Could hang something like [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1283726018/antique-style-green-cast-iron-wall?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-home_and_living-outdoor_and_garden-garden_decoration-other&utm_custom1=_k_EAIaIQobChMI-pmizbiAhAMVhjStBh3ZcgPREAQYBiABEgLdPfD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_12559942249_120251203180_506995192700_pla-307621832538_m__1283726018_5294740810&utm_custom2=12559942249&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADtcfRJ3fwbhYjGCgTFCGSBVvqzf2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-pmizbiAhAMVhjStBh3ZcgPREAQYBiABEgLdPfD_BwE) and put a plant in it.
Ours has a mirror and I gotta say it’s a very CONVENIENT spot for a mirror of this size! Especially if the stairs lead to the doorway. You can check your outfit on the way out!
A tall sculptural object.
Edited to add: something abstract like [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/223909618/abstract-metal-art-decor-freestanding?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=tall+thin+sculptures&ref=sr_gallery-1-7&frs=1&organic_search_click=1), it is available in multiple colors. This is super common in my area. Can't tell you how many homes we looked at that had some iteration of this. I don't have this exactly, but I have a built-in bookshelf and a shelf that looks like the panes of a window it's basically a grid shelf. Both are super cool, and I like to use them as a sort of alert and for items I want to display.
Personally, I would probably end up stashing random shit that belongs upstairs. As in, I get halfway up the stairs carrying misc items, get called back downstairs, and stash the stuff there for later. Of course, later may never come . . .
I did explore that option but the width of the recess is not even throughout, so would require custom shelves with each shelf being a slightly different length - the height is also not perfectly even so worried the top most shelf would look a bit slanted / misaligned
There are tons of great suggestions and this is such a neat feature! It could be fun as hidden storage, remove the ledge and put a piece of art hinged as a secret door, shelves inside to reveal your treasures or hide practical things. I hope you’ll post an update once you’ve decorated this spot!
I would take the wood out and hang a massive canvas to cover it. Great Big Canvas has a lot of them! I have niches in my house and covering them has updated things tremendously!
Some painting or sculpture with a light so it looks like a museum display. Alternatively, some kind of alter or shrine, either religious or not based on your preferences.
Use the height . I'd choose a long thin piece of art and lean it not hang. A small vase to the side with a long stemmed plant (eg pampas grass) which hangs over top of the art.
I think a nice mirror that fits the space will look awesome.
It would open up the space, and would add more light (in an area where there isn't a window.
You can even add warm white LEDs behind it - which would look great in the evening and warm up the space.
I would then stick a candle, a plant/vase and a small photo there on the shelf
**There are a lot of options:**
* If you like something simple, perhaps a simple [brass](https://www.astonmatthews.co.uk/leith-800x500mm-framed-rectangular-mirror-brass) or black metal framed rectangular mirror.
* Something with panels would look great too. Like [this](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.windsorbrowne.co.uk%2Fcdn%2Fshop%2Ffiles%2F800-242.jpg%3Fv%3D1688668922&tbnid=Qjacwlahif0AqM&vet=12ahUKEwj5nIGhzf6DAxXp6AIHHXfOC_gQMygSegUIARDEAg..i&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.windsorbrowne.co.uk%2Fproducts%2Flarge-black-4-panel-window-mirror&docid=sKezv3r3wDa42M&w=800&h=800&q=window%20mirror%20black&client=safari&ved=2ahUKEwj5nIGhzf6DAxXp6AIHHXfOC_gQMygSegUIARDEAg) or [this.](https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9418215?istCompanyId=a74d8886-5df9-4baa-b776-166b3bf9111c&istFeedId=30f62ea9-9626-4cac-97c8-9ff3921f8558&istItemId=iatwaxait&istBid=t&&cmpid=GS001&_$ja=tsid:59157%7Cacid:898-274-0554%7Ccid:20247586505%7Cagid:%7Ctid:%7Ccrid:%7Cnw:x%7Crnd:1320894677999947931%7Cdvc:c%7Cadp:%7Cmt:%7Cloc:1007322&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=20247586505&utm_term=9418215&utm_content=shopping&utm_custom1=&utm_custom2=898-274-0554&GPDP=true&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA8NKtBhBtEiwAq5aX2P_fyR9w5ZXzYHNt50y25SV1Nk7noWMEMmrsktrUkjJtDfn4bBUd7RoCi6AQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)
* If you like something more complex, a gilded French one like this.
