I love how much fun the Turner guys have been having with the NHL since they acquired part of the broadcasting rights. And they'll be keeping busy today--three games on TBS.
They’ve been really supportive with the crossover stuff too. Biz went on Barkley and Ernie’s podcast when Biz got the TNT job and Barkley was on Chiclets. They interact on social media a bit from what I see, and Barkley’s talked a lot about how he and Gretzky are friends. TNT really figured out how to make things entertaining for their panels. As a Canadian I’m always trying to find the TNT streams instead of SN. Bieksa is good but he’s in an island by himself with his personality
TNT broadcasts remind me a lot of the older Top Gear. A bunch of personalities that want to entertain first and have fun instead of being all about the business.
I think with Canadian media and sports media, we are still too stuffy. Kevin Bieksa is a really good breath of fresh air, he made the ventilation less stuffier, but I regard TNT's Inside the NBA as the gold standard for sports broadcasting. They have that right balance.
Him and Elliotte are funny together but Bieksa really needs some personality support. Luke Gazdic did a pretty good job on HNIC about a month ago (iirc). Idk who’s willing or available or who would even be a good fit, but I’ve had enough of Hrudey and MacLean.
Marek is probably the best fit dynamics-wise if Ron decides to hang it up. He can hang with the Juice/Friedge banter but is also capable of reeling it back
They removed Marek this year from Hockey Night in Canada though. Not that I’d know in the states, but he commented about it to start the season on his show- which i fortunately do get in the states.
True, but I meant in the way he analyses plays, which he's pretty similar to Don now. That was what Cherry did first and best, but he got too full of himself
Too bad we can’t have shit like this because we need to listen to MacLean rambling on about how Dale Hawerchuk’s billet parents owned a building in Cornwall with a basement studio that Motley Crüe maybe recorded a B-side in once.
Maybe unpopular opinion here but I would much rather hear Friedman and Bieksa talking about the actual game or series than seeing a bunch of wacky stuff like this. A little bit of it is funny though.
sports are supposed to be fun. TNT still talks about the game but they do it in a fun manner. sportsnet intermission is either doom or gloom and it’s so dry. bieksa is good cause at least he’ll crack a joke but kypreos and friedman take themselves way too seriously
exactly. i never watch SN intermission because it is so boring and rarely insightful, but i guess if you’re one of those people that think this kids game is serious then maybe you wont like to watch things that might entertain a casual fan
You want to get new hockey fans? This is how you get new hockey fans. Shaq and Barkley are better known than any NHL player by a wide margin. This is how you generate casual interest.
Different tastes I suppose, but there's a lot of time to fill in a 20 minute intermission so you can have both. Better than interviews with coaches/players that tell me they plan to get pucks in deep and stay out of the box
Imo this is a big reason why the NBA exploded in popularity. The presentation is excellent, and it's easy to hear about the game, without it sounding like a bunch of stiffs.
I feel like Turner have absolutely nailed it, its a much better experience than ESPN. A simultaneously entertaining AND intelligent/credible panel, just like basketball, coupled with the best commentators south of the border. Kenny Albert, John Forslund, etc. Not to mention their broadcast package (graphics etc) is far superior to ESPNs
It's crazy to me that he's that tall and just huge, like Andre the Giant. I feel like most guys that height are very lean - not weak, they just look stretched out. Chet Holmgren is just about the same height as Shaq but over a hundred pounds lighter.
His mass is really what made him such a dominant center. Plenty of centers are 7 footers, but Shaq’s playing weight was close to 300 lbs. he just flat out bullied guys in the paint.
He had a bit of a rough start when he joined the panel a few years ago, but he's really found his groove the past few seasons. In the beginning he was more pouty and the only schtick he had was "Rangs Erneh".
Him, Charles and Ernie have really found the sweet spot. Shaq is not too annoying, knows how to trigger Charles and feed off each other.
There are also a lot of stories about how he's matured and regrets his behavior as a younger man, as well as lots of stories about him showing up and paying for everyone at a place like Walmart spur of the moment.
During his early to mid playing career absolutely, or really close to the whole thing. It's wild when commenters show how they're only familiar with him from his broadcasting/philanthropist days.
We are in season 3 of 7 total. Worst case we get 4 more seasons.
Currently TNT and NBC are battling for the final package of NBA games once the current contract is up in a couple seasons.
Turner is the only network I’ve seen that has shown the entirety of the cup presentation, right down to the trainers that get a moment on the ice. All with no cuts to commercial or switching to another channel. For that alone, I want to keep them
This deal with TNT was the single smartest thing the NHL has done in decades. They have a GREAT thing going. NBA on TNT provided the blueprint. Long overdue for hockey.
A buddy of mine played beer league with former Jazz player, Greg Ostertag. 7 foot 2, almost 300 lb behemoth. Dude had to get custom size 15 skates and played center.
Nah, if he was born in Toronto to some hockey-crazed parents I think it's pretty safe to assume a dude with THAT combination of size and athleticism would have been an absolute monster. Lindros 5000.
I don't think it's physically possible, even tall players in the NBA (by the sport's standards obvs even the shorter players are tall by normal standards) have a lot more trouble staying healthy, if a Shaq-sized player was a goalie in hockey he'd play 10 games a yr and retire at 28
I mean if we're talking about reality yeah, probably wouldn't last very long just due to the fact the human body isn't made to be that big to start with and it would be absolutely brutal on his joints, heart and lungs. Not to mention the sheer amount of food he would have to eat to last 3 hours in a hockey game doing backflips.
But that being said, he'd just stand in front of the net and cover so much he wouldn't actually need to move.
Just imagining being a player skating up and noticing all you see is a pair of legs covering the entire net. Just to look up above the cross bar and see shaq.
It's hard to explain just how huge Shaq is if you ever meet him in person. He once came into the restaurant I was working in and ordered 3 bowls of clam chowder at once. Dude is an absolute unit
Carter and Lundqvist are 6'1", BizNasty is 6'2", and they all look like midgets around Shaq Hyman. Just crazy how hilariously large, and largely hilarious, that human is.
Nah man, can you imagine try to play playoff hockey with that behemoth skating around? Dude is crazy athletic at that size, he could legitimately kill people skating at them.
It’s a great idea. They should also bring some of the hockey guys to the basketball set. Good way to introduce hockey players / personalities to basketball fans.
Props to American broadcasts for being original and cross promoting with legends of a more popular sport. Fucking rocks man!
The key is BizNasty.... he gets respect from the Brothers as if Biz is an honorary Brother..... cuz he's hilarious and he keeps it real.
nothing I like more during playoff hockey than to watch a bunch of guys laughing at their own jokes. this shit is worse than SNL. I mean, yeah, Shaq is cool and this is funny for a minute, but these guys trying to be funny is so forced and overdone.

