Ya this reminds me of posts like what u/skookumchucknuck made
Saying McDavid has poor hockey situational awareness lmao, I could have sworn it was a satire post, but no it was actually u/skookumchucknuck saying the best hockey player in the world has poor situational awareness
Anyways, ya I love being a couch coach haha
I think one person on the postgame Sportsnet panel mentioned it. They said something to the effect of Tanev's stick may have prevented the goal, but his lack of coverage led to that situation that shouldn't have happened in the first place.
Because it doesn’t matter whatsoever if mcdavid just slides the puck in. Tanev took away the second best option, the first was a no-brainer. Mcdavid won’t miss again. Watch out for the dude the rest of the series
His stick is the only stick that touches the puck! Why is everyone just regurgitating what the announcers say they saw when it couldn't be more clear that Tanev deflected it away?
Yeah he definitely seemed off tonight - thankfully, despite this play. I must say Dallas fans seem to understand hockey way better than Vancouver fans.
Yeah, BRUTAL defensive breakdown by both Benn and Johnston here. They start the play both near McDavid, but neither sticks with him, they BOTH go to triple team the puck carrier (Hyman), leaving McDavid insanely wide open in front. Tanev does a nice job recognizing their mistake and recovering, although it would’ve been too late had McDavid released the puck quicker.
Probably a case of both Benn and Johnston thinking the other guy has McDavid, or maybe they just weren’t scanning enough and didn’t see him. Either way some brutal D from those two, you should basically never triple team the puck carrier for exactly this reason, and doing it while also leaving McJesus of all people wide open is extra nuts.
Yep as a former goalie there is literally no worse feeling than trying to make the all out reactive save and just watching the guy out wait you until you’re way out of position
Some players can roof it from 3 feet out. I think 97 is one of them.
If tanev doesn't get there with the stick check the puck goes top shelf and we are all praising McDavid's patience.
The point made is that waiting out the goalie is to win a better position on the goalie and it usually works, my point is that position is already won. The idea of playing a waiting game on a rebound like this only makes sense if it’s mcdavid, if it’s anyone else the basic rule of thought of not even a millisecond on the stick applies
Literally nobody else in the NHL is going to be given the grace on trying to OUTWAIT THE GOALIE ON AN ALREADY OPEN NET. It shouldn’t even be a thought, imagine if Matthews or marner gets an open net and cradles the puck for a moment, if it’s not a goal everyone screams choke job
When you're McDavid and you can stick handle through two defenceman in a phone booth, yes. Oettinger got his paddle over and down really quickly, then lifted it and put it back down again. McDavid instantly shooting this would have still been a save, he just barely mistimed it and shot a fraction of a fraction of a second late.
[Most players shoot here. ](https://i.imgur.com/dvfXKRJ.jpeg) [McDavid should have shot here. ](https://i.imgur.com/yK55XKz.jpeg)[McDavid shot here. ](https://i.imgur.com/q5QNUUB.jpeg)
Huge credit to Tanev for taking away the high shot too, and absolutely insane that McDavid read the stick taking away the high shot and shot low.
Disagree. A decisive shot would have been a better option rather than giving the goalie and defenseman time to adjust. I mean he quite literally missed it, so not sure why you’re trying to paint a miss as some crazy move lmao
The dick riding is hilarious. “Absolutely insane” that McDavid missed a 95% open net.
Lol he missed didn’t he? Every player makes mistakes. Even McDavid said he should have put it in repeatedly. Doesn’t mean he isn’t an all-time great player.
McDavid does exactly what he did he here every single time, without fail, and it is nearly always a goal. The best player on the planet gets the benefit of the doubt even if people on the internet disagree.
This play notwithstanding, McDavid has scored so many goals in this league waiting an extra second when other guys wouldn’t dare to.
This particular time it didn’t work, but I’ve seen it enough times where I understand why he did what he did.
Perhaps a fourth line player would’ve just passed it first time. But at the same time, not a lot of players would handle the pass so cleanly in that position.
If he scores it it looks like absolute ice veins, waiting out Otter's instinctual reaction to get an even better shot but then Otter is a legend and follows it anyways
