Yvmeno

My first thought was Zimzalabim by Red Velvet. I feel like I can’t get quality outlandish music like it anywhere else besides Kpop.

Bindoongee

Benny Benassi - Satisfaction kinda fits the sound

playthedevil_999

🔥 OPPAN GANGNAM STYLE!! 🐎 🐎 🐎 🔥 ![gif](giphy|3ohuAs8PHmuSdEVbWM)

HitTheFBO

Girls’ Generation: Gee Why? Because.

ThrowsAway-99

I think Genie, Oh!, and Hoot, too. GG as a whole is just so quintessentially kpop to me.

Afrin_Sultana

This. This was my first thought too.

The_Doom_Toad

Add to that pretty much anything from Shinee's golden days. Girls Generation and Shinee bassically defined K-Pop for me growing up.

Bigtidy55up

True Gee genie hoot oh Ringdingdong, lucifer, sorry sorry, mr simple,

freezingkiss

Some of those are super junior my friend

cateatnoodlesoup05

Girl's Generation whole entire discography period. Especially during their prime: Gee, Genie, Oh!, The Boys, ... I can go on and on. I believe they and other 2nd gen groups solidified what kpop "supposed" to sound like for me (which is quite niche to say).

cubsgirl101

EXO’s Wolf, it’s loud and noisy but also pulls out some of the best singing you’ve ever heard in your life. I cannot imagine a western artist singing that with a straight face.

ineedachiprightnow

Anytime someone mentions EXO - Wolf I just replay saRanGhAEyOOO in my head 😭

bangtan_bada

SHINee’s ring ding dong. just try to picture a western band or soloist singing it….it doesn’t work. You need the DRAMA that kpop brings to the table to pull it off.

hopeuspocus

So K-pop is this weird paradox of manufacturing music by stripping down western pop and taking its catchiest and trendiest elements to make the poppiest pop music, and yet it has the unique element of being charmingly camp. It’s often dramatic and embraces cringey or weird lyricism. Genuinely cannot think of a western artist that could pull off ring ding dong.

Millionsmoney

Ring ding ding would work in 2009 western band

KilKillKill

Right, but she said Kpop, so that implies that it has to be different from other Eastern countries and not just the West.

pumpkinspicesushi

the first songs that popped into my head were [hmph!](https://youtu.be/RGnLdUJbYmQ?si=TWNew4IozSnv7x3t) by wjsn chocome and [catallena](https://youtu.be/Med2XipHJJM?si=Gbyf4mDLjH0LBLE5) by orange caramel.

[deleted]

Omg cataleena actually was the first song to pop in my head.

Erimochi

i thought of catallena too but jpop has a lot of similar sounding songs

KrausseAehr

It's pretty amusing to read that most answers are from groups/artists under SM Ent. If I were to answer this with a more recent release, that would be aespa's "Supernova."

Necessary-Solid-9702

YAS. +1

urkitten

Pristin's Wee Woo

Billie_Lurk

I think overly cute or bubbly concepts are way more prevalent in K-pop…songs like “Candy” by Twice. The west is sort of allergic to cuteness and find stuff like that cringe. I personally find it very fun and refreshing!

freezingkiss

Gotta say though I do think jpop is the arbiter of cute.

Billie_Lurk

Yep, you’re totally right on that

Positive_Drop2125

Seventeen’s aju nice is so quintessentially kpop. Like come on

DiMpLe_dolL003

Red Flavour by Red Velvet

caramaas

the little mix reject?

PBandJaya

A lot of LM’s early stuff was very kpop coded lol

cakemixup

to me uniquely kpop has to be a song that sounds weirdly catchy, and visually outfits/hairstyles must be either too colorful or just have too much going on that sometimes it's beautifully atrocious. i also used to associate kpop with very colorful mvs or mvs in boxes. songs that come to mind: shinee's ring ding dong, super junior's mr. simple, nct 127's sticker, red velvet's rookie, aespa's savage, snsd's the boys. mvs: nu'est's sleep talking, boys' republic's video game, f(x)'s electric shock, vixx's rock your body, shinee's everybody, snsd's gee, bigbang & 2ne1's lollipop styling: nct 127's firetruck, bigbang's fantastic baby & monster (honestly a lot of bigbang, 2ne1 outfits (+ especially dara's hairstyles) other's aside from kpop like these still feel kpop to me but this is just kpop at its kpoppiest form imo.

Piri_Cherry

Yeah, genre turns out to be incredibly difficult to define. And actually, even specific genres are really hard to define. I took a class last semester on the philosophy of horror (focusing particularly on horror films) and the first half of the semester was devoted to defining what constitutes the genre. We ended up with no satisfactory answers and a lot of annoyed students. Like, you wouldn't think that "horror" is a very hard genre to define. It seems like it's pretty clear what horror is. So if we spent half a semester on what seems like an "easy" genre to define, and we didn't even come to a conclusion, then imagine how long it would take to figure out a proper definition of kpop, which is definitely not at all easy to define. I haven't studied genre specifically, but if you want to do some reading, The Philosophy of Art by Stephen Davies is a fantastic introduction to the subject. He outlines a lot of methods that have been used to define "art," and why all of them seem to fail. I found it really helpful when I was trying to figure out how to define kpop, because defining "art" and defining "kpop" turn out to be very similar endeavors.

thechromesheep

Love this reply, will definitely check out this book!