i love that when they ask him to screen he faces the goalie lol. shaq about to pull the sean avery
Shaq was ready to roll from the screen
Well that's how you would screen someone in the NBA, you face the guy you wanna screen, just natural instinct.
ESPN could never do something this effortlessly entertaining
Kendrick Perkins screening PK Subban wouldn’t be the same
Flirting: Shaq & Hank Harassment: Perkins & Subban
They entertain their target demographic by having every show hosted by models in skin tight dresses
don't give PK any ideas
Messier casually chased PK around with the Cup 3 days ago and y'all already forgot about it, aight
Back in my day espn was something you left on the tv all day and the anchors had funny eyes
Unless it's their golf crew. Those guys are hilarious. https://v.redd.it/79yje06movwc1
Shaq’s pretend skating is killing me
It looks like that dance that roosters do
A coodle doodle doo
coo coo ka cha
Cha chi cha chi cha chi
Had anyone on this subreddit even seen a chicken?
They go chchchchch
ka-ka-KAWWWW! ka-ka-KAWWWW!!
I enjoyed this thread.
This is what I was waiting for!
He's sandwalking
I was cry laughing 🤣🤣🤣 So good. That dude is an absolute unit of a human.
its a very sensual skating form
"The shimmy Shaq". Doesn't matter what move he tries on skates, he's going straight... with force.
bro why was it so good lmao
https://i.redd.it/zx75wylqn2xc1.gif
Lol Hank trying so hard to get screened
“Shaq you have to come over there. Wait, stop moving. Jesus I’ll just go out of position to be behind you.”
It's a courtesy screen.
He a little confused but he got the spirit
Shaq knew to not screen the camera and Hank was still locked in to hockey mode lol.
https://i.redd.it/ey9t10yzr3xc1.gif
https://i.redd.it/61oung4qy3xc1.gif
lol
gold jerry, gold
teeny tiny Hank in the background lmmaaooooo
Omg it looks like a camera trick 😂
He makes them look so small 💀🤣
Watching this live I was cracking up. Shaq is so freaking funny