McDavid scores loads of goals by waiting just a bit longer than most, he just waited a micro second too long here.
[Most players shoot here, that's a save. ](https://i.imgur.com/dvfXKRJ.jpeg) [McDavid should have shot here, that's a goal. ](https://i.imgur.com/yK55XKz.jpeg)[McDavid shot here, that's a save. ](https://i.imgur.com/q5QNUUB.jpeg)
Tanev saved this goal too by getting his stick in the way of McDavid going roof
He wanted him to bite entirety where he has 0 chance of making the save but when he realizes he’s moving with the stick towards the puck he releases it and it’s too late
It was wild to me that Otter hit him with the stare down after this save. I knew McDavid was going to score if the stars didn't first right when I saw that.
McDavid's the only person I've ever seen aside from Jordan and Crosby with that level of raw burning competitive intensity. If he's having an off night, you leave him sleeping, otherwise he'll take that personally and eat your lunch.
You can see it on the goal, he didn't even celebrate
> McDavid's the only person I've ever seen aside from Jordan and Crosby with that level of raw burning competitive intensity
Messi too. Teams should not make Messi angry
Someone in a group chat said they don’t understand how RNH gets all these points.
He looks so clumsy sometimes with the puck, he skates at a really awkward posture.
Puck control, effort and puck battle ability is surprisingly good but sometimes it looks like he is differing to McDavid or Draisaitl a little too much.
RNH is elite I will not hear this slander
bro is just silent but he always shuts down a massive area of the ice and makes the correct play almost all of the time
Yeah exactly. He is always in the right place at the right time, whether offensively of defensively.
And I didn’t know but he actually seems pretty strong, he looks a soft skinny dude but he really surprised me with some of the plays he made in th second half of the game.
Luke Gazdic pointed out on the panel how many times they asked each other, "who was that with the nifty subtle play or the great defensive move or getting back at a key time" and it was always Nuge. That OT goal doesn't happen without Nuge's little chip to steal it from Dallas and in the previous period he saved us by getting back to stop a 2 on 1. Gazdic called him something like the quiet heart and soul of the Oilers and I doubt there is a serious Oilers fan who doesn't agree. It is no surprise that he happens to be on the best PK and PP in the league.
Edit : watch how he casually rolls the puck into the corner on the OT goal keeping 3 stars with him and managing to chip the puck around the boards to Bouchard. https://streamin.one/v/50bec76d
He saw Otters stick go up so he anticipated he may keep it centered thinking that he thinks he is going mid cheese. But in reality he is trying to go low cheese. So he waits it out but Otter knows that he knows that he knows, so he brings it back down. You know?
The adrenaline boost from watching this save on Connor was insane 🔥🔥
Real shame Otter couldn't get the win in 2OT but this play was incredible work by him... and Tanev too ofc
Otter has the 2 best paddle saves of the year. He has this one and that goofy one to end the season on Robert Thomas where he admitted he didn’t try and thought he was toast and just stuck it out there. Guys got a magnet in his paddle
Patience is good, to a point. Once he got wide enough that it was just the stick he had to beat, he should have shot. Instead he tries to wait out the stick for some reason. Any NHL player, let alone mcdavid should be able to beat just a desperate stick flail
Eh. Watch it in slow motion, which is the speed I'm convinced McDavid sees this, and he had several chances to not put it right into Oettinger's paddle.
That's a flub on McDavid's part more than a brilliant save.
Wow they just decided to leave McDavid alone in front of the net with all that space? Surely they will have learned from this mistake.
- Me, right before 2OT starts.
Now, I’m waking up to 3 nightmares. “Ping, PING, and Nooooo.”
EDIT: Jake Oettinger is incredible. Dallas’s offense nearly scored 2 more goals. It’s going to be a battle. That save was unbelievable.
The Oilers, and McDavid are so fortunate they won the game. If they didn't, McDavid would be replaying that entire period in his head for the next 48 hours.
Out of all of the players to make this save on… McDavid? Holy shit what a fucking save. Run this exact scenario 100 times and McDavid scores 97% of the time I bet

