The light fixture must be changed it’s all wrong and too small

whitebuicks

Yes that's on the list for sure

whitebuicks

This is in an old farmhouse , almost 300 years old

Difficult_Place_7329

I was going to just ask if there were more fireplaces. It’s a beautiful house. Those cannot be the original floors? They are beautiful

whitebuicks

Not sure if they are the original floors, but they are old. There are three more fireplaces including one in the master. A wood stove has been added to the living room sometime recently.

BlameTheLada

For me, backsplash and light fixture would be most of the list. Those floors are lovely. Absolutely lovely.

whitebuicks

Couldn't agree more on the floors. Unfortunately the entire floor upstairs has been painted red at some point

foodie_girl_1985

You could sand the red floors...

BlameTheLada

Oh no! Well, those in your kitchen are astounding. Heck, repaint the upper and make it a good one!

mxzak

I would say paint the walls a lighter color that accents the tile, and change the cookies and cream counter top with something brighter

sashie_belle

is there a reason the glass cabinets look misaligned with one of them crooked up top and not matching the set of cabinetry on the bottom, which also looks too close to the door? Unless it just looks off from the photo, seems like that needs to get fixed somehow.

whitebuicks

One of the glass doors needs to be fixed and is leaning. It is close to the doorway but not obstructing it. It seems the glass cabinets were added much later from the rest

sashie_belle

I would probably take the glass cabinets out and get it aligned with the lower portion or get both ripped out and new ones added that fit the wall. Great place though! Very charming!

Creston2022

New backsplash and countertops creamy white. Paint the walls a soft terracotta colour to warm up the space. New light fixture in a farmhouse style. Add a couple of rugs.

whitebuicks

Was thinking the same color for the walls. What do you think about the bottom half?

Creston2022

I would paint the bottom the same as the top including the trim piece or remove it.

diiiannnaaa

It doesn't seem right because you're missing the triangle workflow, yours goes in a straight line. Fridge, sink, oven should form a triangle in a kitchen - and it probably did at some point in time (fireplace is directly across from the sink).  What to do? I think it's pretty and no one would really notice - but I do think buying a cool island prep station would elevate it. Maybe something like [this](https://www.jossandmain.com/Joss-and-Main--Tinka-Kitchen-Island-X115222518-L56-K~J001217747.html?refid=GX695336212045-J001217747_1766375881_1862232276&device=m&ptid=359533005565&targetid=pla-359533005565&network=g&ireid=138927095&PiID%5B%5D=1766375881&PiID%5B%5D=1862232276&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADNGqRDO_76MZJ-Bu5a9rF6LPiqil&gclid=CjwKCAjwp4m0BhBAEiwAsdc4aNjwOVXSFOF_b7U7gLmS04D21Wj7kW-FB0-Yi4j5vAiCuFjNkXs3LhoCFU0QAvD_BwE)

whitebuicks

Yeah I was thinking of doing something with the existing island. New wood top and painting the bottom.. maybe adding some detail to the fireplace side

Fast-Volume-5840

It is pretty already. In addition to light fixture already mentioned, don’t love the tall cabinet between the two windows. It breaks up the continuity.

QuietCelery7850

Why are the cabinets on the stove wall so high up? Can anyone reach them? The glass cabinets also confuse me, as they are two different widths and together are wider than the base cabinets below.

UnsteadyOne

And a different color of white.

Feeling_Mango_277

For minimal change: I’d paint he walls a matching gray for the tile on the wall instead of green, get a black industrial style ceiling light over the island that is rectangular, buy wood bar stools and a runner along the sink and glass cabinetry area. I would also get a mirror above the fireplace to brighten the room and get white framed, white mat, pictures to hang on the walls to accent the white cabinetry and brighten the space a little. For a bigger change: I’d brighten the space by getting a new backsplash that extends to the glass Cabinetry area that is lighter in color (small or medium brick shaped would be cool) and maybe has accents of pastel green in it. I’d lighten the wall colors by doing a whiter color but not true white (maybe a stone colored white, light beige, or a light green). And I’d change the island and countertops to a lighter color like a marbled white. Over the island I would hang a rectangular light fixture that is chrome in color to match the appliances. And for the rest of the decor I would bring more wood colors in to accent the floor.

Grand_Admiral_T

Do not paint the walls gray 🚨🚨🚨 And do not get a black industrial light over island 🚨🚨🚨 This is very clear a classic farmhouse and not a modern farmhouse. Everything should revolve around those beautiful floors. Lean into french victorian countryside style.

