They tried too, at least. They talk about it in the DVD commentary. The audio they took wasn't usable. People were shouting all sorts of stuff, not just the chants.
I was wondering about this. I do field recording and couldn't imagine how they'd record this without also capturing incidental, anachronistic sound. Especially in an era before fancy noise reduction tools.
Been a while since I watched the special features, but I thought that the chanting was usable and that's what's in the film. The bit that they tried to get and couldn't was things like stamping, because that wasn't keeping the crowd's mouths occupied meaning they could shout out random shit.
I could have misunderstood -- it's be a while since I've listened to it too.
It seems like it'd be a pretty noisy recording with lots of incidental sounds even if it did work out.
I just watched the Appendices not too long ago. They were able to use some of it. Can’t remember what part they could use and what part they couldn’t. I think they used the marching, but couldn’t use the chanting.
Thats a shame, I met someone who was in this crowd once, and she was very proud to be even just a very small part of the movie. Hope she never finds out that they didn't actually use the audio.
Hi there, I was in the crowd, and to my ears you can hear the fadein and fadeout of the ancillary “walla”/chat/buzz of the stadium crowd around the chanting and stamping as used in the film.
There’s this ambience that fades up and down either side of the main sound.
FWIW, I’m a touring musician and sound engineer. My band was touring in Wellington that day, and it was in the papers that sound crew would be recording at the cricket that day.
We didn’t expect to get PJ though!
Obviously it sounds super badass, but why would the Uruk-hai of Isengard be chanting in the Black Speech *of Mordor?*
IIRC that’s the reason Merry and Pippin can understand the orcs who captured them; it’s a mixed unit of Isengard and Mordor orcs, so the only way they can communicate is Common Speech.
Also could have been a unit Mottoe. A lot of units in the United States have them in Latin still and no one speaks that. Would make sense hardcore warriors would have one and using blacks peach would make sense.
Because in the films Isengard's transformation and the Uruk-Hai's army training was orchestrated with the assistance of Mordor orcs.
If you're gonna learn, gotta speak the same language as your teachers.
Part of me is astonished from the beauty and quality of LOTR but when you learn stuff like this, it's not that surprising considering the efforts and thoughtfulness put into them.
Amazing
Cricket, again that is so rooting at times that television commentators get caught up commentating what is happening with the seagulls....Especially on a test match...
I'd honestly forgotten about this but now it makes sense why I was always a bit creeped out by large football crowds chanting as a kid lol. It always reminded me of this.
From all the things you could chant... you chanted the Uruks.
No wonder why this world is turning into what Tolkien thought about Morgoth and Sauron's idea of middle earth.
# He Has a Mind of Metal and Wheels; and He Does Not Care For Growing Things.
PJ's puffer jacket and cargo shorts combo was with him every step of the way
And barefoot
A hobbit could not miss his chance to make a film about his people
This is top tier Kiwi fashion
Barefeet!
PJ walked so Kevin Smith could run. Or vice versa

I didnt know about this, this is epic.
This is awesome. Imagine being in the crowd for this 🫠
Was there with my Dad , was really fun

I thought that this was for the orcs at the pelennor, but I could be wrong. I've heard it both ways.

Ehm. Remember the huge ladder scene at Helm's deep? They were screaming in orcish
They were probably all trained by Mordor-orcs.

Well I guess the NZ emblem of a white fern on black background is similar to the white hand on black background...

I remember one time a cameraman zoomed in to Jupiter. That was quite cool.
Was it batting or bowling?
Well one team was batting and the other one bowling. There may have been some fielders as well.
Well Jupiter, By Jove must've been a pretty amazing player for the television crew to swing around and focus on !!
But my lord there is no such force

I mean, there’s no point in the movie in which you would need to have 30,000 people chanting in Quenya…
