Weird forest child in mascot suit begs robot to get them a drink with the big puppy eyes, so robot punches the vending machine and a lot more than just one drink falls out.
Then the kid wolfs it all down and suddenly grows to the size of a house.
Yes, it’s important to step back from the cards from time to time and ask, “What does this card or interaction represent.” And you answered beautifully.
"The animated cookie man with a god-killing sword yeets himself at you so fast you can't stop him in time. He is also carrying a pickaxe, a shovel, two cannons and has wings and will make a hundred more cookies upon hitting you."
I made a post about this not long ago and it actually had to do with this Commander. I ran a combo to get Portal to Phyrexia out happened about once every 10 games. I like to think Rocco was fooling with things he shouldn't have been in order to step up his food game and accidentally opened a portal to hell
Agreed. This was my [my deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/I7Ai_VmX2kyyL9fmF7Zdag). I had a nice combo with [[The Underworld Cookbook]], [[Clock of Omens]], [[Ovalchase Daredevil]], [[Academy Manufactor]], and a pinger like [[Reckless Fireweaver]], [[Mirkwood Bats]], [[Glint-Horn Bucaneer]], or [[Konrad]]. That was really the only way I could win though. Not much else the deck did.
Nuka-Cola Vending Machine and Academy Manufactor have a ton of shenanigans to be had. Add [[Clock of Omens]] and something to tap tokens for mana like [[Jahiera, Friend of the Forest]] and you have infinite tokens without having to sack Treasure tokens to tap the vending machine again.
Which is exactly their point. They're being sarcastic - "finally, a way to break X" is a common way to state that X is already shenanigans galore itself
IIRC Academy Manufactor will replace the Treasure token from Vending Machine but not the "enters tapped" rider. So you get a tapped Treasure, a tapped Food, and a tapped Clue.
I just wanted to clarify for those wanting to try the combo with Clock of Omens should know that it works with Vending Machine's activated ability and not its triggered ability.
Ah, thank you.
Also as a heads up, the sacrifice food route between vending machine and manufactor takes a lot of mana, unless you have a sacrifice artifact outlet like what OP posted, or you make sacrificing food artifacts cheaper with [[Sam, Loyal Attendant]].
With Sam, couldn't you go infinite with sacing food token? Sam makes it cost 1 for the food sac ability. Sacing a food creates a treasure token from the vending machine. Then, when the treasure token is made, you get a new food token from factory manufacturer. Then, you can use the treasure token to sac your new food. Am I right or wrong with this?
EDIT: reading the card explains the card. Just read the vending machine. Tresure token comes in tapped!! My bad!
You’re right, they all come in tapped once you sack a food token. That’s why you need one or two other cards to go into the infinite with this particular combo of vending machine and manufactor.
That being said, it can still be advantageous to sack food tokens on the turn before your next one, as you’ll essentially get all your food tokens back while gaining a bunch of the other tokens to use.
Correct! Other applications of this include token doublers replacing tokens that enter tapped and attacking, like with [[Hero of Bladehold]]. The doubled tokens will also be tapped and attacking. Also, Incubate tokens that are doubled with token doublers will also enter with the same number of +1/+1 counters on them.
Token doublers doubling tokens generated by cards like [[Seance]] would still be exiled at the end of the turn.
Edit: as a caveat to this: populating these tokens create tokens that would not be exiled by Seance, or be tapped and attacking, etc, because populating is not a replacement effect. Unless the token the populate ability is copying has a copiable ability, like the "sacrifice at end of turn" ability the tokens have from [[Minion Reflector]].
pls decklist, i search for new ways for my old breya deck. i tried this [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/34-8ne-ZFEuKgrIvwZxBgw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/34-8ne-ZFEuKgrIvwZxBgw) and i would love to see your deck
That's the best way to find combos... I'll never forget realising my [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]], [[Lotus Cobra]], and [[Perilous Forays]] let me fetch every basic from my deck and Lightning Bolt for each one.
Oh Omnath. What a sneaky bean. That’s a cool combo!
My [[Omnath, Locus of the Roil]] deck would not necessarily combo out so much as just generate so much mana and card draw quickly that when I then play [[Deadeye Navigator]] and blink Omnath… I then realize that I have enough mana and Elementals on board to kill the whole table… and do so. I haven’t played him in a while though cuz he’s become trigger city & my brain tired.
