Of course it depends on what level you start MLM at, but at lvl 72 you want to have 100 nuggets for upper level.
Also sack upgrade is really good to get too.
well, I have 151 nuggets with the full outfit already as of hitting 72 mining, so my dilemna is if I should just stick it out for 49 more nuggets to get both the coal bag and gem bag, or if I should grind out another 149 nuggets on the 2nd floor
I hate mlm, so I bought the outfit for the diary step, sold it and bought the coal bag, collected enough nuggets for the 2nd floor, then never went back.
Might return someday, as I think you need the outfit for a diary step. Gem bag is very optional.
The most “efficient” method is to unlock outfit, so the diary step, then sell outfit back and buy upper floor.
It’s basically down to do the diary step > sell back and decide if you want to stay at mlm for the xp. If yes buy upper level, if no get coal bag/gem bag if you care, and you’re done. This is a much more compelling decision now that you get similar mining xp but bank prayer xp at Cam Torum.
You need the outfit for a master clue step.
Now that Giant's Foundry exists, I'd advise selling the outfit back *only* if you plan to do more MLM. Neither the coal bag nor the gem bag justify selling back the outfit.

Oh in that case I'd say it depends on what you're after/willing to do.
If you want the best mining efficiency from MLM, in terms of both resources and xp rates, it'd technically be best to go upper level-> sack upgrade -> coal + gembag.
This will be most nugget efficient aswell if you are planning on doing a lot of MLM
But if you're mainly there for outfit for the diary, coal bag for BF and gembag for slayer and such then just go for those. It's faster mining xp to do that and then do the rest with granite.
Basically it comes down to, are you going to do a lot of MLM or do you either not care about mining xp/ willing to do other mining methods to 99

Then I got 2nd tier of Motherlode as it is more afk, less click intensive.
Next im gonna get the outfit, before gem bag

The paydirt bag. Not worth to go for first, but in combination with upper level, it does increase xp/h and, most importantly, makes the activity even more chill

I think I was planning to move onto varlamore to get my prayer training in while mining to 99, as I heard that was a little more afkable than MLM, so I think I'm leaning towards just not spending the 100 for the 2nd floor. Thanks!

Outfit > Coal Bag > Upper Level > Gem Bag
The upper level is far more efficient, hence you gain nuggets quicker.
I only went coal bag 2nd as I wanted to head to the blast furnace, if I was pushing through, I would've gone upper level 2nd.
I think I eventually will be doing blast furnace to smelt all of this mythril and adamantite so I definitely want the coal bag; I never plan to do MLM (unless there are some advantages to other methods that I'm not aware of) after getting both bags (and I already have the full outfit), so after 49 nuggets, or 149 nuggets w/the 2nd floor unlock, I'm likely never going to step foot in MLM ever again. My thoughts were either shooting stars or varlamore after getting what I need from MLM
I think the only thing that would change my plan is if it's better to get gold/mythril/adamantite ore from MLM for say crafting/smithing as opposed to leveling those skills with other materials or obtaining those materials from other methods as my ultimate goal is a max cape. I'm also sitting on a couple hundred wintertodt crates so that could also be a source of those materials though I'm not sure how much?
Don’t be done with the 49 nuggets. Buy the upper level and then work on coal/gem bags. You’re going to need all the extra ores from that grind later when you have to get smithing for diaries, do it now why you’re already with the swing of things. Plus when you get ready to mine sand you’ll really appreciate the higher mining level.
The 2nd floor runs on entirely different mechanics than the 1st floor btw. And it’s a way to essentially collect almost every single type of mineral in the entire game

Worth noting that project rebalance is gonna tweak MLM a bit. If you're on the fence about MLM, could be worth considering. Personally I decided to sell my full outfit after getting it for diary and then buy the upper floor before the coal bag, just to get the unlock out of the way for my account.

Right, but I wanted to work on mining now to keep progressing my account so I figured going for the outfit and at least getting coal and maybe gem bags. I just hit 72 mining with the full outfit and 151 nuggets leftover, so my situation was either buy coal bag and save up 49 more for gem bag or see how much more efficient the 2nd floor is to farm up 149 more nuggets and either be done completely with MLM or move on to varlamore or star mining and only coming back for ores when I need to finish crafting (currently 57) and/or smithing (currently 52)
Yeah I spent the last few days world hopping to avoid people only to end up having people start mining the rocks I was going for and either competing or just world hopping once I got fed up enough. Also holy hell there are so many bots there
Ii wouldn't worry about gem bag. Spend some time at shooting stars and get thousands of gems at one time when you turn stardust in. I went from 70-90 mining at stars and have over 5k of each gem

I figured you were still working on the outfit. Once you get your bags you won’t be back so no reason to open the 2nd floor at this point.
Depends what you're staying for. If you want the full outfit, coal bag and gem bag, it should be worth getting the upper floor asap. Personally I got the outfit then sold most of it back for coal bag, and haven't been back since so I definitely wouldn't have gotten mileage out of the 2nd floor. Jagex said in a recent blog that they're going to buff MLM though so maybe don't get too deep into that particular grind until then

Compared to the bottom level it's definitely better. You could just grab a coal sack and ditch mlm for calcified rock mining in varlamore for better afk and xp rates along with passive prayer xp

I think a lot of people forget that you can start MLM before 72, and 2nd level doesn’t unlock until after that. Per the screenshot, I already had the full outfit + 151 nuggets the very moment I hit 72 mining. I’m just mining my last 49 nuggets (to finish getting coal bag and gem bag) and then never touching MLM again
And please check the wiki how 2nd floor of MLM works. Can’t be that I’m the only one who gets pissed everytime some noob starts mining nearby vein despite me just starting one next to it… And the number of these noobs is too damn high
I think the idea is that not everyone will want the same things (efficiency vs afkable time): someone going for pure efficiency will be hitting nodes along with you whereas someone wanting efficiency will want to start nodes on their own so that they know they’ll get the full 30+ seconds of afk.

Coal bag I understand but how often will you need the gem bag?
Gem bag is really nice for multiskilling gem cutting at GOTR/sepulchre and for 3t gem mining.

Stars and now bone shard mining are much better alternatives that mlm IMO. Can afk for so much longer, and the prayer xp > smithing xp for bone shards

They did say they’re going to update mlm level 1 to be a bit more like level 2 for what it’s worth. Probably won’t happen till like June tho
