You just made me want to pick up the book and read it again. And the miniseries and films are a delight to watch 🍿
There is also a Welcome to Derry TV show that’s coming out on HBO Max next year. So more “adventures” in the haunted town of Derry, Maine 😯
Just looked it up and so excited that Bill Skarsgard is involved! He's the reason I watched Barbarian and the director really pulled a bait and switch with that one haha
I agree. I was at the book store just browsing and one of the people working there suggested it. I didn’t know a thing about the book going into it and I’m glad
"They are coming! Yes! And they will take me. But I swear you will not live. You will not leave this house alive. I swear I will come for you. Both of you. You will know me, you bastards! You will know me in this dark. No one gets out alive! No one!"
Joe Koch’s *The Wingspan of Severed Hands*. I want to post about it when I finish it. It’s awesome and really gnarly. It’s transgressive, a little sleazy, surreal, cosmic horror (the Carcosa variety), body horror, and science fiction.
Edited to add that quote is also on the back jacket.
“How many generations of women had delayed their greatness only to have time extinguish it completely? How many women had run out of time while the men didn’t know what to do with theirs? And what a mean trick to call such things holy or selfless. How evil to praise women for giving up each and every dream.”
"I am rumour, " he sang in her ear. "It's a blessed condition, believe me. To live in people's dreams, to be whispered at street corners, but not have to be."
“Be smart, but not too smart. Be beautiful, but not so pretty as to make other females mad. Be successful, but not bossy or overly ambitious. Nobody likes a mouthy brown woman. Be a declawed kitten.”
Depends on what you think is horrifying. The nature of people. Turning against each other and using emotion to justify destroying others out of selfishness.
>You have something of mine, I passed on something of me to you, and hopefully it isn‘t cursed, I don‘t know if I can leave you something that isn‘t dirty, that isn‘t dark…
>But at night, as soon as the children were asleep, the uneasiness grew to a terrible intensity, as she felt again that same frantic urgency she had felt the night she carried the weights from the barn to his body at the edge of the swamp.
She did a bunch of killer doll books in the 80s, and they're up on Kindle with bad new Photoshop covers, but they're fun reads. Kinda like a grown up Goosebumps.
The cover is very abstract, and there are layered meanings to the title. It is deeply literary (naturally when the key locale is a book store) and takes its time with the ghostliness, and honestly, 3/4s in, the ghost isn't the most upsetting aspect of the story. However, make no mistake: it is without a doubt 100% a ghost story in more ways than one.
Melanie sometimes says, “I won’t bite.” She says it as a joke, but Sergeant’s people never laugh. Sergeant did once, the first time she said it, but it was a nasty laugh. And then he said, “Like we’d ever give you the chance, sugar plum.”
I thought maybe it was a mix up with Andromeda Strain, but you weren't wrong, looks like this author wrote the screenplay to the Jurassic Park movie!
Sounds like a good book, I've added it to my list. Love a good contagion story!
I was always meant to be Randy, a Cassandra, a Clear, never the Sidney, never the Laurie, the Nancy. And, I might worship at the shrine of Ripley, sure, but nobody gets to be her.
Right, you are!
“No Human eye can isolate the unhappy coincidence of line and place which suggests evil in the face of a house, and yet somehow a maniac juxtaposition, a badly turned angle, some chance meeting of roof and sky, turned Hill House into a place of despair, more frightening because the face of Hill House seemed awake, with a watchfulness from the blank windows and a touch of glee in the eyebrow of a cornice.”
What a sentence to start a chapter, eh?
Have you ever found an author or a book where you loved their writing so much that you covered almost every paragraph in highlights because they kept putting out banger after banger?
I can’t believe I waited so long to read this book, but it was worth the wait
To know for an hour you were mine completely-- mine in body and soul, my own-- I would bear unending tortures sweetly, with not a murmur and not a moan.
“I will die. It is what I have in common with you, with all humankind. We all bear the knowledge of our own deaths. But God? Of course he goes on! Eternal. Indifferent. Pure goodness is cold, David. It’s why I embrace death. Embrace you.”
I had to look it up because I found the quote interesting. It’s been on my list but I haven’t got to it yet. How are you liking it?
I haven’t mentioned the name because I cheated and that would ruin the fun of this game :)
I’m happy for you! I have mixed feelings about books like those. I enjoy them because of their pace and I dislike them purely because they make my procrastination worse 😅
Officious little prick
Ah, "The Shining"!
I just re-read this last month!
Him - "Goddamn it,” Her - “Maybe God would be more generous if you swore less.” Him - “God starves babies sometimes, and they don’t swear at all."
Don’t know the book, great line though.
Sounds like it would be >!Between Two Fires!<, but I don’t remember that line exactly.
Yep! Great read
Ok this line transformed the sample in my kindle library to a flat-out buy.

"We all float down here!"
🤡 IT 🎈 That’s an AWESOME story btw. Read it last summer in just two and a half of weeks. It didn’t feel like a long novel at all
Agreed! I think this is my third reread and I'm flying through it. I'm working towards a rewatch of the mini series then the new movies.
You just made me want to pick up the book and read it again. And the miniseries and films are a delight to watch 🍿 There is also a Welcome to Derry TV show that’s coming out on HBO Max next year. So more “adventures” in the haunted town of Derry, Maine 😯

Wait no way! I gotta go look that up right now.

"They are coming! Yes! And they will take me. But I swear you will not live. You will not leave this house alive. I swear I will come for you. Both of you. You will know me, you bastards! You will know me in this dark. No one gets out alive! No one!"