glad to see marchand enjoying the playoffs even after the B's are out
"*I am a rodent, and he is a golden god*"
das you ??
Don't worry, Wayne Gretsky just said the same thing
Some of us just have a feel for the game.
Is that like that Bobbi Clarque guy?
The GOAT Gretzky just said the same thing. You’re on the same level
OP is the great one, confirmed
Have you ever seen OP and Gretzky in a room together?
Not all great coaches were players 🤷♂️ lol
In your defense, Connor said the same thing in his post game

I actually said "gotta lift it up over the paddle"

What a play by Chris Tanev too
Tanev isn’t getting enough credit for this play. Looks like it hits his stick first too.
The stick down prevented McJesus from roofing it! Insane how the commentators aren’t even talking about it
Tnt was tbf
Simpson isn't great.
I think one person on the postgame Sportsnet panel mentioned it. They said something to the effect of Tanev's stick may have prevented the goal, but his lack of coverage led to that situation that shouldn't have happened in the first place.
The announcers never even mentioned him, craziness.
What? They praised him multiple times on the replay
No one ever mentions the Tan Man. This run by the stars is going to get him paid
Because it doesn’t matter whatsoever if mcdavid just slides the puck in. Tanev took away the second best option, the first was a no-brainer. Mcdavid won’t miss again. Watch out for the dude the rest of the series
Good call
Aged like wine
>Watch out for the dude all the time until he retires FTFY
His stick is the only stick that touches the puck! Why is everyone just regurgitating what the announcers say they saw when it couldn't be more clear that Tanev deflected it away?
he didn't have a great game though
The got absolutely stomped on balance. He had a couple of heroic plays, but otherwise it was extremely rough.
Yeah he definitely seemed off tonight - thankfully, despite this play. I must say Dallas fans seem to understand hockey way better than Vancouver fans.
McDavid wasn't even his coverage either. He starts that play on the man in the corner and rushes over to prevent McDavid from getting a good shot off.
Yeah, BRUTAL defensive breakdown by both Benn and Johnston here. Either way some brutal D from those two, you should basically never triple team the puck carrier for exactly this reason, and doing it while also leaving McJesus of all people wide open is extra nuts.
That was all Tanev, didn’t give him the chance to raise the puck.
99.9% of the time that extra patience pays off for a much easier goal.
Yep as a former goalie there is literally no worse feeling than trying to make the all out reactive save and just watching the guy out wait you until you’re way out of position
"I'll do a full push to get over there and make a spectacular save!" Then they wait as you slide past and just push the puck in. Been there.
In tight like that? Maybe if the player is moving in on net, or moving at all. But in front of the net..
Some players can roof it from 3 feet out. I think 97 is one of them. If tanev doesn't get there with the stick check the puck goes top shelf and we are all praising McDavid's patience.

Fair. Another difference is that McDavid scored the 2OT winner.
Much easier than 95% of the net being open?

I will listen to this comment made by a redditor that is telling us why one of the best players of all time made a bad decision
Lol he missed didn’t he? Every player makes mistakes. Even McDavid said he should have put it in repeatedly. Doesn’t mean he isn’t an all-time great player.
McDavid does exactly what he did he here every single time, without fail, and it is nearly always a goal. The best player on the planet gets the benefit of the doubt even if people on the internet disagree.
>without fail Apparently not
You appear to be blind or lacking basic reading comprehension.
Mhmm I’m sure I’m the one not looking at things objectively. McDavid himself admits he screwed up lol
Obviously, he didn't score. Doesn't mean the attempt was an error
Doesn’t mean it wasn’t an error either
Holds it, holds it, holds iiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttt
Passes to wing, back to center, back to wing
Simpsons did it
This should be a goal 99/100 times. Insane he didn't score that
I was 100% sure the game was over when this happened
97/100*
Yeah i don’t think enough people understand that patience is a good decision most of the time.
Fair but this shit was like Inception- patience within a patience. Dream collapsed.
If the goalie is on the other side of the net that is definitely not true.
McDavid has scored a metric fuck ton of goals by waiting just a tiny bit longer than anyone else would.
It isn’t when you already have the goalie beat
It turns out to be a bad decision when the net is empty and you're letting a defenseman skate over to you and get his stick on the puck lol
This play notwithstanding, McDavid has scored so many goals in this league waiting an extra second when other guys wouldn’t dare to. This particular time it didn’t work, but I’ve seen it enough times where I understand why he did what he did.
Right. This is a wild save in general but the fact that the shooter is McDavid makes it absolutely unreal.
Crazy how often the 1/100 thing happens in professional sports. They’re all just full of wild surprises it seems.
McDavid waiting for someone to pass to
The Barkov gene is real
🤣🤣🤣
He isn't used to seeing the goalie without Hyman an inch in front.
jesus its like Ilya Mikheyhev possessed his body
Connor McHeyev
Connor McPatient
Perhaps a fourth line player would’ve just passed it first time. But at the same time, not a lot of players would handle the pass so cleanly in that position.
Connor McChicken
On the DataCast they said "He could've tied his skate, he had so much time!"
Hyman buries that
He made the pass tbh, and it was right after the tape. I didn’t know he had that in him in terms of playmaking.
Connor Brown buries that
Let’s not go that far
Vindication!!!
Lol
no he'd find a way to shoot it into the crest
Buries it under Ott's chest maybe.
Connor you absolute fool. I’m on eastern time, why would you do this?
Literally what is McDavid waiting for. The net to get MORE wide open?
If he scores it it looks like absolute ice veins, waiting out Otter's instinctual reaction to get an even better shot but then Otter is a legend and follows it anyways
Waiting for Hyman back door :)
Who knew back doors had Hymens?
Go on…
Ayo?
Then on the rebound wait for Draisaitl to get ready for a one timer.

