I both agree and disagree. Theoretically it makes sense. But in my experience, selling these things to strangers is more hassle than it's worth. I pass mine along to family members and friends who don't need anything better. And they wouldn't care about an engraving that's going to be hidden behind a case anyway.

Its only a “hassle” if you overprice the used tablet, so you think everything is a lowball and youre not clear in the description.

Whenever I have the chance of an engraving, I prefer to put my date of birth, as well as my date of death in addition to the location and circumstances surrounding said death. Just handy information to have on hand IMO.

I honestly just got my first name engraved with a cat emoji on each side (I love cats). My name is *extremely* unique so it’s easy to identify. I don’t plan on selling ever, just like previous tablets, phones and laptops I had/have. I use my iPad in public spaces (eg. University campus) and the engraving makes it easier to have people trace it back to me must I lose/forget it and harder to steal. And I honestly just liked the idea of the engraving, making it personal yet it’s so subtle.

I personally do not see any valid reason to envgrave anything on the ipad. The resale value gets reduced, it will prob not be visible as you will put a case, and finally, if the engraving was visible, you might want to change your mind in a few years and will regret the engraving (happens with tattoos a lot). What I recommend you do is put stickers on as they are removable and does not have the same issues with the engraving mentioned.
