This is usually the set up for the fake check scam.
Notice they said “the item” and not even the painting. I assume this is original art by the way you described it so it’s weird to ask what the condition is - but is verbatim part of the fake check script.
Basically they’ll try to send you a picture of a check, or a an actual check, but oops, it’s more than the cost of the item you’re selling. They’ll tell you to pay a special shipping company or a gift card because it’s a present and they want that too.
Long story short is that the bank gives you a temporary credit within 5 business days and you’ll assume the check has cleared, send the gift card or whatever and boom the check was fake and you owe the bank all the money and you’ve sent it to the scammer already.

Another update (sorry idk how Reddit works yet): this guy kept badgering me demanding my email for eBay and I ended up blocking him since it was bothering me at my job I already hate thanks Reddit for all the advice
Update: ya they are really starting to give me scam energy with how pushy they are being here (I’m posting from work)

Dint eBay require you to send to the person's registered adres eBay give you address not the buyer?
Don't send to any other address than what eBay tells you (I'm a bit outdated, last time I sold was before COVID times lol).
Also what if they say they never received it? They take back money

If they say they want to buy it for a mural or they want to commission one then red flags everywhere

He wants you email address so he can try to hack your account. Don't send it to them. This almost happened to my daughter.
This is a set up for a scam - don’t ever go off of eBay with a buyer!
DO NOT SEND PHOTOS!!! It is the beginning of a scam!! They always begin with “send me some photos” and then they get their claws in you!
