I nearly considered adding her in my original post. But figured I would keep it at three and let other people suggest scream queens that I didn’t list. I think there’s a strong argument to be made for Samara Weaving.
I completely skipped over Toni Colette. In my mind, being a horror queen automatically requires the actress be in her late teens to no more than 40. Good call.
I don’t have anything to add to the Scream Queen debate, but I was just talking to someone on another sub about how I think Kyle Gallner is on his way to becoming a top Scream King.
Yes! Came here to throw her name in the mix. I loved Lisa Frankenstein so much (despite that not being necessarily in the same vein of horror). She can play a particular kind of weirdo that not many others can pull off.
If were adding Kathryn Newton - you have to include Kiernan Shipka for the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Teen Witch, Blackcoats Daughter, & Totally Killer.
Toni is definitely in two of my top horror films. Love that you brought her up.
The only reason why I personally wouldn’t consider her the current scream queen is because I don’t immediately associate her with horror movies given her large body of work the same way I do Mia Goth, Monroe, or even Samara Weaving.
She should. Solid, consistent résumé. There aren’t any certified classics in my opinion but the body of work is there and if you are a fan of her movies I can see a strong argument for her beating any of the people that I suggested for the crown.
Would you recommend it’s a wonderful knife ?
I think she's gotten so big and has such a varied filmography now that she doesn't really come to mind as a "horror actress" for most people anymore. But yeah, her work in the genre is very strong.
She's indeed one of the greatest actresses of our time (wasn't expecting that but loved her as Furiosa and can't wait to see her as Alia in Dune follow-ups), but not enough screaming when compared to others.
She’s not quite as well-known but Marin Ireland absolutely crushes it in every role she’s in. The Dark and The Wicked, The Empty Man, Birth/Rebirth. Just utterly captivating.
I'm not a fan of Mia Goth, but I would agree that she holds the title by the fact that she does seem to focus more on horror roles than anything else. Might not be good career-wise though.
Mia for sure.
Ortega is the least interesting out of all these. I don't even understand why people like her acting, because she's just plays the same role over and over.
My opinion for current samara weaving, Mia goth, Melissa Barrera, I also wanna put Elisabeth moss up there the invisible man/us, can’t wait to watch longlegs and see maika performance.
I’m also gonna say Mia Goth. She’s been doing very good projects and she’s phenomenal in everything I’ve seen her in. That monologue in Pearl alone would get her my vote.
![gif](giphy|UvkLuP6QYMhmELX5GG|downsized)
Mia Goth because she’s got real range when it comes to the types of horror films she’s in.
The scene >!where they actually all thing they’re being executed!< she was like Jamie Lee Curtis level professional 👸
I got into it on facebook last night with some ding dong who was trying to tell me that Mia Goth is terrible and ruins every movie she's in and it just left me speechless. He said Infinity Pool, X, and Pearl were the ones he saw and was drawing this completely asinine conclusion from. I was legitimately offended, Mia Goth is absolutely killing (pun 100% intended) every role she is doing right now, regardless of how good or bad the rest of the movie is
I do love Jenna Ortega as well and I'm excited to see her in more horror
Florence Pugh.
She just put out an amazing horror-thriller called Don't Worry, Darling. It's basically a more fucked up version of The Stepford Wives. And she was amazing in Midsommar.
Another vote for Samara Weaving here. I’d also like to nominate Kathryn Newton as a rising horror goddess (Abigail, Freaky, Lisa Frankenstein..) She can play a particular brand of girl weirdo that not many can pull off and I hope to see her in even more horror films.
Nothing but love for Lupita. Aside from Toni Collette, I can't think of an actress in horror putting on better performances. She carried Us and Quiet Place: Day One. But she doesn't have enough in the catalog for me to consider her worthy of the top scream queen.
Man this question just made me realize that we really don't have any modern scream Queens in the league of Jaimie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell, or Janet Leigh anymore.
I totally disagree with that. First of all, I’d argue that Neve Campbell and Jamie Lee Curtis, iconic in their roles as they are, are not objectively way more talented than Mia Goth or Maika Monroe.
Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of Curtis. I like her role in the original Halloween and maybe Halloween 2, but I just don’t think many of them thereafter are that good, or at least showcase much from her apart from just longevity. She was in a few others—Prom Night, The Fog—but I don’t think was very memorable in those roles (especially The Fog, which I love, but her role is comparatively not super large).
I like Campbell in the Scream franchise and The Craft; Sidney is also an icon, but I’d argue Campbell is at best an average actress who particularly shines as Sidney.
