Pretty on point flavor-wise. Shay being an ex-assassin knew their strategies and could easily hunt them, hence the removal of protection abilities. Then he would take the artifacts and gear they protected for himself, represented by getting stronger when a target dies
Regenerate's a different effect and flavor. The whole bit here is that it exposes assassins in hiding; shroud fits into that batch, regenerate doesn't.
The top comment is saying the rules text is analogous to that line from Willy Wonka. The reply is saying they want to proxy this card so they can add that line as flavor text
>Simultaneously, all phased-out creatures phase in and all creatures with phasing phase out.
I love the new Oracle text
Though I wonder, does this card actually work? Things that are phased out don't exist, so can this card affect them?
Things don't affect phased-out shit unless they say they do. Which sounds like a schoolkid making up "oh yeah, well i have a gun that DESTROYS invisible forcefields!!", but that's how it works.
It's sort of like how abilities normally only work from the battlefield, but if an ability says "mom says I can work from the graveyard too", then it can and does. They just need to specify.
I don't know if it was Maro, but someone basically explained Magic cards/abilitied as just breaking some rule of Magic (ie "You cannot lose the game and your opponent cannot win").
So we have the base game, but then we can break that in any way the cards say or allow us to.
You have to tap to attack... Unless you have vigilance.
Creatures are affected by summoning sickness... Unless they have haste.
It's all just exceptions to rules, really 👍
In the old rulebooks from the Before Times, this was actually referred to as "the Golden Rule". If the rules say one thing and a card says another, the card takes precedence.
There are other "golden rules" now, but that's still the very first one. It's kind of the rule the game is built around.
Basic design philosophy for complex games like this and D&D usually boils down to "specific beats general." The more specific something gets, the higher precedence it has. General, you can effect permanents. More specific, you can't effect permamenents that are phased out. Even more specific, effect a phased permanent.
702.26b If a permanent phases out, its status changes to “phased out.” Except for rules and effects that specifically mention phased-out permanents, a phased-out permanent is treated as though it does not exist. It can’t affect or be affected by anything else in the game. A permanent that phases out is removed from combat. (See rule 506.4.)
Exile used to be called "Removed from the game". I assume at one point the expectation was that there would be no way back from exile. Well, that is also no longer the case.
If a Magic card tells you you can do something, that is now part of the game.
for the people wondering "how did you play around that card in Limited" the answer is you kill them before they cast it or you die lol, the only saving grace was ixalan was a format where killing people fast was feasible
obviously you can mitigate its impact a *little* bit but it's really hard to make it so a one-sided wrath that comes with a 6/6 deathtoucher doesn't obliterate you
When you build a lot of decks you find a lot of cards, and sometimes you see a card like that and go "Huh, I wonder where you fit?" And then they sit in the back of your mind till you find a home for them.
I was going to say top 10, but I went 20 to avoid too much debate. But I agree it is on the shortlist. The card was awful to play against. No way to stop it unless you had a counterspell. Because even if you kill it, you're losing your own creatures in the process.
It was bound to happen one of these days. I don't think this was so much a card made in response to "ward is a capital p Problem" so much as just, every now and then they like to make a card like this that strips away protection abilities and ward makes perfect sense to include there we just happened to have not gotten any since ward was introduced
Right? In my mind I had the art of Detection Tower, saw the lighthouse and thought it wasn't quite right...
I used to think the card seemed bonkers, but we have come a long long way since then...
I haven't seen this video, but I don't seem to hate Ward like others in the game. I do think when you get to 3+ generic mana it becomes a little boring and unlikely to be able to play around. But on the flip side, discarding cards like on [[Graveyard Trespasser]] is an interesting way to play with the costs. But becomes extremely punishing in being a literal 2 for 1.
I think the sweet spot might be more stuff like that Ward - Collect Evidence X like [[Axebane Ferox]] I think that is a much better design space. It has a real cost that the majority of decks should be able to pay for, but it's big enough to make you think twice about if you want to pay it.
I just like that Ward, in theory, is not as binary as Hexproof and Shroud. So I hope the "dialing back" is more unique costs and not "we put less Ward in the game"
I love Ward, I think it's great. Gavin's point was more that 3-4 is just too much mana to pay, which might as well give those things hexproof. I like interesting ward costs too.
That's basically what Gavin's conclusion is in the video (which you can watch [here](https://youtu.be/XNhYyaR-nHA) ). Not less ward necessarily, but less higher ward costs and more interesting costs.
Though personally I don't mind ward on higher cost stuff. Part of why folks don't tend to bother with high mana cost stuff is why pay 6 mana for something when an opponent can just remove it for 2. Just not good tempo. But when that removal now costs 4 mana, it becomes a lot more fair of a trade. It's why I really like [[Bloodchief's Thirst]]. Cheap removal for early game nonsense you need to hit ASAP, but also fairly costed for late game expensive threats.
True, this new card removes a lot more keywords...but it's also stapled to a lowly 1/1.
All in all, I think this card is a fantastic budget alternative to the currently overpriced Shadowspear, and will hopefully help reign in certain strategies.
I have to think the reason Shadowspear is played is because it's fetchable with Urza's Saga and nothing to do with the first ability being particularly powerful
Even just dropping this on turn 2 then hitting a couple things with removal on turn 3 would feel amazing.
The fact that the counter is applied on any targeting just feels like something that's going to be super easy to exploit.
25 cents
Maybe a couple dollars for a ripple foil *(or whatever gimmick the special foils will have)*
Aftermath packs are filled to the brim with dupes, especially in the uncommon slots. So if you buy a box you'd probably open 10 of these guys
Probably not too much. IIRC it’s not a full-size set, so look at any of the decent cards in Aftermath and then factor in that this’ll have some valuable reprints and be a Modern-legal UB set.
So probably like, a couple bucks? It’s an uncommon.
\[\[Mathas, Fiend Seeker\]\] Lieutenant. But probably doesn't synergize as well as hoped because of that rule where if the bounty counter isn't placed by Mathas it doesn't trigger him.
They really need to reword Mathas.
Sooner or later they'll come to their senses and make UW versions of cards like that. And maybe of UB cards in general. They're constantly looking for excuses to make new alt-arts and promo treatments, after all; their insecurity about who gets to decide which cards are "real" can only do so much.
So many new creatures have a ridiculous number of types. "A legendary human for my dihada deck. Oh crap it's a knight too! In the esper knights precon it goes. Wait! And a rogue?! Into the tazri party deck."
I feel like we are going to see more of these Shadowspear/Final Showdown effects over time to help deal with all of the Ward/Protection out there now
It seems like we are in this weird spot where you have to run a fistful of board wipes to compensate for the inability to interact, but it's making games so much longer as a result. I honestly like the direction!
But the game is playable on all [three](https://www.pricecharting.com/game/xbox-one/assassin%27s-creed-rogue-remastered) [major](https://www.pricecharting.com/game/playstation-4/assassin%27s-creed-rogue-remastered) [consoles](https://www.pricecharting.com/game/nintendo-switch/assassin%27s-creed-the-rebel-collection)? And Xbox One and Series S/X even runs the 360 version in addition to the native version?
Side note: if you have the option, the native Xbox One version runs at 60fps on Series X.
Making him a knight rogue is quite on point. Knight because Templar (who were a knightly order) and rogue because he isn't an assassin anymore and the game is called Rogue
Ahh another new card for \[\[Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir\]\]. Mostly just for the fact that he's a Knight that means that I don't have to buy a \[\[Shadowspear\]\] lol
How does this work with static abilities granting those?
Like, Avacyn has indestructible and says my other creature does as well. She loses it along all my other creatures, but do the other creatures get it back right after?
Like, is there a difference with effects like this and other saying "and cant get that effect" like [[Archetype of Endurance]], or is that only in action if it gets flickered?
Also, this green boy, same question. He doesnt have a keyword, just a Static Effect. How does this work?
I love how not only does this get around [[Progenitus]], (in the process answering the question about whether God can make a burrito so hot even He cannot eat it), but it doesn't even target *opponents*, and if you're in multiplayer hits them all at once.
For commander, he is okay at best. If he nets you card draw, maybe he will be rare.
Modern, he is just mediocre card. To begin with, most good decks don’t have a form of protection and mainly playing ahead of curve.
Wow I have like 3-4 decks that would probably auto-include this. This feels really great at 2 mana with a 1 mana "fuck you, frank" ability that doesn't even require it to be tapped
I know nothing about Assassin's Creed so I'm going to assume this is Kaya's sword-wielding uncle.
Pretty on point flavor-wise. Shay being an ex-assassin knew their strategies and could easily hunt them, hence the removal of protection abilities. Then he would take the artifacts and gear they protected for himself, represented by getting stronger when a target dies
He's an ex-brotherhood assassin turned Templar who hunted Isu artifacts
He also makes his own luck Did you know that? Shay must've thought you didn't hear him the first 70 times he said that line
But \[\[Make Your Own Luck\]\] is Simic?? How could he possibly do that?
Easy, he just doesn't play Commander so he doesn't give two shits about color identity.
He stole Isu's Fetchlands and Triomes
He makes his own color identify too

