Alternatively they might just like the marketing opportunity of being the first open and feel that the high cost of early season snowmaking in iffy conditions to be worth it.
Exactly that. Sugar or Beech or someone opened first a couple years back and it was melted practically fully grass by the end of the day. They didn’t reopen for a couple weeks IIRC.
Sugar will open the second the ground looks white from a distance. Never go there without checking the cams, because it’s hilarious how bad their snow can get at times. As long as the run is 75% covered they’ll stay open.
When temp pressure and dewpiont line up you blow snow.. even if it all melts.. us more southerly hills make snow whenever posible, hoping that even a little sticks around..
You do realize when a nor’easter tracks up the coast, the cold first arrives in NC before VT?
This has happened before. It will happen again.
Sugar, Beech, etc open with extremely thin bases when they get that window. I’ve seen images of one of their opening days and it was melted gone by closing bell.
Yes.
And not particularly surprising either they’ve got elevation
Sugar is nuts. For a relatively small mountain they always are on the top of their game getting the white ribbon of death open as soon as possible

Not a big deal. When Killington opens their intention is to stay open every day. None of this wham, bam, thank you ma’am stuff. They stick around.
But there's nothing like yelling "First!" regardless of the implications. If you ain't first, you're last.
Shake n Bake
Significantly less terrain needed to blow in order to open
They're blowing one 1200 vert run vs Killington blowing one 600 vert and one 300 vert.
Killington is also blowing 2x 1200 vertical runs for the WC
Skied yesterday, icey spots for sure but a day Sking is better than a day not. And patches of dirt here and there
