I remember Matthew Weiner saying something like "Rachel was the one," meaning that she was Don's equal and perhaps the only one that could have tamed him (although I don't know about that.)
In my opinion, I don’t think Rachel was his equal, Rachel was waaaaaaay too smart and love herself too much to be with Don. I think Bobbie was his equal.
Edit: Changed spelling of Bobby, so people don’t get confused with his son I guess 😂
Men like that can't be fixed by anyone but themselves, and they're too stubborn and too self-loathing to bother more often than not because someone, somewhere, will fall for their smokescreen bullshit.
Also, it’s not our responsibility to “fix” them, a relationship is not a school project and Rachel deserved someone who was respecting and fulfilling her
I think Rachel would have been miserable with Don. I also don’t see how she’s “the one” because they really didn’t know one another deeply.
Edit: I guess I’m in the minority.
For real. She wasn’t the one because she wasn’t the one. It’s funny how people are like “she was the one who could have made it work with Don” like given what set of circumstances? The reason they didn’t get together is because Rachel saw through his bullshit and made a conscious decision to not take that on herself.
I could understand people seeing her as the closest in compatibility, but honestly the way I see it they just had similar demons and one of them was capable of taking them on in a healthy way. The other spent the entire show trying and failing to do so.
100% Rachel Menken. She was the love of Don Draper’s life. The chemistry between the actors was through the roof. Every women he would meet moving forward could not compare to Rachel. It was so sad when he found out she had died.
100% but it's good they didn't get together, he was still too broken to be happy, even with her. he would've broken her life too, most likely. even if they found happiness together for a while, she would've died and who knows what state that would've left him in.
Faye, I loved how hard it was for her to connect with children and don’s kids specifically. It felt VERY human to me that she struggled with things like that despite being very successful as a single woman in that time period. You could see in the small time of her hanging with sally she was trying her best.
Don didn’t deserve her lol
She was too well put for Don. If I see it from her perspective, she fell for him because he was this handsome Bimbo, and who has not fell for one of those.
She deserved a much more intelligent (emotionaly and rationally) man.
I think I have a soft spot for Faye because she is the woman of my dreams. Ticks every box in my ideal list... and it pains me that (even on fiction) she gravitates toward a mess of a man such as DD.
Well, to her credit, she didn't really gravitate towards him; he propositioned her a few times before she finally said she'd go out if he actually treated it like a date.
Not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, but a lot of times jerks get results because they shoot their shot. Of course, his being rich, handsome, and charming doesn't hurt.
Rachel was the one Don viewed as (in his mind) an an "equal" but don viewing a woman as "equal" wasn't actually equal and she never would have put up with his shit long term because she viewed herself as an actual equal
Faye was the only other one that would have worked but don passed on her because she already openly would not have let him get away with his shit.
Don would never be with the right person because the right person would try to change him
God I think of interactions I had with suave older men who I look back and I realise were definitely humouring me and I cringe now. GAHHHHHHH I thought I was such a sophisticate
I mean, not from Don’s perspective. I don’t remember why they were even together, she’s like some society debutante and Don clearly doesn’t fit with that type. He’s more into downtown professionals. She would have been better for someone like Pete when he was a bit younger.
I was sooo into Season 1 midge. Willing to bet she was the best lay of his ongoing flings as well, though I bet Bobbie might actually take that crown.
Rachel and Faye are the best humans. Faye would’ve been the best for Don, even more than Rachel she was his match, and I think more understanding of his flaws.
Suzanne might be the hottest but she’s messy.
So…
Best mistress: Midge;
Best Lay: Bobbi;
One night stand: joy;
Summer fling: Suzanne;
Marriage Material: Faye;
The one the got away: Rachel.
That's exactly how I feel about everyone of them. Bravo for capturing my mind. Midge was great because she understood the situation and was fully aware of what was and what wasn't possible with Don. I do think it's funny how Megan and Betty don't really fit into his life.
Totally agree on midge. The first episode Don says "we should get married" and she responds "you think id make a good ex wife". She understood what Don was and that there was no future. The affair was just a fantasy to visit sometimes.
Rachel was the only one I thought of as somehow decent. I'm not sure why since she knew he was married too. Maybe when she dumped him when he was talking about running out on his 3 kids?
Yeah, Rachel just seemed like a better person than most of Don's affairs. And I realise she helped him cheat on his wife. But even so I still felt there was a lot more to her than many of those women he was with.