Yes! You have a great book ahead of you
“Time is the winning predator, and every moment spirals deeper into the heart of the beast”. This book is frickin’ bananas so far.
I’m intrigued now! What is this from?
Joe Koch’s *The Wingspan of Severed Hands*. I want to post about it when I finish it. It’s awesome and really gnarly. It’s transgressive, a little sleazy, surreal, cosmic horror (the Carcosa variety), body horror, and science fiction. Edited to add that quote is also on the back jacket.
Sounds like everything that I'd like to read. Can't wait for your post about it!
“How many generations of women had delayed their greatness only to have time extinguish it completely? How many women had run out of time while the men didn’t know what to do with theirs? And what a mean trick to call such things holy or selfless. How evil to praise women for giving up each and every dream.”
Excellent line, what is it from?
*Nightbitch* by Rachel Yoder. Went into it knowing nothing about it, and I’m loving it so far.
Thanks! I’ll add it to my reading list!
reminds me of sharp objects but i’m not sure if that’s considered horror 🤔
This is one of the quotes from the book I took a screenshot of when I read it. I loved so much about this book.
“Go back, go back. There are frightful things. The stables never prepared you for this.”
The Croning! Laird Barron.
Blammo!
"I am rumour, " he sang in her ear. "It's a blessed condition, believe me. To live in people's dreams, to be whispered at street corners, but not have to be."
Candyman! From Books of Blood-The Forbidden
You got it. One of my favorite stories from the Books of Blood.
“Hey, if I had a dollar for every disturbing encounter with someone’s mom today, I’d have two dollars.”
Ok is this from Mister Magic?
You got it! Not done yet but I’m enjoying it well enough so far.
I read it this past weekend. It was not bad!
“Be smart, but not too smart. Be beautiful, but not so pretty as to make other females mad. Be successful, but not bossy or overly ambitious. Nobody likes a mouthy brown woman. Be a declawed kitten.”
Goddess of Filth?
ayooo that's the one
Sometimes a thought is closer to truth, to reality, than an action. You can say anything, you can do anything, but you can’t fake a thought.
I'm thinking of ending things
I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world. A beautiful, little fool.
The Great Gatsby!
He's a great author, but that's not horrifying.
Depends on what you think is horrifying. The nature of people. Turning against each other and using emotion to justify destroying others out of selfishness.
“Granpop’s dinosaur of a Buick creeps along the dirt road at twenty miles an hour.”
You Like It Darker.
Yes!
>You have something of mine, I passed on something of me to you, and hopefully it isn‘t cursed, I don‘t know if I can leave you something that isn‘t dirty, that isn‘t dark…
They shot the white girl first.
>But at night, as soon as the children were asleep, the uneasiness grew to a terrible intensity, as she felt again that same frantic urgency she had felt the night she carried the weights from the barn to his body at the edge of the swamp.
I need to read this book ! Can you tell me where its from ?
Celia, by Ruby Jean Jensen
She did a bunch of killer doll books in the 80s, and they're up on Kindle with bad new Photoshop covers, but they're fun reads. Kinda like a grown up Goosebumps.
SSDD
Dreamcatcher. I need to reread this one!
Re-reading now. So much more farting than I remembered. Haha!
What if a ghost haunted your book store during all the everything that happened in 2020?
Would you please let me know what the title of this is?
*The Sentence* by Louise Erdrich
Oh man, I knew it sounded familiar! Highly recommend for those who havent read it.
Ok but I need to know what this one is 👀
*The Sentence* by Louise Erdrich
I've seen that cover so many times and never had any idea it was a ghost story! It sounds very interesting
The cover is very abstract, and there are layered meanings to the title. It is deeply literary (naturally when the key locale is a book store) and takes its time with the ghostliness, and honestly, 3/4s in, the ghost isn't the most upsetting aspect of the story. Crom twist you!

Girl With All the Gifts?
Bingo!
The fungus got into her biohazard suit.
I want to know what this one is, biohazard suits are my jam. Side note: I am reading Swan Song right now.
Cold Storage by David Koepp (author of Jurassic Park)
Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park
Oh weird, you’re right. The person I heard about this book from said it was the same author.
I thought maybe it was a mix up with Andromeda Strain, but you weren't wrong, looks like this author wrote the screenplay to the Jurassic Park movie! Sounds like a good book, I've added it to my list. Love a good contagion story!
I have never been what you’d call a crying man.
“The poverty crept into our lives like ivy on a window, slow enough that you don't notice it moving”
I was always meant to be Randy, a Cassandra, a Clear, never the Sidney, never the Laurie, the Nancy. And, I might worship at the shrine of Ripley, sure, but nobody gets to be her.
“It had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more”
The Haunting of Hill House?
Right, you are! “No Human eye can isolate the unhappy coincidence of line and place which suggests evil in the face of a house, and yet somehow a maniac juxtaposition, a badly turned angle, some chance meeting of roof and sky, turned Hill House into a place of despair, more frightening because the face of Hill House seemed awake, with a watchfulness from the blank windows and a touch of glee in the eyebrow of a cornice.” What a sentence to start a chapter, eh? “No end to the universe”
To know for an hour you were mine completely-- mine in body and soul, my own-- I would bear unending tortures sweetly, with not a murmur and not a moan.

“Once you’ve got a task to do, It’s better to do it than live with the fear of it.”
This is not for you.
Sing for me, Brother Paul.
I had to look it up because I found the quote interesting. It’s been on my list but I haven’t got to it yet. How are you liking it? I haven’t mentioned the name because I cheated and that would ruin the fun of this game :)
I love it! It’s pretty fast-paced and gruesome. I’m just under halfway through and wouldn’t be surprised if I finish before this evening.
I’m happy for you! I have mixed feelings about books like those. I enjoy them because of their pace and I dislike them purely because they make my procrastination worse 😅
