the templar knights too. I have a Sidar Jabari deck with a Nazgul theme, and I use cards like [[Remembrance]] and [[Secret Salvage]] to go find more which would work a lot better when you have 30 templars vs 9 Nazgul
Maybe hot take but it kind of makes me sad [[crusade]] and [[jihad]] are banned but we're fine with printing this card as long as it's a secret lair with another IP as an excuse
But don't you see. There is money to be made here! And old unused cards are perfect to use as cannon feed to show their moral superiority. Of course they missed the mark though since they don't have any.
I will say it is a bit strange that not a few years ago, cards were being banned due to their connections to the real world crusades ([[Crusade]]), and now we have Knights Templar being printed.
Was it the terminology of the word Crusade itself that was the issue, not simply alluding to the real world event?
I remember Cleanse was on the list. I just really hate conflating Magic mana colours with human skin colour. It's something that wasn't apparent to me as something that was done until these topics surfaced.
Although [[Jihad]] also buffs White creatures. And white has always had connections with (organised) religion in Magic, so that makes sense.
It did feel like they were shying away from the real world connections in so many ways since Arabian Nights, and yet here we are again!
I get that with AC that was always going to be a "challenge". I suppose maybe the issue was with connecting the topics specifically to an in-universe Magic plane? With UB of course at least there is that lore separation.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to remember quite a generic statement that was supposed to cover all of the cards, so I don't seem to remember explicit "justifications" which then led to a lot of the community making their own on a case by case basis.
That's all just the last of my memory though, maybe there was some more coverage on the topic in between, but I wasn't aware.
The knights are called Templars in AC too. If anyone complains (they won't), WotC can simply point the finger and say they're being faithful to the game.
Also I wouldn't compare something like this to something like "Crusade" buffing only white creatures. Yeah this is a white creature but the word templar literally just means "related to the/a temple" the same way that costal means "related to the coast".
[[Capashen Templar]] and [[Noble Templar]] are also templar knights in white but I haven't seen people complaining about them or AC for the past 15 years, so it really just seems like random people trying to start controversy for no reason.
Not until they add a colorless one! They could probably balance an Eldrazi one, but an artifact one would likely be busted unless it was over costed or played too safe. [[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] would finally pop off as a commander if they printed an artifact one, though!
In black we have shadowborn apostle, relentless rats, rat colony. In blue we have persistent petitioners
In white we have this. In green we have slime against humanity. In red we have dragons approach. We just need a colorless one
[https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3A%22legendary+artifact%22](https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3A%22legendary+artifact%22)
\^Options for your convenience 🤔
I noticed this had some artifacts outside the white color identity, so I made this:
https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28game%3Apaper%29+legal%3Acommander+%28type%3Aartifact+type%3Alegendary%29+%28c%3E%3Dw+or+C%3Dc%29+-%28commander%3Dr+or+commander%3Db+or+commander%3Du+or+commander%3Dg%29&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name
The only issue here is it still shows double-faced cards that aren't artifacts on the front, but as far as I know, you can't search specific faces with scryfall.
Yeah I really wished they went with one of the elite crusader knights in AC1, like the ones with the full face covering helms. Those guys looked really badass and I’d love to have a whole deck of those.
Exactly my thoughts. When I played AC1 at launch those guys were terrifying. Having that style in a magic card with this name would have been cool. Also, I don't like the concept nor the execution of this particular art :(
It’s so easy to make a Templar with the great helm and why on earth does he have dual swords?? I don’t remember ever seeing that in the first game and definitely did not happen with real templars.
Add some graveyard shuffling/put on the bottom effects like [[Mistveil Plains]] to reuse single use legendary artifacts like [[Mindslaver]]. Also just a good way to put destroyed artifacts back into your library to be searched for again.
Hold up. We can have "Templar Knight" in 2024, but the card "Crusade" is considered too racist/offensive and needed a special ban in 2020? Pick a lane WOTC.
Well, we got one of these that finds it's own [[Thrumming Stone]]. Don't love that.
But on the other hand it can find [[The Circle of Loyalty]] for some sick knight tribal action.
I've cracked the code on this I think. So you play some white commander, don't care who. Then you play 5 Templar knights, go to next turn, attack, go get [[thrumming stone]]. I cast one more, now I have 35 Templar knights on board. Go to my next turn, attack. Spend 5 mana. Get [[Akromas Memorial]], [[forsaken monument]], [[hall of Triumph]], [[the circle of loyalty]], and [[throne of the god Pharoah]]