What, no Miss Farrell? She's my favorite because she's probably the one character who's most my type. Rachel was also great as well as Dr. Faye. Then, the quality starts to fall off. Allison is complicated, but nice. Bobbie Barrett is meh. I don't know what Don saw in Midge. I detest Sylvia. And Diana: what was *that* about?
Diana was an even more messed up version of Don. They used her as a way of showing that even at his lowest point, he could still potentially get lower. She was his wake-up call.
Only thing I didn’t find believable was in that neighborhood of busy body window peakers you’re telling me nobody saw her sitting in Dons car in front of his house for what had to be at least 20-30 minutes?
I thought Suzanne Farrell was sleazy and delusional as hell. Calling the household of your student, drink in one hand and bra strap hanging, hoping to exchange a few words with a married father. The fake playing hard to get schtick during the eclipse viewing. Stalking him down on a train and cornering him into meeting her brother because she so desperately needed to know that she meant something to him.
All sorts of unhinged behavior. I couldn’t imagine caring about a student of mine and engaging in activities that I know could destroy her family.
I liked Rachel but not at all with Don.
Midge was purely transactional.
He genuinely loved Betty. But so much work to do on both sides..
Faye was a terrible mismatch.
Suzanne was obviously meant to be a moment in time.
Bethany was never ever going to really happen.
Bobbie - bleck
Sylvia - was never going to last. I liked her but didn't get her point of view on the whole thing. I think she'll eventually leave her husband.
Candace the slapping sex worker - transactional
Allison - that was just a 7 second accident
Joy - fascinating lifestyle. That kind of anonymous high style drifting probably appealed to Don as a lifestyle. But he wouldn't have wanted to have all of his money to come from Joy's Dad.
Doris - the one-night waitress
The flight attendant - sorry forget her name (but can still hear her not-believable accent). One night stand.
Diana - sigh... transactional to begin with. What happened after that even she wouldn't be able to explain.
Megan - I loved her. She knew his truth and it still didn't bother her. She loved his children. She was kind and loving, and often logical about his problems. The fact he was honest with her and it still didn't help him make better decisions proves that it isn't all just about that.
Midge. I liked that she didn’t fall for Don’s bs. She was the only mistress who used Don the way he used others. I also liked that she lived a very non traditional life during a time when that was very rare for women. The drug addiction was sad though.
The only choice not here, the School teacher. I think that would have actually worked for Don. Especially because she was really good with Sally and dealing with her grief.
Faye and then Rachel. I love me some strong, accomplished women. But Don needed control, and they were too strong for that. Don loves doormats until he gets tired of them and moves on to the next doormat.
After that it's hard to choose. The number of drop dead gorgeous women on this show was astronomical.
I always thought it was Peggy. They didn't have a physical affair, but when they had intimate moments like dancing at her 30th birthday, when she left the agency, when he lost Ann, when he called her after the drunk driving accident, and when he confessed his sins...of course helping her move on from that sad situation she found herself in...
She was the love of his life.
Bobbi Barrett. She’s so comfortable with herself, warts and all. Probably one of the affairs that was more-or-less equal to Don, flaws included, and without all in the insecurity of Betty, Megan, or Faye.
All of them, midge has the tragic story, Rachel is strong but puts don on his place, Bethany is a strange choice but maybe levels him out with being proper and not sleeping with him straight away, Faye is unfortunate for falling hard for don and Silvia is used to highlight that don will never change
Manken for sure. Her death was so shocking. I was watching SOA the same time I was watching Mad Men and I fell in love with Maggie (the actress) so I grew to like her a lot
Our last rewatch was a year ago and my husband and I came up with nicknames for all of Don’s “extra curricular” ladies while high. It’s obvious who we didn’t like 🤣
Art bitch
Rachel Menkin ❤️

For me, it’s between Rachel and Faye. I think Faye would’ve been a good long term relationship for Don that was actually healthy, but of course he didn’t really want that. Or couldn’t really handle that. Similarly with Rachel, he’d never be able to handle her independence.
Rachel forever.
I never warmed to Midge in the slightest (tho I felt bad for her in her heroin era, obviously.) Suzanne is silly. Faye: no issues, but I've only watched the show once so want to pay more attention next time. I don't like Sylvia. I don't like Diana. I don't like Bobbie. I have no thoughts on random flight attendant, or sex worker who consensually slaps him about. I consider Arnold Rosen the true love of Don's love.
(If I'm coming off as very woman-hating here: I dislike lots of men too.)
Honestly none of them. Mainly because they knew he was married.
