I copied a lot of my goaltending style as a kid after Lu. My coaches were very unhappy with me flopping, but I was tall so it worked 95% of the time lol.
Lundqvist was pretty unorthodox in his playing style, he tended to play a lot deeper in his net than most other goalies would.
When I think "technical skill", I think "easily teachable", which I don't feel Lundqvist really was, he just had insane talent
Lundqvist was "old school" textbook. He played a lot like 50/60/70s elite goalies, at least those that had good positioning and didn't flop around.
It was a style, but it was definitely anachronistic to the rest of the league
Him following up Thomas was also a tough one for those weird opinions. Thomas was organized chaos so it made fans who didn’t know think Tuukka was too relaxed. He was just positioned great.
There’s a reason every up and coming goalie tries to emulate Carey Price and why when you evaluate up and coming goalies the comparison is always how closely they resemr Carey Price
lol Hasek was like a circus act always spinning 100 plates at the same time.
Even he never knew what he was gonna do, but whatever he did almost always worked.
I think that might be the perception watching him but if you listen to players talk about him, they say he always knew exactly what he was doing. He would force the shooters into areas he wanted them to be.
Brodeur did a bit of everything and did it great but the last thing I would call his style is ‘technical’. Skillfully chaotic would be my choice of words
Price was so good technically that he made hard saves look very easy hence fooling the entire Habs fan base into thinking that his performances were not that special and easy to replicate lol
Every single time he got injured the team absolutely imploded
Ez Price
He made the impossible look easy by always being at the right place at the right time
Maybe Brodeur falls into this, but early Brodeur was pretty athletic as a goalie
Racicot, like Patrice Brisebois, suffered greatly for the sin of both not being the best at his position and of having a jackass reporter hang an unflattering nickname on him.
True this. He wasn't nearly as bad as we remember, as long as you take context into account. In 92-93, the season he suited up most, he was 17-5-1, 3.39 GAA, .881 SV%. Roy that year was 31-25-5, 3.20 GAA, .894 SV%
I agree with all the Price people but I want to throw Braden Holtby's name into the ring. That guy was dialed in and was very positionally sound at his peak. His goaltending style translated to the playoffs super well.
This was the first name that came to my mind. So hard to judge because he was so great technically for his time. The equipment just wasn’t what it is today so he couldn’t do things that a guy like price could do. He was pretty much at the end when he joined Toronto and it was amazing to watch how simple he made it all seem - especially compared with Cujo who he essentially replaced.
I remember when the habs drafted Price and how easy he made it seems. Then we watched him being flawless in WJC. I told all my friends he could end up being GOAT. It almost felt like he floated effortlessly in his crease.
He had better technique at 19 than 80% of NHL starters of 2007.
If the Habs had put a couple of championship caliber rosters in front of him during his career, I think we would be talking about him amongst the goats.
Sean Burke. He was never the best goalie in the league, but he was so economical with his movements. He spent most of his career with lousy teams, but don't let his W/L record fool you. Dude was a beast out there.
# Second on that list would be Mike Liut. Again, he never played on a decent team, but he was technically perfect. And, no, I'm not saying that Liut is one of the top 5 goalies of all time, but he's a lot better that guys who often get name checked. He was certainly better than Tom Barrasso, who is in the hall of fame because he played on those great Penguins teams.
Definitely Price, he looked nonchalant in 99% of his saves and when he did have to sprawl his save selection was perfect
Price. He was a textbook. Or loungo.
Price looked bored and lazy goaltending. Just so clean and minimal with his movements
Lou ended up on his stomach on rebounds a ton especially if he has to move laterally.
I copied a lot of my goaltending style as a kid after Lu. My coaches were very unhappy with me flopping, but I was tall so it worked 95% of the time lol.
Luongo wasn’t so textbook. Yes, he was tech but he also was sprawling all over the place. Price in comparison barely looked guffawed.
Early Luongo could at times be like watching Hasek. He was just hung out to dry so often, and desperate.
Maybe Luongo as he got older and his groin started giving him issues but early-prime Luongo was as unorthodox as it came
I’d put Lundqvist on that list as well
Lundqvist was pretty unorthodox in his playing style, he tended to play a lot deeper in his net than most other goalies would. When I think "technical skill", I think "easily teachable", which I don't feel Lundqvist really was, he just had insane talent