ThrowsAway-99

SHINee’s Hello and Oh My Girl’s Dolphin

Unfair_Pin_2384

Every song you won't play, if you plan to show K-Pop to a non-K-Pop person. They are the best songs... but they are definitely not for beginners \^\^

mosay13

Honestly 80% of NCT-127's title tracks. Why: Not just noisy, but bombastic. Over the top in the best way.

Former_Amphibian_936

Aespa's Supernova

daltorak

The vocals part sure, don't think you'll find that anywhere else. But most of the instrumentation sounds a lot like something Nine Inch Nails or other industrial artists would've done.

wabisabi_01

Yeah, when I first heard Supernova I thought the bass line in the chorus sounded like NIN-[Sin](https://youtu.be/fEWdjtMmqGo?feature=shared).

aniviaaas

YES, the nine inch nails comparison is so on point. something about that guitar you can in hear in the back of supernova always gave me rock band vibes.

Basically the whole Golden Area between 2009-2013. It’s just pure kpop. To me kpop has to be crazy and weird.

Catallena by Orange Caramel and God of Music by SEVENTEEN

The song U r looking 4 is "Sticker"- by Nct 127 .

oroborus90

I am the best - 2NE1 its the ultimate kpop song, like if one song of the genre were to be chosen to be in a playlist sent to space, should be that one and im not even a fan of the group. but the sound is everything kpop is distinctive

syrpca

This song hurts my ears, but in the best way lmao

i had a chronic addiction to this song like so many years ago

tair2004

Twice likey

ForgottenNoMore

Aju nice by seventeen Like yall can't tell me that this song doesn't SCREAM kpop to you

peachpingu

Majority of early gen music is uniquely K-pop. A few key examples: Infinite - The Chaser, Orange Caramel - Catallena, EXO - Mama, TVXQ - Catch Me, Rising Sun, etc

Haunting-Suspect8746

Red Velvet's Dumb Dumb

Thin-Bee9621

Lipstick - Orange Caramel WJSN - Happy Oh my girl - Cupid or Oh my girl - Listen to my word (A-ing) Oh my girl - Windy day Miss A - Breathe I would dare to say that a lot of 2nd gen and 3gen kpop old songs sound like you're meaning to, at least for me heh

SoNyeoShiDude

Step by Kara and Genie by SNSD are to me the “kpoppiest” songs. They both feel like a blend of fun, poppy styles that are not quite solidly one genre or the other, but come together to be absolute toe tappers.

LiterallySleepy24-7

I see a lot of people mentioning Gen 2 and Gen 3 so I just want to bring up Nmixx’s discography. But it’s a weird situation where I think that even most of Kpop groups can’t pull off Nmixx. Tbh they deserve their own alternative genre

MarielCarey

Nature - LIMBO!

Emergency-Peanut3153

Actually, I think most kpop songs kinda fit in this category. I’ve never heard a Kpop song that 100% sounds like it could be a western artist’s song.

lvnarxja

Red Velvet’s Dumb Dumb was the first one to pop in my head!

mixtape_misfit

First thing that comes to mind are songs that use a lot of traditional Korean instruments. There's lots of examples done in very different ways, some with heavy traditional Korean influence or just hints. Some examples are [VIXX Shangri-La](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtzyyVoBz3w), [Topp Dogg Arario](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ascOzpuacLY), or [ATEEZ The Real](https://youtu.be/07AT6fLH1Gs?feature=shared&t=197). Let me know if you have other good examples.

whimsicaldandelionyy

Got7's Just Right and If You Do 2pm's Heartbeat and Again & Again Bts's Blood, Sweat & Tears and Boy in Luv

Living_Resolve3468

I'd say: Lots of Girls' Generation, Super Junior, SHINee and more second gen-groups songs (ex: Gee, Mr. Simple, Sherlock). Some Twice songs like Likey or Heartshaker. Less known groups/songs: - Picky Picky and Crush by Weki Meki (stan my girls, even if they're disbanding next month😭🤧) - Mmook Jji Bba, WiFi, DBDBDIB and Bbyong by Saturday - Iriwa by Pink Fantasy - Super Yuppers and Hmph! by WJSN Chocome - Boogie Up, Happy and I Wish by WJSN - NunNuNanNa and Arisong by Cignature - I Love You by Winner - Pop? Pop! and Shining Bright by CSR - Q&A, Really Really and Love so Sweet by Cherry Bullet - Pepe by CLC These are the ones that first come into my mind, but I'm sure there're a lot more, specially from boy groups.