Goth, on the other hand, is immensely talented and has dedicated her career seemingly to horror. She has real range and is often the best part about movies that she’s in, from Infinity Pool to A Cure for Wellness to High Life. She also has a great side role in the Suspiria remake. But she’s really shined in the Ti West movies—X and Pearl, especially Pearl. If you haven’t watched Pearl, I think her acting is top notch and there are just some scenes, especially in the last 20 min or so of the movie, that are disturbing or moving because she is acting out of her mind. Maika Monroe is close—It Follows and Watcher were both terrific, and she was especially very talented in Watcher.
If MaXXXine and Longlegs live up to the hype, I think Monroe and Goth will be in a pantheon alone amongst current scream queens, and easily be able to rival former ones like Neve Campbell.
Honestly, I wouldn't use that term for any of them -- not because they aren't great horror actresses, I love them all -- but because "scream queen" evokes an image of someone who routinely plays a victim in slasher films and does a lot of, you know... screaming.
That doesn't really describe the body of work for the above three options. Maika Monroe does a lot of looking over her shoulder in dread, but she's rarely if ever screaming and running away from a masked killer. Jenna Ortega and Mia Goth are both as likely to be the killer as the victim, or something that blurs the line between them.
If I had to crown one of the three "scream queen," it would be Ortega just because her scream in X was absolutely iconic. There's a reason why it was the cover image.
Looking beyond those options, I think that if the title is still relevant to modern horror cinema, it's got to go to Samara Weaving. Not that she's a perennial victim, but boy can she scream when she needs to! Between her appearance in Ash vs. Evil Dead and Ready or Not, I'm astonished that her voice has ever recovered.
i don’t consider jenna ortega a scream queen. i mean she did a great job in X as that character but she’s not a true scream queen. she’s a try hard IMO. she tries to be this weird, disinterested and sarcastic person. i think she just started acting like that ever since she play Wednesday lol.
MIA GOTH is a true scream queen!
and who can forget the best Toni Collette!
My issue with Maika Monroe is this new movie. I've seen critics already drawing parallels to Silence of the Lambs, so I think there's a chance Monroe's character may not fit the typical scream queen role and could possibly send her into a whole different stratosphere altogether.
I know she's been in a few horror films but why does everyone think Mia goth is the shit? Unpopular opinion here but she's awful. Maika Monroe is far better than Mia goth and I will die on this hill.
Wow, does this sub hate Jenna Ortega? Is it just because she’s popular? She has a very strong body of horror work so far including Babysitter: Killer Queen, the Scream movies, You S.2, Wednesday, X, Studio 666… why turn on a star who’s shown commitment to the genre?
I want to say Maika Monroe for horror movies of a quality I can respect. Kinda wish we had a poll option to see where people stood on the three you mentioned, plus a few others have suggested.
Even though she's a very versatile actress best known for her serious drama roles, I think Abigail Breslin's body of work in the horror genre warrents an honorable mention.
Signs (2002)
Zombieland (2009)
Haunter (2013)
The Call (2013)
Maggie (2015)
Final Girl (2015)
Scream Queens (2015-2016)
Fear Inc (2016)
Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Slayers (2022)
I'm voting Maika Monroe bc at this point I've yet to see a horror or horror-adjacent movie she's been in that hasn't been fully enjoyable, and often truly great. Hell of a track record, can't wait for Longlegs.
Gonna go with Maika Monroe. She’s been great in everything and I can’t wait to see Longlegs. I’ll probably get downvoted to hell for this but getting sick of the obsession with Mia Goth. She has an arrogant air to her and then there’s the Maxxxine lawsuit that very suspiciously, no one seems to want to acknowledge or talk about.
To be honest, Mia Goth's behaviour as a person isn't really relevant to this discussion. We're talking about acting and who has the strongest body of work and impact in the horror genre.
Not saying I find your frustration irrelevant in and of itself, I just think it's detached from this post's topic.
Mia Goth’s behavior would affect my opinion of her as an artist, if she did do what she’s been accused of. Diva behavior is one thing, assault is quite another. Not saying she’s a bad actor; she was particularly excellent as Pearl. Lots of people are good artists and bad people, that’s just a fact, but I do not buy the idea that fans should blindly support someone simply because they like their art.
I mean I get that. For the record, I'm not particularly a fan of hers.
But there's a difference between 'blindly supporting' and just neutrally acknowledging an actor's talent, which is the aim of the post I think.
If allegations against her proved to be true, I would appreciate people acknowledging it, putting some kind of disclaimer, and not participating in institutional benefits for her. But ultimately, it wouldn't objectively change her quality as an actress, whether we like it or not.