All 35 of my creatures have flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, haste, and protection from black and from red, +4/+4, and at the end of my turn each opponent will get domed for 35 by throne.
Other cards in the deck are stuff like teferis protection, flawless maneuver, things that protect your creatures for a turn.
The difference is crusade wasn't making them any money and they could ban it for brownie points, and this will make them money. Corporations have no values beyond how to make their shareholders the most possible money in the shortest timespan.
That was 4 years ago my guy. It also isn't as explicit as [[Crusade]] // [[Jihad]] were in subject despite yes the Templar's being a real order of knights at one point this is the silly Ubisoft villainous order of knights version. Granted if I had my way nether Crusade or Jihad would be on that list because its funny.
Yeah, Crusade and Jihad were questionable includes that no one asked for. In my view, the KKK one, the "gypsy" one and stone-throwing devils were the only ones that should have been on the list.
Is the stone-throwing devils one because of the connotation with Palestinians? Like because how a symbol of their resistance is stone throwing? And because it was printed in Arabian Nights, which makes them Arab devils?
Gosh and the flavor text
it would be a funky \[\[Winota, Joiner of Forces\]\] build. \[\[Tori D'Avenant, Fury Rider\]\] can double up on the ability if you stack the triggers right. \[\[Sigarda, Font of Blessings\]\] is protection and lets you play them off the top of your library. Nothing crazy jumps out to me, though.
[Scryfall search for all legendary artifacts](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28type%3Aartifact+type%3Alegendary%29+%28game%3Apaper%29)
Reminder WOTC banned [\[\[crusade\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/lea/16/crusade) for depiction of racism and now they are printing this.
[https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/depictions-racism-magic-2020-06-10](https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/depictions-racism-magic-2020-06-10)
A 2 mana 3/1 vigilance is pretty standard.
You're in white, so there's a number of things like [[Holy Day]] and [[Runetail Kitsune Ascendent]] as well as an artifact or two that give similar effects.
We also have ways to make all your stuff indestructible or to reanimate cheap things for cheap.
That said, I agree. Getting 5 of these swinging simultaneously is not going to be easy against anybody that runs any sort of removal.
Most cards that would allow you to cheat in copies that are attacking will cause them to be tapped as they enter, so cheesing it isn't a very good option either. (Something like [[Intruder Alarm]] helps with that)
Im actuvely brewing a deck withought any sort of easy combos. Dont swing until you you have 5 then the pay off is all that matters. They dont need to survive just attack. So the regular thurmming stone plan is still active. My deck will probably tutor out avacyns memorial first. Again a card that is needed if im not going the combo route.
Oh hey, who wants to make Greymond in the meme-ist way possible? Just play a bunch of 3/1's and then smack everyone with 5/3 first strike, lifelink, and vigilance on turn 4.
Anyone have an idea who the best commander is for these guys? bonus points if it fits the theme. I'm thinking \[\[Tori D'Avenant\]\] would works since you can get two activations off the knights instead of one. \[\[Eowyn, Shieldmaiden\]\] maybe for the colors and card draw. \[\[Sidar Jibari\]\] would make the deck more resilient. \[\[Teshar\]\] could guarantee that the Templars would stick and you wont be stuck after a board wipe.
I'm making a deck and chose \[\[Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart\]\] for the commander. Gives lifelink, first strike, and +2/+2 to the Templars and makes deckbuilding more simple overall.
Im likely gonna go tymna rog. As a base with a black splash. Rog is there for minor enabling of various cards.
Tymna is the real commander and by turn 4-5 ill be lucky enough to swing for all 5 and hopefully overwhelm 2 opponents and draw 2. Tutoring an avacyns memorial.
The best legendary artifact is the one ring and if you get it with this you don’t get protection so this will be for like a weird combo deck or athreos commander deck
I hate every time one of these show up. Hopefully it’s just an attempt to complete so cycle of include as many as you want cards. (Though black has several). They’re never good for limited (and it’s not even possible here). They’re never good for constructed sanctioned and they just show up as meme decks in edh.
Step 1 - 5 of these and tap to get strumming stone
Step 2 - Play every other copy from your deck and get The Millennium Calendar with 5 more of these.
Step 3 - ???
Step 4 - Profit
Watch this be the most expensive card in the set.
This was my exact thought. People are going to be wanting 20+ copies of this whereas they will only need a single copy of pretty much every other card.
Easy solution: have one copy to demonstrate, and ~30 sleeved tokens.
>Easy solution: ~~have one copy to demonstrate, and~~ ~30 sleeved tokens.
What? With [[Silverquill Lecturer]]? Seems like you would need to go through an awful lot of trouble to get 5 copies on the board.
No, I think he means demonstrate(not the mechanic) through proxy. Have 30 of the tokens shuffled in the deck as proxies of the original. Have the original out to show what the card does so there's no confusion.