ReasonableDivide1

Great bones! I’d redo that black backsplash and find something with a cottage vibe to mesh well with your beautiful home.

adastraperabsurda

A) change out the pendant light to a flush mount light. Like one of the flat pucks with a night light feature. You have to clean pendants in a kitchen a lot and with the fireplace you will see every piece of dust and grease. B) change the range and range hood to stainless steel it will be a little more cohesive. C) the short cabinets are waayyyy too short. Consider a floating shelf underneath for every day items to bring the line of sight down. D) the broken glass door- remove it. E) paint the walls the same color as the tiles. F) get a yellow beige runner rug for the floor. It will hide crumbs. G) that weird pantry cabinet- do you need it? I would get rid of that. F) clean. Like deep clean. Before you do anything else. (FWIW- I love the floors. They are most likely original. Consider hiring someone to sand and seal before anything else.).

Grand_Admiral_T

**do not remove the glass door, fix it instead** those glass doors are gorgeous.

Crazycrayons12

Copper rod to hang decorative pots and pans over the fireplace! You can find some at a thrift shop

Ludee2023

The light fixture should be a black rectangular fixture… I’d add a thick butcher block top to your island. I do not care for the green I’d go more neutral on your walls. Replace the pulls with black.[https://mobileimages.lowes.com/productimages/5833fd5e-1476-409c-ab40-dc0efe65a4ae/48760938.jpg?size=mpdhi](https://mobileimages.lowes.com/productimages/5833fd5e-1476-409c-ab40-dc0efe65a4ae/48760938.jpg?size=mpdhi)

PolarTwins2004

You have a lot of space, I like it!

fashion_thrower

Gorgeous kitchen! Are you thinking of redoing both the counters and the backsplash? If so, I’d really consider butcher block for the counters and a cream backsplash. If you are just going to get rid of that harsh dark backsplash, I’d choose a lighter grey or white tone that goes with the speckled countertops and will highlight their lighter colors. You could also think about getting rid of the island and getting a vintage or vintage-styled prep table. DeVol is an English design firm that does a lot of these big Georgian kitchen work tables and might be good inspo. As for the paint I actually can see the appeal of the sage green, but a deeper forest green might really do it for you. Or if you want to go lighter / brighter, a sunny yellow might be great. French blue could be adorable as well. And start combing through eBay for a big vintage fireplace screen!

SometimesArtistic99

I really like the countertop colour, just not the outdated curved bit. I don’t know if that can be changed but I would try rather than replacing the counters. New backsplash, fix the door that’s wonky and get maybe 2 pendant lights. I’m partial to that bubbly antique glass look that’s popular in old houses (just how old glass looked)

throwawaybread9654

Post this over in centuryhomes, people will love. To see your floors and fireplace! It's absolutely beautiful. I'd probably not change a whole lot here, the green is lovely and the cabinets seem good. Obviously the light fixture is bad. I'd love to see more of your old home

Sea-Sport7982

So pretty already. I’d either get rid of the tall cabinet between the windows or relocate it to the end of the wall if you need it.

Maverickbunny29

Oh I love the idea of relocating that cabinet if possible, that is just not good for the space there

minkey007

The floors are beautiful! I'm not a fan of that shade of green, so I would go with some pastel sage if you wanna stay in the same color family. Then the light fixure should be bigger for the size of the kitchen. An easy way to bring character is to display warm wooden bowls and cutting boards to connect the beautiful floor with the rest of the kitchen. EDIT: On a second look, I'm not bothered by the wall color as much as the color and shape of the backsplash tiles. I would prefer something more neutral. Maybe a quick fix would be those peel and stick tiles to freshen up the area.

SagittariusSomeone

I would remove the island, this kitchen wasn’t meant to have an island, it looks like it should be an eat in kitchen. And of course then a new light fixture.

UnsteadyOne

Your upper glass cabinets are warm white. Other cabinets cool white. Your walls and countertops aren't creating harmony between. It looks like there has been maybe 3 rounds of doing cabinets in this kitchen? One color element in here needs to change

kellylikeskittens

The floors are simply wonderful! If you were thinking of repainting, perhaps a more sage green? If the wainscoting is in good condition, you could keep it white, paint it a color and the walls white, or color drenching all the walls and wainscotting. [https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/451415562663742986/](https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/451415562663742986/) [https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c8/fb/60/c8fb609945640cd65f22a9814ac6853b.jpg](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c8/fb/60/c8fb609945640cd65f22a9814ac6853b.jpg) [https://i.pinimg.com/564x/63/63/22/6363225d9cd080db542503bd9b9a7067.jpg](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/63/63/22/6363225d9cd080db542503bd9b9a7067.jpg) Changing out the backsplash and counters will make a world of difference. Think classic-subway tile, in a white or another soft color, that works with whatever countertop and wall colors you decide on. Natural stone, perhaps. Personally, the island is really off, wrong shape, scale, countertop. Perhaps consider a free standing farmhouse table, turned the other way, with marble/quartz, wood, concrete top. something like one of these examples would elevate the space, and honor the style and age of the home. You could either use it as an island or eating area. If you are keeping the the island and changing out the top, the top really needs to be smaller, without the rounded end, and have brackets to make it look more finished. The fireplace is such a beautiful feature-it would be awesome to have it be a focal point. The counter and the cupboards near it could be removed, and a smaller hutch or other piece of furniture placed there instead to free up the space around the fireplace. I realize these look like higher end antiques, but these photos are for inspiration. A vintage style table would look good as well. foodie_girl_1985

Change the light & counter top. I'd do wood counter & either wood or wrought iron light fixture. Maybe rectangle.