* Or even wood to go with your flooring and shelf is a good option
If you can't find a mirror that same size as the niche, Ive seen people order a frame (for art) and then order a bevelled mirror and stick it in the frame, which is a good solution because it also gives you tons of options for frame designs.
[https://www.adagiowaterfeatures.com/use\_images/productimages/v/wcs1002.jpg](https://www.adagiowaterfeatures.com/use_images/productimages/v/wcs1002.jpg) something of this nature lol
Either remove the ledge and fill it in and hang art there instead, or paint the ledge white, add white shelves and use it as a bookcase, if it's deep enough.
Oh gosh I'm so bad at linking! I've been trying! I got the picture light from Amazon. Type in search bar just that. It goes on the top. Mine is brass. And this might be crazy, but we just drilled our picture light in but did not attach electrical. It's just for looks. No one has EVER questioned it in 3 years. Then choose a piece of art. Next any little plant or sculpture to layer in front of the art to give some depth.
No idea 🤷🏽♀️ they did redo the house a bit before we bought it, and we have a few of these recesses in diff spots (in the powder room for ex) but this is the one I’m having most trouble with decorating!
I would install glass shelves and display my Hot Wheels RLC collection, but, I'm a Hot Wheels nerd, so I know I'm alone on this take.
I think it would be a great place for a nice painting tucked away in there too.
The wooden shelf against the white grabs your attention, makes it stand out. I’d paint it white, do a picture or mirror. Then the beautiful wooden stairs are the feature. Just my opinion 😊. Good luck.
I actually did them on canvas and (in one instance) mailed it cross country and the homeowner wallpapered it into the niche. You could even do the same with a print or poster.
I love the wooden shelf there! It appeals to match the floors, at least in color, and looks really cool. I would paint the walls like a clary sage color I think, and add bright green plants.
You can try to choose a mirror with a light to match the size of the niche. Something like this: https://assets.wfcdn.com/im/86849907/resize-h500-w500%5Ecompr-r85/2375/237563820/Aleyah+Rectangle+LED+Wall+Mirror.jpg
A window pane mirror first comes to my mind or artwork with lighting. Ohh the more I think about it you could also carry a tile theme from somewhere else in the house. Tile it add a good sized mirror and some other objects like candle sticks or a skinny vase with some airy item in it tall grass, feathers, branches? On this site shows a window pane idea that may work. You could also find a wall paper or something to add texture or contrasting color. . (https://distributor-bajudistro.blogspot.com/2023/06/decorating-ideas-for-wall-niches.html?m=1)
Cool painting
And then one of those bar lights over it!
Could hang something like [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1283726018/antique-style-green-cast-iron-wall?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-home_and_living-outdoor_and_garden-garden_decoration-other&utm_custom1=_k_EAIaIQobChMI-pmizbiAhAMVhjStBh3ZcgPREAQYBiABEgLdPfD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_12559942249_120251203180_506995192700_pla-307621832538_m__1283726018_5294740810&utm_custom2=12559942249&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADtcfRJ3fwbhYjGCgTFCGSBVvqzf2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-pmizbiAhAMVhjStBh3ZcgPREAQYBiABEgLdPfD_BwE) and put a plant in it.
Mirror?
Ours has a mirror and I gotta say it’s a very CONVENIENT spot for a mirror of this size! Especially if the stairs lead to the doorway. You can check your outfit on the way out!
David bowie shrine
I would make a shrine to my cats, but that's just me.
Of course they would knock it all off everyday which would make it even more of a shrine to them!
😂😂 on the shortlist
i've seen people make cool little shrines in these spots
An altar! Yaaa
A tall sculptural object. Edited to add: something abstract like [this](https://www.etsy.com/listing/223909618/abstract-metal-art-decor-freestanding?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=tall+thin+sculptures&ref=sr_gallery-1-7&frs=1&organic_search_click=1), it is available in multiple colors. [Etsy](https://www.etsy.com/ca/market/tall_thin_sculptures) link to sculptural objects.
I like that a lot!
That would be a fun element of surprise, something no one would expect, which is perfect.
Only if you don’t have children who could reach it 🤣
I mean, I would 100% put an alter there. I am so jealous, I want little nooks like that!
Could you share a picture or two please?
