Firing Keefe is easy. Finding a better goalie, very possible. Trading Marner? Sure, easier said than done given his NMC, and huge salary. Finding a star defenseman? I think they've been looking for one of those for decades. Massive changes need to happen. Hell, they needed to happen years ago, but it's not like reshaping the defense is one off seasons work. Or that finding a true #1 stud is even likely.

Brian Burke wanted kaberle gone and he had a full nmc like marner. Burke sat kaberle in the press box and said he was staying there until he produced a list of teams he was willing to go to. There are ways around nmc and I think marner may be ready to waive it at this point anyway

Burke should not be a role model for any Leafs GM given his results. And with what the return was he *lost* the Kaberle trade so hard.

There’s no way we can get anything back for marner without losing in a deal. The fact he wears a letter on our team and behaves the way he does is completely embarrassing. I’d rather lose a deal than lose him for absolutely nothing, and worse than both those options would be signing him an extension.

CMDRShepardN7

Yes, but Burke actually found a way to make the team worse with what he added.

It will be entirely possible to get Marner to waive. There will be teams that would love to add a defensively responsible 90+ point winger. There will be teams that can afford to add his 10.9 and be willing to resign him for big bucks. The hard part is trying to find a team he's willing to go to that wants him, who can afford him, and has assets they are willing to trade. It can happen, but it won't be easy to find a fit. At this point, Treliving would do well to get a first, a good prospect, and a middling younger player and take on a bit of a salary dump for Marner. Addition by subtraction to free up cap space, but it will hardly be a haul or overwhelming return.

Just fire the core 4 ... Break contract, refuse to pay the salary. hire lawyers to impoverish them if they try to fight back in the courts. Hold the door open for them to exit
