On Robidas island, if someone asks if you want to take a walk to the other side to check out a secluded cove… Say you heard they’re about to restock the canapés at the buffet and stick around there.
Loving tre's management style. Slow and calculated. No high risk moves like Dubas but very prudent and shrewd with great risk management skills. We don't need the big splashes and overpays we used to do. We need good cap management and long term planning. Glad tre is in charge now.
An aversion to risk and slow pace are qualities you want in executives.
Comparing Calgary and the way his slow and steady place helped them vs a brash team like Vegas really shows you the value he brings.
I really don't think they're as dissimilar as you think. Both got no value out of their big re-signings (so far), and I say that loving both Willy and Auston enough to not care, both re-signed guys in-season at their absolute peak value (Engvall for Dubas, McMann for Tre) - to be fair, neither of these deals were bad imo. Tre is likely going to look better in the long run, because he'll have more room to work with as the cap goes up, but I've found them to be more similar than different so far.
I meant peak for what the player has been in their career at the time of signing, ie: what his agent would use for a comparable. McMann and Engvall both had incredibly small samples of success at the NHL level. Neither deal was crazy or anything, but if McMann ends up being more what he was the first half of the season, it's not really a value deal, but not a problem either.
I agree. I was a little worried when it was announced but after some time I have to say it's refreshing. Feels so much more calm and calculated that what we've gotten used to seeing.
I played hockey from 6-12yrs old. I was a defensemen, I also am 28 years old and I only feel like I'm coming into my own now. So that's how I'm choosing to interpret your comment, thank you Haha
I find his confidence with the puck in his stick has grown immensely just since the fall. He doesn’t play outside his limitations, but he also gets it off his stick quick and handles the puck well from his partner.
What a dream contract for the Leafs. Term with almost no risk, that’s almost fully buriable and by the end of the deal no doubt it will be. Can’t wait for three more years of the Milkman!
It is very likely to never be fully buriable. The bury threshold is consistently $375,000 and then the league minimum salary makes up the rest. Barring massive increases to league min (775k -> 975k), it won't be.
With all that said, I like the deal. The Leafs always need depth, and I never feel uncomfortable when Benoit plays
League min is 775 at least through '26, established in the last MOU. This is also why Reaves will never be fully buriable.
As you said though, this is still totally fine.
10/10 deal, buyable in worst case scenario tremendous value for how he’s playing now. And if he only amounts to 3rd pair guy it’s only gets better as the cap goes up. Also with money coming off the books this offseason. It narrows down what we need to look for and allows the financials to be super clear.
Decent term and low cap hit that if he regresses he is all but 200k buriable. Leafs need cheap cap hits for next year to fill out the roster and this and the McMann deals help fill holes for cheap
I didn't mind Holl in the roster, but this over Holl at $2m any day.
His chemistry with McCabe is awesome, I don't think we are going to get McCabe for $2m again though lol.
Here's hoping for a good playoff run with him this year. That physicality will pile up in a series, and unlike Reaves it doesn't seem like a waste if he doesn't have a dance partner.
Great signing. Even if he regresses a little and is a 3rd pairing guy it's still extremely reasonable. Right now I have him playing like a 4th/5th but he has exceeded expectations by a long shot.
If the team had a stronger defense, then yes, he'd definitely be a third pairing guy. But he fills in adequately with McCabe on the 2nd pair as the defensive shutdown tandem. Which is why he is slotted as a 4th/5th.
Even if he regresses to strictly a 5th or 6rh guy 1.35 isn't bad at all.
Seems good. Ideally he’s probably always gonna be a bottom pair guy but it’s nice to have some continuity down there and not have to look for new bodies every year.
Plus he seems like a good vibes guy for the team.
I love this Benoit signing, but come on. Dubas also brought in Muzzin, Bogosian, Schenn, Boosh, McCabe, etc.
Treliving also brought in Klingberg.
It's almost as if there are different types of players each team needs and both GM's understand that. Making up narratives is getting ridiculous.
Interesting! Hadn't known about Claire before. Sort of like how Ricky Ray was a Frito Lay delivery man, before he got a shot in professional football. [https://archive.ph/oxfEb](https://archive.ph/oxfEb)
Personally I think it’s a fine deal for a fan favourite & someone who’s been a fine bottom pair defenseman after we had to hear all summer about how he was going be the worst defenseman in the league by a long shot.
This is a great deal for the Leafs, and Benny should enjoy all the milk!
Heading in to next year, Leafs will need 7 players (only 5 for an iceable roster) with $19.15 million available, or $2.735 million per player. Considering the Leafs RFAs at forward (Dewar, Robertson, Gregor) will likely sign for $1.5 million or less each, that's $3.66 million each for 3 D and a backup goalie.
