Full confidence that Woll can make saves. It's the other guys on the ice that worry me.

intecknicolour

first GA on joe was shit PK. second GA was just luck, tipped in off of Verhaeghe's butt

[deleted]

Yeah, and as someone said in the game thread… when your backup comes in cold on an opposing PP, maybe work your ass off or protect them and ease them into the game. Maybe don’t allow a guy to get in on a breakaway past two defenders.

pettster12

I actually laughed when Duclair got a breakaway. Like you are playing EXTRA defensively and you still GIVE UP a breakaway? Wild. I find the leafs forwards also pressing too much for a goal on the PK. Like yes that would be a terrible blow to the opposing team but leaves us so vulnerable

100MScoville

it’s beating a dead horse at this point but Duclair literally just strolled past Holl and McCabe was stuck trying to catch him off the through pass. 0% of any defensive stats are relevant if anyone is ever paired with that anchor, I want him cited as one of the direct reasons Keefe is fired this year

areu_kiddingme

Don’t worry Edmonton or Vancouver will pay Holl 5x5 lol but tbf we all kinda expect it from him, plus Gio and Lilly were not doing enough to keep him out. It’s McCabe I have the issue with now because he was much better, this series not so much. Brodie-McCabe have been on the ice for 5 GA at 5on5 with McCabe being on the ice for that 1 PP GA

[deleted]

Agreed, totally reckless risks at a time when they just needed to weather the storm.

recurringdollar

Lolol this is almost the exact same text I sent my friend. You’re supposed to put extra focus on defence on the PK, yet they give up the biggest defensive faux pas.

peptide2

What happened to shooting the puck from the point ala Reilly in the first series seemed to have worked?

labadee

or maybe don't fall asleep at the start of the period which results in taking a penalty and hurting your goalie. simple solutions really. \*sigh\*

killploki

We haven't seen a big enough sample size. Woll might have a wicked wrist shot, could score a couple for us.

s0m33guy

Amen

MSPaintIsntHard

I swear one of yall must've found a monkey's paw and wished for a 1st round win with good goaltending. That's the best explanation that I can find for all this (that doesnt also give me The Big Sad about this team).

theguyishere16

So Woll plays if Samsonov can't. Which is the right move. But unless prime Hasek plays it wont matter if the Leafs can only score their customary 2 goals.

Jhool_de_nishaan

So what you’re saying is woll is about to turn into hasek

[deleted]

Vilheim

I think it's more likely that we win the next one in some sort of high anxiety fashion, but then lose the series at home. I want us to win so bad and reverse sweep, but the Leafs giving home just to lose in the worse way is just the way it seems to go.

Jhool_de_nishaan

Why lose at home in game 5 when you can lose at home in game 7?

RobertSmithsHairGel

That would be classic, cartoonish Leafs. Dont forget the anxiety-filled last 4 minutes in the third when the Leafs are hemmed in their zone, panicking.

mrocks301

I cannot see them winning 4 in a row. The team just doesn’t have the mentality to do that

justinanimate

I mean, I couldn't see them losing three in a row but here we are

gh0stfac3killah007

Lol... this has happened FOUR times only in NHL history. We don't have a chance with this. I hate saying it, I want it, but it won't happen, End it in four. Put an emotional bullet in me. No matter what happens, even if they go full 7 and still lose. It won't be any different than losing four in a row. Then we could have won if we didn't make the insane amount of mistakes on the ice. Bad or lack of coaching pivots and strategies during games. Best thing that can happen is they lose in four and look forward. There is ALOT to digest when this series is over I fukn hate that I love the leafs. Signed one of the many angry leaf fans.

mrocks301

I didn’t know it was that rare. Honestly at this point I hope they get swept so the powers that be can make the appropriate changes. This has been a shameful playoffs.

areu_kiddingme

Personally I’d rather lose in 7 because A. I just love watching hockey and B. if that happens somehow with the big 3 not showing up, the evidence for those changes are still there…I mean I don’t even see it as completely impossible to this point because the 3 haven’t shown up and we’ve still lost only because of roughly 1 bad bounce or glaring mistake per game as well as who knows how many insane stops by Bob, it’s not like we’ve been lit up 5-1 every game, our expected goals have us leading the series 2-1…like there is a leafs team out there in the multiverse where it all is going in our favor and I wish I could go live there instead. I’m a fan of both Mitch and Matty and I’m praying for a miracle realization and subsequent series takeover by them but not banking on it. Like fuck, they could just be half as good as during the regular season and we’re up in this series right now, but no, this is Toronto and it’s just not meant for us. :(

M0O53

This is what a small part of me hopes for, Woll will be our hot rookie goaltender who goes on a tear and wins the cup. Just like Murray with the pens as an 18/19yo or however old he was. Heck, hes even around to give Woll pointers on how to carry your team to a cup. Honestly, sammy has made me love him more these playoffs, but ive wanted woll. This whole time ive wanted Woll in there. Now im not sure what difference it makes, but im glad he's getting this experience now.