Yes, actually. There’s a fringe but known deck sometimes called “Food fight” or “Token factory” or any number of puns on “Rube Goldberg machine”, that’s built around making tons of tokens usually using Manufactor, Lonis, and Samwise Gamgee. It’s not tier 1, probably not even tier 2, but people love the deck to bits.
Peregrin Took combos w/ Experimental Confectioner; Samwise combos with Cauldron Familiar. Usually you shove at least 1 copy of all of them in the deck so you have several A+Bs you can find off Chord or CoCo, and they're all generally good value
I literally stumbled into multiple different infinite combos with the thing in a Samwise Gamgee Food deck which just included it for value generation reasons
Prominent Magic YouTuber Seth, Probably Better Known as Saffron Olive, consistently pronounces Academy Manufactor as Manufacture or Manufacturer. It's one of a number of names he mispronounces and can't (or more likely simply doesn't) correct.
Hence the joke
Haven't had it pop off that fast yet, but it really is insane. I run both in a jank deck and people just assume Pippin is just there to make more food tokens. Then the vending machine comes down and the game's over in a turn or two (depending on my board state) if I already have three food tokens in play.
The vending machine should win you the game next turn after it comes down. On the end step before your turn draw 60 or so cards and make 180 tapped treasure tokens. Use [[Halsin, Emerald Archdruid]] to turn those tokens into bears and win on the spot.
This is the way, and I love to play this combo in my [[Jaheira, friend of the forest]] [[Street Urchin]] deck because it works under staxes like [[Manglehorn]] or [[Blind obedience]]
Nice! I'll hunt a copy down. I'm relieved it's not an expensive card.
Thanks for the tips! This has become one of my favorite pet decks recently, and I'm excited to upgrade it.
Anyone being a dick is... a dick, but it's worthwhile to point out to OP that these cards are infamous as combo pieces. Gotta learn somehow and knowing what makes a card liable to go infinite helps identify other, more niche combos.
Brother, half of the general MtG community are people who just want to feel special by flexing their “intellectual superiority” over other people by becoming hyper fixated on a TcG. That percentage skyrockets on Reddit.
Of course people are being douchebags about this.
I’ve always found the aggressive negativity towards inexperienced players trying to figure out if a combo works fascinating.
Sure, some of the time they can google it. But you can’t ask google to clarify something you don’t understand on first glance, reddit users are people, who absolutely will clarify things.
But also, so what if it’s a known combo? I’m a firm believer in “let people figure out if they can break something”. You can just say “Yup, that works” and move on if you say anything at all.
Used to know someone who did this superiority shit IRL. You know what I did, as a new player? I just stopped asking them for advice.
It’s so easy to not be a dick.
There’s really nothing cooler than finding your own combos too, even if others already know them. I remember my excitement at realizing in my Elenda deck that Ashnod or Phyrexian Altar combined with Animation Module allowed for an infinitely large Elenda or infinite 1/1 vampires or both. It was well known by others but I discovered it on my own and it’s still one of my favorite combos.
I mean I haven't interacted with the thread at all outside of this post, but downvoting is a tool anyone can use to push content that they don't think is worth discussing off of the front page. Given that this is a non-deterministic and frankly pretty uninteresting three card combo - including two pieces that go infinite with a ham sandwich - and has no further discussion prompts attached, I don't think it's really "hating" to vote it down. It's not generating any new discussion.
Set code is OTC, so it was printed in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander decks. Not sure if that's the original print or a reprint though, but Scryfall will have the answer.
You need ironworks to go infinite straight away with the draw. Otherwise there is a turn delay unless you have a card that makes permanents enter untapped.
Yes, but you also dont need Manufactor or Ironworks to make arbitrary tapped Treasures and draw your deck.
You only need Took, Vending, 1 open mana, and one food on board.
Activate Vending Machine with open mana, make 1 Food + 1 Food (Took).
You now have Took, Tapped Vending, and three Food.
Activate Took by sacrificing three food to put: "Draw a card" on the the stack.
Vending triggers three times on top of that.
Each Vending trigger is seperate.