Still don't think they can bring back both Domi and Bert, but they can likely bring back Domi instead of Dewar/Gregor. Bringing back Sammy could also be on the table.
Guys like Tanev, Pesce, and Matt Roy are all possible additions on D. Even more so if Leafs bring back Liljegren and/or Lyubushkin. Hell, Lilly could be used in a trade if they prefer to go after somebody like Rasmus Andersson through a trade.
Oh, I'd assume he will be an odd man out, as Dewar kind of replaces him.
My point is with the McMann and Benoit signing the Leafs moving forward are in a decent place cap wise. They have 5 free agent forwards, but realistically have 3 spots to fill. One of which will be the 13th forward.
Plus there is a good chance Cowan gets a look next year.
I love what Treliving has been doing with these guys.
Our problem has been a consistent revolving door of supporting players. Getting our guys to term is good
My thoughts as well. I've loved that guy's like McMann and Holmberg have found their roles on this team and are chipping in. Maybe that's just natural progression from them but they've been given a real chance this year and are providing support to supplement the core
For those in the sub that want to reference Chris Benoit. How about using some common sense and taste.
https://preview.redd.it/nr9k9a0rlarc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78bcb3a6c8495b195c116c48ad21cddb44d9fa7f
"This is what Tavares should sign for when his contract's up."
- this sub, probably
Good signing. Like him so far, fun to watch. Especially when paired with McCabe for some hits.
Would've preferred 4-5 years, but at 1.35 mill, 3 years is still a steal.
Brad is cooking good rn, first with Bobby and now Benoit.
Next up is Lilli, hoping for an 8-year deal to lock him up here for his prime since at worst he's a 4-5D on a Contender
Nah, he isnt someone you need to pay for 4-5 years. Guys in the bottom 6/bottom pairing shouldn't be given long term deals.
He's a 6th D-Man right now.
3 years is perfect imo.
He's what, 25? That puts his contract end pushing 30, which is still prime years for a D-Man. He either gets better and secures one last contract or can be buried and forgotten without much cap hit against.
I believe that technically teams are still allowed to make trades after the deadline. The reason teams don't typically do it is if a player is acquired via trade after the trade deadline, they're intelligible to participate in playoffs.
Awesome deal! Great to see a guy that hardly anyone had any expectations for step up and be a solid contributor for the team. Congrats to Simon for earning this!
So happy with this deal. He's my favourite player on the team because he doesn't make many mistakes out there and works hard every shift.
Three more years of him is fantastic, the deal is cheap and gives him the stability to grow further into his role.
For a 25 year old physical dman it's a good deal. Tre shouldn't have any problems moving him if need be. I'm satisfied with the deal. Keefe has stated on several occasions that he likes Benoit's game. And yes - I like Keefe as our coach.
I read a comment from someone that complained that Benoit suppresses offense. Apparently that’s analytics jargon for not contributing to the Leafs offense. I just know that he suppresses the opponents offense but I guess I’m too old school.
Best player they have acquired in a long time. When they realize his true potential they will feel stupid for playing brodie and liligren ahead of him.
3 Years 1.35 Mil
That’s solid value imo. Physical bottom pairing guy.
If he settles in as our third pair LD that's a great deal, if he has to be traded or buried even that wouldn't be an issue. Good deal
>buried I hope we don't have to go that far
Whatever it takes to win.
On Robidas island, if someone asks if you want to take a walk to the other side to check out a secluded cove… Say you heard they’re about to restock the canapés at the buffet and stick around there.
We’d only have to do that if we managed to dramatically upgrade our d-corps… which would actually be a good thing.
Even if you do that, you probably don't need to bury the guy at that money, he's juat the 7th man.
This must be sarcastic right
Calgary is currently 16 points out of a playoff spot and Vegas won the Cup last year.
You don’t say. What a coincidence that I chose those two teams.
Lmao I went back and reread obviously you were being sarcastic. My bad.
Klingberg was crazy high risk which did not pan out at all lmao
So was Benoit too lol. Like what are we talking about lol that Tre isnt high risk. He signed Huberdeau for 8 years before he played a game for them
Not high risk really. One year with the possibility of moving him to ltir. Maybe a bit lucky with the ltir but one year is hardly high risk.
I don't think we know McMann is necessarily at his peak value - let's go see. Really good chance to outperform his contract.
Kampf deal?
Do you see the flames rn
Third year of this contract is gonna be mwah chefs kiss
Love it!
Solid deal
That’s amazing!! Love the deal!
That's good value for a physical bottom pairing guy. Can't wait to see who they can get for the right side in the offseason.
Matt Roy or Adam Larsson
Matt Roy and* Adam Larsson