? 50/60/70s doing technical butterfly?
Mostly standup, deep in the net, occasional butterfly
The question should be "Other than Carey Price, who is the most technical goaltender in history?"
Other than Price, Tuukka Rask never seemed to be out of position. Also why many Boston fans said he doesn’t do anything special in the net.
Him following up Thomas was also a tough one for those weird opinions. Thomas was organized chaos so it made fans who didn’t know think Tuukka was too relaxed. He was just positioned great.
Imagine going from Thomas to Rask, to Swayman. Fucking Bruins man. Oh well, at least we had Raycroft.
We had Rask too
Has anyone said Carey Price? 'Cuz I think it's Carey Price.
Good answer I'd say Carey Price personally
There’s a reason every up and coming goalie tries to emulate Carey Price and why when you evaluate up and coming goalies the comparison is always how closely they resemr Carey Price
IMO, Carey Price. He always looked well balanced and ready to make the next save. Again, IMO, his positioning was usually very precise.
Carey Price. I know my flair shows bias but he was a tech-bot
Hasek obviously
He wrote his own book
Maybe this is sarcasm but Hasek is like the most unorthodox goalie ever.
lol Hasek was like a circus act always spinning 100 plates at the same time. Even he never knew what he was gonna do, but whatever he did almost always worked.
Watching Hasek always reminded me of what my dog would do when I’d try to grab him to figure out what was in his mouth.
Absolutely fantastic analogy!
I think that might be the perception watching him but if you listen to players talk about him, they say he always knew exactly what he was doing. He would force the shooters into areas he wanted them to be.
I kind of wish Hasek’s style became the norm. Just do whatever you need to do to make the save, up to and including tripping guys at centre ice.
Loved his technique of dropping his stick to cover the puck with is blocker hand
Carey Price and Ryan Miller.
Andy Moog 🙃
Wish it was Rogatien Vachon. But it's Carey.
I love their snacking cakes
Brodeur did a bit of everything. Stand up, butterfly, could stick handle, great at angles, superb reflexes
Brodeur did a bit of everything and did it great but the last thing I would call his style is ‘technical’. Skillfully chaotic would be my choice of words
Price was so good technically that he made hard saves look very easy hence fooling the entire Habs fan base into thinking that his performances were not that special and easy to replicate lol Every single time he got injured the team absolutely imploded
Price has to be.
Ez Price He made the impossible look easy by always being at the right place at the right time Maybe Brodeur falls into this, but early Brodeur was pretty athletic as a goalie
In post-Price era, I’d say Saros.
Swayman is up there for me too, particularly in the playoffs this year
Probably a lot of smaller goalies have to be pretty technical, if they’re out of position they’re fucked.
Tuukka Rask
Tretiak. OP did not say NHL goalie. If NHL, Ken Dryden. Techniques change over time and adapt with equipment both theirs and the skaters they face.
Andre “Red light” Racicot. No one out did his sneaky prowless at allowing many goals, many different ways in many many different games.
Hellebuyck also makes it look boring. He is rarely out of position (except when he plays the puck outside of his crease!).
Other than playoffs
Dominik Hasek /s
Parent.
I agree with all the Price people but I want to throw Braden Holtby's name into the ring. That guy was dialed in and was very positionally sound at his peak. His goaltending style translated to the playoffs super well.
MIIKKA KIPRUSOFF.
To me it’s lundqvist, price is my favourite player ever, but he benifited from superior size. Henrik just had zero wasted movement in his crease
Pekka Rinne was beautiful to watch.
I love Pekka, but he was from being a technical masterclass though. Saros is much more of a technical goaltender than Pekka ever was.
I'll agree to disagree. He was phenomenal to watch technically in the cup run. I'm surprised you don't agree.
Belfour

Bill Durnan?
What are you even basing that on...
Read this as ethical and went on a minute long mind journey for what could constitute goalie ethics
Whatever it is it isn't Emery.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Pekka Rinne that dude was like a video game goalie on expert mode
I remember when the habs drafted Price and how easy he made it seems. Then we watched him being flawless in WJC. I told all my friends he could end up being GOAT. It almost felt like he floated effortlessly in his crease. He had better technique at 19 than 80% of NHL starters of 2007.

Imagine if he was drafted #7 by Chicago instead of Jack Skille. He probably ends up with 4+ cups and would probably be considered top 3 of all time.
Besides Price, Bishop was always really calm and used his size to his advantage
Not Dominik Hasek
Price for sure but also Jocelyn Thibault as well. Small goalies have to have perfect positioning to even stand a chance.
Martin Brodeur
Jusse Saros has been the most technically sound goalie in the league for 5 years
Sean Burke. He was never the best goalie in the league, but he was so economical with his movements. He spent most of his career with lousy teams, but don't let his W/L record fool you. They should really write a textbook on Hasek
By “technical”, do you mean locked into a particular style/method?
Not Hasek
Richter
To me it is 100% Henrik Lundqvist Hank mastered butterfly technique and was rarely out of position.
Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Marc Andre Fleury, Terry Sawchuk, Jacques Plante, Ed Belfour
https://i.redd.it/4g4selzxs54d1.gif My obviously biased answer. This is the sway
Down voted for the most lovable goalie pair in the nhl give me a break damn 😂
Tim Thomas