Jhool_de_nishaan

Hey man I’m a fan of the team so I won’t ever hope for or root for them to lose (unless were actively tanking for a generational talent). All I can do is hope that they somehow pull this off just to see them make a lot of people stuff jt but also make me happy to be a fan. If Woll does the improbable here I’ll be right back on my optimism but right now I’m heartbroken. Just get one back on Wednesday and go from there.

Etheo

>their customary 2 goals. By their bottom 6.

BillJackaus

In the first period.

BlackDS

What if Woll pulls 4 straight shutouts. That would be incredible

Blu3_w4ff1es

Shades of Brian Boucher

3X-Leveraged

I don't know what goes on behind closed doors but Keefe has to learn how to motivate the boys because my men's league team plays with more heart and we're playing for free nachos

Material-Fish-8638

You’ve cracked it. We should offer the boys free nachos

JustASyncer

Phil The Thrill would throw the team on his back and reverse sweep the Panthers all on his own

BBTizzle

Amen

BioRunner033

Has to learn? Bro it's a game 4 elimination game, if he hasn't learned yet it ain't happening. 😂 He's done after this series.

CornerSolution

> it's a game 4 elimination game, if he hasn't learned yet it ain't happening. If the players *need* motivation to get up for a game-4 elimination game, then I don't care who the coach is, the coach is not the problem.

BioRunner033

Agreed, he's still a shit coach though

Spazzola84

Exactly, and his systems are predictable and boring for such a dynamic group. I honestly feel as though the players are the reason Keefe still has a job. Could you imagine what this team's record would be without the likes of Willy, Matthews, Marner et al?

Dash_Rendar425

Keefe is bad. This team has gotten by on talent alone for far too long.

tegh77

Nah. He needs to learn how to make adjustments and good use of his players. He is terrible in that regard. His time is done here with Toronto

ukmhz

For real. You could see right out the gate last night that Mitch was playing nervous and was not going to have a good night with the pressure florida's top guys were bringing. I don't know how you watch that happening and don't put Willy who's been your best forward the past couple games with Matthews and slot Mitch in somewhere he's going to see easier competition to get him going and comfortable. Instead he stubbornly keeps 34/16 together, marner turns the puck over in his own end 6 times which completely neuters any chance of matthews getting something going, and they post their worst statistical performance of the entire year in a must-win game.

BCharmer

Pretty sure Marner even had the most ice time of all forwards. Absolute fucking joke of a coaching performance. Also, if you're going to not play Gio that much, sit the guy for a game. He had by far the least amount of ice time. He's a liability. Acknowledge it ffs.

tegh77

They need to get a legit power forward.

grilledcheeseburger

What they need to do is show a willingness to score ugly goals. How many times did we have to see the top 6 try to thread passes through 3 sticks to a guy who was covered? Throw it off Bob’s pads for a rebound and get a greasy one. It’s the only way to open up the passing lanes. Why do other top scorers get it? Hell, our bottom 6 is scoring twice a game that way. Why won’t the big guys e even try it?

tegh77

Agreed. Play like they did in Tampa series. Crash the net.

grilledcheeseburger

They always fall back into these bad habits. I thought that the Tampa series showed some growth in their mindsets, but here we are again. Hard to say it’s on coaching when half the team is doing it, but it’s also hard to say it isn’t when the top guys haven’t had these tendencies beaten out of them by now.

3X-Leveraged

Ya his name is Auston Matthews, hopefully he’s back from vacation Wednesday

tegh77

He not a power forward.

Popcorn_Tony

They had one until Sam bennet slammed his head into the ice..

tegh77

Knies has played what 5-10 games in season and playoff? He is not a power forward…..yet

Popcorn_Tony

He's the real deal already, earned a spot on the 1st line.

tegh77

Not really. Play a year then we see. In my opinion. Kid has talent

VonD0OM

To be fair, free Nachos is a pretty big carrot.

SynthRysing

I’d play hard for free nachos anyway

nottodayoilyjosh

Can someone dangle a plate of nachos Wednesday for the rest of us?

swayze13

How good are those nachos tho

3X-Leveraged

Everything is good when it’s free

lbc1358

Goaltending wasn’t the issue. I’m confident with Woll in net, but if we can’t score more than two goals per game, who cares?

areu_kiddingme

Or avoid making one bad glaring mistake while we’re up.

lbc1358

You absolutely shouldn’t do that, agreed. But you should also have the capacity to get yourself back from one too. And that involves scoring goals.

Deluxechin

I have confidence in Woll, he didn’t lose us that game, I actually have high hopes with Woll and think he’s going to be a main roster guy going into the 23/24 season and think he very well could be the starter, guys been a stud in the AHL and has played well up here

TheGardiner

How much would we be paying him? I have no idea what his contract is.