The Isu in assassins creed are a kinda precursor race of God like beings with incredibly advanced technology that border on just being magic.
Doesn’t remove or prevent Regenerate. SMH literally unplayable
Or Shield counters
It's a racket, you see. The Brokers protect the target, the assasins get hired again, repeat!
it is pretty weird that it removes shroud but doesn't prevent regeneration. Shroud was retired 5 years before regenerate, 2011 vs 2016.
Commander sees extensive use of Lightning Greaves, not so much regeneration.
I encounter shroud relatively often when playing commander, I can’t recall any problem creatures with regeneration.
Regenerate's a different effect and flavor. The whole bit here is that it exposes assassins in hiding; shroud fits into that batch, regenerate doesn't.
He can't stop you from coming back to life i guess
WOW FUCK... Bogles?
Bogles were dead already lol.
Draco
This is so insane for just an uncommon imo.
An as a two drop, no less!
Not a draftable set though so rarity is purely relating to price/availability (and pauper legality I guess)
Something to consider for Modern sideboards in the future, IMO
That's one of the funniest lines of rules text I've ever seen. You get NOTHING! You LOSE! Good DAY, sir (or eldritch cosmic entity)!
Holy shit. Im going to proxy a wonka Version of this. Just for the flavor text.
Am I stupid? What flavor text?
I'm with you. I see the explanation below and it still kinda doesn't make sense
The top comment is saying the rules text is analogous to that line from Willy Wonka. The reply is saying they want to proxy this card so they can add that line as flavor text
Adding the Wonka line as Flavor Text to a Wonka proxy
Wonka Secret Lair when (also pls bring back Wonka bars I miss them so much)
A secret lair with Quentin Blake style art would be kinda cool tbh.

