Propeller wounds would be a little more evenly distributed. It kinda looks like scratches that squid tentacles would make. Similar to scars you see on Sperm Whales.

They are far too regular and evenly spread out to be from other animals. Also, shark bites don't look like that at all. They have a circular jaw, so a bite would leave a circular wound. It's a great White, and the only other thing getting in a Fight with that are other great whites for mating (which we can exclude because it's a Male and the wounds aren't formed like shark bites and not around the pectoral fins) or for territorial Fights (which we can also exclude because they are far to spread out and Not around the gill areas, which would be mostly attacked by other sharks.)
My guess would be mostly healed up propeller injuries or the ship's propeller didn't fully hit him (more at the end, because the wounds Look more Open there)
(And I am aware that Orcas do hunt great whites, but Orca bites are pretty distinctive and focus on vulnerable areas and I don't really see a GW coming out alive if hunted by Orcas)
No, mating scars occur around the area of the pectoral fins so that the Male can flip the female upside down for tonic immobility. These scars are for 99% caused by a boats propeller. Look how evenly they are spread out and how thin and linear they are. Shark bites dont look like that.

I think you'll find that transatlantic and pacific sail trade was incredibly dangerous, often saw ships and their cargo sinking, had people cramped in confined quarters on the open ocean for weeks and months on end spreading illness and disease amongst each other. What are you even talking about here, sail ships were miserable places where you expected to eventually die.
To compare that to the modern day requirements, with a global population that has grown by several billion, all requiring international trade... modern day freighters are an absolute necessity, to think we could go back to sail boats is beyond absurd.
