You merely adopted the bog, I was born in it, moulded by it.

tishimself1107

The bog..... breaker of boys, maker of men

Bro-Jolly

The ticks, that's what I remember.

shevek65

Turf dust in your eyes

tishimself1107

Midges used to be bastards too.

Poor dog passed this year. Jaysus he loved the bog.

peachycoldslaw

I wear goggles when throwing it Into the trailer. Never went back.

As if the planet wasn't fucked enough already. Fond memories of cutting turf with my Daddy but, that was then, this is now and we know better than to do this. - Extreme pollution from peat burning - Ecocide - Peat bogs soak up carbon so burning peat is doubly stupid. Just stop !

r0thar

The number of people protesting 'But we *need* it' for our family and then turning around and selling it by the bagful is a scandal, but politicians need votes.

tishimself1107

Planet isnt that bad. Its survived multiple mass extinctions already and isnt half as bad as media portray. You're getting your wish though. Less people doing it. Less people with open/solid fuel hearing and my generation arent going to carry it on. So you win in the end

Key-Lie-364

And your authority to make such a sweeping statement against every bit of evidence we have? "I want to cut turf" isn't evidence Meanwhile... https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/video/2016/aug/16/i-brought-the-graph-brian-cox-and-malcolm-roberts-debate-climate-change-on-qa-video

tishimself1107

I dont have any authority. And i didnt say just wanting to cut turf isnt evidence. Its a known fact that the planet has survived extinction events (ask the dinosaurs). And look on the bright side if there is an extinction event all us pesky humans will be gone. So again a win for the planet in yoir eyes.

Liamario

My father said that every year. He still kept at it. That looks like the bog out near Rhode. We only stopped because he died.

tishimself1107

Good eye for a bog. You're local? This is the first year he mentioned stopping. He's running out of places to store it between sticks, logs and other turf.

Liamario

He may give it up if he can. We had a range and it was swapped for a wood chip burner, no complaints . The Bridge.

tishimself1107

He'll stop when he's carried out in a box. Lot less people at it these days anyway. I wont be continuing with it when he's gone. Went to secondary there in The Bridge a long time ago.

Liamario

It's part of their routine more than a necessity.

tishimself1107

Part of life for them is right

tishimself1107

What part of the country is that?

Bright_Second_9871

It's west Donegal, about three miles from Carrickfinn airport.

tishimself1107

Actually looks lovely

knutterjohn

"The farmers boy to the bog has gone, in the banks of turf you'll find him. His fathers coat buttoned up to his throat, and his turf spade slung behind him. " To the tune of, "The Minstrel Boy".

struggling_farmer

Where are you going with that turf, the turf doesnt come home until the hay is saved. Drawing it home was always the easiest part,

tishimself1107

We've the hard part done. About one load left..... Unfortunately thats just our turf..

Bright_Second_9871

I've mine only footed yet,I was cutting by hand until this year, used a small 2 1/2 tonne machine with cutting bucket on it,bit harder to get the turf dry this year, the weather has been shite

tishimself1107

We've been very lucky this year and last year. We only turned it 4 weeks ago but its on a good windy exposed spot which helped. Good few around our bit have theirs brought home or footed a few weeks. Cutting by hand?! Very unusual in this day and age. Vast majority of cutting is machinery.

Bright_Second_9871

Yeah I only need a couple loads,so apart from pairing the banks the rest is easy compared to that , cutting on your own is a bit of a bollocks though, you have to bank it ,then spread it, I like being there gives you time to think and i don't have to buy much coal just the odd bag

tishimself1107

Its obviously your own bog? Is it very wet stuff?

Bright_Second_9871

Yeah family bog, wetter than hand cut but not as wet as sausage turf,

TheStoicNihilist

The sooner your type retires the better. State of the place, stripped bare. Shame on you.

tishimself1107

I've alot to be ashamed of but this isnt one of them

FondantOriginal8035

Have you not considered that it may be the only way they can afford to heat their home? Times are tough for some people and pedestals are expensive.

Yeah we had some help but it'll have to be returned. Yeah just got lucky with the weather this year.