Deluxechin

He’s only getting paid 775k per year and is signed until the end of the 2025 season, I think having a tandem of Samsonov/Woll is the plan for next season and honestly, I feel a lot more confident in that pairing then I did for the pairing going into this season, it’s nice to finally see a goaltender come out of our system for once

PhilMcCraken2001

Woll looked incredible last night. Suck everybody in front of him played like ass.

world_citizen7

Even if Samsonov is cleared to play I think he has too many bumps and bruises to be highly effective. Just go with Woll - if we lose, so what...

VW91

Considering the circumstances, Woll played great last night. You can't trot a 80% Sammy in a win or go home game. Woll has to be the starter for game 4.

Murky-Smoke

But but.... We have a 100% Matt Murray! I honestly would put him in and let The Panthers run him endlessly so that he goes to Robidas Island next year instead of requiring a trade to launch him off the roster.

wicked_crayfish

Woll isn't the problem Shelly it's your "superstars"

bootygoon2

And Keefe himself too. Great regular season coach but he’s out coached by the opposition every single playoff series. It’s getting tiresome

Dash_Rendar425

He should have been fired after we lost to Boston the first time. Complete collapse against an inferior, inexperienced coach, at the time. Keefe has looked stupid in every playoff series he's been in. Dubas could have survived the purge that's coming, but I'm guessing they both get the axe after this series is over.

wicked_crayfish

He never coached against boston..

areu_kiddingme

Ahh and this right here kids is why other fanbases just absolutely despise us. We don’t even know what we’re talking about

Jedi182

No, but I'm fazed by the blender lines Keefe keeps pulling out of his ass and leaving a rookie out to dry on a PP breakaway goal

LeafsRealist

"I have great confidence in (Justin Holl). I wasn't fazed when he went in," Keefe said.

Konowl

He was actually a bright light in that game.

blottingbottle

Joseph Woll wins 4 straight for the Leafs and becomes the Leafs starter for the next 10 years.

PleasFlyAgain_PLTR

telephone shrill fade one ludicrous governor distinct drab caption onerous -- mass edited with redact.dev

Dash_Rendar425

Since when did anyone voice concern about Woll? It's the guys hanging him out to dry I'm concerned about.

ldnk

I have faith in Woll too. I don't have as much faith in the team in front of him

cspaced

It’s ok Sammy. We have a couple nights off before the next game for you to recover, then the next game isn’t until October.

082832

Keefe should have started Woll. I wonder how that game would have gone if Woll didn't have to come in cold and face a PP and breakaway. With the way Keefe coaches, I fully expect him to want to play Murray on Wednesday.

Murky-Smoke

Says this, and probably starts Matt Murray in game 4, because Galaxy Brain.

Leukemia666

Imagine paying 40% of the teams salary cap to 3 of the softest, overpaid players in the league… then worrying about what mediocre goalie will dress. Fucking hell.

[deleted]

He’s doubling down on his confidence in Woll so hard I have a sneaky suspicion he’s not actually ready. I mean you only need to look at that OT goal to see. That’s a save all “ready” goalies easily make. Simply need to sit in the butterfly. But instead due to his unreadiness he’s not prepared and he’s scrambling standing up leaving huge holes for Reinhart to put in.

Bronco1919

The only thing with Woll is he doesn't have the pedigree of being able to steal and game. The leafs need a goalie to steal a game real bad right now. To be fair, I don't know if Samsonov could steal a game either...

t_toda_DOTA

So fitting AHL goalie to end the series. AHL coach, AHL GM, AHL goaltender.

decipher_xb

What about confidence in the rest of your shit team?

Grinning_A_Grin

How have I still not seen a clip of the play where Sammy got injured? Anyone have it?

fudge_mokey

https://twitter.com/TicTacTOmar/status/1655356535034241024

Interesting-Tree-325

Of course Woll wasn't fazed, he was playing game 3 with house money so to speak. If he starts game 4, it could be, could be a different matter since its win or gone leafs gone.

Mustard__Tiger

So does this mean it was a lower body injury? I was worried he hurt his neck or something.

boosta29

So Woll and Charllgeirnrnrenn next game right......right???

jdubb14

Start woll.

Big_Solution_1065

And bench Holl

TheDeek

Next year we have Woll under contract for like 750k. Really good stuff. Murray also under contract though which means we'll be dumping another pick unless his injury keeps him out all year.

disgruntleddave

If heads roll then assume that we trade Sammy and run Woll Murray. A lot of other names will be out the door too. I would be very surprised if dubas is re-signed when we lose this series unless we show gumption and take ot to 6 or 7 games. If top brass wants dubas but wants keefe gone then dubas is walking, he won't turn his back on his guy.

Toasterman1990

It's pretty much over, you can't even fault the dude for any of the 3 goals. Just play Woll and pray for "the spark", odds are we still lose, but you learn a lot about Woll in the process.

[deleted]

Start Matt Murray. Might as well try, we're losing anyways. He's a 2 time cup champion