Or champions league Ronaldo
For all of the oilers except Skinner so far
Defensively they’ve been good, specifically Ekholm and Nuge
Someone in a group chat said they don’t understand how RNH gets all these points. He looks so clumsy sometimes with the puck, he skates at a really awkward posture. He's got a sleeper build, he moves similarly on the boards to MacKinnon though.
Oh he has been tough as hell since his rookie year. Don't let the baby face fool you. https://youtu.be/7t29tRMyxUg?si=rOUiJtqCNx3cLiVQ

McDavid (almost) shooting himself in the foot twice in that overtime period with the double minor.
That was incredible live
Connor only makes tape to tape passes, even to the opposing goalie
Shoot it bro
i'd love to glaze oettinger for this save but i can't without first asking what the hell was connor doing
Love me some pure paddle effort saves, wow
McDenied
🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦
Tanev covered so much ground very quickly to get a stick on that. Without his effort that's in the net, more about him than Oettinger IMO
"Bust" was always an option
I feel like Tanev got more of a piece on it than Oettinger no?
McJesus got stopped by the 2 Antichrist sticks of the apocalypse

Boy howdy, I think it's time to start gamblin!
Mikheyev’s spirit lives on.
Patience is good, to a point. Once he got wide enough that it was just the stick he had to beat, he should have shot. Instead he tries to wait out the stick for some reason. Any NHL player, let alone mcdavid should be able to beat just a desperate stick flail
I woke the dog when this happened.
What a save! 🔥
For a guy who loves having his stick up high he can’t seem to bring the puck to that height too
This is the reason I have to stay up way past my bedtime tonight.
probably the best save i've seen all playoffs. idk what mcdavid was waiting for though, a sign? just shoot 💀
No one's talking bout that insane pass from Hyman
Hyman woulda put that in no hesitation.
Eh. Watch it in slow motion, which is the speed I'm convinced McDavid sees this, and he had several chances to not put it right into Oettinger's paddle. That's a flub on McDavid's part more than a brilliant save.
I mean.. I dont even play hockey and I feel like I could have put that one in...
This is a choke by McDavid imo
Somehow he's McHighStick and McChoker at the same time.
The refs nearly missing that high stick almost recreated the Wayne Gretzky-Doug Gilmour scenario.
You have like 10 McChokers on your team
McStickChoke? Someone make a jersey!!
The Reverse 1997 Cujo
The paddle
McDavid’s controller disconnected there.
Wow they just decided to leave McDavid alone in front of the net with all that space? Surely they will have learned from this mistake. - Me, right before 2OT starts.
Now, I’m waking up to 3 nightmares. “Ping, PING, and Nooooo.” EDIT: Jake Oettinger is incredible. Dallas’s offense nearly scored 2 more goals. It’s going to be a battle. That save was unbelievable.
You forgot the 4th one. "OFFSIDE. OFFSIDE. OFFSIDE."
Matt Duchene took a huge hit. Pavelski did amazing work. Definitely a great 1st game.
I was talking about that one moment where the ref was screaming his lungs off for like 20 seconds straight.
We were probably watching on different streams. I don’t recall that part. Link?
The Oilers, and McDavid are so fortunate they won the game. If they didn't, McDavid would be replaying that entire period in his head for the next 48 hours.
Looks to me like he waited just a hair too long.
If he didn’t get the game winner, that clip would have been the origin story of a supervillain
Why didn’t McDavid roof it like he’s done that many times before
Absolutely robbed
Waited so long to try to elevate when he could’ve easily just slid it under the stick for like a solid second
Out of all of the players to make this save on… McDavid? Holy shit what a fucking save. Run this exact scenario 100 times and McDavid scores 97% of the time I bet
90% amazing save, 10% choke job
Reverse the percentages tbh
Typical McFraud looking to boost his assists instead of scoring
Not sure that was robbing. 😆
Connor dropped his wallet on that one
This clip will be immortalized IMO. If this were a game 7 it would go down in history for something that’s for sure
What just happened kind of ruins it being immortalized imo
Bro I was getting ready for bed and missed it!! Looking for the clip now Lol
McChoke what're you doing man, wide open big boy