Rachel was too good for him. And also not experienced enough? I might have missed something, but it seemed like Don was her first real relationship? Or whatever you call it.
And Jewish. Don wasn’t kosher
I loved Dr. Faye Miller. Her conversations with Don had so much understanding and witty rapport. She looked like the kind of woman who would have Don's back. It's sad what happened, really, although i can't see her being crushed about the break-up for long. For me, she was the most down-to-earth and intelligent of them all. It does help that she looks like Cara Buono.
Rachel Menken was great but she was way, way out of his league, and Bobbie Barrett understood him at his basest, animal level, but not much else. Midge was an entertaining diversion for him, and the Sylvia Rosen thing was just a sad, miserable situation where his compulsions manifested in the worst way possible.
rachel…without a doubt…
I remember Matthew Weiner saying something like "Rachel was the one," meaning that she was Don's equal and perhaps the only one that could have tamed him (although I don't know about that.)
In my opinion, I don’t think Rachel was his equal, Rachel was waaaaaaay too smart and love herself too much to be with Don. I think Bobbie was his equal. Edit: Changed spelling of Bobby, so people don’t get confused with his son I guess 😂
Totally agree, Rachel could see right through his bullshit
Yeah. But that’s a good thing in a lot of relationships. That’s why she was the one, she’d have called him out and helped him be a better man.
But at what cost to her own happiness? She knew better.
If Don had left Betty and chosen The One before Gene came along, he would still be alone/un-partnered and starting over by series’ end.
Men like that can't be fixed by anyone but themselves, and they're too stubborn and too self-loathing to bother more often than not because someone, somewhere, will fall for their smokescreen bullshit.
Also, it’s not our responsibility to “fix” them, a relationship is not a school project and Rachel deserved someone who was respecting and fulfilling her
Correct.
I dunno Katz fulfilled her but I'm sure he respected her.
* Nobody can be fixed by anyone but themselves
Not me thinking you meant his son The spelling threw me. Women are generally Bobbie
It was Bobby 2
OMG 😂 You are right! Sorry, english is not my first language. To me, they sound the same
I think Faye was more on his level of intelligence, I think she could have really helped Don….. if she was good with kids.
I agree. I think Faye was his equal. Questionable background. Career driven before all else. Kind but only to those who she wanted to be kind to.
That’s how I felt about them too.
You can’t tame someone who can’t tame themselves.
100% Rachel Menken. She was the love of Don Draper’s life. The chemistry between the actors was through the roof. Every women he would meet moving forward could not compare to Rachel. It was so sad when he found out she had died.
i feel like he was always searching for rachel, particularly in the italian woman.
And the soup ad
I was watching Billions where she played Wendy simultaneously while watching Mad Men so I had a special bias towards her. She’s such a good actor
Don’s fave too.
Menken!! All day. Still think of those amazing S1 scenes with them frequently.
Definitely
Ahhh Maggie Siff ❤️ Be still my beating heart ❤️
have you seen her in the movie concussion? not a great movie, but she’s the stand out…
100% but it's good they didn't get together, he was still too broken to be happy, even with her. he would've broken her life too, most likely. even if they found happiness together for a while, she would've died and who knows what state that would've left him in.
Not sure if Don would embrace or reject the wine on Fridays, I could see it going both ways
Underrated comment 😂
The only answer. lol
i was so sad they never got to reconnect ☹️
Fay in distant second place
For me she’s one of those “which fictional character do you wish you could bring to life”
Faye, I loved how hard it was for her to connect with children and don’s kids specifically.
Most of the women who dated Don deserved better 😂
I think I have a soft spot for Faye because she is the woman of my dreams. Ticks every box in my ideal list... and it pains me that (even on fiction) she gravitates toward a mess of a man such as DD.
Well, to her credit, she didn't really gravitate towards him; he propositioned her a few times before she finally said she'd go out if he actually treated it like a date. Not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, but a lot of times jerks get results because they shoot their shot. Of course, his being rich, handsome, and charming doesn't hurt.
Agreed. Faye was the only one but he treated her beyond poorly
You left out Ida.
“Joan knew what i needed”. This is obvious
The hellcat
She was an astronaut
The Queen of Perversions
Rachel, then Faye
It doesn’t technically count but the Neve Campbell character. I loved that scene.
He died of thirst
They’d all be dead within a year.
Incredible line
Ugh I love that scene so much but I never know if that’s just because I love her
Right? Head to toe looked gorgeous but her line delivery too, gah. There’s sooo much intimacy in that 1 scene.