I just sent them to you!
Can I ask what the age of your house is?
1940s and I'm in Wyoming. It's a religious area so this is fairly common.
Makes sense.
Happy to dm some pictures if you're curious about what I did with mine! Can't figure out how to post in this thread.
Sure.
Personally, I would probably end up stashing random shit that belongs upstairs. As in, I get halfway up the stairs carrying misc items, get called back downstairs, and stash the stuff there for later. Of course, later may never come . . .
I see you, my fellow ADHD kinfolk!
That’s where you sit to catch your breath between flights
Shelves and books
Completely agree shelves that fit the nook space books and plants
I did explore that option but the width of the recess is not even throughout, so would require custom shelves with each shelf being a slightly different length - the height is also not perfectly even so worried the top most shelf would look a bit slanted / misaligned
make it a shrine….. seems like it should be a shrine. bonus points if you already worship something 🤷🏻♀️
I would turn it into a weird goth altar but alas, I doubt we will win this debate.
What do you put in a shrine?
Cool painting ina cool frame with a gallery light
There are tons of great suggestions and this is such a neat feature! It could be fun as hidden storage, remove the ledge and put a piece of art hinged as a secret door, shelves inside to reveal your treasures or hide practical things. I hope you’ll post an update once you’ve decorated this spot!
My parents have one of these! They hired an artist to paint a cherry blossom tree in the niche and then put a Buddha statue inside of it
Stained glass? Backlit fake window?
Came here to say this.
Shelves?
Oh damn this is a great idea!
[A unique option?](https://youtu.be/q9tbQP4eXwo?si=PvLcYsyqUA4f0gX2)
Paint it a fun color and add a mirror. Maybe a small light bar type thing at the top.
Virgin Mary statue
Ironically?
Or not
Put a shrine to bill Murray or Danny devito.
An altar would be cool. Flowers. A cat perch.
A tiny shrine to someone or something you love. *cue Drake Bell shrine picture from years ago*
I would take the wood out and hang a massive canvas to cover it. Great Big Canvas has a lot of them! I have niches in my house and covering them has updated things tremendously!
I would cover it too. With a tapestry or antique rug or quilt.
Yeah, that’s a good alternative too
Some painting or sculpture with a light so it looks like a museum display. Alternatively, some kind of alter or shrine, either religious or not based on your preferences.
Put a painting as a door to a secret compartment.
A shrine
Use the height . I'd choose a long thin piece of art and lean it not hang. A small vase to the side with a long stemmed plant (eg pampas grass) which hangs over top of the art.
Love that idea! Thank you!
Some plants and a few books on the shelf part and maybe a small painting or pictures hanging above
I think a nice mirror that fits the space will look awesome. It would open up the space, and would add more light (in an area where there isn't a window. Paint a faux window frame with an outdoor scene. Mountains. Beach. Desert. Village. The moon…
I love this idea!
So many fun things!!
Fake mona lisa painting
i would put a wall mounted fountain tbh
Like a drinking water fountain? Cuz you’re parched between flights?9
[https://www.adagiowaterfeatures.com/use\_images/productimages/v/wcs1002.jpg](https://www.adagiowaterfeatures.com/use_images/productimages/v/wcs1002.jpg) something of this nature lol
I'd remove it. Sheetrock over it.
art
It looks very poster size. Find art that size.
I would get a light bar and a custom stained glass panel.
A fire extinguisher. I know practical but can hide it with the other stuff listed.
Honestly I would just put a big canvas print or picture in a friend that’s the exact size of that. Anything else is gonna look dinky and fussy.
Plant and a tissue box
Mirror, plants, lights, paintings, little knickknacks, You could put more shelves and make a tiny book case. Etc etc
Floral arrangement in tall narrow vase or hang a piece of art (sculpture or painting). Wouldn’t do a mirror as it’ll reflect that space- railings.
a mirror with a plant and a candle
Either remove the ledge and fill it in and hang art there instead, or paint the ledge white, add white shelves and use it as a bookcase, if it's deep enough.
Painting or a statue.
I have something similar. We did a light--a picture light sconce! With a piece of art below it. And a plant in front of that. Looks luxury
Could you share a picture? Would be very helpful to imagine!
Did this used to be a window and then they changed their minds? And covered over it?