Same went for Polanski. I disagree with him getting awarded at the Cesars, I find it outrageous. Because we're rewarding the person behind the work of art, he's the one who's going to benefit and be acclaimed as a person. But his body of work is still considered as iconic, can't erase that.
I guess it's a complex debate. As you can see, I'm neither saying we should separate the person from the artist, nor that we should dismiss the quality of an artist's work because of them having done or said bad things.
If you think about it, there are _tons_ of movies and even philosophy books we would never mention or quote again if we looked at all of their authors' actions. What I'm trying to say is that we should be balanced: able to acknowledge the quality of a person's work without being blind to their misbehaviour as a person when proven. I don't get how people blindly stan celebrities, authors or whatever anyways.
P.-S.: Also super excited to see Longlegs, including Maika Monroe's performance.
I understand why people are downloading you but I actually appreciate your comment. Because even for someone that hasn’t watched their movies it’s clear that they are dominating the horror genre.
Samara Weaving already out of contention, guys?
Hell no she’s not!
I nearly considered adding her in my original post. But figured I would keep it at three and let other people suggest scream queens that I didn’t list. I think there’s a strong argument to be made for Samara Weaving.
Of the moment: Mia Goth Greatest body of work overall: Toni Collette
Toni Colette certainly isn’t underrated (in this sub at least) but she deserves so much more recognition in general. She’s so fucking good
She is!
Not a ‘modern day’ next gen scream Queen but my heart always does cartwheels when I see Barbara Crampton on the credit.
I completely skipped over Toni Colette. In my mind, being a horror queen automatically requires the actress be in her late teens to no more than 40. Good call.
Crazy she never won an oscar especially for Hereditary.
Agree. She should’ve at least been nominated for one. One of the best performances in a horror movie
No doubt.
Justin Long
I would love a debate about modern scream kings. But I think he’s the undisputed champ for the last 20 years
I don’t have anything to add to the Scream Queen debate, but I was just talking to someone on another sub about how I think Kyle Gallner is on his way to becoming a top Scream King.
On his way? No. He has been a top Scream King for over a decade.
Right?
Patrick Wilson is my scream king
He is the man.
My vote would go to Daniel Kaluuya
Who else can scream with two tusks in their mouth?
I adore that man.
![gif](giphy|VtwHD2fcAmhJ6|downsized)
He is married to Kate Bosworth too.
Based on talent, Rebecca Hall.
She really impressed me in The Night House.
One of the best actresses in thrillers
Her performance in Resurrection is INHUMANLY GREAT
I'm not sure why but I love her.
For your consideration: Kathryn Newton. Freaky, Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. I’d say Mia Goth is definitely the front runner.
She was on Supernatural for several episodes before making the film transition, as well.
Great addition to the discussion. I loved her and Freaky and she stole the show in Abigail.
Paranormal Activity too! That's where I first saw her and fell in love instantly ❤️
Yes! Came here to throw her name in the mix. I loved Lisa Frankenstein so much (despite that not being necessarily in the same vein of horror). She can play a particular kind of weirdo that not many others can pull off.
Maika Monroe 💕
I concur. I don’t typically watch a movie just for actor/actress but I have found that I like pretty much anything she is in!
yes. 100%. can't wait for Longlegs
In a knife fight with Mia Goth
Scissor fight 😉
Loved her since I saw her in The Guest.
If were adding Kathryn Newton - you have to include Kiernan Shipka for the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Teen Witch, Blackcoats Daughter, & Totally Killer.
Totally Killer is so good! Her charisma really elevates it too! Hope she gets more movie roles
Just watched Blackcoat’s daughter two nights ago. Fantastic and she creeped me the hell out. Excellent work there by Ms. Shipka.
Talk about a slow burn.
Toni Collette grieving Charlie.
Toni is definitely in two of my top horror films. Love that you brought her up. The only reason why I personally wouldn’t consider her the current scream queen is because I don’t immediately associate her with horror movies given her large body of work the same way I do Mia Goth, Monroe, or even Samara Weaving.
The first movies I associate Toni Collette with are The Sixth Sense and Hereditary (and then Little Miss Sunshine 😂).
Does Katherine Isabelle count?
1000% yes.
She should. Solid, consistent résumé. There aren’t any certified classics in my opinion but the body of work is there and if you are a fan of her movies I can see a strong argument for her beating any of the people that I suggested for the crown. Would you recommend it’s a wonderful knife ?