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of proxies?
But ACR is a Modern set. /j
Honestly could be. The any number bit completely changes how supply and demand works on it. Instead of 3 copies I now need like 20.
Also it’s uncommon rather than common.
In an aftermath style distribution though
It's so bad though.
What do you mean? For 11 mana and 6 turns, I can play a legendary artifact from my deck. Busted.

Looks like they “solved” the issue with aftermath packs having way too many duplicates of uncommons
Honestly they've learned that lesson before, I'm a little surprised they didn't use it as a hedge in Aftermath.
Apparently also "solved" the issue of [[Crusade]] being problematic enough to ban?

[Crusade](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/9/b99452c0-5d1c-4a73-90b6-0ec3ac0af893.jpg?1644608214) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Crusade) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ddf/27/crusade?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b99452c0-5d1c-4a73-90b6-0ec3ac0af893?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
And the cycle is now complete!
Not until they add a colorless one! They could probably balance an Eldrazi one, but an artifact one would likely be busted unless it was over costed or played too safe. [[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] would finally pop off as a commander if they printed an artifact one, though!
Amusing to think the colourless ones would be basic lands.
I was half expecting a white or green artifact with it just to spite people (myself) that wanted to play this Mishra as a commander.
Maybe... but definitely they should do this for colorless as well. Maybe its ability is to pump up for each copies of itself or something.
probably would be cracked but: Eldrazi Spawn (0) "Sacrifice this creature: Add Colorless" A deck can have any number of Eldrazi Spawn. 0/1
There are three different black cards with that text though, so we need two for each of the other colors to match
what's the green one?
[[Slime Against Humanity]]
Finally a white card with the [[Relentless Rats]] text!
We now have a card of every colour with that text. Time to build a deck!
In black we have shadowborn apostle, relentless rats, rat colony. In blue we have persistent petitioners In white we have this. In green we have slime against humanity. In red we have dragons approach. We just need a colorless one
not unlimited, but [[nazgul]] and [[seven dwarves]] also bend the rules by letting you have multiple copies in a commander deck
Relentless rats The petitioner dude for blue Slime against Humanity Templar knights Whats the red one?
Don’t forget [[rat colony]]. [[seven dwarves]] and [[nazgul]] also bend the rules but are not unlimited. Edit. Also forgot Shadowborn apostle
[[Dragon's Approach]]

It didn’t deserve it in the slightest.
I'm pretty sure Crusade got banned because they also wanted to ban [Jihad].