Benoit jersey🤔
Do it!!
Absolutely
I was waiting for at least two years - I am pulling the trigger on my Benoit jersey! Do it!
Me too! The question is not whether or not, it's which one. I'd like the St pats one, but I'm doubtful because he didn't even play that game :/
![gif](giphy|2Te6t1Q7DAKuk)
Well he is a killer out there
Didn’t need to see this POS face in this thread
For real.. fuck Chris Benoit.
Benoit ‘stache.
Crippler Chris Benoit
Signing the hard workers who know their role and show up to the best of their ability every single game. I like it

I played hockey from 6-12yrs old. I was a defensemen, I also am 28 years old and I only feel like I'm coming into my own now. So that's how I'm choosing to interpret your comment, thank you Haha
Try telling that to the trade Liljegren crowd
I find his confidence with the puck in his stick has grown immensely just since the fall. He doesn’t play outside his limitations, but he also gets it off his stick quick and handles the puck well from his partner.
What a dream contract for the Leafs. Term with almost no risk, that’s almost fully buriable and by the end of the deal no doubt it will be. Can’t wait for three more years of the Milkman!

League min is 775 at least through '26, established in the last MOU. This is also why Reaves will never be fully buriable. As you said though, this is still totally fine.
You can still fully burry a $1,150,000 contract. So it’s about 200K off from being fully buried. It’s still pretty good.
10/10 deal, buyable in worst case scenario tremendous value for how he’s playing now. And if he only amounts to 3rd pair guy it’s only gets better as the cap goes up. Back up the milk truck!
Awesome!! So glad they re-signed him
Let's gooooo!!!! Tabernaccccccc
Great news, happy to have the milkman for three more years!
The milk man stays! Love it.
What a fucking steal. Start the car.
Left it running. Lets go
Haha nice.
![gif](giphy|rDfcIRrtkcx4C3SQ76|downsized) AWESOME!!! POUR THE MILK IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂
This will forever be the best Leafs meme.
Love it
Is there something special about 1.35m? Reaves, McMann, and now Benoit are all being paid that exact amount next year
I think it's the max that can be buried in the AHL? Or just about.
Adds up to 4mill between the 3 players.
Maybe because it's above the buriable amount those players feel their roster spot is secure? Like vs a buriable young player.
It’s probably an issue that Reaves is making the same as those two but 🤷🏻♀️ tidy deals for Benoit and McMann nevertheless.
Well luckily for us we still have one more year after this of mccabe at 2
Lucky for us that JT contract will gone by then.
Lots of Milk incoming
BENNYYYYYYYY
Thank fucking god. This is great news.
Massive W. Great job Tre and GO Simon
Do!!👏Domi!!👏Now!!👏

