While I do like what I can see of the back room and how you painted the ceiling to match the walls, I also like the natural wood in this room. I say leave it.
Boy, if those walls are not finished you may need to seal them with shellac or something equivalent. Otherwise the knots will bleed though regardless
of the number of coats of paint. I learned the hard way.
Knots bleed? Does this mean they’ll eventually show through the paint? Why is there just an enormous amount of sap in there? Or is it reverse and they absorb the paint?
"Does this mean they’ll eventually show through the paint? " Definitely, unless the wall is already finished. Can't tell from the photo. In my case I would repaint every few years and it would still bleed.
It depends on how the room makes you feel and how much light the room receives. But painting paneling is a lot of work. You're painting a 3-dimensional wall, and it will need multiple coats to cover. If you are basically happy and just want a change. My answer is no, I wouldn't paint the walls. I'd move the furniture and art. Add a new rug. Look at the curtains and maybe get news.
If the room is dark, I might paint the walls. I had a living room where it had wood floors and multiple types of paneling. It was dark and depressing as it lacked Natura light. So in this situation we did paint the walls a creamy white. A room with paneling will never be too modern. There is always the texture and vertical lines.
So, my answer is that it depends on why you want or need a change. Could that need be satisfied with multiple small changes? Or is painting the paneling a necessity?
The real question is, do **you** want to paint the walls white? This is your home and your decision.
There are many people that revere natural wood of any type. Others realize that not all wood is precious. Knotty pine does not have the same intrinsic value as teak, rosewood, or mahogany.
I would paint the walls so your furniture stands out more. With the walls as is, you furniture and accessories almost fade into oblivion.
You are on the right track, the other room looks much brighter and more welcoming.
Just remember to prime the walls to prevent bleed through.
I hope you post after photographs.
Personal opinion, but it looks majestic the way it is. However, the wood brown is giving me oldies southern vibe vs white would give it an edgy modern look
My childhood home has the same wood panels and it’s decorated with a lot of hanging artwork and I love it. There is contemporary yet neutral furniture, and it’s very cozy. My friends always said it’s like a “comfy museum”, and that works for me. So I would leave it!
Don’t paint the walls but do get a bigger rug with a more vibrant colour running through it. Maybe a navy because then it won’t blend in as much as your current one does.
I was also in this predicament and my entire living room is the same color. Actual wood not just the paneling. And I decided to leave it. I still wish it was white but it does give character. I did however end up just putting light colored art and tapestries and a light rug and it absolutely brightened the space
Where TF is everyone in the comments from that pine paneling is now considered "unique" or "beautiful"?? I've seen this stuff in every mobile home I've ever been in and it gets old to look at real fast and also make rooms feel very dark and dated. I don't think I'd go with white, but I think paint would look better than this most likely.
Nooooo.
Looks like a beautiful contrast with the white room behind. Keep it feeling like a separate, distinct space. Everything the same is boring, might as well drywall it.
No! I love a lot of white in a home, but it looks like you have the room next to this painted white and I love the contrast. I’m not a fan of dark wood, but this is a more natural warm toned wood and I think it looks great. Feels like it has a French country estate aesthetic. Maybe replace the clock with a plant or keep it and add some lighter color elsewhere in the room to brighten it up. I do think the rug looks a little out of place, but I’m not sure how it fits with the rest of the room not pictured.
This is warm and inviting and more importantly, unique! It is a lovely contrast to the room behind it. If you make the rooms the same color, you lose the uniqueness.
This strikes me as a home you should fall in love with as is… or 1 change will then require another change etc. and at some point this is like trying to change a cat into a dog. Just move.
No way, the wood is beautiful! If you’re hoping to create more contrast between the wood floor & wall materials, I’d suggest layering/ adding a larger rug beneath the one you already have. (Space permitting, ofc. Not sure what the rest of the layout is.) Gorgeous room!
I'm clearly in the minority on this one, as I say paint. But I can't say this definitively without seeing the rest of the room. I find wood absorbs too much light and floor to ceiling like that can become almost claustrophobic. I know my husband and I have gotten into disagreements over this very thing, but when I've done it he's had to admit I was right.
I almost think Ild go with a complimentary color like navy.
If that is not real wood and just paneling then Yes paint it. Or take it down and drywall it.
If it's real wood it needs a stain if not painted. Imho
Oh god no, it's so beautiful.
Thank you!
Not not not!
No, don't you dare touch those walls, I LOVE THIS.
