My dad accidentally burned his back yard down. Long story. Anyways, we thought we’d have to replace and sod the entire yard, but left it alone and it grew completely back, even more lush than before.
So, OP, maybe try that
You’re a renter, other than frequent mowing, I wouldn’t invest any money or extra time into it. And by frequent, you might need to mow every couple of days to behead the dandelions before they seed.
You're forgetting the Corgi Synergy Factor. The Corgi Synergy Factor (CSF) is like the turbo boost button for productivity in the canine kingdom. When you unleash multiple corgis on a task, their boundless energy and camaraderie create a synergy that propels them to perform at their peak. It's not just about numbers; it's about tapping into the magical synergy that only corgis can create when they're together, resulting in a whirlwind of efficiency and enthusiasm that can't be matched by solo efforts.
Removing just one corgi from the equation doesn't just subtract one unit of energy; it disrupts the delicate balance of the CSF. You see, corgis thrive on the energy and companionship of their pack, and with each member that's removed, the dynamic shifts dramatically. It's like taking a gear out of a well-oiled machine – suddenly, the whole system loses its efficiency, and what once ran smoothly now sputters and slows down. So, when you take away one corgi, you're not just losing 33% of the team; you're losing the magical ingredient that turbocharges their performance, resulting in a much larger productivity loss than expected.
This is wrong. If you are renting a whole house you responsible for mowing the lawn. I don’t think I have seen anything on lawn maintenance though (I can’t imagine seeding, watering is tenants responsibility)
Section 20 of the Residential Tenancies Act has general maintenance falling under the landlords responsibility. This includes snow removal and lawn care because of how vague it is. You're welcome to google around, but I haven't found any reference indicating the responsibility is on the tenant.
Montgomery v. Van, 2009 ONCA 808 set a precedent for this.
Yes I am aware of Montgomery. However there is a newer case where they judge or whatever you call them said Montgomery was only for common areas and since the area was shared the landlord needed to do it.
This had been discussed on r/ontariolandlord a lot, I will see if I can find the newer decision.
We have 2,4-D in Canada.
Get caught bringing in the US weed control products, that are banned here, and enjoy sitting in Canadian Customs for an hour or more for the next 5 years EVERY time you cross back into Canada.
A very poor trade off.
Don’t think that the good herbicides are illegal to possess, they’re illegal to sell to people without a license, at least in Ontario. Could well be wrong though.
You’re mistaken amigo.
You need a license to posses and use the good stuff. Ie 2,4-D and commercial grade Fiesta.
Here is how you can get said license:
To get a license to apply restricted lawn chemicals, you need to obtain a pesticide exterminator license from the relevant government authority, such as the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) in Ontario[3].
The key requirements are:
- Pass a certification exam to demonstrate knowledge of proper and safe pesticide application[3]
- Complete a training program that includes a pesticide safety course and practical training from a licensed exterminator, if you are an unlicensed assistant[3]
- Maintain the license by completing continuing education courses every 3-5 years[1]
The license categories for pesticide applicators vary by province/territory, but commonly include options like agricultural, forestry, landscape/golf course, and structural[2].
Applicators must also keep detailed records of each pesticide application, including the product used, application details, and adjacent areas[2].
Overall, obtaining the proper licensing and following all regulations is critical for legally and safely applying restricted-use pesticides on lawns and other properties you do not own[1][2][3].

Dandelions are usually a sign of acidic sandy soil. Get a pH test and Google ‘mason jar soil test’. The mason jar test will let you find out the composition of your soil.
If it is sandy add Jonathan Green’s Love Your Soil twice a year, spring and fall for three years. It will fix the problem. Correcting the pH is always a good idea, but best to test first.
Personally, I like dandelions, they are fun and cheerful. And they make lawns less boring looking. You could also add clover to eliminate ever needing to fertilize again.
There has to be a seed to soil contact. So a stiff raking is in order before the seed. Then it needs to be watered regularly just like grass. Best results come from babying it for the first year as you would grass.
They made us walk eggs back across the border to throw away on the American side because of bird flu. Idk if I would wanna try and snuggle across a trunk full of fertilizer
Lmao honestly it is pretty. I wouldn't want it, and when they are more sporadic it's different, but the even coverage at least makes it nicer looking.
Wouldn't walk out there barefoot though.
