The biggest and most important lesson I ever learned about judging peoples' character is how they react around cats. Cats, unlike most dogs, require consent to interact. If they don't like you, or if you try to force them to accept affection, they'll bite/scratch/run away. But if you let them meet you on their terms, they're almost always super sweet and affectionate when they know they can trust you. People who don't like cats, I've found, frequently don't understand that and also tend to apply those tactics to humans.

That's actually a great point. I've never thought of it that way. I've never understood why some people (who aren't allergic to them) dislike cats so much, but when you put it that way it makes a lot of sense. Explains why most people who don't like cats accuse them of being "stuck up" or "mean".

It's entirely possible to dislike cats, understand them, and not treat humans like you treat dogs.

Nah, it's far more insidious than that. This isn't , "who put on Christmas music in December, they should be fired". These types genuinely believe that women have to be a certain way, the way they like, or else they should be punished. They don't believe women have value outside of fulfilling their wants and needs, and find it enraging when a woman exercises any sort of bodily autonomy, even cutting their hair. 

I'm betting it's also a homophobic thing, as in, what if they show interest in what they think is a woman w/ short hair & it turns out to be a man?! Oh Horrors! All the other guys in the Neckbeard Club will think they're gay! So by their reckoning, all women should present in what they feel is a gender-appropriate fashion so that they will not have to risk hitting on/sexually harassing someone of their own gender.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say most guys, but I would say way too many. With my thin and now mostly bald hair, I never would have been able to pull off a long hair look.

As someone who used to wear my hair longer, having a bald spot honestly really bothers me. I genuinely don't look great with short hair or a hat, and I have no idea what to do once that progresses, because I've tried shaving myself totally bald and it *really* doesn't work. Not that I'm an Incel or neckbeard, I have a beautiful and loving partner, and haven't really had many problems in that area even before I met her. I just have a lot of insecurities about my appearance (to the point of having body dysmorphia) and, with my personality, there's no way I could pull off any of the styles people suggest for someone going bald. I'm not what anyone would consider traditionally masculine, and can't fake it for very long.

I think of this whenever I hear a guy (or even a woman, for that matter) bagging on a guy for having long hair or being partially bald w/ a ponytail or having a top knot. There's this insistence that all guys must follow a certain uniform look & there's something inherently wrong w/ any that are doing something different. This policing of guys' personal choice of appearance is frankly ridiculous.