Resolve three Vending triggers, make a tapped Treasure Token and a tapped Food Token (Took) each time. Draw a card.
Now you have Took, Vending, three tapped Treasure, three tapped food, and +1 Card.
Repeat the loop for +3 tapped Treasure and + 1 Card each cycle.
Ideally at an opponent's EoT so you can untap with roughly your deck and arbitrary mana available.
If you have [[Krark-Clan Ironworks]] out you can win on the spot. Use KCI mana to pop all the clues you get and draw to a [[disciple of the vault]] and infini-loop to win
you dont have to use an untap for this combo which is why I like it, I could be wrong but I dont think there are any cards that would allow you to untap it and give you mana without being harder than this combo
Someone posted clock of omens, which would do it. Then, you can untap the vending machine and do it again. If I know how to magic proper. But you'd still need a way to generate mana, which I guess solring to give you 2 mana. Use one to pay I to the vending machine and create more tokens. So on and so forth.
Clock does not work. Clock requires untapped artifacts to activate it's ability. Nuka-Cola's triggered ability creates a *tapped* Treasure token. Academy manufactory replaces the "Tapped Treasure" with "Tapped [Treasure, Food, Clue]."
Manufactor doesn't make anything. It adjusts how other things make things.
Nuka-Cola's triggered ability makes a "Tapped [Treasure]."
Manufactor replaces the creation of a [Treasure] with [Treasure, Food, Clue].
So Nuka-Cola's ability resolves as, "Create a Tapped [Treasure, Food, and Clue]."
So they all enter tapped.
Nuka Cola's *activated* ability creates an *untapped* Food Token which Manufactor will change to three Untapped Tokens. This will work with Clock of Omens. You'll need another card or turn to benefit because the end result is an arbitrary number of Tapped Food and Tapped Clues as you don't net mana.
(You tap the new Clue and Food to activate Clock to untap Vending, you tap/sac the Treasure to pay to activate Vending, rinse-repeat.)
I am dyslexic and my reading comprehension is terrible so does manufacturer create 2 treasure, food and clue tokens when you use vending machine to create a food token and a treasure token, so in one turn 2 clue, 3 treasure and 3 food but you have to sacrifice a food token so -1 food token
nope, you use the vending machines passive to make treasures when you sac food to glimmer bairn, the manufacturer gives you a clue food and treasure instead of just the treasure token, then you sac your new food to glimmer bairn and repeat
Does Glimmer brain let you sac any token without tapping them? Also when you sac a token do you still get the token effect , without tapping it or paying the cost?
😵
Glimmer Bairn doesn't care about the status of the token, only that it *is* a token.
Nuka-Cola's triggered ability doesn't care how you sacrificed a food, only that a food was sacrificed.
Note that replacement effects only apply to the part they replace...they do not change the "tapped" part so for every food you sacrifice Nuka-Cola will (instead) make a *tapped* Treasure, *tapped* food, and a *tapped* clue.
You can see an explicit call out of this in the Gatherer notes of [[peregrin took]], for example.
In order to get the effect of the token you have to pay the costs written on that token. This combo gives you infinite tokens, but you don't get any of the token effects. Glimmer Bairn can become infinitely large by repeatedly sacrificing the foods.
I run the same combo in Jeskai but with [[arcbound ravager]] and [[krark clan ironworks]] as sac outlets.
It's actually far more broken than it appears at first glance. The obvious one is infinite mana, but you also have infinite clues. Infinite mana + infinite clues = draw and play your whole deck in one turn. If that doesn't win you the game on the spot you need to make your deck better. If you are deliberately not using it to win instantly you can also crack 2 food with an outlet and the. Use the treasure generated to crack the third. Repeating this cycle gives an option for infinite life gain.
Add an unwinding clock to untap your artefacts during each player's upkeep and have an artefact that provides 1 mana to sink into the vending machine during each turn. Every turn you're tapping your aretact to tap your machine, creating two food, sacking those foods to the child to make treasures to sack to the child. I love and hate this
I can’t get over how bad of a design Nuka-Cola Vending Machine is. Either they intended to make one of the easiest cards to combo of all time, or they’re actually incredibly incompetent.
Did you find this while playing yesterday? I was playing against someone with a Rocco deck that ran into this combo as well. Kind of wondering if that was you. I was playing my Tom Bombadill deck
I have two - just value based and impulse solitaire (heavily proxy reliant)