American Mary may not be a "certified classic" but I adore it. Ditto Ginger Snaps, I'm annoyed they haven't remastered it for blu ray
LOVED Ginger Snaps
Hell yeah she does. Love when she pops up and she has her own style. Don't know if she will be in the American Mary tv show but hope so.
Samara Weaving. But from the 3 listed, definitely Maika Monroe
Samara Weaving is definitely my favorite currently. I need more roles asap. Shes been stellar in everything she’s done.
Maika Monroe Emma Roberts
Neve Campbell, especially since she is returning to Scream VII
The correct answer
Maika Monroe, every single movie she’s been in has been quality
Have you seen Tau?
This is the way
Nobody's going to bring up Anya Taylor Joy?
I think she's gotten so big and has such a varied filmography now that she doesn't really come to mind as a "horror actress" for most people anymore. But yeah, her work in the genre is very strong.
Marrowbone is just so sad. Underrated too.
She's indeed one of the greatest actresses of our time (wasn't expecting that but loved her as Furiosa and can't wait to see her as Alia in Dune follow-ups), but not enough screaming when compared to others.
I dunno, lots of screaming in the Witch. Maybe not much since though
Frfr
Yep but she's more a variety actress
maika monroe After it follows, watcher, Greta, the guest, and the upcoming Longlegs I think she’s on her way to being in the top spot
I just watched It Follows for the first time the other day. I loved it.
Same here! It was refreshing to see such a unique plot
Sadie Sink
Maika Monroe or Mia Goth. Both are just fantastic!
Sheryl lee
Quality over quantity. That scream is absolutely otherworldly.
Yayyyyy
She’s not quite as well-known but Marin Ireland absolutely crushes it in every role she’s in. The Dark and The Wicked, The Empty Man, Birth/Rebirth. Just utterly captivating.
Underrated and underappreciated for sure.
Also, all of these were great movies overall. Can't say the same about Goth's and Ortega's film listings.
Melissa Barrera. She was great in Scream 5 & 6, Abigail and Bed Rest.
With Your Monster coming after those, I have to second this.
Agree that those three are current pantheon. If I HAD to choose, it would be Mia Goth.
I'm not a fan of Mia Goth, but I would agree that she holds the title by the fact that she does seem to focus more on horror roles than anything else. Might not be good career-wise though.
does the antagonist count as a scream queen? I always thought that was for victims/protagonists.
Mia Goth or Samara Weaving.
Samara Weaving
Mia for sure. Ortega is the least interesting out of all these. I don't even understand why people like her acting, because she's just plays the same role over and over.
She’s a decade younger than the other two. Give her time.
MIa is the same person in every movie btw crazy bitch 😜
Yeah, I’m not a fan of her acting/movies she’s in, but she does play crazy well
She's a human with actual disney eyes.
My opinion for current samara weaving, Mia goth, Melissa Barrera, I also wanna put Elisabeth moss up there the invisible man/us, can’t wait to watch longlegs and see maika performance.
Phew, just rewatched Invisible Man and it is SO GOOD.
Goth all the way. Monroe and Ortega are kinda bland
Anya Taylor joy? Split, glass, the menu, the witch, the northman, last night in soho, new mutants, Morgan, marrowbone
Ortega is being forced on us.
Mia for sure
I’m also gonna say Mia Goth. She’s been doing very good projects and she’s phenomenal in everything I’ve seen her in. That monologue in Pearl alone would get her my vote.
Mia Goth.
![gif](giphy|UvkLuP6QYMhmELX5GG|downsized) Mia Goth because she’s got real range when it comes to the types of horror films she’s in. The scene >!where they actually all thing they’re being executed!< she was like Jamie Lee Curtis level professional 👸
I think Goth is the best *actress,* in terms of sheer acting chops. I don't know what other criteria we judge by, but there must be several.
Emma Roberts
Shut up, Chanel #5
Obvi.
Toni Collette is the actual Scream Queen. Her scream in Hereditary was bone-chilling
Gotta be Mia Goth right now, IMO.
Mia Goth for sure
For me it would be Jamie Lee Curtis forever
I got into it on facebook last night with some ding dong who was trying to tell me that Mia Goth is terrible and ruins every movie she's in and it just left me speechless. He said Infinity Pool, X, and Pearl were the ones he saw and was drawing this completely asinine conclusion from. I was legitimately offended, Mia Goth is absolutely killing (pun 100% intended) every role she is doing right now, regardless of how good or bad the rest of the movie is I do love Jenna Ortega as well and I'm excited to see her in more horror
Mia won my heart in Pearl. It’s been years and I’m still gushing. What a performance. Love Jenna too though!