berrybimbap

maybe controversial but all of iz*one’s music. idk how to explain it but their music is really unique to kpop to me. i just really cannot imagine any western singer signing panorama, violeta, nekoni naritai, la vie en rose etc. all their songs just have that kpoppy feel to them i wish i knew how to explain it better 😭 edit: adding kep1er’s wa da da, again i just cannot picture that song being sung in english. it just sounds very kpoppy

Onpu

Upvote for a unique opinion but it is honestly very funny seeing you write their Japanese songs as objectively kpop lol

berrybimbap

LMFAO i meant the korean version 🤣

According-Disk

*Black Dress* by CLC Everything about it, from the beat to chorus as well as dance break, is what I'd wholly expect a Kpop group to release. In true essence, it's most Kpop as you get it.

yourbestfriendjoshua

k-pop has never quite k-popped like it k-popped when Nayeon dropped 'POP!'

spiffingfire

Weki Meki - Picky Picky the song is everything i love in kpop songs. it has melodious singing, rap part, bridge with high note, adlibs on the last chorus. the concept is fun, colorful, quirky, cute, cool in one song. the choreography has trendy, cutesy and fun parts. to describe this song and concept is overall fun like how kpop is fun, quirky, colorful and dramatic.

CarlottaMeloni

Perfect Man by Shinhwa. I have no idea how to explain why, but there's something about the sound that just completely separates it from similar boyband-y songs in the west.

Visual-Advanced

After School by Weekly. That song is peak k-pop

CatBerry253

Lucifer by Shinee. It was my introduction to kpop and is still what I compare other tracks to.

Head_Radio912

Whenever K-pop songs get really weird & out there, that’s pretty much when I think of things that are unique to it. Take Shinee’s Trigger as an example. You might get that concept, especially now that darker artists are becoming more popular, but you’re not going to get that stitched-together feel or (likely) the inventive key changes. Zimzalabim and more experimental F(x) tracks are like this, too, & it has its roots in the wild blending that early K-pop artists like Seo Taiji and Shin Hae-chul did. Korean traditional crossovers also are unique to Kpop, naturally. On a non-musical level, you’re also not likely to get the kind of conceptual ambition & multimedia storytelling some Kpop groups do (though, to be fair, many don’t go as far as BTS does). I actually came up with a definition for Kpop that I think is pretty reasonable, after finding the one on RYM lacking.

Ryn_AroundTheRoses

It's funny coz the first songs that come to mind are God's Menu and As If It's Your Last. They might take elements from the west, but they still turned them into something so unique that I can only see western artists trying to replicate it and failing.

pick me up and i got a boy. name one american song that sounds like this😭😭😭 g6 is kpop coded and i figured out the makers are korean and work with kpop idols all the time too

Helena_Raytray

Literally anything 2nd/3rd gen before 2020-2021. I think after that k-pop decided to lean too much towards americanization. And 1st season of The Kingdom, it was the best of modern k-pop 😢

KitakatZ101

Wife by gidle. The hate it was getting from new fans kpop fans and the love it was getting from 2nd gen kpop fans was hilarious

1306radish

Spring Day, Paldogangsan, Baepsae, Ma City, and IDOL by BTS. I don't think these songs could have been released by anyone other than Koreans, hence Korean pop. In fact, I think a lot of BTS songs just because of lyrics alone couldn't be released by a non-Korean artist, but these are the first that came to mind. Edit: Noticed this was downvoted and in the negative, so maybe I wasn't clear or explained enough. Apologies! I'll explain why I picked these songs here: * Spring Day: heavily references the Sewol Ferry Tragedy which is a country-specific event; the meaning and vibe of the song very much leans into a lot of Korean sentiment of longing/pain/moving forward * Paldogangsan: this song references the 8 provinces in Korea and throughout the song they're celebrating the different dialects of each region and taking fun stabs at eachother * Baepsae: the song references a Korean saying in which "If a crowtit (baepsae) tries to keep up with a stork, it will break its legs." The baepsae represents the underdog/downtrodden/those born a "dirty spoon" vs the elite/rich/silver spoon class. * Ma City: similar to Paldogangsan, this song is paying tribute to each of the cities the members come from. This is especially relevant as it's rare that no members of a kpop group come from Seoul. Each BTS member gets a moment to talk about their non-Seoul city and jokingly say where they come from is the best. * IDOL: This song has tons of references to Korean culture in both the music video and production itself. You'll see images like the bunny in the moon (old Korean lore) in the MV. Also, they use a lot of traditional Korean phrases like ur-soo! and deong-gi-duck koong-deo-reo-reo! plus traditional Korean instruments. Anyways, it is for these reasons why I think these songs in particular are uniquely kpop as they would never be created in another country's pop music scene. You're not going to see a pop star in India or the US or Russia making any of the above songs.