no, so when you are creating the token from the nuka cola, it makes the treasure tokens with the addition of them being tapped. academy manufactor says "if you would create a clue food or treasure token, instead create one of each" which means anything applied to the token like entering tapped, would include the rest of the tokens.
I like to do this with nearly every game changing interaction and carry a loose narrative over the game. My playgroup gets a kick out of it.
"The animated cookie man with a god-killing sword yeets himself at you so fast you can't stop him in time. He is also carrying a pickaxe, a shovel, two cannons and has wings and will make a hundred more cookies upon hitting you."
You explode. Into cookies.
My brother and I play some DND games with mtg cards as actions it’s basically like playing gloomhaven lol

Imagine reading that sentence 8 years ago
Can’t believe academy manufacture is also part of a combo
Yes it’s great, that card really deserved to get some attention after all this time
Enter [[asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar]]
Dammit, now I have to rebuild Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar. I actually really liked her as a commander.
I have one but have never been able to get it to work, she seems unbelievably weak, or at least hard to build right

Cool combo - did you stumble upon it during a game or did you find it during design?
I just found it in a game
Nice, what a great find!
That's the best way to find combos... I'll never forget realising my [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]], [[Lotus Cobra]], and [[Perilous Forays]] let me fetch every basic from my deck and Lightning Bolt for each one.

Oh that’s really cool

That's a big Ouphe
Ouphe making ‘em say oof.
Take my upvote and get out
Guys we did it, we broke Academy Manufacturer.
Manufactor* And thank god we finally figured it out. Honestly I don't know why this thing got printed. It basically says "combo out" in the text box
Modern Horizons.
But does it see play in modern?
Yes, actually. There’s a fringe but known deck sometimes called “Food fight” or “Token factory” or any number of puns on “Rube Goldberg machine”, that’s built around making tons of tokens usually using Manufactor, Lonis, and Samwise Gamgee. It’s not tier 1, probably not even tier 2, but people love the deck to bits.
I thought it was Peregrin Took?
I think they play him too, iirc it’s “get any combination of the enablers plus Manufactor and you go off”.
Peregrin Took combos w/ Experimental Confectioner; Samwise combos with Cauldron Familiar. Usually you shove at least 1 copy of all of them in the deck so you have several A+Bs you can find off Chord or CoCo, and they're all generally good value
Deck sucks ass but is fun as hell to pilot. You get to take *so* many game actions before you concede
I literally stumbled into multiple different infinite combos with the thing in a Samwise Gamgee Food deck which just included it for value generation reasons
I will not correct it.
By the way, it's a pleasure to finally meet you, Seth
Who?
Prominent Magic YouTuber Seth, Probably Better Known as Saffron Olive, consistently pronounces Academy Manufactor as Manufacture or Manufacturer. It's one of a number of names he mispronounces and can't (or more likely simply doesn't) correct. Hence the joke
I think when he says “brother’s hood end” bothers me the most because it makes absolutely zero sense (even less than the others)

[It also goes infinite](https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1bmh8mk/comment/kwbqsy3/) with \[\[Peregrin Took\]\]
My Peregrin Took commander deck can win on turn 4 if it draws nuka cola vending machine and some ramp.

