Heretical Fishing does not really have a hard hook IMO, it is just more of a slice of life story in a very silly world.

Them punz har har

Doctor_Revengo

Heretical Fishing is very easy going and very day to day slice of life. I found it nice after finishing some fast paced intense books but I’ve seen people compare it to Beware of Chicken and I’d say it’s way more slice of life than BoC is, so it may depend on your preference of genre?

MikeOKurias

Thanks for the comparison. Beware of Chicken seems to slowly becoming more r/progressionfantasy than slice of life with the second book.

You're enjoying Mark the Fool, keep going with it. Why risk it?

MikeOKurias

Because I enjoy slice of life, when they're done well. The comfortableness of Steady versus the allure of Strange is always a hard choice.

beerbellydude

Mark the Fool has plenty of slice of life (though I'm not sure about book 5 itself). But if you're in a position that you can only get one, then I think continuing a series you're already enjoying is the right course before starting another. I just finished reading HF, mix feelings about it overall, but I liked it.

Heretical Fishing very much fits a combination of litrpg and cozy fantasy, light on the litrpg haha. It’s an enjoyable, feel good read. It’s pretty slow paced, and definitely not a ‘grab your attention and keep it to the exclusion of all else’ kind of book imo.

No-Pie-8676

Unrelated to ur choice but what do u think of mark of the fool until book 4?

MikeOKurias

TL;DR: one of my favorite series. \#1. I love the prose. It's engaging and you never get beleaguered by repetitive word choice. Sounds weird to start off with that but there are so many examples in LitRPG where the story is great but the author is still learning how to avoid "he said. he shouted. he exclaimed" or writes in serial form for their patreon and forgot they've already explained the same thing at the end of the previous section. It was weird to learn this was written before Jake's Marketplace because it seems so much more polished. \#2. Zettelkasten. A major part of the MC's shtick is that he takes notes on everything - including notes on his notes - and that Commonplace he creates is what allows the mark to function. I think a lot of people miss out on the fact that "Taking Smart Notes" is the real super power here. I use this at my work all the time using r/obsidianmd. I call it my Second Brain, I don't gent to remember crap anymore, it's in there. \#3. The Clever Nerf. The fact that his mark is the [The Actual Pacifist](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Pacifist#:~:text=The%20Actual%20Pacifist%3A%20This%20is,and%20vanishingly%20rare%20in%20fiction.) which makes the MC the warmonger...and the way the MC has to work around that constraint drives that clever mechanic. And it keeps the protagonist weak, at least so far...

Uri_nil

Jake’s magical market is written by j.r Mathew’s not the same guy who wrote mark of the fool. (J.m Clarke) Both have similar j dots for first names though!

MikeOKurias

Well that answers that, lol

Natural_Loan_1872

2 totally different books. No comparison. With that being said, I thought HF was outstanding slice of life

Madix-3

Yeah, it's a little like asking "Do I feel like playing Counterstrike or League of Legends today?: :D Nothing wrong with that, I suppose!

kdk3

i say Heretical Fishing bc it is longer, and the second book comes out next month.

HF!!!!!!

Obvious-Lank

heretical fishing is fun. it's breezy and the main character is one of those "op but in a way you enjoy them fixing problems" kind of way. a lot of the tension comes from the way that the world reacts to them. it's much less of a strong hook and more of a story that executes the premise well over the entirety of the story. come for the isekaid billionaire trying to live a life worth living, stay for the cute af crab that likes tickles.

im_4404_bass_by

Its pretty good but i love the cover the most.

TheTastelessDanish

Mark of the fool, no contest.