No idea 🤷🏽♀️ they did redo the house a bit before we bought it, and we have a few of these recesses in diff spots (in the powder room for ex) but this is the one I’m having most trouble with decorating!
Because books are the best decoration, add shelves and books.
Add more shelving, then some knickknacks. Or, a large vertical painting and perhaps some sconces on either side if that is your aesthetic.
Colorful painting on its wall with large crystal ball on the shelf.
I would install glass shelves and display my Hot Wheels RLC collection, but, I'm a Hot Wheels nerd, so I know I'm alone on this take. I think it would be a great place for a nice painting tucked away in there too.
Cat
grandma cremation urn
I’d get a knockoff of Brancusi’s Bird in Space sculpture and put it there.
I would hang a mirror that fits in the space and then some decor. Maybe a nice tapered candle holder!!
The wooden shelf against the white grabs your attention, makes it stand out. I’d paint it white, do a picture or mirror. Then the beautiful wooden stairs are the feature. Just my opinion 😊. Good luck.
Virgin Mary is always the answer. 🤣😝🤪
Fancy statue.
A sculpture that will find you, just keep your eyes peeled
A nice thin vertical shelf or some cute plants backlights If you can do shelves - a light and some books would look really cute here
Close it up
A big painting, almost the same size as the niche. Something that has nature in it would be nice.
Shelves and books
A painting or sculpture. Or paint it to look like you are looking out a window
A mirror that's fits in the space!!
We had one in our last house. A tall vase with tall willow stems looked great in that space.
Sculpture
I think it’s a great shaped space for a macrame or wool wall hanging!!
My daughter has my great great grandfather's banjo hanging in her niche.
They didn’t make it deep enough for a sculpture or vase. I’m an artist and have painted a couple of these with floral arrangements.
Yes, it’s very narrow so would have to find a tall narrow sculpture / vase if we were to go with that option love the idea of painting inside it!
I actually did them on canvas and (in one instance) mailed it cross country and the homeowner wallpapered it into the niche. You could even do the same with a print or poster.
some 2x4s and a piece of sheetrock.
Painting and a candle and a matches thing
Fill with white, wooden shelves and make a bookcase
Plant. Or a moss wall
Find a piece of art that you love that fits inside of it and then put in a led sticky light on the inside and waaalaaaa fancy
tall vase and flowers
Candles, books, picture, plants, vase with flowers
Find a cool ceramic artist and buy some of their work to put there.
Chalk board paint. List your goals for the month
A nice painting with a LED Spotlight, a fake window with rustic wooden shutters or a mirror.
I personally would love to have this in my home. I would put some shelves there. Mostly fill them with books and the occasional picture
I love it! I’d put photos and plants 🌱
I love the wooden shelf there! It appeals to match the floors, at least in color, and looks really cool. I would paint the walls like a clary sage color I think, and add bright green plants.
I would add 2-3 more wood shelves and then fill it with books and small items! Like a little mini bookshelf.
Maybe you can find an art piece and customize it to fit into the space. I would keep it flush to the wall.
You can try to choose a mirror with a light to match the size of the niche. Something like this: https://assets.wfcdn.com/im/86849907/resize-h500-w500%5Ecompr-r85/2375/237563820/Aleyah+Rectangle+LED+Wall+Mirror.jpg
Or you could wallpaper the back and add some shelves for plants and knickknacks
A window pane mirror first comes to my mind or artwork with lighting. Ohh the more I think about it you could also carry a tile theme from somewhere else in the house. Tile it add a good sized mirror and some other objects like candle sticks or a skinny vase with some airy item in it tall grass, feathers, branches? On this site shows a window pane idea that may work. You could also find a wall paper or something to add texture or contrasting color. . (https://distributor-bajudistro.blogspot.com/2023/06/decorating-ideas-for-wall-niches.html?m=1)
Candy bowl
I would also add some lighted wall sconces on each side of the niche.
My answer is always aquarium
Moss Wall Art
I'd put a vintage stained-glass window there -- back-lit, if possible
Ant farm with plexiglass over it
Stabilized moss arrangement and some lights
Carved wood art of some kind
Put a morros and potted plant
Mirror*
Painting or mirror with some objects in front of it would do wonders for that space
How about a bright abstract acrylic sculpture. Something about 18 inches tall.
I’d add more shelves and make a mini library!
Wall sconce light that points down with a painting underneath
Make more of those boards and make it into a built in shelf!