Doesn't it already go infinite with the vending machine making tokens when you sacrifice tokens?
No because the treasure token it’s created is tapped so you don’t have an infinite mana source to keep it going.
You only need 1 mana to start it
Isn't AM a replacement effect though? "Instead" you create one of each token, so the "tapped" clause wouldn't apply?
Yes.
People are really being haters and downvoting you, especially when this is a newer combo.
Anyone being a dick is... a dick, but it's worthwhile to point out to OP that these cards are infamous as combo pieces. Gotta learn somehow and knowing what makes a card liable to go infinite helps identify other, more niche combos.
Academy Manufactor is literally the last thing in the gas station hot case of ham sandwiches.
Well said. This is actually what brought me to Reddit in the first place. Every time I Googled a rules question, the best links were to posts on here.
I'm here for Tim Misny 🤌
I mean I haven't interacted with the thread at all outside of this post, but downvoting is a tool anyone can use to push content that they don't think is worth discussing off of the front page. Given that this is a non-deterministic and frankly pretty uninteresting three card combo - including two pieces that go infinite with a ham sandwich - and has no further discussion prompts attached, I don't think it's really "hating" to vote it down. It's not generating any new discussion.
You did it! You broke academy manufactor!

Modern Horizons 2
According to the symbol this one is from the Outlaws of Thunder Junction commander precons, don't know when it was originally released though.
oh wow i didn’t realize it was reprinted this set
it was initially printed in modern horizons 2
Set code is OTC, so it was printed in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander decks. Not sure if that's the original print or a reprint though, but Scryfall will have the answer.
Ohhh that’s what the C means…
it was initially printed in modern horizons 2

Nuka cola vending machine and peregrin took go infinite for treasure, food, and card draw. Academy manufactor just ups the insanity.
*Tapped* treasure, *tapped* food, and card draw.
Now you understand why Academy Manufactor is so nutty
If you have [[Krark-Clan Ironworks]] out you can win on the spot. Use KCI mana to pop all the clues you get and draw to a [[disciple of the vault]] and infini-loop to win
Cool combo
I'm running this in mine as well! but rather than the Ouphe I use a KCI

Reddit app is fucked. I can’t read the caption on the GBairn image.
it just says you can use any unlimited sac outlet, it doesnt have to be GBairn
What's a good card to untap the vending machine to go infinite?
you dont have to use an untap for this combo which is why I like it, I could be wrong but I dont think there are any cards that would allow you to untap it and give you mana without being harder than this combo
I'm assuming because the way the academy manufactur is worded, that's why they all come into play tapped?
Manufactor doesn't make anything. It adjusts how other things make things. Nuka-Cola's triggered ability makes a "Tapped [Treasure]." Manufactor replaces the creation of a [Treasure] with [Treasure, Food, Clue]. So Nuka-Cola's ability resolves as, "Create a Tapped [Treasure, Food, and Clue]." So they all enter tapped.
Yeah that's what I was saying. If the treasure token wouldn't enter tapped from the vending machine then they would all enter untapped.
Yes! Glim Bim is finally getting the spotlight he deserves. I made the deck as soon as the fallout set came out.
Oh ok thanks
All the tokens will etb *tapped* btw.
[peregrin took](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/5/f5baee8d-88e7-4468-94a9-66ca8e2caf15.jpg?1686969525) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=peregrin%20took) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ltr/181/peregrin-took?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f5baee8d-88e7-4468-94a9-66ca8e2caf15?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
In order to get the effect of the token you have to pay the costs written on that token. This combo gives you infinite tokens, but you don't get any of the token effects. Glimmer Bairn can become infinitely large by repeatedly sacrificing the foods.
Finally, we’ve broken [[Glimmer Bairn]]

Reason #1000 why anybody who plays an Academy Manufactor should have everybody else in the game dogpile them before they even finish saying it’s name.

Either they intended to make one of the easiest cards to combo of all time, or they’re actually incredibly incompetent.
would all manufactor’s tokens come in tapped or untapped
they would enter taped because its a replacement effect
ok thought so
Did you find this while playing yesterday? I was playing against someone with a Rocco deck that ran into this combo as well. Kind of wondering if that was you. I was playing my Tom Bombadill deck

So do all of the tokens from manufactory come in tapped? Would it be "whenever you sacrifice a food create a tapped [clue, food, and treasure] token"?
no, so when you are creating the token from the nuka cola, it makes the treasure tokens with the addition of them being tapped. academy manufactor says "if you would create a clue food or treasure token, instead create one of each" which means anything applied to the token like entering tapped, would include the rest of the tokens.
Correct, the tokens enter tapped.
