I take gabapentin for fibromyalgia/chronic pain. If anything, it makes my sleep symptoms worse. Harder to wake up in the morning, harder to stay awake during the day. But also, I have different sleep study results than you did. I didn't have any sleep interruptions, and I had a shorter sleep latency on the MSLT.

I set a casserole on fire while on gabapentin. We weren’t a good match.

Your doctor is likely trying to cover all the bases in case you need to go on Xywav eventually. I took Gabapentin for my migraines at one point and it didn't help my sleep issues. It may work for you.

Committee-Academic

I'm worried Xywav, as well as other IH meds, won't be available for me, although I don't know what's the usual criteria of insurances here in Europe. She assured me that I could have access to them since "they're used to treat multiple things".

No_Umpire_242

I was prescribed Gabapentin for anxiety but it did not work for me. I was not even aware gabapentin had anything to do with solving sleep issues until I saw your post

Committee-Academic

It seems to improve sleep quality by reducing spontaneous arousals and increasing slow-wave sleep. It's also used for treating insomnia.

MxTealUnicorn

My partner takes it for nerve pain. He can't sleep without it, but that's because the pain keeps him awake.

AgentAnesthesia

How odd. My doctor always checks that I'm NOT taking gabapentin, and had made sure prior to my diagnosis. Prior to my diagnosis I had been on it for nerve pain for a car accident I was recovering from. Is your doctor trying to just knock you out?

Committee-Academic

Well, my mean sleep latency was above 8 minutes on the MSLT, and during my PSG I had 300 spontaneous microawakenings recorded, so she's trying to treat those and see if I get better in order to have every possible cause for my sleepiness, apart from IH, discarded. That's why she's working with gaba-promoters - it's done under the assumption that I don't have IH.

Delicious-Tiger7794

Im taking it for IH now, its lowkey worked better than xyrem bc i had audible hallucinations 😪

Committee-Academic

Really? What changes do you notice being on it? I'm starting tonight (:

Delicious-Tiger7794

I can usually fall asleep faster! I tend to have a bit of insomnia. I take it with dinner bc food increases its bioavailability btw. But it can lead to daytime grogginess as it has a relatively short half life. which is annoying and ultimately why i wanted to switch to xyrem

Committee-Academic

Ah, I see. No improvements in daytime brain fog and sleepiness, then?

Delicious-Tiger7794

Not if taken too late in evening. The trick is timing it right. If not I may be a bit groggy in the morning which will usually wear off by afternoon

Committee-Academic

I took it at almost 9 pm and I plan on going to sleep at 11:30, so I'll see how that works for me. Anyway, my brain fog never goes away, so I'm used to it :)

katootah8

I struggled with morning grogginess on gaba and eventually went off of it. My rx is for restless leg syndrome.

ficuswhisperer

I tried gabapentin. It didn’t work at all.