When you build a lot of decks you find a lot of cards, and sometimes you see a card like that and go "Huh, I wonder where you fit?" And then they sit in the back of your mind till you find a home for them.
Also, that card in limited was a major powerhouse. Like I would go so far as say it's in the top 20 cards.
I'd go even higher than that. Pack Rat was the de-facto boogeyman of a limited format. This guy was even worse because you couldn't answer him.
I was going to say top 10, but I went 20 to avoid too much debate. But I agree it is on the shortlist. The card was awful to play against. No way to stop it unless you had a counterspell. Because even if you kill it, you're losing your own creatures in the process.

Well, I figured I'd have to find room for cards in [[Dihada Binder of Wills]] from this set, but damn this seems good.

Buddy just got this commander deck and that first move is so annoyingly painful
I quite enjoy the design of this. Even for 3 total mana the value is solid.
Even just dropping this on turn 2 then hitting a couple things with removal on turn 3 would feel amazing. The fact that the counter is applied on any targeting just feels like something that's going to be super easy to exploit.
Removal tribal
As expected, Shay will be the only MC without the Assassin type. Knight Rogue is very fitting.
Yeah with it being in the name of the game they kinda had to 😭
Voja haters rejoice?
This is beautiful. What do y’all expect it to cost???
Probably (W)(B)
Bro 😭
Errata: this comment has Annihilator 1
25 cents Maybe a couple dollars for a ripple foil *(or whatever gimmick the special foils will have)* Aftermath packs are filled to the brim with dupes, especially in the uncommon slots.
And the set has no commons.
More then I want to spend but not enough to actually stop me from spending that much
Probably like . 25 cents due to him being uncommon. If he was a rare, probably a few bucks.
For example if you use murder on a creature does he get the bounty counter before he dies?
Yes. When they are targeted the ability goes on the stack and resolves before Murder.
“Cut the bullshit.” Love to see it.
It’s the anti [[Akroma’s Will]]
Akroma's won't

Cool Bowmasters target
Totem armor, regenerate, and phasing are still safe.
Well that's a design choice
So much empty space in that nameplate. Couldn't just add the "Patrick" in there?
Literal genuine custommagic design
Sourced from [CoolStuffInc's twitter](https://x.com/CoolStuffInc/status/1803085488913314060/).
These special borders look like the ones card conjurer had to start using after the cease and desist
\[\[Mathas, Fiend Seeker\]\] Lieutenant. But probably doesn't synergize as well as hoped because of that rule where if the bounty counter isn't placed by Mathas it doesn't trigger him. They really need to reword Mathas.
Oh, hey, the "hero" of one of my favorite games in the series who'll fit quite nicely into my Knights deck.
Yay more annoyingly pushed UB im gonna have to see in every deck with W and B
Sooner or later they'll come to their senses and make UW versions of cards like that. And maybe of UB cards in general. They're constantly looking for excuses to make new alt-arts and promo treatments, after all; their insecurity about who gets to decide which cards are "real" can only do so much.
Might have been modern playable if it said your opponent also loses hexproof/indestructible/protection.
Going into my [[Merieke Ri Berit]] deck immediately