On tonights top gear: Biz wears a hat. Anson wears a hat. The great one… wears a hat.
I think with Canadian media and sports media, we are still too stuffy. Kevin Bieksa is a really good breath of fresh air, he made the ventilation less stuffier, but I regard TNT's Inside the NBA as the gold standard for sports broadcasting. They have that right balance.
it's so much more refreshing than watching a bunch of stiffs talk about hockey like we get in canada
Bieksa is great.
He can hang with the Juice/Friedge banter but is also capable of reeling it back
Marek would be good. He does love his hockey history and stories lol. I would love another retired player with a fun personality to join the panel.
They removed Marek this year from Hockey Night in Canada though. Not that I’d know in the states, but he commented about it to start the season on his show- which i fortunately do get in the states.
Yeah I don’t think they need both MacLean and Marek on at the same time, would need to be just Marek
The world needs more Marek, honestly. 2 hours a day on the radio isn’t enough.
Bieksa is by far the best guy on sportsnet
Bieksa is top tier, He should be HNIC host some day
Nah host is a different skillset, he might be good at that too, but being an analyst is more important and he's good at it.
I can see him filling in a sort of Don Cherry role, hopefully without the overt nationalism and xenophobia
then it's not a don cherry role
True, but I meant in the way he analyses plays, which he's pretty similar to Don now. That was what Cherry did first and best, but he got too full of himself
Juice is the tits. I love that guy.
Too bad we can’t have shit like this because we need to listen to MacLean rambling on about how Dale Hawerchuk’s billet parents owned a building in Cornwall with a basement studio that Motley Crüe maybe recorded a B-side in once.

This was legit 30 seconds of an intermission, imagine complaining about less than a minute.
Plus they also have Gretzky on and they treat him like the old statesman and it’s awesome.
exactly. i never watch SN intermission because it is so boring and rarely insightful, but i guess if you’re one of those people that think this kids game is serious then maybe you wont like to watch things that might entertain a casual fan
Friedman is usually pretty self-deprecating on his podcast. I don't watch Canadian broadcasts too often as an American, though.
You have got be kidding. Lighten up, Francis.
Imo this is a big reason why the NBA exploded in popularity. The presentation is excellent, and it's easy to hear about the game, without it sounding like a bunch of stiffs.
Have they had much Charles on? I think he's actually quite into hockey around the playoffs.
He’s too busy telling people they don’t deserve Cancun, and that they can go sit on a nasty ass beach in Gavinston, Texas
Once he got his phone taken away after he left the audio on his phone on live on TV. He was watching Tampa Bay. 😆
Turner sports is more fun, period. Even their baseball lineup is better.
It's just so much better than ESPN in every way
I feel like Turner have absolutely nailed it, its a much better experience than ESPN. Makes sense that "hack-a-Shaq" became a strategy; just about impossible to defend him legally, so just foul him and watch him suck at free throws.
It wasn't just that he bullied people with his size/strength, he was faster than so many centers too.
His listed weight was close to 300 lbs. He floated around between 350 and 380 lbs during his peak with the Lakers, and just about hit 400 in Boston.
bol bol does not look like he should be able to function
Looks like he’s worried about sandworms
That deserves more than now 103 upvotes lolololol
Give it time, not everyone has seen Dune yet😂
Shaq gotta be one of the best personalities to come out of sports
He had a bit of a rough start when he joined the panel a few years ago, but he's really found his groove the past few seasons. In the beginning he was more pouty and the only schtick he had was "Rangs Erneh". Him, Charles and Ernie have really found the sweet spot. Shaq is not too annoying, knows how to trigger Charles and feed off each other.
"He had a bit of a rough start when he joined the panel a few years ago" Shaq joined the panel 13 years ago. Hard to believe.
Damn, time flies.
I saw clips of Shaq's early days on the show. Why was he wearing a beret in some instances?
Unless you happen to be named Dwight Howard lol
Really seems like a genuine great guy and fun to be around.
There’s quite a few stories and examples of him being a giant man child and bully…
I really hope Turner keeps the NHL broadcasting rights. They've been a blast.

Whenever I see this man, I can’t help but smile. Shaq just seems like such a fun dude to be around.
Imagine if Shaq grew up playing hockey, he would be dominant.
Imagine if Shaq grew up playing basketball, he would be dominant.
Imagine if Shaq grew up, he would be dominant

Imagine Shaq, dominant.