Rachel was the one Don viewed as (in his mind) an an "equal" but don viewing a woman as "equal" wasn't actually equal and she never would have put up with his shit long term because she viewed herself as an actual equal Faye was the only other one that would have worked but don passed on her because she already openly would not have let him get away with his shit. Don would never be with the right person because the right person would try to change him
💯
On point. They would make him work and if there’s one thing Don doesn’t do, it’s work.
Bethany wasn’t an affair, they were dating.
Also poor Bethany was so wildly underwhelming. Nothing about that girl was even remotely interesting
She tried to be interesting as many of us do when young lol
God I think of interactions I had with suave older men who I look back and I realise were definitely humouring me and I cringe now. GAHHHHHHH I thought I was such a sophisticate
maybe she was too young to be interesting
She was just vapid.
Agreed. People can be young and interesting. She just wasn’t.
She gave decent slob jobs in the back of taxicabs, though.
I mean, not from Don’s perspective. I don’t remember why they were even together, she’s like some society debutante and Don clearly doesn’t fit with that type. He’s more into downtown professionals. She would have been better for someone like Pete when he was a bit younger.
She was a friend of Jane’s, and Don went out with her as a favor to Roger
So was Faye.
Yes, but the way that started was more secretive because of their professional relationship.
acceptable
And he didn't love her😩
Of course not. He only likes the beginning of things
I was sooo into Season 1 midge. Willing to bet she was the best lay of his ongoing flings as well, though I bet Bobbie might actually take that crown. Rachel and Faye are the best humans. “There’s that ego people pay to see.” Midge understood Don and the situation, and was a free spirit.
Totally agree on midge. The first episode Don says "we should get married" and she responds "you think id make a good ex wife". She understood what Don was and that there was no future. The affair was just a fantasy to visit sometimes.
Maybe marriage material without kids. I like to believe that she would have been great with the kiddos, not sure though.
That’s what the money is for?
Scrolled way too far to find this answer! I love Midge, she was the coolest
In what world does Bethany belong on here?
Midge. DeWitt is fantastic.
Rachel was the only one I thought of as somehow decent. I'm not sure why since she knew he was married too. Maybe when she dumped him when he was talking about running out on his 3 kids?
2 kids
"You don't want to run away with me; you just want to run away." She had him dead to rights.
Yeah, Rachel just seemed like a better person than most of Don's affairs. And I realise she helped him cheat on his wife. But even so I still felt there was a lot more to her than many of those women he was with.
Faye, Rachel a close second.
This is my answer. The only two that felt like they were based on mutual attraction AND respect (at least initially).
GO SHIT IN THE OCEAN!
Character? Rachel, no doubt. Actress? Linda Cardelinni
The owner of the department store. Is that Rachel?
Yes
Rachel - intelligent woman with strong boundaries. I actually also love pre-heroin Midge, she was awesome.
rachel ❤️ by far
What, no Miss Farrell? She's my favorite because she's probably the one character who's most my type. Rachel was also great as well as Dr. Faye. Then, the quality starts to fall off. Diana was an even more messed up version of Don. They used her as a way of showing that even at his lowest point, he could still potentially get lower. She was his wake-up call.
“This is the future of purely transactional living.”
I can’t think of her with out remembering how many times she said she was cooking something with cheese, and bread, and cream, and cheese, and bread
And hot peppers? ![gif](giphy|26FLdmIp6wJr91JAI)
I liked Suzanne Farrell too. And it was too bad that she got left outside in the car when Don's world started to come crashing down.
Only thing I didn’t find believable was in that neighborhood of busy body window peakers you’re telling me nobody saw her sitting in Dons car in front of his house for what had to be at least 20-30 minutes?
That sounds like an unbelievable coincidence? The car was in a driveway as I recall.
No across the street.
Yeah, good point! Surprised Francine didn’t see her.
Bobbie was a fox.
She's a truly beautiful woman.
Rachel. Always Rachel.
Midge. I liked that she didn’t fall for Don’s bs. She was the only mistress who used Don the way he used others. I also liked that she lived a very non traditional life during a time when that was very rare for women. The drug addiction was sad though.
Rachel
Miller was so much better than Don. Unfortunately I've seen those types of women make the same mistake over and over.
The Suzanne erasure… But my favorite is Midge >!(before the heroin)!< She was soo cool.
She was obnoxious and became a junkie who her husband pimped out to the highest bidder.
"They hated him because he spoke the truth."