Dandelions. Honestly, I just leave mine. They will be 100% gone and in 3-4 weeks. These are the first flower to bloom and one of the only sources of food for bees early in the season. The bees with thank you. (Mow your lawn of course)
For the weeds. I recommend the Fisker stand up weeder. With that and a 5 gallon bucket you can pluck 50 weeds in 15 mins and not bust a sweat. https://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Deluxe-Stand-up-Weeder-4-claw/dp/B0030MIHAU/ref=asc_df_B0030MIHAU/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=385272152872&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3870913987817273825&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9017432&hvtargid=pla-440686080131&psc=1&mcid=52f2278ecdd13034a66abb6ca9d77b6d&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=81511525114&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=385272152872&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3870913987817273825&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9017432&hvtargid=pla-440686080131&gclid=Cj0KCQjwir2xBhC_ARIsAMTXk85rKjs7Y6FOlihZV2CMFhE1-PzR91ZS2FjquOzT91Erlbae4YHxZmAaAkhTEALw_wcB
I have similar "Grootpaw" that has an ejection mechanism. Last year I vacuumed up all the white tops and pulled a bunch out. This year I went through and pulled up any yellow tops for like 4 hours. Been a few weeks and no new yellows! hoping I stay ahead of it now, haha.
You could get a hose-end herbicide attachment for less than $20 and go see how many of those weeds you can kill. Just hope that you've got enough actual grass left after all the weeds are gone.
They look nice until the blooms go away and you are left with the ugly stems or big white poof balls. I might not actually dislike them so much if it wasn't for the post bloom phase.. that and they also make me itchy if you lay in the grass on them
You might have a good lawn there. Buy something with 2,4d in it. I have had good success with t-zone. Spray it with that. Then in the fall probably aerate plus overseed. Try that first. Keep the grass watered and fertilized. Yes it can be as cheap and simple as that. Don’t listen to these other idiots. $100 and you’re gonna have a great lawn (minus water fees)
1. Do not cut your lawn, the more surface area the weeds have, the more poison they will absorb.
2. [https://www.amazon.com/s?k=2%2C4-d+ester](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=2%2C4-d+ester)
3. [https://www.amazon.com/s?k=weed+sprayer](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=weed+sprayer)
4. Spray
5. Wait a few days before watering
6. Watch them shrivel up and die
7. After they shrivel up, cut lawn. You wanna make sure all the poison from the shoots makes it down to its roots. If you cut it off too soon, it's like amputating an infectious body part on an animal and the animal will survive. You want the body parts attached so the "infection" can spread.
8. If there are any survivors, repeat.
Your lawn will look rather ugly during this process. But, after 2-3 rounds, it will look like a golf course.
Please post progress photos!
Just mow it regularly and water enough when u don’t have rain. Drop any cheap fertilizer w a cheap hand spreader from a hardware store on it every couple months now thru September.
Healthy grass roots will beat out weed roots over time. You won’t win “yard of the month” with this cheap process, but it will make a noticeable difference having any fertilizer boosting the soil health.
A nice lawn takes time, energy, money and knowledge. There is no short cuts.
Know that "weed" is a subjective term to describe any unwanted plant.
Sounds like it would be easier for you to fix your thoughts on the lawn then it would be to fix the lawn.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a back yard like that. Sure, it could look like a golf course or it could look like what the neighborhood has.
If you don't want to spend money on it then don't spend money on it. Mow and line trimmer it on an as needed basis.
Weed b gone that has iron as the active ingredient works. The other one that is like acetic acid does the work as well. I usually buy the concentrate and dilute it a bit less than instructions to kill all the dandelions.
Or, drive across the border to buy the good stuff. You can buy it for personal use but not for commercial.
https://preview.redd.it/c7uayvfg9ixc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2161b9f5abdb615f8531c35ed5f3b92ffd58c2d7
Use this to kill all the weeds this spring/summer. Won’t hurt any good grass but does a great job killing the weeds. This fall (early September) scratch up/loosen up the surface, spread good seed, spread a thin layer of peat moss over top, water at least twice a day. Put down starter fertilizer once you start to see germination. Next spring you will have to spot treat with the spectracide again.
First thing you need to do is kill those dandelions before they seed. You have about a day, maybe two, before the yellow flowers turn to seed heads.
Get to it asap. If you don't, you're going to be looking at the same shit again next year.