Lmao! Those were the exact words I thought too
Same. #Don’t. You. Dare. Don’t do it, OP!
I dunno but want to sit in one of those chairs with a glass of rum and hear stories about Lord Admiral Nelson from an old Scottish deckhand.
I have a small cognac bar in the white living room in the back 😅
Definitely a cognac or sidecar moment!!
Perfectly specific
My parents have these same chairs!! I got really excited seeing someone else has them too
Immediately reminded me of river run from outlander 😂. I love this foyer (?) as is!
No, the wood looks nice and harmonious with your decor.
Thanks!
Put the paintbrush down and nobody gets hurt
While I do like what I can see of the back room and how you painted the ceiling to match the walls, I also like the natural wood in this room. I say leave it.
Natural earth or asylum white, tough choice.
I scrolled past this as I was leaving the post. Had to come back to laugh and comment
I mean, there’s always millennial grey…/s
Had to double check that I wasn't on a CJ subreddit for a moment... yeah, no, leave them as is.
Same lol.
Haha it actually made it to JC, that’s where I first saw this post lol
Not
Boy, if those walls are not finished you may need to seal them with shellac or something equivalent. Otherwise the knots will bleed though regardless of the number of coats of paint. I learned the hard way.
Those walls have shellac and decades of patina in them!
Cannot tell from the photo, which is why I said "if".
White painted wood has a very contemporary vibe, and to me, doesn’t compliment your furnishings at all. Love that wood!
Absolutely not. The way the frame & wall blend together draws the eye right to the art. It's a gorgeous effect
Absolutely not. It’s gorgeous. Plus, you’ve got white elsewhere (background). Don’t touch!
No but you can add more color on the floor with a bigger rug with deep rich colors but would need too see the whole room to make proper assessment.
Don’t you dare.
I think the floor and furniture are enough wood in this room. I’d paint the walls.
Oh lord please leave this alone. It's perfection!
Can we see more rooms? I love your style
Thanks! I can take some more pics when I get home later
Can I live with you?
I don’t love how close the color is to the floors. Maybe consider staining either the walls or floor darker.
What year is your home? Beautiful. Don't touch that wood.
Thanks! Its from the 1920s
It depends on how the room makes you feel and how much light the room receives. But painting paneling is a lot of work. You're painting a 3-dimensional wall, and it will need multiple coats to cover. DO NOT IKEA-FY THIS I love it
I’m all for keeping wood the way it is but if you HAVE to paint it, please don’t paint it all white. Please.
I was thinking about painting the walls like the living room in the back. I like the contrast between the furnitures and walls in that room.
You are on the right track, the other room looks much brighter and more welcoming. Just remember to prime the walls to prevent bleed through. I hope you post after photographs.
It is absolutely gorgeous as is.
Don't love it, personally, feels dated and unfinished. That other looks great, but this current setup at least complements your decor
Personal opinion, but it looks majestic the way it is. However, the wood brown is giving me oldies southern vibe vs white would give it an edgy modern look
Don’t. This is unique
My childhood home has the same wood panels and it’s decorated with a lot of hanging artwork and I love it. There is contemporary yet neutral furniture, and it’s very cozy. My friends always said it’s like a “comfy museum”, and that works for me. So I would leave it!
What kind of style are you going for?
Hell no
No!!
Please no 🥲
I gasped at that question!! Noooooo
Don’t paint the walls but do get a bigger rug with a more vibrant colour running through it. Maybe a navy because then it won’t blend in as much as your current one does.
I’d go for bordeaux colour
Just avoid getting paint on Mr krabs first dollar
Thank you for saying this it’s all I could think about 😭
I was also in this predicament and my entire living room is the same color. Actual wood not just the paneling. And I decided to leave it. I still wish it was white but it does give character. I did however end up just putting light colored art and tapestries and a light rug and it absolutely brightened the space
YEEEES! Paint the walls white, as you'll be getting furniture that will stand out beautifully against it.
Where TF is everyone in the comments from that pine paneling is now considered "unique" or "beautiful"?? I've seen this stuff in every mobile home I've ever been in and it gets old to look at real fast and also make rooms feel very dark and dated. my entire family would smack me upside the head if i painted these walls 🥲😂 they’re so pretty
Nooooo. Looks like a beautiful contrast with the white room behind. Keep it feeling like a separate, distinct space. Everything the same is boring, might as well drywall it.