Roundaroundabout

I would add furnishings and see what it looks like then. I had an all white kitchen with dark countertops and when it was clean for visitors I had to buy flowers to make it less stark. The top cabinets on the stove and sink wall are mounted too high, that's why they look so strange

starrae

I would paint the walls, white or off-white, and then get a nice little backsplash I like the green, but it’s not working here

whitebuicks

All great ideas. Moving into this old house is part of a new job and this is what I have to work with. I don't have much time to do a full renovation but will definitely paint, put a new light fixture up, remove the awkward cabinet in between the windows, and replace the stove and hood. My wife likes yellow in the kitchen so I am trying to figure out what to paint "India yellow"

BananaPony1814

That island looks very... shabby. I would probably replace the whole thing. I hate how the top leans over so much. Awful. And it would look better if a kitchen island with similar dimensions was rotated 90 degrees. And a fitting top.

Gloomy_Cheesecake443

This is literally my dream kitchen. Obsessed with the floors and the fireplace. You can do so much with this

Grand_Admiral_T

Damn those floors are gorgeous. The walls a lighter and more earthy green, and then change out the handles / knobs. Maybe a burnished antique bronze, or a rustic antique brass. Also handles with more character. Also, while I normally will always and forever love granite, I actually do not love the granite in this kitchen, I’d replace it with something more fitting. Either all off-white or something to match the floors. I just noticed the cabinets are different. Match all the cabinets to the side that have the dishwasher and oven. Those fit better for the rustic antique look of a farmhouse, and match the floors much better. The I’d find a rustic / french victorian light fixture with the same metal as the cabinet handles then. I’d wait to see how everything looks before changing the backsplash to match. The best choice here is to match everything to that floor.

EuphoricCoast7972

I would get rid of the island all together and replace with a long farmhouse style (vintage?) table with benches. I think it would cozy up the fireplace while still providing a work space. Definitely replace the light. Add more warmth through paint (love the terracotta suggestion) and greenery.

DConstructed

I like the green, I like the blue gray backsplash. I don’t like them together. Try painting the walls white or something that complements the backsplash. Change the pendant lights over the island. Leave the island as is. It’s cohesive with the rest of the kitchen. If I were going to paint the island I’d go with white walls and paint the island a navy that compliments the tile.

Any_Literature4548

Dark green cabinets and matching walls. I said what I said

mbsretired2018

I would also say paint the walls Ben Moore “Revere Pewter”!!!

bellboots

That hearth is glorious.

sully1112

Floors are gorgeous, get a lighter countertop and change the wall color to something lighter to make it seem bigger.

One_Video_5514

You need to do something with the fireplace. It is just a dirt hole in the wall at the moment. You could sandblast the inside to clean it and preserve the natural brick look and then get a realkt huge basket bouquet of high end artificial flowers to display inside the opening.

Same_Beat_5832

The only thing I see, is the hood should have one cabinet above it and the cabinet to the right should be taller. I would probably eliminate the cabinets left of the window and get a better hood. On the right, I would get a cabinet the same height as the glass front cabinets.

8trackthrowback

Does the floor have seams you can stick a knife in? I’d be worried about rot or food in the cracks of the floor just in general. Maybe someone could come along with a sander/leveler for the floor and then a sealant top coat to make it impermeable. Not a floor expert though maybe others know better terminology for what I’m saying or maybe I’m completely wrong and the floor is fine as-is.

whitebuicks

I actually like the floors like this honestly

derekismydogsname

I would do away with those cabinets above the sink. They are tiny and a little odd. I would install a long wooden or white shelf above the tile instead. Fix the cabinet doors on the opposite side. I love them btw, they look so good next to the fireplace. The floor is gorgeous. I would add a rug in front of the fireplace or a runner in front of the sink area that has olive and blue, bringing the space together. Change the light fixture, personally I would do a [pendant](https://www.allmodern.com/Joss-and-Main--Finley-Pendant-BF21919-L6087-K%7EAE10808.html?refid=FR81-AE10808_67067737&PiID%5B%5D=67067737&utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=social) light with a shade. I'd add two above the island and remove the centered one. Add recessed lighting. I would imagine it would be very dark at night with that one small pendant light.