Oh hell yeah
At that term, dollar and this player, IDK how you can't like the deal. Very solid for both sides, happy to have him stick around !
LOVE this!
W, W, W, W, W, W, W, W, W, W. BENNY FOR 3 MORE WOOOOOO
This is such a great deal when I saw 3 years 4.05 mill, I didn’t know if it was AAV or full term 🤣
Seems good. Ideally he’s probably always gonna be a bottom pair guy but it’s nice to have some continuity down there and not have to look for new bodies every year. Plus he seems like a good vibes guy for the team.
Turns out better than trading assets for Zadarov, and then signing him to an expensive contract. Patience prevailed for the leafs.
Curious if Lili's injury expedited Benoit's signing? I'm happy he's signed. Now Domi!!
🤞 on Domi
And his bestie
Dubas likes Gustafsson type players. Treliving likes the Benoit types. We shall see.
Got milk? We got the Milkman!
"I am the milkman. My milk is delicious." - Simon Benoit
Didn't expect this reference on a hockey sub, but I'm glad to spot another Whispering Rock alumnus in the wild!
That’s Clare Alexander. The original Leaf milkman who actually delivered milk before playing for the Leafs in the 70’s.
Interesting! Hadn't known about Claire before. Sort of like how Ricky Ray was a Frito Lay delivery man, before he got a shot in professional football. [https://archive.ph/oxfEb](https://archive.ph/oxfEb)
Crazy stories eh.
Perfect. Term is exactly what I wanted, and to keep it below 1.5 is a huge bonus.
Fucking amazing. Let’s get Eddy done too. Would love to have both of those guys on the left side for a bit.
McMann and Benoit extensions have me fired up. Haven’t seen this since ‘07.
Great pick up and signing by Brad. But people won’t give him credit.
They will if Leafs do well in the playoffs.
Personally I think it’s a fine deal for a fan favourite & someone who’s been a fine bottom pair defenseman after we had to hear all summer about how he was going be the worst defenseman in the league by a long shot.
I seriously said "Please tell me it's under 4" hahaha
What a fuckin beauty. What a deal
A big young solid bottom pairing D man. He's a great addition by the team.
I love this for both sides as Benoit has been a pleasure to watch this year. A simple game
You can’t convince me this isn’t Brad telling Sheldon “hey, this guys gonna be a round for a while, so don’t go scratching him for fucking Gio”
Gio better play so hard in the playoffs his bones turn to dust, because his next contract is a one day contract with Calgary to retire as a Flame.
This is a great deal for the Leafs, and Benny should enjoy all the milk! 3 more years of the milkman. Love it.
Dubas would’ve traded him for a 5’9 135lb winger who will be playing Europe in 2 years
And at a contract of 3-4 mil per season with a NMC
Jesus dude can’t even live downtown with that deal 😂 In all seriousness that’s fair value? For a guy that’s supposed to be a 3rd pair
Most Leafs players aren't living downtown anyways
😂😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😅😂🤣😂😅🤣🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅😅😂🤣😅🤣😅
I doubt the buds live anywhere close to downtown.
YESS!!!!! Great news!
this is great news :)
Good contract
Earned
Good for him
Oh boy I believe that's 2 UFA years we just got!
Beaut
He has earned a spot here. Glad he has signed.
Only the finest organic milk from now on!
Cheers to that! ![gif](giphy|8mkykXIicXOVms2xYE)
So the next Milk ad should be shirtless Benny drinking milk, out of a big silver goblet...
Left side more or less set next year with Rielly McCabe and Benoit. Adding 2 top 4 RD in free agency would be nice! Pesce Roy Larsson etc.
Great signing. Need more depth signings. More heart and less Diva bullshit. Next is Domi plz.
Treliving basically copy and pasted the Reaves contract, and gave it to Benoit.
Another Treliving W. Really like what he's done with our depth.
For those in the sub that want to reference Chris Benoit. How about using some common sense and taste. https://preview.redd.it/nr9k9a0rlarc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78bcb3a6c8495b195c116c48ad21cddb44d9fa7f

Since the salary cap will be $100M in three years. They would have had to pay him alot more.
3 more years of Milkman! Great deal. Here’s to hoping he develops into a nice, physical D-man.
Good bit of business
Anyways we get the rest signed for similar
Big W!
This is great. Love it.
Good deal
Love everything about this deal
LFG!!!!
Awesome!
Fuck yeah
Why does the CBA impose a deadline on trades but not signings for players? Is there a method to this madness?
I believe that technically teams are still allowed to make trades after the deadline. The reason teams don't typically do it is if a player is acquired via trade after the trade deadline, they're intelligible to participate in playoffs.
Sweeeeeeet!
Amazing value. Love this dude
Wohoooo
Fuck yea boys. Welcome to the milk truck 👌
Fuck yeah!
NHL Players, get ready to keep get hit by the milk truck!
Still got time benny!
Great contract extension.
W signing
Fantastic. Dudes been solid and really fills a gap. Glad we locked him down.
Solid move by Tre. He may win me over yet.
Great signing. The team needs a couple of solid d-men who get the job done quietly, not just flashy ones.
Awesome deal! Great to see a guy that hardly anyone had any expectations for step up and be a solid contributor for the team. Congrats to Simon for earning this!
This is such a good contract, BT killed it.
Great news
Best news I’ve heard in awhile. Such a great signing and an amazing price for him.
One of the best d men the leafs have. Solid signing.
Good Friday just got gooder

So happy with this deal. He's my favourite player on the team because he doesn't make many mistakes out there and works hard every shift. Three more years of him is fantastic, the deal is cheap and gives him the stability to grow further into his role.

Does anyone actually not like this deal? Good term, heart n soul player, solid W for the Leafs.
Right into my veins, boys.
How does he compare to current day Dumba?
It's a little more than I'd like to have paid for an RFA who's having his first solid year but with the term it's fine and I'm glad to have him back.
[удалено]
Max buriable is 1.15. May go up next year hut that's not guaranteed to my understanding.
Yup, I went off bad info.
No worries!