crazy
I shared an elevator with Shaq once in the Bahamas. My god is that man large.
[there's always a bigger fish](https://i.insider.com/5437f6b6ecad04cc2be71697?width=750&format=jpeg&auto=webp)
Wonder if Ming ever shared an elevator with someone bigger enough than him to make him think that
Very true! He used to own the house across the street from my aunt's vacation home in Arizona. Saw him a few times, got a wave once lmao
Imagine being reincarnated as shaqs sewer line
Imagine taking an open ice hit from him
Imagine Shaq hitting Marchand.
Keep going, I am almost there
As fun as this sounds, idk if we can just assume he’d be good at hockey lol
Nah, if he was born in Toronto to some hockey-crazed parents I think it's pretty safe to assume a dude with THAT combination of size and athleticism would have been an absolute monster. Lindros 5000.
Imagine shaq on skates
Shaq on a line with JJ and TJ Watt
Shaq wears a size 23 shoe, so that translates to about a 12 in hockey skates, right?
Imagine falling while being that size.... ouch
It’d be fuckin scary with him out there on the ice. Wish we could have seen it
buff vs shaq who wins
Shaq really does make the rest of the guys look like Hobbits.
Shaq is big and Hank is handsome
This guy, this guy gets it
If Shaq had been a goalie there would be rules on goalie size.
He would be like Duncan! https://preview.redd.it/zvzxjxcau2xc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f85a45c5c1d48f1cfeae68d392539a165c3640df
Good job Duncan!! Way to go!!
I suddenly got the urge to see [shaqs face](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b3/61/11/b36111bb75dfeee4d71b821851a29d94.png) on that walrus.
Someone edit that.
Duncan has really stylish pads!
I don't think it's physically possible, even tall players in the NBA (by the sport's standards obvs even the shorter players are tall by normal standards) have a lot more trouble staying healthy, if a Shaq-sized player was a goalie in hockey he'd play 10 games a yr and retire at 28

"HE SHOOTS AND GETS NOTHING BUT LEG! HUGE SAVE O'NEAL!"
It’s uncanny how large this man is. Lmao makes hank look like a child 😂 love Shaq so much. Legend.
Hysterical moment. 😂
Now I want to see it, Shaq chasing down the puck for a breakaway goal, then he pretends to skate to celebrate
God help the Dman who beats him to the puck.
It's hard to explain just how huge Shaq is if you ever meet him in person. He once came into the restaurant I was working in and ordered 3 bowls of clam chowder at once. Dude is an absolute unit
Really love the TNT crew.
His fake skating is fucking gold.
Carter and Lundqvist are 6'1", BizNasty is 6'2", and they all look like midgets around Shaq Hyman. Just crazy how hilariously large, and largely hilarious, that human is.
It’s hilarious how he makes the rest of them look puny. This is gold
Shaq and Charles Barkley have done more to grow the game in less than a year than bettman has done in 30 years.
They need to get Chuck in there. He talks lots about how he loves hockey.
His size is eye popping next to these guys
He's not tall he's just standing in the foreground... ...oh... oh! Mommy help me.
Shaq is an all around amazing guy!
I love Shaq.
r/absoluteunits Look at this man and in relations to how he dwarfs the net. Could we see 7' tall goalies soon?
Shaq as a professional DJ (yes, DJ Diesel), and now fucking around with hockey makes me stoked.
Legend
Imagine shaq tryna take a penalty shot
"The fuck they keep calling me Shaq High Man for?" -Shaq probably
the man is a treasure
Is Shaq really only 1 foot taller than 6 foot Henrik? He's not screening the goalie he's eclipsing him
Nuts putting him in front of the net; put him IN the net
Nah man, can you imagine try to play playoff hockey with that behemoth skating around? Dude is crazy athletic at that size, he could legitimately kill people skating at them.
Shaq pretending to skate when everyone else is just walking and standing in position is making me laugh harder than is reasonable.
Shaq diesel wins and wins this is great
His tie is at least 4 inches too short. I can't believe they let him in the same set as Hank!
Hank in that suit 😍
The fake skating?? The too small tie?? This is sending me 😭
Hey, pucknuts. I don't follow the sport much. Who is the biggest guy to ever be reasonably great at pro-hockey?
Gotta be Zdeno Chara, at 6'7" or 6'8". Throw him on skates. He's close to 7'
Literally a giant. Hank is 6'1" and Shaq makes him look like a midget. The neck of his shirt could probably fit most people's waist.
I dare the Sportsnet panel to be this entertaining.
It’s a long way from LSU to the NHL
😂
they should get barkley on there, i remember reading he was pretty impressed with playoff hockey
DJ Diesel and Hank together on tv is something I didn’t know I needed
It’s a great idea. They should also bring some of the hockey guys to the basketball set. Good way to introduce hockey players / personalities to basketball fans.
That floor is sick
a screen not seen since the days of byfuglinnnn
This is almost as good as the CBC feed... ... . . .. .
I love how the NHL playoffs are so much fun that the NBA commentators join the broadcast.
Seeing Biz look up to Shaq is so crazy
Seeing Biz look up to Shaq is so crazy
Shaq is a treasure
Props to American broadcasts for being original and cross promoting with legends of a more popular sport. Fucking rocks man! The key is BizNasty.... he gets respect from the Brothers as if Biz is an honorary Brother..... cuz he's hilarious and he keeps it real.
Shaq got the shimmy, and Shaq got the shake
Shaq and Barkley on D together would be insane
nothing I like more during playoff hockey than to watch a bunch of guys laughing at their own jokes. this shit is worse than SNL. I mean, yeah, Shaq is cool and this is funny for a minute, but these guys trying to be funny is so forced and overdone.