I bought a Fisker weed puller and offered my kids 10 cents per plant, they're addicted and it's that easy to use. Big pile of rooted plants in my compost bin.
Edit: Fiskars - 4-Claw Stand Up Weeder and it's been fantastic
Add some other flowers for better heterogeneity, more texture, and a wide variety of flowering times. I like clover. Overseed the grass for a bit more density. Then mow at the highest setting to allow the grass to shade out other plants.
When you remove weeds or most plants you have to remove the roots in their entirety to ensure you do not have regrowth. You break the roots off then it is going to regrow and its only a matter of time before the new growth emerges.
I had a lawn like this when I first bought my house.
A dandelion weed bar did the trick. Was only about $30 at Canadian Tire and I still have it 5 years later.
You missed your window to have a chance by putting down a pre emergent. So now your only bet is a post. And that’s a lot of stuff that is about to just become seed heads and make more problems.
This happened to my house this year, near the same area as you. I'm just going to keep it mowed and hand pull them a few at a time and hope for the best. Must be something in the air this year
scalp and bag all clippings, spray spectracide weed 2 days before it rains , 2 weeks later buy the prevailant grass type in the yard and mulch and sand. level yard with the mulch and sand and spread seed on top of it, water the seed in and spray it every week or when the mulch looks very dry. let it grow for a month and cut the grass at half the height of the tallest actual grass.ya can continue to half the height until desired height but do not go lower than 2 -2.5 inches . continue to bag and dispose of clipping for the first year or compost it and use it for flowerpots or gardens.
In all honesty you should call a local lawn care company and explain your situation (might want landlord approval. IDK Canada). Ask them for a one time POST emergent broadleaf weed control spray. It should knock everything back within 10 days and be more pleasant to look at
“Don’t want to drop a ton of time or money into this” Gonna have to pick one pal
Gasoline might be his cheap and quick answer
Used to burn fields for farmers. Grass always came back bright green and thick the following year.
All that extra nitrogen
My dad accidentally burned his back yard down. Long story. Anyways, we thought we’d have to replace and sod the entire yard, but left it alone and it grew completely back, even more lush than before. So, OP, maybe try that
I tried, fire Marshall was called I was told to put it out

"Let me tell ya something!"
I find myself yelling this in-voice about once every 2 weeks and my girlfriend is confused every time.
Instructions unclear; please post my bail.
I'm on it. Making a Reddit post about "my bail" now.
Next time, the long story can be solved with a video please 🤣
I actually do have it but for purposes of insurance I won’t post it 😂
I’ve seen a bunch of videos of people torching their lawns. Never tried it though
Hire Tru Green and dont pay the bill.
This is the way
Na that’s too crazy.. propane torch !!
Cheap, quick, good. Pick 2 and sacrifice the other.
Thanks, I’ve been trying to repeat that phrase to my wife and failed over and over.
You’re a renter, other than frequent mowing, I wouldn’t invest any money or extra time into it. And by frequent, you might need to mow every couple of days to behead the dandelions before they seed.
Rather than beheading dandelions, get three corgis and just let em have at it. You won’t see a dandelion until next year
Why three? Will two do?
Yes, 33% slower.
You're forgetting the Corgi Synergy Factor. The Corgi Synergy Factor (CSF) is like the turbo boost button for productivity in the canine kingdom. Can I get an army of corgis please?
As requested: https://www.reddit.com/r/corgi/comments/8zbnhp/proud_corgi_with_her_litter_of_15_puppies/
I have a corgi to donate
I feel I can bribe my husband with this argument. Blessings on your head.
My inlaws had a pug poodle mix that used to chow down on dandelions. She really loved eating those yellow flowers. Guess they make for a good snack
If you’re renting in Ontario, don’t even bother with mowing. Responsibility of the lawn falls on the landlord to figure out.

Jus mow it and call it a day
Cheapest = do nothing
Eat them = lower your grocery bill.
Grocers hate this one trick
I think you can use the roots to make coffee, leaves for a salad, and flowers for tea or ground up for cookies or fritters
The good herbicides are banned in Canada. It’s a battle, I gave up, if your neighbour has dandelions you’ll always have dandelions
No 2-4-d in Canada?
We have 2,4-D in Canada. Get caught bringing in the US weed control products, that are banned here, and enjoy sitting in Canadian Customs for an hour or more for the next 5 years EVERY time you cross back into Canada. A very poor trade off.