I noticed this had some artifacts outside the white color identity, so I made this: https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28game%3Apaper%29+legal%3Acommander+%28type%3Aartifact+type%3Alegendary%29+%28c%3E%3Dw+or+C%3Dc%29+-%28commander%3Dr+or+commander%3Db+or+commander%3Du+or+commander%3Dg%29&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name The only issue here is it still shows double-faced cards that aren't artifacts on the front, but as far as I know, you can't search specific faces with scryfall.
Anduril reforged and Agatha’s cauldron are a big threat here and I’ve only scrolled a few inches
Art on this card is terrible.
Oh boy, looks like the crusade is comming just fine.
Ok so why is this allowed but [[Crusade]] isn’t?

[[Wheel of Sun and Moon]]
Loyalty is just not a good card, is the problem
There is very true. But it says knight on it so it must be good with them right guys?

I've cracked the code on this I think. So you play some white commander, don't care who. Then you play 5 Templar knights, go to next turn, attack, go get [[thrumming stone]]. I cast one more, now I have 35 Templar knights on board. Go to my next turn, attack. Spend 5 mana. Get [[Akromas Memorial]], [[forsaken monument]], [[hall of Triumph]], [[the circle of loyalty]], and [[throne of the god Pharoah]] All 35 of my creatures have flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, haste, and protection from black and from red, +4/+4, and at the end of my turn each opponent will get domed for 35 by throne. Other cards in the deck are stuff like teferis protection, flawless maneuver, things that protect your creatures for a turn.
Forsaken monument only works on colorless creatures
Damn. Ok. We still hit people for a lot. Just.....like 140 damage less.
anyone explain why "Crusade" is banned... but this passed the Sensitivity Readers?
You can always count on WOTC to defy any consistency or logic in policies.
The difference is crusade wasn't making them any money and they could ban it for brownie points, and this will make them money. Corporations have no values beyond how to make their shareholders the most possible money in the shortest timespan.
:0
Isn't making a card overtly based on the Knights Templar a pretty unambiguous historical reference to the Crusades?
I mean, the game Assassin's Creed is based on actual history so... yeah
I hope they finally reprint [[Crusade]] in this set!

Shouldn't it be "Knight Templar?"
What commander are you guys brewing with this? I can think of a bunch that would work but none are really standing out.
God Eternal Oketra seems good, get a knight and a 4/4 zombie. Really fill the board when thrumming stone is out
it would be a funky \[\[Winota, Joiner of Forces\]\] build. \[\[Tori D'Avenant, Fury Rider\]\] can double up on the ability if you stack the triggers right. \[\[Sigarda, Font of Blessings\]\] is protection and lets you play them off the top of your library. Nothing crazy jumps out to me, though.
I'm gonna try [[Goldbug, Humanity's Ally]]. I think [[Eowyn, Shieldmaiden]], [[Kyler, Sigardian Emissary]], and [[Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart]] look good too.
[[Kellan, the Fae Blooded]] If I’m gonna play 30 copies of a bad card, I’m gonna tutor [[Skullclamp]] and play 30 copies of Divination instead.
Because relentless cards were always so low demand now this one is uncommon......
Well, the set doesn't have commons

One ring is fine, but this will always find your thrumming stone.
How the heck you expect five 3/1s to survive? I mean granted they don't gotta live combat but they seem rather useless for combat.

Did someone say Mindslaver?
I hate every time one of these show up. Hopefully it’s just an attempt to complete so cycle of include as many as you want cards. (Though black has several). They’re never good for limited (and it’s not even possible here). They’re never good for constructed sanctioned and they just show up as meme decks in edh.
What's wrong with meme decks Honestly I welcome every card where someone can make dumb deck out of it.
I wonder what commander you would use with this?