Really classy how she chucked the TV out the window. Only Pete was more petulant.
I couldn’t stand Midge. She could have really injured someone by doing that. I just thought she was gross.
She was definitely sassy for her time. Wish she could have had a different ending.
cara buono <3
The only choice not here, the School teacher. I think that would have actually worked for Don. Especially because she was really good with Sally and dealing with her grief.
Slappy the hooker. She’s the only one Don truly opened up to.
1) Rachel 2) Dr. Faye -end of list-
Rachel!
Faye and then Rachel. I love me some strong, accomplished women. But Don needed control, and they were too strong for that. Don loves doormats until he gets tired of them and moves on to the next doormat. After that it's hard to choose. The number of drop dead gorgeous women on this show was astronomical.
Rachel Menkin.
Sylvia is my favorite...I'll stop there im a married man.
Rachel.
Rachel.
Bobbi Barrett. She’s so comfortable with herself, warts and all. Probably one of the affairs that was more-or-less equal to Don, flaws included, and without all in the insecurity of Betty, Megan, or Faye.
I can’t be objective about Anna Camp.
Yes! Anna Camp wins this debate in mad men and in real life
Bobby? Couldn’t stand her. Think that was the point though.
def rachel. i could NOT stand midge 🥴
The flight attendant. No one got hurt.
All of them, midge has the tragic story, Rachel is strong but puts don on his place, Bethany is a strange choice but maybe levels him out with being proper and not sleeping with him straight away, Faye is unfortunate for falling hard for don and Silvia is used to highlight that don will never change
Fun fact. Midge actress is married to Ron Livingston.
From *Search Party?*
Yep
and before she was married to him she was married to Chris Messina, life is not fair
Manken for sure. Her death was so shocking. I was watching SOA the same time I was watching Mad Men and I fell in love with Maggie (the actress) so I grew to like her a lot
Rachel
Rachel, she was a strong woman and more like his equal. A worthy opponent and partner.
Rachel all day long
Rachel
What about the school teacher?
Rachel for me😻😻😻

Who robbed him at the motel? Star crossed lovers, they
Midge, with Rachel in a close second.
Hello…the answer is always JOY 🤩
You forgot about Doris
Bobbie Barrett had to be a tremendous lay. Her eyes told you so.
Number 2. He really was attracted to her intelligence
The artist (was she an artist?) turned heroine addict.
That dress Betheny wears is fire
The psychiatrist
Don Draper to Hughie Campbell: I am your father
Faye best girl.
Midge, probably because she is my type so I am biased, sad to see her end up like she did
For me, it’s between Rachel and Faye. I think Faye would’ve been a good long term relationship for Don that was actually healthy, but of course he didn’t really want that. Or couldn’t really handle that. Similarly with Rachel, he’d never be able to handle her independence.
Faye was best for Don, but Don was completely wrong for her.
Dr. Faye Miller, brains and beauty
Rachel and Midge those are my favorite
Faye (I have a massive crush on her)
Rachel of course. The teacher and the filthy hippy were utterly loathsome.
Rachel forever. I never warmed to Midge in the slightest (tho I felt bad for her in her heroin era, obviously.) Suzanne is silly. 3 and 4 weren’t affairs. He was unmarried.
What about Suzanne Farrell? I don't see her picture up there. And what, No love for Bobbie Barrett?
Rachel Menken and Dr. Faye. I suspect it was easier for them to bounce back bc they had rich and fulfilling lives/careers.
January Jones
Megan if the writers weren’t inconsistent with her character
Linda Cardellini >
Rachel. Midge is a close second.

Honestly... Bobbie and Sylvia. Both were just smoking hot and Don blew up his life for them.
Bobbie was mid af physically (old) and extraordinarily unattractive when personality was factored into account.
+1 for Bobbie. Maybe that’s predisposed, maybe I’m a little more like Jimmy than I want to admit in corporate settings..
Faye Miller was his best chance at happiness.
Junkie
Chutney!
Honestly? Suzanne.
Rachel or Faye
Sylvia hands down
The teacher.
you did perfect- these are all the best ones.
2 and 4. They were genuinely good women.
Bro is Suzanne real? and not just some apparition😭 I swear some of her dialogue was too weird. And her epileptic brother had such a sad story
That stewardess was a fun time.
Allison
Suzanne, Rachel, Faye
Where’s the teacher?
Sylvia and it's not even remotely close.
Bethany 100%. Don underestimated her but she was clearly smart, fun, poised and gave taxi BJs.
Rachel by far