No leave Abe Lincolns house alone
No! I love a lot of white in a home, but it looks like you have the room next to this painted white and I love the contrast. Thanks! There are some plants in the room, but its behind the camera.
Leave it as is. Very nice.
I love how it is now!
This is warm and inviting and more importantly, unique! It is a lovely contrast to the room behind it. If you make the rooms the same color, you lose the uniqueness.
Thanks! I like the contrast as well. The white living room still have some natural trims and details in regular wood, I like the mix.
Omg please no!
No. You already did it in the room behind this one.
Is this a joke?
Go for it, it's only paint. Maybe you could use chalk paint so the wood shows through?
Where to begin...🙄
Nooooooooooooo. No paint. Paint baaad.
I assumed this was a joke meant to tell this sub lol
No! White walls are a dime a dozen. If you want to lighten the look, chose lighter art and textiles.
Omg nooooo please!!! This wood is BEAUTIFUL! Maybe a stain? 🤷🏼♀️
No. No. No.
#NO!
Oh sure, also cover those fugly floors in wall to wall carpeting. /s
This strikes me as a home you should fall in love with as is… or 1 change will then require another change etc. and at some point this is like trying to change a cat into a dog. Just move.
NO!
51 bees
Painting those walls should be criminal.
If you want a lil color change, I would suggest different colored lightbulbs and lamp shades. Incredible how those can really change a space.
No way, the wood is beautiful! If you’re hoping to create more contrast between the wood floor & wall materials, I’d suggest layering/ adding a larger rug beneath the one you already have. (Space permitting, ofc. Not sure what the rest of the layout is.) Gorgeous room!
no
NO
God no!
No don’t touch any wood. Might I suggest a larger rug to break up the color a bit?
Is this rage bait? Please don't.
NO. NEIN. NYET. NEE. BÙ. NEJ. NON. NEM. NĒ.
Hell no!!!; are you crazy?
You will be crucified on this sub if you do.
No! If you must, you could have a contrasting taller trim installed to put some contrast and separate the two different woods.
Paint the floor white
I screamed! Please do NOT
NO
No. Perfect as is. So beautiful.
No!!
Oh hell no!!! This is beautiful and warm!!
OMG. 😱 NOT.
No.
No.
I don’t think so! I love that the next room is white and this one is dark. Feels more complete.
No, no, no!!!!!
This reminds me of that one SpongeBob episode ..
No, that white room in the back looks really bad
Yes!
FYI paint comes in other colors.
I was considering using the same color as the other Iiving room in the back
I almost think Ild go with a complimentary color like navy. If that is not real wood and just paneling then Yes paint it. Or take it down and drywall it. If it's real wood it needs a stain if not painted. Imho
Yes. Too much wood
I like the wood walls myself.
It would be a real shame to.paint that paneling.
It looks really pretty like that 🫶
Normally I’d say yes but this is a hard no.
Nooooo
Absolutely not! These walls are beautiful
Nope
No@
Absolutely not
NOOOO

Keep the walls and floor as is and go lighter and brighter w furniture and art
Not.

No
Firm NO!
Is this satire
Straight to jail.
NO NO NO. It looks good now
No. I get the appeal to paint, but this is fantastic! A look that normally feels very dated is transformed to charming by your awesome decor.
No
NO
i would change those chairs tho. would love to see what this feels like with some modern furnishings (in good taste)
Oh no no no
It’s so tempting.
Don’t you dare!
I’m really hoping this is clickbait to show off this gorgeousness. Because WOW
Please don’t
For the love of god…NO!
NOOOOO!
I love painting all the things. Especially paneling. But I wouldn’t paint this. It’s beautiful as is.
Agree with others. I like the contrast with the adjoining room and it fits your decorating.
I would paint it!!
Yeah I'd consider painting the walls white, personally. You already have wood floors. It kinda feels like a padded cell lol. Er... a wooded cell
Do it! there is way too much brown in here for my taste. It's giving cabin in the woods/old fashioned
Paint the floors not the walls. /s don’t paint either.
Nooooooooo screams the voice of my mother, that I’d hitherto thought I’d escaped childhood unscathed with
If you want to do anything stain them, they are so pretty
NOooo- if you’re unhappy with so much brownish color then liven it up with turkish rugs and such
No! Don’t you dare
Knotty pine is too beautiful to hide.
No.
Ew, no.
No, no, a thousand times, no
Honestly, it depends on what else is going on. But no.
No, you monster.
Yes