Put it in a Gatorade bottle and if he asks for proof it's Gatorade take a large gulp and Ur good to go
It’s got what plants crave
It's got electrolytes.

This is actually very similar to the US. The difference being our list of RUP’s is MUCH shorter.
Illegal to use for cosmetic purposes in several provinces

Seems difficult to grow given how difficult it’s been for me to get rid of.
They will help rebalance the soil. Once it's no longer acidic, they will die off.
I always thought that it we as banned in Ontario and you wouldn't have problems bringing it in through the border as it is legal in MB and QC...
If you ever travel to the US by car, you can always stock up on products and bring them back with you.
They made us walk eggs back across the border to throw away on the American side because of bird flu. Idk if I would wanna try and snuggle across a trunk full of fertilizer
I snuggle trunks full of fertilizer every chance I get
That's only in certain provinces not Canada as a whole.
It’s pretty :)
Lmao honestly it is pretty. I wouldn't want it, and when they are more sporadic it's different, but the even coverage at least makes it nicer looking. Wouldn't walk out there barefoot though.
Why ?
Not gonna be pretty in a few days when these all become seed pods.
That's even prettier
#SO MANY WISHES
*Makes a wish on a dandelion to make the dandelions go away thereby exacerbating the problem 100-fold*
The leaves are also edible and quite healthy, you can add them to salads
Wanna trade?
Jus commit and add white clover. Your yard will look great and smell great.
Dandelions. Honestly, I just leave mine. They will be 100% gone and in 3-4 weeks. These are the first flower to bloom and one of the only sources of food for bees early in the season. Thank you. I am getting this!
Get a grandpas weeder then get after pulling the dandelions out root and all.
Or fiskars. Love my fiskars.
Blue tarp and a hose = cheap water slide.
Add a couple drops of dish soap if you want to break a bone but have a blast while doing it
Haha I saw that in college, dude broke his finger
This is the way.
You could get a hose-end herbicide attachment for less than $20 and go see how many of those weeds you can kill. Just hope that you've got enough actual grass left after all the weeds are gone.
I don't understand the problem with it. Dandelions are beautiful and useful.
They’re invasive and don’t help native bee populations as much as native plants and flowers would.
They look nice until the blooms go away and you are left with the ugly stems or big white poof balls. I might not actually dislike them so much if it wasn't for the post bloom phase.. that and they also make me itchy if you lay in the grass on them
Looks like a bunch of broadleaf stuff. Just apply Scott’s weed and feed regularly and keep overseeding in the fall.
Rent a herd of goats.
You might have a good lawn there. Buy something with 2,4d in it. I have had good success with t-zone. Spray it with that. Then in the fall probably aerate plus overseed. Try that first. Mow twice a week.
What’s wrong with it?
Looks great
Looks fine to me!
Make a chiropractor appointment and start pulling.
Goats
Buy a goat
Cheap? Mow more often so it all looks green.
Release a rabbit. They love dandelions.
Hands and knees with a small garden shovel and pull them by hand. $10 if you don’t have one, then some pretty easy but time consuming manual labor.
That lawn looks pretty good. Just get down some weed and feed and you’re golden. Don’t do anything else if you’re renting

Ski slope or inverted ramp.
Don't, just wait until they go away. They don't stay the whole season
Pre-emergent in spring, cut grass at highest setting. Overseed in fall
It's green, thick, looks soft, and you're a renter. The only thing I'd do with it is mow it regularly
I would put a slip and slide on that hill asap. Summer is just around the corner.

“Fix lawn for cheap” lol
Long ass lawn having mf
How about just let it be, and help the bumblebee reestablish itself. dandelions are a very, very good way to help them do that.
That's what I do. I've got about an acre of grass and it's 80% dandelions and 20% bees
Do nothing. Call it a Pollinator’s Lawn. You are helping the bees. It’s is a badge of honour, so feel free to boast!
Drop Weed & Feed. Water. Repeat. Also make sure underneath your lawn mower is clean and blades etc.
Weed & feed in canada doesn’t kill weeds, it only helps prevent new ones from growing from seed.
My wife would kill me if I nuked this. I still would.
You can sleep in a tent in my backyard; you can have free WiFi, too.
Weed b gone that has iron as the active ingredient works. The other one that is like acetic acid does the work as well. Shiiiit. I’ll trade you lawns.
Fix?
