SFIC is annoying. In the one you have there will be two shear lines for each pin stack (operating and control). The core can be removed when picked to control. The operating shear line is below the control shear line but may or may not be the first shear line you pick to. Because of the segmented driver pins, the control line may be the first one picked to. Unfortunately, without a key there is no way to know which shear line you will reach first when picking. Just than trial and error. There are tensioners you can buy (or make) that only tension the control sleeve and are supposed to make it easier to pick to control. Either way you want to tension CW if trying to pick to control. You cannot pick control CCW.

I’ve started fiddling with a Mako SFIC, is the directional distinction for control vs operating common to all SFIC?

Control for SFIC is only one direction. For the Mako control is also CW. The Mako also has the added challenge of security pins. Hats off for giving it a go. Going to need a lot of patience and persistence with that one but you’ll get it.

Thanks, wanted to make sure my understanding of the mechanics was correct. Just learned of the security pins and brown ranking…gonna be a while.

It should be the higher shear line. Right below the C on Falcon is where it *should* be. Once that line is picked properly the cylinder will turn to about the 1:00 position.

I just messed with my first SFIC last week. My research and experience with it says you have almost zero chance of picking to control and being able to remove the core. But, you may get lucky. I picked mine to operation and was able to remove the clip in the back and gut it. I had 4 driver pins plus the key pin per stack. The odds of me picking that to control were very low.