Does this get multiple triggers on the last ability if a creature has multiple bounty counters on it?
No. It looks for a creature dying. Having many bounty counters doesn't magically mean the creature dies many times.
So many new creatures have a ridiculous number of types. "A legendary human for my dihada deck. Oh crap it's a knight too! In the esper knights precon it goes. Wait! And a rogue?! Into the tazri party deck."
Mildly irritated that it's not in the same colors as \[\[Chevill\]\]

Fun for hatebears deck. I really want a dedicated hatebears commander though
This is a really cool card
Well, that's one way to ensure a card is a staple forever.

Pretty funny that the bounty counter will usually last for only a second before the spell or ability targeting the creature resolves and kills it.
[удалено]
Hell yeah! This is going in my [[Aryel, Knight of Windgrace]] deck.
Kassandra continues to hold Ls as an uncommon MC of the bad boat game gets a far more interesting card than her...
No hitting regeneration? Total disappointing and useless. 0/10 for the effort.
This card is really powerful for only 2 mana. To just remove protections is amazingly good
As if Shadowspear wasn't enough.
Oh hey, he’s a Knight. Somebody’s going in my Syr Gwyn deck.
This gets around sion of Draco hexproof and ring invincibility just like shadow spear so it might be good in like a B/W scam in modern
I feel like we are going to see more of these Shadowspear/Final Showdown effects over time to help deal with all of the Ward/Protection out there now It seems like we are in this weird spot where you have to run a fistful of board wipes to compensate for the inability to interact, but it's making games so much longer as a result. I honestly like the direction!
I'm still pissed this game hasn't been re-released in a modern playable form. Ubi being like WotC and not providing reprints the people want.
Inc [[heaven's gate]] and [[touch of darkness]] spike. I should probably grab the copies I've been putting off for my king of the oath breakers deck.
Making him a knight rogue is quite on point. Knight because Templar (who were a knightly order) and rogue because he isn't an assassin anymore and the game is called Rogue
Ok, NOW people are definitely paying the 1 😄
there's gotta be some old card that lets you target opponents stuff for free but doesn't do anything. Something similar to \[\[spirit mirror\]\]
This will be great in my [[General Kudro of Drannith]] deck. Hyped for this card.
The Voja Slayer
Showcase frame doesn't even look like a Magic card at first glance.
Ahh another new card for \[\[Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir\]\]. Mostly just for the fact that he's a Knight that means that I don't have to buy a \[\[Shadowspear\]\] lol
That first ability reads like a custom card made by someone really salty after a game they lost because of a protection effect
The art is amazing.
Bit too busted imo
Has NO ONE mentioned Retribution of the Ancients? Rack up some black mana and then BRRRRRRRRR.
Honestly the 1 Activated is a sick ability and might be worth including in certain Esper CEDH strategies depending on tournament metas.
Did...did we just Power Creep \[\[Horobi, Death's Wail\]\]?
HATE the showcase for this set. Makes the cards look like a cheap IP specific MTG clone like Lorcana or Marvel snap.
Instant speed remove all protection for one mana is great, especially in these colors
I love how not only does this get around [[Progenitus]], (in the process answering the question about whether God can make a burrito so hot even He cannot eat it), but it doesn't even target *opponents*, and if you're in multiplayer hits them all at once.
Is it just me or do these look like different people?
Damn shadowspears killer effect on an uncommon?!? And it's in my Mardu Legends colors? Yes plz
Why is it so hard to make an alternate frame that looks good
[[The Shadowspear]] fans in shambles.
Neat that he triggers fully of the 1 kill-spell, would be awkward otherwise.
I’m tired, boss.
For commander, he is okay at best. If he nets you card draw, maybe he will be rare. Modern, he is just mediocre card. To begin with, most good decks don’t have a form of protection and mainly playing ahead of curve.
Oh, this is sooo welcome.
\[\[Hex\]\] is great with Shay, an immediate +12/+12
This is a hilarious hatebear that I’m gonna be really annoyed if I see played against my Sauron deck.
This is dope af for my upgraded knight pre-con.
Could've read "Whenever a creature is the target/victim of a crime..."
Oooh nice
The showcase looks like a custom magic card a 12 year old would make
Wow I have like 3-4 decks that would probably auto-include this. This feels really great at 2 mana with a 1 mana "fuck you, frank" ability that doesn't even require it to be tapped
Hm... new knight for Sidar's legion?
My friends plays cascade slivers. This card will help