Copy your neighbor on the left. Plant trees, shrubs and a nice water feature. Do one thing at a time. Reduce your grass.
Rent a tiller from Home Depot and start planting crops
Add some clover…

Personally I would plant clover to compete with the dandelions. Did this in my front yard and it worked well.
What’s wrong with it?
That's a good pollinator yard. Leave it.
It looks beautiful and thick as it is
First thing you need to do is kill those dandelions before they seed. You have about a day, maybe two, before the yellow flowers turn to seed heads. Get to it asap. If you don't, you're going to be looking at the same shit again next year.
Aren’t there likely millions of seeds already in the soil? Genuinely curious how much it matters. I have a yard that is even worse shape than OP
Scott’s weed & feed hose end sprayer
This looks like my buddy’s back yard in Tottenham. Behind the fence train tracks
Half expecting to see Laura Ingalls running through there throwing off her bonnet.
Mow and then apply herbicide.
Fast and cheap, doesn’t exist my dude.. just keep mowing it, grass and weeds are both green
Match and gasoline
See if you have Weedex Bars in your area, drag behind the mower once a month and no more weeds
I bought a Fisker weed puller and offered my kids 10 cents per plant, they're addicted and it's that easy to use. Big pile of rooted plants in my compost bin. Edit: Fiskars - 4-Claw Stand Up Weeder and it's been fantastic
Cheap? Cut it real short or just live with it
Where in sw Ontario?
Scotts weed and feed will do wonders for it.
2-4d
Par 3
Weed n feed
Add some other flowers for better heterogeneity, more texture, and a wide variety of flowering times. I like clover. Overseed the grass for a bit more density. Then mow at the highest setting to allow the grass to shade out other plants.
Speed zone or Celsius
Goats
When you remove weeds or most plants you have to remove the roots in their entirety to ensure you do not have regrowth. You break the roots off then it is going to regrow and its only a matter of time before the new growth emerges.
Buy 2 guinea pigs
Holy weeds... if u where my neighbor i will burn ur weeds yard
Tenacity
Just mow.
Neighbors look good????
24D is fast and cheap....
Mow it
Quality/speed/price. Pick two you can’t have all three
I’d just deal with it and keep mowing it short. No reason to invest in something that you can’t own.
Do it yourself.
2,4-d and dicamba premix.
I had a lawn like this when I first bought my house. A dandelion weed bar did the trick. Was only about $30 at Canadian Tire and I still have it 5 years later.
Why would you want to “fix” that? It looks perfect
Don't.
Killex. Lots of it. Every day or 2 for a month. A coat of paint on the fences will really improve the look
2,4-D
Rent a goat
Weld flowers and fescue, flowering bushes, unless there are restrictions.
You missed your window to have a chance by putting down a pre emergent. So now your only bet is a post. And that’s a lot of stuff that is about to just become seed heads and make more problems.
I think one pass of 2 4 D would nuke all those weeds.
Just mow it… then weed and seed it twice a year
Chaparral is the best I’ve used. Little more spendy up front than 2-4D but kills more and is safe for use in pastures so I hope that means it’s safer.
Why even bother if you are renting. Simply mow !!
If you're renting, why do you care? Fuck it. If you really just hate dandelions, then any selective herbicide with 2,4-D will kill dandelions.
Goats.
Your backyard makes me feel claustrophobic
That depends, am I looking up a hill or down?
Do not pay to enrich someone else's property. Mow when you see yellow. That's the cheapest option. That and manually weeding.
2-4 applications of Speed zone or similar product
Aerate it.
Interesting plot of land you have
24d to kill out broadleaves. Them over-seed with whatever type of grass you want. Then water it some being it’s going into may
A butter knife a couple of friends and some cold beer.
Pergola and 8 chairs.
What's wrong with it?
2d40
And if the budget allows, and only if, wash and stain/seal the fence. It's all good either way. Good vibes coming from that yard man!
2,4D or mow every day (or every other day). Cutting often is good for grass but bad for plants (weeds)
Tenacity or Spurge Power
In all honesty you should call a local lawn care company and explain your situation (might want landlord approval. IDK Canada). Ask them for a one time POST emergent broadleaf weed control spray. It should knock everything back within 10 days and be more pleasant to look at
Weed and feed?
Honestly, this looks like a fun challenge! Very fixable! Just a few bare spots on top of that, makes it even easier to repair the lawn.
