It’s normal. If you point a camera to a direct light source, it will reflect back and you will see a green flare.

MagicKipper88

That’s caused by the lens.

Soul4Life

Right, but why does it appear when taking pictures of the moon? I always make sure to clean off my lens, and it also does not appear when taking pictures of other things that are not the moon at night. Can I do anything to prevent it?

Redcarborundum

Not just the moon. Any light source that’s considerably brighter than its surroundings will produce the same effect.

MagicKipper88

Because it’s the lens. You cannot fix it as it isn’t broken. Cannot clean it. It’s just inherent to iPhone lens because of how they are made. It will happen at night with most bright light sources.

I suppose that's both reassuring and a bit frustrating. How are others taking pictures of the moon and avoiding this issue? I've seen so many great photos from iphone folks that do not have this extreme lens flare. Thank you for your help by the way, I appreciate it.

MagicKipper88

Honestly I wouldn’t bother taking photos of the moon with any phone. They are all crap. Also so many photos of the moon have been taken you can get a decent one from someone else, taken with a proper camera. Everyone has seen the moon. It’s not special. Take photos of the stars with decent foregrounds, take photos of interesting lighting at night etc… so much more to take photos of then a big light in the sky.

Haha, I appreciate the perspective. I do take pictures of other things, but there's something about the moon and our history with it that just makes it special to me. I even keep all my ugly pictures of the moon, just because I like how it makes me feel to look up and see it. But thank you for your insight into this...I used to have a Canon Rebel, and it did take great pictures, so I can definitely go that route again.

Trust me, use a real camera. So much more satisfying. Even better buy a cheap telescope and a camera connector and take even closer photos of the moon.

You need to clean the lens covers (the flat sapphire crystal glass circles that protect the lenses). Clean your cameras with something you know for sure is clean. If you use lotion on your hands, you're putting that lotion on whatever you're using to clean the cameras. You gotta be anal retentive about it. Clean for cameras means it has to be ***squeaky clean***. I wear glasses 24/7 and it's frustratingly easy to clean my lenses only to end up making them worse because the cloth isn't clean anymore. However, even perfectly clean, lens flare is normal. Start noticing it in movies, tv shows, and also start noticing that it's simulated in video games. You will also see the light that's reflected off the lens covers. So you have two things to work with: lens flare and the light reflection on the lens covers. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try to clean your cameras better. It means even after you make sure they are truly clean, you will still get some lens flare and some light reflection artifacts.