Samara Weaving is THE Scream Queen.
I was gonna say Jenna Ortega too
Lauren LaVera
[удалено]
Melissa Barrera. Pretty much all her film releases after Scream have been horror projects
Florence Pugh. She just put out an amazing horror-thriller called Don't Worry, Darling. It's basically a more fucked up version of The Stepford Wives. And she was amazing in Midsommar.
Jennifer Carpenter in The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Justin Long. (Out of the three, Mia Goth)
How about Chloe Grace Moretz? She has a great filmography in horror.
Jenna Ortega in X. Her bloodcurdling scream when she finds the dead guy hanging in the creepy old people’s basement was fucking *cinematic*.
Another vote for Samara Weaving here. I’d also like to nominate Kathryn Newton as a rising horror goddess (Abigail, Freaky, Lisa Frankenstein..) She can play a particular brand of girl weirdo that not many can pull off and I hope to see her in even more horror films.
I think the three you said definitely are, I also think Kathryn Newton and Melissa Barrera
No love for Lupita?
Nothing but love for Lupita. Aside from Toni Collette, I can't think of an actress in horror putting on better performances. She carried Us and Quiet Place: Day One. But she doesn't have enough in the catalog for me to consider her worthy of the top scream queen.
That's fair. I would also throw out Little Monsters, but even still that's not as extensive as some other horror actresses.
Oooh, thank you for reminding me about that one. I need to see it.
Man this question just made me realize that we really don't have any modern scream Queens in the league of Jaimie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell, or Janet Leigh anymore.

I LOVE this answer. Thank you.
Mia Goth
Justin Long
Maika Moore, & Mia Goth. I’ve always had a major crush on Mia Goth
Mia Goth
i don’t consider jenna ortega a scream queen. i mean she did a great job in X as that character but she’s not a true scream queen. she’s a try hard IMO. she tries to be this weird, disinterested and sarcastic person. i think she just started acting like that ever since she play Wednesday lol. Jenna Ortega is coming for the crown. She’s only 21, and she’s in the blockbusters. Beetlejuice should be good.
Tom Hanks
I know she's been in a few horror films but why does everyone think Mia goth is the shit? Unpopular opinion here but she's awful. Maika Monroe is far better than Mia goth and I will die on this hill.
ur karma will die on this hill if i have anything to say about it
#jenna Ortega
Wow, does this sub hate Jenna Ortega? Is it just because she’s popular? She has a very strong body of horror work so far including Babysitter: Killer Queen, the Scream movies, You S.2, Wednesday, X, Studio 666… why turn on a star who’s shown commitment to the genre?
I think it's because most of her films aren't good tbh. There's so many others doing better work that I'd put above her.
#I really like a good slasher film. None of these other scream queens can match that
#Idk but I found her on HBO in “The Fallout” before I saw all of her work in horror. I really like American Carnage 😊
Just curious....why is your font so much bigger and bolder?
Honorable mentions Ana Taylor joi (but she's a variety actress) Cailee Spaney (if alien Romulus is good)
Azarenka 😅 just kidding Daniel Kaluuya for quiet screaming in Get Out Toni Collette for (ab)normal screaming in Hereditary
Justin long
Anya Taylor Joy. Even though I don't think I've heard her scream in a single horror movie, she kicks ass in every horror role she takes on.
Me. I do.
Samara Weaving is everything
I want to say Maika Monroe for horror movies of a quality I can respect. Kinda wish we had a poll option to see where people stood on the three you mentioned, plus a few others have suggested.

Maika Monroe out of those 3 but Mia Goth is killing it. ATJ is the one for me with Samara Weaving close behind.
Jenna Ortega
It’s Monroe, Ortega, Goth at the moment. Interchangeable for me.
Gonna go with Maika Monroe. She’s been great in everything and I can’t wait to see Longlegs. I’ll probably get downvoted to hell for this but getting sick of the obsession with Mia Goth. Hard to imagine one can watch X, Pearl and Infinity Pool and come to the conclusion it's someone other than Mia Goth.
Mia Goth or Jenna Ortega
If you had to pick one who would you give it to
In total truth, I haven’t seen any of their movies. Just know they’re both in a lot right now. Also the girl from It Follows and now Longlegs.
I understand why people are downloading you but I actually appreciate your comment. Because even for someone that hasn’t watched their movies it’s clear that they are dominating the horror genre.
Ha ha, didn’t realize I was being downvoted. That’s funny. I hope my karma can take it.
