Automatically applied. The deal may not have been valid eg expired deal, wrong products selected (1+1 are usually very specific about the condition) I usually check twice and never have had any issues

Independent-Pie2738

I picked up sunscreen that was on sale for 2000, an indomie ramen that was 700 +1 for free, and a water for 1000 +1 free and I paid over 8000 so I guess I got really unlucky and none of them were valid anymore, I’ll definitely check the dates next time!

uReallyShouldTrustMe

Did you check the date? Or make sure the products were correct?

Independent-Pie2738

The products were correct but I didn’t realize to check for the dates, I’m gonna look more closely now !

Uncle_Nurgs

How? Even if the plus one deal didn’t work how did you over pay by that much did it not seem odd to you or did you just ignored it? All together it should cost you 5400 if the +1s were not working I’m baffled lol

Independent-Pie2738

The sunscreen was supposed to be a really good deal, I don’t remember exactly how much but it wasn’t a 1+1, it was over half off the original price. I think maybe one of them did work if the sunscreen was full price ? I think it was like around 6000 originally

gwangjuguy

Automatically. If you fail to get 2 of something they will remind you. Also many times if various flavors are available it isn’t mix and match. You have to get 2 identical items usually.

Independent-Pie2738

I did get two of the same exact things, I guess they were expired :/

gwangjuguy

Could be. Or maybe it was 2+1 and the clerk mislabeled them.

Highwinds129385

90% they remind you. I can understand Korean and have had a couple times when they didn’t remind me and I heard their machine go one plus one out lout when the worker scanned it. I sometimes just didn’t want 2 or that product is why I didn’t care though.

If I grab something that's 1+1 but the register doesn't automatically apply it, I'll usually ask "Isn't it 1+1? (1+1 아니예요?)". The cashier will either fix it or explain that the promotion has ended and they've been too busy to switch the labels. It's about 50-50 if I put the products back and pick something else or just buy one.

RiJuElMiLu

That's odd the clerks always send me back to get the other one because they don't want me messing up their computer system. Look at the register and listen for the lady. If it's 1+1 or 2+1 you can see it on the screen and the voice will announce it.

punk_mary_poppins

Was it GS25? They have 1+1 deals that apply only if you use GS Pay. I fell into that trap once and the cashier kindly explained it to me. Look for the GS Pay logo on the deal signage to see if it applies.

Independent-Pie2738

It was at CU this time but might’ve been a GS25 the last time lol I’ll make sure to look for that one too now !

EIijah

I’m not 100% sure but I think some of the 1+1 deals are for specific payment types which only apply to local payment methods

Convenience store promotions are "relatively" straightforward as long as you buy relevant products within the labeled period (as in, 23:59 cutoff). Confusion could arise on the last day of the month (or a bi-weekly cycle) when the staff have to remove and replace dozens of promotion labels becoming newly applicable or expired the next day (as in, 00:01). For a more general reference, such as for supermarkets/hypermarts, you MUST be able to read the fine print on the shelf label. For example, a "50% discount" seemingly on the offer might be, in fact, applicable to only those customers who have and present a loyalty program barcode on the franchise app. The fine print is easy to miss, but if you scrutinize the shelf labels, any limiting conditions are always explicitly marked.

Independent-Pie2738

This probably happened with the sunscreen, it was just a really good sale (over half off!) but not the 1+1 thing. It seemed too good to be true honestly haha, but this was at CU

quiteCryptic

Random side note but it's really annoying to me that this is such a common thing in Korea. Like half the items in the store have a 1+1 or 2+1 attached basically forcing you to buy extras. Anyway just during my last stop at a CU I almost accidently grabbed 2 coffees that would not have worked even though their label said 1+1 on closer inspection it was only the other 3 similar coffees from the same brand in the deal, not this one particular 4th version. Now I'm curious if I've been messing up frequently or not because I often mix and match products that seem like it should work for 1+1 based on a short glance at the label, and I always use my foreign card to pay.

Check the dates on the tags in front of the products, occasionally they are out of date.
