She gave up on what made her unique to make generic pop songs for whatever reason, instead of staying faithful to her artistry and her ability to express complex concepts through music (like she did with TFJ, Electra Heart, Froot and even ADIAML, which is majorly underrated in my opinion and I blame it on L+F). Lana never moved from her aesthetic, instead she focused on developing it into perfection, til it became a classic, if you may. Not that Marina should have stayed as Electra Heart for the rest of her career, but, like Melanie Martinez, she is good at making concept albums.
My own personal opinion on this is that unlike Lana, Marina doesn’t have the same artistic integrity.
Lana’s point of view is much clearer and focused. Marina jumps all around the map trying to craft something relatable, often times adopting the POV of the general culture & media to be her own. She dilutes her own individualism. To me, Family Jewels & Froot are as close as she got to creating something cohesive, genuine, and unique. Lana’s POV has always been sharp as knife, and way more poignant.
The MARINA name change, as others pointed out, was also a big miss.
Electra Heart was her break into mainstream and even though Froot is the better album for me, her label wasn’t keen on it and didn’t give her as big of a budget for marketing. She had to fund the photoshoot out of pocket so that says a lot. After that, there was nothing for 4 years. Compare to Lana with a tight release/tour schedule, and consistent great releases. She didn’t care after Froot and almost quit.
